Smaller applications load faster and use fewer resources. Making a suite of applications, content providers, and services makes your code more open to incorporation into other applications as described the "Use and be used" tip. Is this true? What is the thumb rule for the size of app?

  • May we have Ruby and Rails performance statistics? We're persuading the business to use Rails!

    We're convincing our Products officer that we want to use JRuby on Rails, and we're having a hard time coming up with some statistics which show that: Coding time is less using Rails vs. say Struts or Zend Framework or what have you. Ruby (and JRuby in particular) performance isn't horrible (anymore). Rails performance isn't bad either. If you can get us some good stats quickly, we might have a chance!

  • Better performance to Query the DB or Cache small result sets?

    Say I need to populate 4 or 5 dropdowns w/ items from a database. Each drop down will have < 15 items in it. These items almost never change. Now I could query the DB each time the page is accessed or I could grab the values from a custom class that would check to see if they already exist in ASP.Net's cache and only if they don't query the DB to update the cache. It's trivial for me to write but I'm unsure if the performace would be better or not. I think it would be (although not likely anything huge). What do you think?

  • different small js files per page VS. 1x site-wide js file?

    Different pages of my site have different js needs (plugins mainly), some need a lightbox, some dont, some need a carousel, some dont etc. With regards to pageloading speed should i option 1 - reference each js file when it is needed: so one page might have: <script type="text/javascript" src="js/carousel/scrollable.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery.easydrag.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/colorbox/jquery.colorbox-min.js"></script> and another have: <script type="text/javascript" src="st_wd_assets/js/carousel/scrollable.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="st_wd_assets/js/typewatch.js"></script> option 2 - combine and compress into one site_wide.js file: so each page would reference: <script type="text/javascript" src="js/site_wide.js"></script> there would be unused selectors/event listeners though, how bad is this? I would include any plugin notes/accreditations at the top of the site_wide.js file

    Dear all, I can't figure out how to optimally do the following in PHP: In a database, I have messages with a unique ID, like 19041985. Now, I want to refer to these messages in a short-url service but not using generated hashes but by simply 'calculate' the original ID. In other words, for example: http://short.url/sYsn7 should let me calculate the message ID the visitor would like to request. To make it more obvious, I wrote the following in PHP to generate these 'alphanumeric ID versions' and of course, the other way around will let me calculate the original message ID. The question is: Is this the optimal way of doing this?   • Whats better query with long where in condition or many small queries?

    Maybe it's a little dumb, but i'm just not sure what is better. If i have to check about 30k rows in db for existanse, what i'd do? #1 - one query select id from table1 where name in (smth1,smth2...{till 30k}) #2 - many queries select id from table1 where name=smth1 Though, perfomance is not the goal, i don't want to go down with mysql either ;) Maybe, any other solutions will be more suitable...   • how to import other schema jars when using the scomp tool

    there is a huge amount of xml schemas for the business, some of them are common types like Money.xsd, Address.xsd, etc, while others are business specific like Customer.xsd, ShippingOrder.xsd, etc. So I decide to compile these schemas into 2 jars, one is commonbeans.jar, the other is businessbeans.jar. I've separated them into different folders. to build the commonbeans.jar is simple, just run "scomp -out commonbeans.jar ....\common*.xsd"; while run "scomp -out businessbeans.jar ....\business*.xsd" is a different story, there are errors say can't find those common types, and run "scomp -out businessbeans.jar ....\business*.xsd ....\business*.xsd" will blindly duplicate all the common types into the businessbeans.jar. so is there any way to link the commonbeans.jar when compile those busimess schemas, maybe something like "scomp -out businessbeans.jar ....\business*.xsd commonbeans.jar". I hope my poor english has expressed my issue!

    I've been pounding my head on the wall trying to figure out how to sort this in JavaScript (I have to work with it in this format unfortunately). I need to sort it based on Small, Medium, Large, XL, XXL (Small ranking the highest) in each variationValues size field. To prevent hackers to call the Page Methods, we want to implement some security in the BusinessLayer. We are struggling with two different issues. First one: public List<Employees> GetAllEmployees() { // do stuff } This Method should be called by Authorized Users with the Role "HR". Second one: public Order GetMyOrder(int orderId) { // do sutff } This Method should only be called by the owner of the Order. I know it's easy to implement the security for each method like: public List<Employees> GetAllEmployees() { // check if the user is in Role HR } or public Order GetMyOrder(int orderId) { // check if the order.Owner = user } What I'm looking for is some pattern/best practice to implement this kind of security in a generic way (without coding the the if then else every time) I hope you get what i mean :-) Thanks for you help.

    I have a Widget model with inheritance (I'm using Single-Table Inheritance, but it's equally valid for Class-per-Table). Some of the subclasses require a particular field; others do not. class Widget < ActiveRecord ALL_WIDGET_TYPES = [FooWidget, BarWidget, BazWidget] end class FooWidget < Widget validates_presence_of :color end class BarWidget < Widget # no color field end class BazWidget < Widget validates_presence_of :color end I'm building a "New Widget" form (app/views/widgets/new.html.erb) and would like to dynamically show/hide the color field based on a <select> for widget_type. <% form_for @widget do |f| %> <%= f.select :type, Widget::ALL_WIDGET_TYPES %> <div class='hiddenUnlessWidgetTypeIsFooOrBaz'> <%= f.label :color %> <%= f.text_field :color %> </div> <% end %> I can easily write some jQuery to watch for onChange events on widget_type, but that would mean putting some sort of WidgetTypesThatRequireColor constant in my Javascript. Easy enough to do manually, but it is likely to get disconnected from the Widget model classes. I would prefer not to output Javascript directly in my view, though I have considered using content_for(:js) and have a yield :js in my template footer. Any better ideas?

But I can still seeing some margin in it, and I need to have no margin in it?   • Why do a small amount of add/deletes take several seconds in EF4?

    Using the Entity Framework 4. I have created a Code First database in the past and a piece of code needs to delete and add 16 objects, this takes 6 seconds each. That's 300+ ms for each query! The deletes/adds occur in a foreach scope and there is a SaveChanges() outside the foreach. In the above image you see that each takes 6 seconds, which is 34% of the time, for 16 calls. That doesn't sound normal to me... Why is this and how can I improve the performance? If there is no solution: Are there any workarounds I can use? It would be a pain to rewrite my project...

    hi, i have setup Sphinx and tested Hello World and its working fine. but i wanted to change the words. so i change the WSJ extension and edited the Dictionary and included the name which i wanted with the phonemes. and then i zip it and again change the extension type to jar and checked. but it says "WARNING jsgfGrammar Can't find pronunciation for nugegoda" and when i talked to some friends about it they asking me to put that word to the language model also but i cannot find such a language model in the library folder. please can someone help me the normal english words are working fine. i hope someone help me on this.

    I'm using google blogger. I want to ad thumbnail images of different classes I will be offering in my home film/video/sound/lighting studio. The idea is the prospective student visits my website, sees a class they want to take, clicks the thumbnail so first read a descriptive article about the class, at which point they can schedule the class for the time, day, and date of their choosing between the hours of 5am to 9pm, 365 days a year. As soon as the student has inputed the time, day and date of the class they want, they would go to a check out page to purchase the class time. The student would then be sent an email confirmation along with the exact location, the class name, and the time and date they selected. I was thinking of using Dwolla for the check out page because Dwolla offers either no fee or 25 cents per payment transaction, but I'm not sure I can hook up to them easily enough. My blog site is not finished by a longshot. I still have to actually input all of the class thumbnail images along with descriptions, but if you need to see what the page looks like the web address is http://www.myalexlogic.com Google blogger allows for third party code to be added within movable gadgets.

  • How can we make the video play in a small view and also filling that whole view?

    I have added an imageView of size 300*300 into the interface in my ipad project. I can play the video fullscreen using MPMOviePlayerController. And I am trying to make it play in the imageView by using the following code. [imageView1 addSubview:moviePlayer.view]; [self.moviePlayer play]; Its playing but not as fullscreen and also not filling the whole imageview. Its kind of playing on the top quarter of the view and that too not the whole movie view - about lower right 60% only. How can I fix this? How can I make the movie play on the whole imageview like it plays on the full screen?
