• Installing purchased apps by terminal

  I've been trying to reinstall all my purchased apps on a new machine, and I ran into a problem. Because of the size of them (about 10-12GB in total) and the fact that downloading them is painfully slow for whatever reason (at most 800kB/s), it takes a lot of time (not to mention USC crashing). And then, when I tried to leave them overnight, none of them were installed and everything was at the same spot I left it. Is there anyway to install them via terminal? Like some kind of USC backend were I could just add the archives for apps listed as purchased and then install them via apt-get?

• What is the correct pattern to use in this case?

  I'm sure this scenario has arisen before, and I want to know what experience has taught to be the best solution. I have a number of classes that are all of a kind. Say all the objects are "Content". They may be "Article", or "Book" for example. The reason I want the "Content" abstraction is because I want to define a number of behaviours for all "Content" objects and not have to build a new DB Table and 10 classes of essentially the same code for each type of "Content". For example, to attach a "Tag" or a "Premise" to a content object would be much nicer if, say, I just had two columns one for ContentID and one for TagID. A solution I've played around with is to have a Content table with a unique ID, and then to have foreign key references on all the other tables (Book, Article, etc). This has actually proven quite solid, but I'm just not sure about it. Do you know how to call this described pattern?

• Question about initial interview for job [closed]

  So I feel kind of stupid having to ask this but tomorrow I have a phone interview with a good company. Phone interviews themselves not a big deal for me, but having to tell them my salary expectations is. The position that I'm applying for is a mid-level software engineer, I fit all of the requirements (I'm not overly qualified by any means), and I want to be sure I'm not asking for an amount that would be absurd or too little. Now, assuming I get a second interview and have to complete some sort of puzzle/code/work, they may pay me +/- whatever I asked for based upon their evaluation of my work. What I'd like to know, is what is a good amount to ask for? Or am I completely wrong with my assumptions? Either way some advice would be much appreciated!

• Does anyone know of a program like Elastics for Linux?

  On mac I would use Elastics (http://tundrabot.com/elastics) To kind of, monitor my EC2 instances. Most important to me was that it worked across several accounts and that it allowed me to connect to a running instance via ssh or RDP. This was the only real feature I care about. I can not always keep the IP address of the server that is running because ec2 is elastic, and it changes frequently. Is there any tool, like Elastics for linux/unity? Again it should support several accounts and be able to give me the IP addresses of the instance I select.

Due to other work commitments I have kind of neglected the site but now think I should put the proper time and effort into getting it just right as it does earn me money. I am a developer so I have all the necessary skills to build the site, it's almost done!. Now I'm just a little worried that I could do something wrong and loose the rapport I've built up with Google in the past or be ban. Beside quality service and content, because I'm serving them for a high fee, I want to make them feel like it is a personal, unparalleled kind of service and I want to spend money for creating things that I give them after their registration such as a beautiful physical membership card so that I can use the effect of mouth-words better and beside that let them be proud about the service. I've tried my best to develop the site experience classy and I'm looking for things in real world to send them after their registration (such as membership card and a small paper tutorial). • MySQL prevents server from booting unless password is entered

  I am kind of new with Ubuntu but I have been working on setting up a LAMP server with hamachi as a vpn client for management. The issue is that when we turn the server on or restart it we are required to enter the MySQL password before it will continue. Where can we script a password or disable this?   I'm pretty new in developing videogames. By now I only used SDL with C/C++ to create games. I'm currently learning OpenGL and I realized that to be fluid and easy to maintain the code must be logically separated. Since I want to use OpenGLES on iOS and Android I was wondering how the engine must be imagined in a technical way, some questions came up: Do I have to separate input/update functions from draw functions in different threads? Is there only one proper way to think a game engine/loop? What kind of assets should I use to create a 3D game using openGl ES to get better performance?

• Drag and Drop Team Selection

  I have a Fantasy F1 Website, currently users select their teams using dropdown menus. It works OK but isn't as user friendly as I would like. I would like to implement a drag and drop type of system, there's jQuery code out there that would go part of the way to allowing me to do this: http://jqueryui.com/demos/draggable/ But I am not sure about how to integrate that into PHP and MySQL, my jQuery skills are limited! I'd also need to stop them spending more than a certain amount of money, each driver has a value and the teams can only spend a certain amount of money. There's also limits for example you can only pick a driver once, but you can have three different drivers. Finally, how would you decide that the user had picked their team, I don't want a submit button as that kind of defeats the object of the exercise! Thanks for any advice, I don't expect anyone to write the code for me but some pointers would be greatly appreciated.

  I’m running Ubuntu 14.04 Server with a LAMP stack, Samba, and FTP, no GUI, just SSHing into the server and working on it. I’m having trouble searching down a solution to this issue, but as far as I can Google for it, it might have something to do with Samba. no talloc stackframe at ../source3/param/loadparm.c:4864, leaking memory?? The warning doesn't pop up at any kind of regular intervals or in response to the same or repeated actions. It pops up between things I’m doing - changing directories, editing files, copying stuff, and it often pops up when I first log in. Has anyone got experience fixing this issue?

Having tried a few Linux Player over the past years i come to wonder, which Players you prefer and what kind of Players are out there, that you suggest are worth looking into and why!! I used Rhythmbox for a long time, but "Jamendo and Magnatune" plugin are both no longer available in 11.10 and also my covers are not shown, since i stream my music folder from a second partition. aTunes is another great Player, but there are also some flaws which i contacted the developers about. • How to backup a dev & QA folder website structure?

  A site I just became in charge of uses a really simple two folder structure to host the dev site and the QA site. The sites are hosted on the company servers so I just have the sites' folders mapped on my desktop. I would like to run some kind of backup scheme, but I am finding it hard to think of a way to do this effectively. The problem is that we aren't using any revision control software, and since the servers aren't controlled by me, I don't think I will be able to implement anything like that. Or could I? The entire site is static too, so no DB's or anything besides html, images, PDFs, etc.

• Is there a name for a mini class that is not a struct?

  I have a couple of mini-classes that are not nested classes. They need to be passed around between different larger classes to use. In a way, they act like Tuples, storing fields in them. For example, [Serializable] public class TransformObject { public GameObject GameObj; public tk2dCameraAnchor Anchor; public ManagerTransform MTransform; } I have a few of them for my game I have been developing. They have to be classes, not struct because the Unity3d editor will not show in the inspector if so. I was just wondering if there is a official name for these kind of mini classes.

  I'm imagining a situation where you are creating an F# module in a purely functional style. This means objects do not have mutable fields and are not modified in place. I'm assuming for simplicity that there is no need to use .NET objects or other kinds of objects. There are two possible ways of implementing an object-oriented kind of solution: the first is to use type classes and the second to use records which have fields of functional type, to implement methods. I imagine you'd use classes when you want to use inheritance but that otherwise records would be adequate, if perhaps clumsier to express. Or do you find classes more convenient than records in any case?

  In windows there is a registry entry called Reserve bandwidth. With that system was reserved some bandwidth from my INTERNET connection so that when i am downloading all other connected application can run with minimum INTERNET support. Like reserve bandwidth help to keep other application (all kind of messenger) on-line when i was downloading. But in Ubuntu my connection speed is good enough but problem arise when i am downloading a file, all my messenger gets off-line status. Can any one tell how can i fix such problem? Or why this is happening?

  I've been doing web/desktop/server development for a while and have worked with many databases (mysql mostly). I've come to the point in my career when I need to have someone look at my queries because they're 'kind of slow'. I believe it's now time to start learning query optimization. While I know the basics of index and joins etc., I'm not familiar with how to use, say, the EXPLAIN output to improve performance of my queries. I have not been able to find any online material that starts with the basics and takes me to application. • How to deal with a ten days debugging session? [on hold]

  Ten days ago, I fixed a bug on a large application and the hot fix has created a disappearing of some data from the user point of view. Data are not deleted, but have been set to hidden status. It could be possible to get the data back, but the thing seems to be hard: I've already spent 10 days to understand and reproduce the problem (mostly with complex SQL queries but sometimes it is necessary to update the database to test the application logic). Is 10 days a normal amount of time for these kind of problems? Should we keep on and retrieve the data or should we tell these users sorry for the loss, but your data have disappeared? Any advice on when to stop searching how to solve the issue?

• Java EE @ NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium Des Moines

  As some of you may be aware I recently joined the well-respected US based No Fluff Just Stuff (NFJS) Tour. The NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium was held August 8 - 10 in Des Moines. The Des Moines show is one of the smaller ones but still was good overall. It is one of the few events of it's kind that take place this part the country so it is extremely important. I had five talks total over two days, more or less back-to-back. I had decent attendance for all my sessions and had many of the same folks staying for multiple sessions which is always a very good sign. I did talks on Java EE 7/Java EE 8, WebSocket, the Cargo Tracker Java EE Blue Prints, JavaScript + Java EE and NoSQL + Java EE.   Lets say I have library "A2" as a dependency in a project. Library "A2" is derived from library "A1" where someone has done few changes to the library "A1" 's source code. Lets say there is a new version of "A1" I want to use the new version but no modification to its sourcecode at all. I am planning to identify what are the changes done to the original library when deriving library "A2" out of it and decorate the latest version of the library with those changes. Is it a good approach to solve this? if not can someone suggest the best approach to solve this kind of problems?

  Is it possible to integrate any kind of Lightbox with SimpleViewer? But I don't want to display SimpleViewer in Lightbox. I want to Lightbox show when I click on one of the images in SimpleViewer. • Moving from Windows 8.1 to Ubuntu - what can I do to replace OneDrive?

  That's it - I got tired from the constant problems on and about Windows I'm having. Network issues, performance issues, compatibility issues... But I'll seriously miss OneDrive integration (all my files are there). There is some kind of app that can sync with it? And what is the easiest way to install JDK? Through PPAs? Note that I have no plans to keep Windows, I'll just replace the d*mn thing with Ubuntu (maybe Mint).

• What is the best way to maintain our programming experiences? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: how do you remember programming related stuff? During my work experiences, I always met many kind of blocking problems with different technologies. When I remember the efforts I spent to find the solutions I become frustrated and want to find a way to keep all in mind. Generally I keep all the project I made in my Hard Drive, and I usually reuse them when I encounter a problem i already encountered. But this is not to really efficient when you reopen your own code and say: Who is the sucker who wrote this code!? I'm thinking to make my own website in which I can post some tutorials / articles about the problems I met and their solutions. So I keep all in mind and help community. Do you think that it will be a good idea or just a loss of time regarding the actual programming forums?
