• Is using the student version of 3DS Max and Unity3d legal?

  I am developing an indie game together with my friend using Unity3D engine. I bought "Silo 3D" for modeling two month ago and for texturing I use 3D coat. We plan to sell our game in the future. For the animations I work with 3DS max (only animation part). My question is, can I work with a students license? The license for the original version is too expensive for me. I am still at the university and I can not buy the 3DS Max license which costs 4000 €. As an alternative I have the choice beetween Blender (can´t work with this software and don't have time to invest for learning a new program) and Truespace (can´t export fbx animation and specially with bones) so for me, 3DS Max is the best choice to be effective and quick. Is it possible to prove it when I export my fbx characters from 3DS Max to Unity3D? I mean can they find out that I have used the students license of 3DS Max for the animations after the release of the game? Maybe with help of DRM? Can I solve that problem when I export the fbx from 3DS Max to Blender and after that export the same fbx to Unity3D?

• D3DXMatrixDecompose gives different quaternion than D3DXQuaternionRotationMatrix

  In trying to solve this problem, I tracked down the problem to the conversion of the rotation matrix to quaternion. In particular, consider the following matrix: -0.02099178 0.9997436 -0.008475631 0 0.995325 0.02009799 -0.09446743 0 0.09427284 0.01041905 0.9954919 0 0 0 0 1 SlimDX.Quaternion.RotationMatrix (which calls D3DXQuaternionRotationMatrix gives a different answer than SlimDX.Matrix.Decompose (which uses D3DXMatrixDecompose). The answers they give (after being normalized) are: X Y Z W Quaternion.RotationMatrix -0.05244324 0.05137424 0.002209336 0.9972991 Matrix.Decompose 0.6989997 0.7135442 -0.03674842 -0.03006023 Which are totally different (note the signs of X, Z, and W are different). Note that these aren't q/-q (two quaternions that represent the same rotation); they face completely different directions. I've noticed that with matrices for rotations very close to that one (successive frames in the animation) that the Matrix.Decompose version gives a solution that flips around wildly and occasionally goes into the desired position, while the Quaternion.RotationMatrix version gives solutions that are stable but go in the wrong direction. This is only for the right arm in my animation -- for the left arm, both functions give the correct solution, which is the same quaternion within error tolerances. This makes me think that there's some sort of numeric instability or weird stuff with signs going on. I tried implementing this and then this, but both gave me a completely incorrect solution (even for the matricies where the SlimDX ones were working correctly) -- maybe the rows and columns are flipped?

• Games without a(n explicit) game loop

  Most game development happens with a main game loop. Are there any good articles/blog posts/discussions about games without a game loop? I imagine they'd mostly be web games, but I'd be interested in hearing otherwise. (As a side note, I think it's really interesting that the concept is almost exclusively used in gaming as far as I'm aware, perhaps that may be another question.) Edit: I realize there's probably a redraw loop somewhere. I guess what I really mean is a loop that is hidden to you. Frames are something you as the developer are not concerned with as you're working on a higher level of abstraction. E.g. someLootItem.moveTo(inventory, someAnimatationType) and that will move from the loot box to your inventory using the specified animation type without the game developer having to worry about the implementation details of that animation. Maybe that's how "real" games end up working, but from reading most tutorials they seem to imply a much more granular level of control is used, but that might just be an artifact of being a tutorial.

• Rendering a DOM across multiple displays

  I'm building a data-driven animation with HTML and javascript to run in a web browser. I would like to display it tiled across three 1080p monitors. This essentially yields a viewport that's 5760px wide and 1080px tall. Pretty large. Does anyone have experience setting up something like this? I have many questions below, but any tip would be appreciated: Is it reasonable to expect a DOM to render into such a large viewport size at close to 60fps? I might choose to use canvas, instead of SVG or HTML, but that would yield a giant canvas. Can a canvas with such high resolution be performant? Of course everything depends on the complexity of the graphics I want to render, but I'm looking to remove that factor from this question, so assume I'm asking about a canvas animation that can run at 60fps at 1920x1080 resolution. Would it run roughly as fast at 3 times the width? Would three.js and WebGL be a more proper approach at that resolution? How do you actually cause Chrome or FF to span 3 monitors at full screen? Do I need a 3rd party solution of any kind? Thanks!

• Google Chrome with strange behavior

  I'm former Chromium-browser user, but after not upgrading the PPA for 2 months, I switched to Google Chrome browser yesterday. Everything is okay, except some strange behavior on some pages and crashing after loading "chrome://" configuration pages. The best known website with strange behavior is youtube, there is a picture what I see: When I open user menu in top right corner, it crashes that way and even after closing the menu, some parts of menu stay display. You may say it's Youtube problem, no, I have this problem at least on three other websites, here it is on Imgur: The problem isn't for the whole side, sometimes it happens from the middle of the screen. The interesting part is that it happens everytime in the same distance from the right border. When I check the DOM elements with the Developer tool, the overlay which shows element's position is rendered how it should be. What is more, if there is anchor after the crashed area, it works after clicking on it. Selecting text in crashed page is impossible. I hope there is enough information to give me an advice, thanks in advance. :) EDIT: Here is what the browser posted in "chrome://gpu-internals/": Graphics Feature Status Canvas: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable Compositing: Hardware accelerated 3D CSS: Hardware accelerated CSS Animation: Software animated. • Reversing animated sprites

  I have created a sprite sheet of which consists of 6 frames with a character moving legs each frame, now I have coded it so that the animation is running successfully from frame 1 to 6, however I am trying to reverse this so then when it goes from 1 to 6 instead of restarting it go's 6 to 1 in a continuous loop. • iPhone web apps running as native apps

  The browser on the iPhone is capable of using advanced web technologies introduced in HTML5. One of these is the app cache that allows web pages to run on the client, from the cache, without a connection to the internet. Together with Local Storage you can also save data permanently "in" the page. My question is, would it then be possible to make a website that when visited and set as a web clip (bookmark on the home screen), could be accessed again, at any moment. Using HTML5, Javascript and css, you can make some very good apps and at the same time avoid the pricey developer fee, the harsh app approval and the single platform development platform? Or am I just dreaming?

  Hi! I'm relatively new to Django and I'm designing a website that primarily needs usability experience, speaking of optimized CSS, HTML5 and UI stuff. It's very easy to use Django for data/Model centric design. Just designing a couple of Python classes and ./manage.py syncdb - there's your Model. But I'm dealing with a significant amount of View centric challenges. (Different user classes, different tasks, different design challenges.) The official Django tutorial cursorily goes through using a "Template". Is there any Design centric guide for Django, or a set of Templates that are ready and useable? I don't want to start from scratch using JS, HTML5, Ajax and everything. From the Model layer perspective Django is very rapid and delivering a working base system. I wonder whether there's something like that for the Views.

• sproutcore or cappucino for web app development?

  I recently found out about the sproutcore and capuccino frameworks for web app development as proper MVC approach to creating Desktop-like applications. As far as I could understand, the main difference between the two frameworks is that Cappucino abstracts away the HTML+CSS+Javascript to Objective-J - a new programming language developed be the creators of Capuccino that adds OO capabilities to Javascript, whereas Sproutcore uses HTML5,CSS,Javascript. After lots of pondering, I thought it's probably best to go with technologies we know, so I downloaded the Sproutcore tools and did the tutorials, and I have to say I was very impressed. Just the kind of thing I was looking for, for organizing a complex web app. However, I just stumbled across the following link: http://charlesjolley.sys-con.com/node/1341228 in which Charles Jolley (the creator of Sproutcore) syas that he's tired of waiting for the HTML5 and ECMAScript5 specs to get finalized, and announces that from version 1.1 onwards they will be switching to Objective-J ! • Using Rails 3 and Haml 3, how do I configure Haml?

  I'm using Rails 3.0.0.beta3 and Haml 3.0.0.rc.2, and I can't find where I need to place the configuration lines for Haml (nor what they are in the new version, for that matter). Using Rails 2.3.5 and Haml 2, I would do Haml::Template.options[:format] = :html5 in environment.rb. Or, in Sinatra, set :haml, {:format => :html5} in my main file. But in Rails 3 everything's been changed around, and no matter where I put that configuration line, I get an undefined method or undefined object error.

  I'm trying to make an HTML5 canvas element fullscreen with the window.innerHeight and innerWidth properties. Unfortunately, on Chrome 10, when I set use the following doctype: <!DOCTYPE HTML> ...there is some extra scrolling space indicated by scroll bars which shouldn't appear. Without a doctype, everything is fine. The element is an HTML5 canvas, so styling with 100% will only stretch the content. Is it worth using a doctype which breaks my functionality (without which might be bad?), or should I subtract, say, 15px from the values in order to keep scroll bars from appearing? (which is kludgy)

• Generating Dynamic web pages without server side scripting

  Hi guys, I am trying to control a media device which has lot of multimedia content that it can play using another device(remote control device) like an ipad connected to the LAN. (UPnP) I want the media device to be able to send the content listing to the remote device so that it will be rendered as a webpage on the remote controller. And actions on the webpages needs to be sent to the the device as commands to execute (like play, pause, next etc). The media device is an embedded device, hence can't have any server side scripting, all has to be done on the client side. I want the page rendered to be HTML5. So, is it possible to generate dynamic HTML5 pages using just client side scripting? Thanks a lot. I am an embedded systems developer hence clueless about the web designing stuff.

• Which external DSLs do you like to use?

  The reason I'm asking is because right now there seems to be tendency to make DSLs internal. One example is LINQ in C# and VB. You can use it against in-memory objects, or you can use it as a replacement of SQL or other external DSL. Another example is HTML5 vs XHTML2. XHTML2 supported decentralized extensibility through namespaces, in other words you embed external DSL code (XForms, SVG, MathML, etc.) in your XHTML code. Sadly HTML5 doesn't seem to have such mechanism, instead new features are internal (e.g. <canvas> instead of SVG). I'd like to know what other developers think about this. Do you like using external DSLs ? Which ones ? If not, why ?

• Which video format(s) should a webapp serve?

  I need to put up a few videos on a Webapp and I'm a bit lost. My requirements are: DRM is not a concern at all it should work on the iPhone (and iPad) and on the main browsers (Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera). it is not a problem at all if the video doesn't play on Linux (because it's a video/screencast of a Windows/OS X software targetted at, well, Windows and OS X users) it is not a problem at all if it also works on Linux (I'm a Linux user myself) Can a unique format be served (like H.264) and play without any additional work on my part or do I need to convert the videos to different formats and have the webapp serve different video formats depending on the browser used? Should I use the "video" tag of HTML5 when I detect an HTML5 capable browser? What's the "safest" bet here? I take it that Flash is out of the equation seen that iPhone/iPad is a requirement.

• Open-source and client-side IRC-Client

  I'm administrating a homepage with an IRC-Webclient. At the moment, it uses a Java-client, modified to be SSL-compatible and compatible with whatever design I want to use. The usual PJIRC thing, with users wishes and concerns implemented (I'll give you SSL-PJIRC if you want - no problem. The login-script will be improved for IE6-support this weekend, means write the object tag if an old IE is found, that's it. Rest runs perfectly well). But still, the better user experience would be a client that only requires the user to enable JavaScript. So, before I go into rewriting and customizing a complete Java-IRC-solution, I'd like to ask some other people - after researching for half a year of time. The requirements are: a) Free hosting, no cgi-bin is acceptable. A lot of hosters also have CGI supported, but it doesn't allow IRC-access. So, seems you are limited to x10-hosting for CGI:IRC. b) Solution must be open source (not free as in free beer, but free as in free speech - I want to be able to read every line of the code). c) Hosting cannot be limited to Windows-hosting. Free operation systems (anything with Linux, BSD, whatever - I think you get what I mean) must be possible. d) No server-side technology. I'm limited to everything that runs client-side only. (Well, a Java-Applet does...). d) Solution must support SSL. e) The side must be able to move. Means, you register to a new free hoster, load your things up via FileZilla and the thing simply runs. No server-concerning implementations needed. f) Old browsers must be supported. From all my research, there are two ways a) Java-Applet b) Use HTML5-Websockets (it is impossible to use the JavaScript-library I found, as it depends on ActiveX - means, Windows hosting). b) means "you are going to enter very unstable content". I worked with HTML5 for month, and, well ... Though, HTML5 also is not suitable for older browsers (old browser support is an absolutely necessary requirement). PHP by the way is a server side solution ... so no line of PHP. My idea now was a Java Applet, and a fallback which again is embedded and proprietary, but only requieres JavaScript (wsirc or Mibbit are great here, whilst I prefer wsirc ... and zooming fonts that are plainly to small, but worse, cannot read the code). So my question is - with free hosting, not installation on server, plain upload - do you see and open source, complelety client-side, ssl-compatible way to use or write a client? This wouldn't be my first programming project, I'm not afraid of the code. If there was a way and I had to write it, even from scratch, I'd do. From all I know, there sadly is none. • Multiple file upload with asp.net 4.5 and Visual Studio 2012

  This post will be part of Visual Studio 2012 feature series. In earlier version of ASP.NET there is no way to upload multiple files at same time. We need to use third party control or we need to create custom control for that. But with asp.net 4.5 now its possible to upload multiple file with file upload control. With ASP.NET 4.5 version Microsoft has enhanced file upload control to support HTML5 multiple attribute. There is a property called ‘AllowedMultiple’ to support that attribute and with that you can easily upload the file. So what we are waiting for!! It’s time to create one example. On the default.aspx file I have written following. <asp:FileUpload ID="multipleFile" runat="server" AllowMultiple="true" /> <asp:Button ID="uploadFile" runat="server" Text="Upload files" onclick="uploadFile_Click"/> Here you can see that I have given file upload control id as multipleFile and I have set AllowMultiple file to true. I have also taken one button for uploading file.For this example I am going to upload file in images folder. As you can see I have also attached event handler for button’s click event. So it’s time to write server side code for this. Following code is for the server side. protected void uploadFile_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (multipleFile.HasFiles) { foreach(HttpPostedFile uploadedFile in multipleFile.PostedFiles) { uploadedFile.SaveAs(System.IO.Path.Combine(Server.MapPath("~/Images/"),uploadedFile.FileName)); Response.Write("File uploaded successfully"); } } } Here in the above code you can see that I have checked whether multiple file upload control has multiple files or not and then I have save that in Images folder of web application. As you can see now it has successfully upload file and you can see in windows explorer like following. As you can see it’s very easy to upload multiple file in ASP.NET 4.5. Stay tuned for more. Till then happy programming. P.S.: This feature is only supported in browser who support HTML5 multiple file upload. For other browsers it will work like normal file upload control in asp.net.
