• Wireless NAS - options?

  I want to put a NAS drive in an upstairs room (out of the way) but I believe most NAS drives need to be connected to the router. My router is hooked up close to the phone socket downstairs in a spot where we would rather just have the phone. Is there anyway to set-up a NAS drive without hooking it up directly to the router (e.g. wireless) or, better still, is there a way to move the router upstairs as well without significant recabling?

  I currently have a dual-core processor at work and a quad-core at home. I've noticed both PCs are pretty equal as far as launching applications/surfing the web. The difference I can see is that my dual-core is 2.8GHz and my quad-core is 2.4GHz. Is it better to have a dual-core with a fast clock speed or a quad-core with a mediocre clock speed?

• Why is the disk making my motherboard beep?

  Whenever I let my PC do heavy disk accesses for a long time, the speaker on the motherboard starts making a continuous chirping sound. Thankfully it doesn't happen often, but it drives me nuts when it does. Anybody know where this sound might be coming from, or have any hints as to how to track it down? Edit: The problem appears to be with the processor, the correlation with disk access was coincidental. Thanks for all the answers.

  I have recently noticed wmpnetwk.exe using a more than usual amount of processor cycles. I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium on a Netbook. I'm guessing it's a feature of Windows Media player that recently got turned on, possibly because of a Windows update or accidental key combination. I don't usually use Media player that often. Does anyone know if it is a feature that has recently turned on, and if so, how do I turn it off ?

  I would like to setup Windows Server 2008 R2 using RemoteFX at home, for a couple of users to all use the server (instead of buying each user a seperate computer).   My (Fortune 500) company just rolled out new VMs and everyone is complaining they are dog slow. Is there any way I could verify, from inside a VM, whether Intel virtualization (VT-x) acceleration has been properly enabled? The processor claims to be a Xeon E7-2830 but the experience has been more like a first-gen Atom. I'd ask IT directly but I get the impression they're unlikely to respond to any suggestion that they are, in fact, drooling imbeciles.

  When I rebuild my desktop, I'm thinking of using server hardware instead of desktop hardware. I want to do this so I can easily add a lot of ECC memory (~20GB), and possibly more than one processor. I know that video hardware could be a problem, especially because I use 4 monitors. I should be fine with this, as long as I have two pci-e channels. Are there any downsides to doing this? Anything I'm not seeing?

  I have a Netbook with Windows XP Home. Processor is an Atom N280 (1.66 GHz) with 2 GB of RAM. I noticed that newer Netbooks come with Windows 7, but as Starter Edition (which kinda sucks). I wonder if there is a technical reason for using Windows 7 Starter? Or would a better edition (x86) perform equally well? I'm currently considering Home Premium, but BitLocker and Offline Files might have me get Ultimate.

• Why does my computer restart immediately after I shut it down?

I've tried re-installing Windows 7 64-bit, resetting my BIOS, installing the newest drivers and also changing the boot and recovery settings. • Why do I have such high overhead when creating tables in MSSQL7?

  I have an old system running MSSQL7. It takes about 10.5 seconds to create the table below and another 30 seconds to add the index. Is there anything I can do to decrease these times? • Bluetooth not working in Windows 8

  I am using Windows 8 Enterprise edition. Bluetooth is not detected by the OS and drivers. I tried to install Windows 7 bluetooth drivers, but it says no bluetooth device is detected. If I change to Windows 7 without any driver, bluetooth is working. This issue exists in developer preview, consumer preview and release preview. I don't know how to turn on bluetooth. • 100% utilization on amazon server

  Good day, I would just like to know if you guys have any idea what could be the possible cause for a sudden disconnection of clients and 100% cpu utilization in our amazon server. This problem just started 2 days ago and in both occasion it happened at 7 plus in the morning gmt+8. What we usually do is just reset the socket for it to normalize and then on the next day same thing happened at 7 in the morning every client is disconnected from the server.

  I have recently set up a Linux server for my college which also hosts the college website and other downloadables. This server is linked to outside world using a leased line connection of 1mbps capacity. My problem is that the users complain that the downloads from the server are very slow, how can I imporve this? What things should I be looking at. My current server config: Dell vostro260s with 4Gb of ram and i3 processor.
