• Indexing table with duplicates MySQL/SQL Server with millions of records

  I need help in indexing in MySQL. I have a table in MySQL with following rows: ID Store_ID Feature_ID Order_ID Viewed_Date Deal_ID IsTrial The ID is auto generated. Store_ID goes from 1 - 8. Feature_ID from 1 - let's say 100. Viewed Date is Date and time on which the data is inserted. IsTrial is either 0 or 1. You can ignore Order_ID and Deal_ID from this discussion. There are millions of data in the table and we have a reporting backend that needs to view the number of views in a certain period or overall where trial is 0 for a particular store id and for a particular feature. The query takes the form of: select count(viewed_date) from theTable where viewed_date between '2009-12-01' and '2010-12-31' and store_id = '2' and feature_id = '12' and Istrial = 0 In SQL Server you can have a filtered index to use for Istrial. Is there anything similar to this in MySQL? Also, Store_ID and Feature_ID have a lot of duplicate data. I created an index using Store_ID and Feature_ID. Although this seems to have decreased the search period, I need better improvement than this. Right now I have more than 4 million rows. To search for a particular query like the one above, it looks at 3.5 million rows in order to give me the count of 500k rows. PS. I forgot to add view_date filter in the query. Now I have done this.

• accessing variable sheet ranges within Google spreadsheet?

  I've been trying to keep this little project entirely within Google docs, but I may have hit a wall. The spreadsheet is being used as a way for multiple users to record individual events with a Template they duplicate. I want to be able to compile a list of names of those attended onto a "report" sheet from all of the unique sheets, which should be after a certain sheet index [3] to [infinite]. Is this sort of variable sheet range possible in Google spreadsheets or do I need to go to the API to get this accomplished?

• Please tell me what is wrong with my threading!!!

  I have a function where I will compress a bunch of files into a single compressed file..it is taking a long time(to compress),so I tried implementing threading in my application..Say if I have 20 files for compression,I separated that as 5*4=20,inorder to do that I have separate variables(which are used for compression) for all 4 threads in order to avoid locks and I will wait until the 4 thread finishes..Now..the threads are working but i see no improvement in their performance..normally it will take 1 min for 20 files(for example) after implementing threading ...there is only 5 or 3 sec difference., sometimes the same. here i will show the code for 1 thread(so it is for other3 threads) //main thread myClassObject->thread1 = AfxBeginThread((AFX_THREADPROC)MyThreadFunction1,myClassObject); .... • Freeglut ( OpenGL ) in C

  I would like to ask for you a little help in my homework. I'm learning at an university of Debrecen, and I would like to be a programmer, but I'm stuck with this homework. It's a OpenGL project in C. (freeglut) The next task is about: Window to viewport transformation. Draw graphs of functions, as shown below. The individual views (viewport) defines four different rectangles. Functions look like this picture: one window in 4 piece, and one pice of one function. • In scala can I pass repeated parameters to other methods?

  Here is something I can do in java, take the results of a repeated parameter and pass it to another method: public void foo(String ... args){bar(args);} public void bar(String ... args){System.out.println("count="+args.length);} In scala it would look like this: def foo(args:String*) = bar(args) def bar(args:String*) = println("count="+args.length) But this won't compile, the bar signature expects a series of individual strings, and the args passed in is some non-string structure. For now I'm just passing around arrays. It would be very nice to use starred parameters. Is there some way to do it?

• send() always interrupted by EPIPE

  I've this weird behaviour in a multithreaded server programmed in C under GNU/Linux. While it's sending data, eventually will be interrupted by SIGPIPE. I managed to ignore signals in send() and treat errno after each action because of it. So, it has two individual sending methods, one that sends a large amount of data at once (or at least tries to), and another that sends a nearly similar amount and slices it in little chunks. Finally, I tried with this to keep it sending data. do { total_bytes_sent += send(client_sd, output_buf + total_bytes_sent, output_buf_len - total_bytes_sent, MSG_NOSIGNAL); } while ((total_bytes_sent < output_buf_len) && (errno != EPIPE)); This ugly piece of code does its work in certain situations, but not always. I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware or ISP problem, as this server is running in six european servers, four in Germany and two in France. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• How do I make "simple" throughput j2ee-filter?

  I'm looking to create a filter that can give me two things: number of request pr minute, and average responsetime pr minute. I already got the individual readings, I'm just not sure how to add them up.   Hi, I'm refactoring some specs, in controller specs I have a before(:each) which sets up things required in the session my before filter is... config.before(:each, :type => :controller) do ... session[:current_user] = @user session[:instance] = @instance ... end @user and @instance are also set in the before(:each) i've just hidden them for readability here I get the following error when running the controller tests undefined method `session' for nil:NilClass I would expect the global before callbacks to have the same things as the ones in the individual tests but I guess maybe they are loaded before the rails environment has been initialised? • So I dynamically load a jar at runtime how do I use it?

  So question 194698 shows how to load a jar file at runtime and you can load individual named classes and get a Class object. Now my problem is I want to be able to cast those Classes to the types they really are, but I can't because I can't use an import since the whole point is to load it at runtime rather than compile time. It seems like the way to go is to use reflection to discover the functions and field names, but that seems brittle since the API in the jar files could change and the code won't break until it is run. Is there a better way?

Then I have PlayerManager, which would be on the server, and that controls the interactions between players (a lot of the logic that does that is excluded so I could keep this simple). I put the calls to the PlayerData class in the Manager class because sometimes you have to do certain checks between players, for instance if the attack actually hits, then you increment "attackHits". The main problem (in my opinion, correct me if I'm wrong) is that this is not very extensible. I will have to touch the PlayerData class if I want to keep track of a new stat, by adding methods and fields, and then I have to potentially add more methods to my PlayerManager, so it isn't very modulized. If there is an improvement to this that you would recommend, I would be very appreciative. Thanks.

• Thread-Safe lazy instantiating using MEF

The problem is I don't have access to definition of Lazy and MEF defines how the Lazy class create objects. I should notice the CompositionContainer has a thread-safe option in constructor which is already used. My questions: 1) Why the lock doesn't work ? 2) Should I use an array of locks instead of one lock for performance improvement ?

• Load all tab bar views when application first runs

  Here's the problem. I have a tab bar controller with 4 separate views. When I navigate from the first view to the second view, it takes some time to load up the second view. What I want to do is be able to load and initialize all of my tab bar views during my splash screen. That way, when the user navigates between the tab views, there is no wait time. So the question is... how do I manually initialize my individual tab bar views in my app delegate? And once again, thank you stackoverflow!

• Can I use a single instance of a delegate to start multiple Asynchronous Requests?

  Just wondered if someone could clarify the use of BeginInvoke on an instance of some delegate when you want to make multiple asynchronous calls since the MSDN documentation doesn't really cover/mention this at all. What I want to do is something like the following: MyDelegate d = new MyDelegate(this.TargetMethod); List<IAsyncResult> results = new List<IAsyncResult>(); //Start multiple asynchronous calls for (int i = 0; i < 4; i++) { results.Add(d.BeginInvoke(someParams, null, null)); } //Wait for all my calls to finish WaitHandle.WaitAll(results.Select(r => r.AsyncWaitHandle).ToArray()); //Process the Results The question is can I do this with one instance of the delegate or do I need an instance of the delegate for each individual call? Given that EndInvoke() takes an IAsyncResult as a parameter I would assume that the former is correct but I can't see anything in the documentation to indicate either way.

• jQuery resize event for div children

  $("div.content-left > *, div.content-main > *" ).live('resize',function(){alert("Size changed")}); does not work, because the resize event only applies to window resizes. But in my case the divs change size late, because the content is loaded late by an ajax request - or by clicking a panel menu. I definatley need to avoid to register on all individual events of the children (ajax, click), because that can be very many different events and then it is not maintainable.

• Help with validation rules

  I am trying to figure out how to validate a section of a form using php. If at least one of value 1-5 is checked, then at least one of value A-E must be checked. Value's A-E cannot be allowed without at least one of 1-5 being checked. Multiple values in each section can be selected, as long as there is at least one value in each section checked. I have tried individual IF statements and arrays without success. Does anyone have any suggestions or examples? I am missing something and I am certain it is pretty obvious, right in my face.

• Save objects to a database?

  So far in my .Net coding adventures I've only had a need to save information to files. So I've used XmlSerializer and DataContractSerializer to serialize attributed classes to XML files. My next project, however, requires that I save and retrieve information from a SQL server database. I'm wondering what my options are for doing this. The current version of the app, which was not created by me, uses a lot of hard coded SQL commands. But now I'm trying to avoid doing anything where I have to read or write individual fields to or from the database or objects. I especially want to avoid a lot of hard coded SQL in my code. I like how the serializer classes just figure out how to read and write XML files based on the attributes and or public properties of the class. Is there something similar for a database rather then XML?

  Yeah so I'm lost from the get-go. Alright let's say I have a big image with every tile for a 2D top-down RPG game. They're all the same width and everything. What I don't know is how would I save every individual tile from that image to their own image data for use on the canvas? Basically I want to take a big image with all my tiles, choose squares throughout it to make images out of the tiles, and store each image as a variable in an array. So, how would I do this?

  I have a DataGridView that is being filled with data from a table. Inside this table is a column called 'group' that has the ID of an individual group in another table. What I would like to do, is when the DataGridView is filled, instead of showing the ID contained in 'group', I'd like it to display the name of the group. Is there some type of VB.net 'magic' that can do this, or do I need to cross-reference the data myself? Here is a breakdown of what the 2 tables look like: table1 id group (this holds the value of column id in table 2) weight last_update table2 id description (this is what I would like to be displayed in the DGV.) BTW - I am using Visual Studio Express.

• Regex to split a string (in Java) so that spaces are preserved?

  I need to split a string (in Java) into individual words ... but I need to preserve spaces. An example of the text I need to split is something like this: ABC . . . . DEF . . . . GHI I need to see "ABC", " . . . .", "DEF", ". . . .", and "GHI". Obviously splitting on the space character \s isn't going to work, as all the spaces get swallowed up as one space. Any suggestions?   To avoid spammers, what's a good strategy for imposing limits on users when sending email from our site? A count limit per day on individual IPs? Sender emails? Domains? In general terms, but recommended figures will also be helpful. Our users can send emails through our web page. They can register and log in but are also allowed to do this without logging in, but with a captcha and with a field for the senders email. Certainly, there is a header, "The user has sent you the following message.", limiting the use for spammers, so perhaps it's not a big problem. Any comments on what I'm doing will be greatly appreciated.

• Method for SharePoint list/item locking across processes/machines?

  In general, is there a decent way in SharePoint to control race conditions due to two processes or even two machines in the farm operating on the same list or list item at the same time? That is, is there any mechanism either built in or that can be fabricated via the Object Model for doing cross-process or cross-machine locking of individual list items? I want to write a timer job that performs a bunch of manipulations on a list. This list is written to by the SharePoint UI and then read by the UI. I want to be able to make sure that the UI doesn't either write to or read from the list when it is in an inconsistent state due to the timer job being in the middle of a manipulation. Is there any way to do this? Also, I want to allow for multiple instances of the timer job to run simultaneously. This, again, will require a lock to be sure that the two jobs don't attempt to operate on the same list/item at the same time. TIA for any help!

  I have a Donation.rb model with an amount column that takes an integer. I want to sum all the individual donations together and show the total on the home page. In the home_controller, I'm doing @donations = Donation.all and then in the view I do <% sum = 0 %> <% @donations.each do |donation| %> <%= sum += donation.amount if donation.amount? %> <% end %> The problem is that this is printing the running sum each time a new donation is added to it. I just want the total sum at the end after they've all been added together.
