  Ok. We know database size, number of concurrent users, number of transactions per minute; should choose number of processors, RAID, RAM, mirroring and clustering. There are no exact rule.. but may be there are no rules at all? In my practice in every case I have "legacy" system, and after some inspections and interview I can form an opinion how hardware and design can be improved. But every time when I meet "absolutely" new system (I guess there are no new systems, but sometimes are such tasks) I can't say anything trustful. So I'm interesting how people deal with such tasks? They map task on theirs experience or have some base formulas?

• What would be better in my case - apache, nginx or lighttpd ?

  Hey everybody, I'm writing a php site that's expected to get about 200-300 concurrent users browsing it. When initializing the application will load about 30 php classes, some 10 maybe 15 images and a couple of css files. So my question is what else can I do (except optimizing my code and using apc/eaccelerator for php) to get as close as possible to those numbers of concurrent users ? Currently we haven't chosen a server for the site to be hosted on but most probably it'll be a VPS Dual core + 2 or maybe 4gb ram. Is it possible for such a server to handle that load ? Also how could I test it myself and be sure that it'll be able to handle it ? Thanks in advance, Me

• How can I dual install Ubuntu 10.4 in a Mac Mini with 10.4.11?

  I'd like to power-up my aging Mac Mini (1.5GHz Core Solo, 1GB RAM, Tiger 10.4.11) by installing a shiny Ubuntu alongside the current OS. After all, I use Ubuntu for everything save for cleaning my teeth. Since it's my first and only Mac and I have next to no experience with the OS (having used it basically as a media player) I am a little concerned about rEFIt, ELILO, Boot Camp and the fact that it's basically a 4.5 years old unsupported machine and I might get asleep reinstalling everything several times. I've used the live desktop-i386 CD and everything works. I tried with an external USB drive instead of a CD but couldn't make it boot. As for installing Ubuntu, the howtos I've found give several alternatives depending on the model, the OSX version, etc.. but they usually talk about newer machines. Which howto should I follow to repartition, and boot thereafter? Thanks

• SQL 2008 Memory Usage

  I have a SQL Server 2008 (ver 10.0.1600) running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise server with 8 GB of physical ram. If I open Task Manager I can see on 'Physical Memory' section of 'Performance' tab that only 340 MB are Available of 8191 Total, but I can't see any process using such amount of memory. Please note SQL Server is memory limited to 6GB (Maximum Server Memory = 6000). If I open Sysinternals Process Explorer, I can see sqlsrvr.exe process has: Private Bytes: 227.000 K Working Set: 140.000 K Virtual Size: 8.762.000 K What does this means? Is there any way to free up this memory for other process? Why Virtual Size figure as allocated memory? I thought that Virtual Size was 'reserved memory' only.

• Virtual Machine files on ramdisk doesn't run faster than on physical disk

  I installed total 36G memory (4x8G + 2x2G) in the host (Windows 7) and I used ImDisk to create a 32G ramdisk and format it to NTFS file system. Then I copied the virtual machine (in VMware Workstation format) folder, including vmx, vmdk, etc... to the new created ram disk. Then I tried to power on it in VMware Workstation. What made me surprised is that the performance is not better than before. It cost almost the same time to power on the Windows 7 VM. I check the Resource Monitor in the Windows 7 host, and the statistics of CPU, disk, network are rather normal. The memory has reported 3000+ hard fault/sec when guest OS boot then drop to 0 after the guest powered on. Any idea about this issue? I had thought the performance of ramdisk will be better than physical disk in this case. Am I wrong? Thanks.

  Hi, I have purchased AMD Phenom X4 955 3.2GHZ processor with supporting gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H mother board / 6GB DDR2 RAM / 500GB SATA drive for learning Vmware ESX 3.5 product. In the above configuration, I have installed windows xp 64 bit operating systems and continue to installed vmware workstation 6.5. From the VM workstation, I can able to install ESX3.5 update2, but I unable to start properly, please refer the below mention error. “Mounting root failed. Dropping into basic maintenance shell. To collect logs for VMware, connect a USB storage device and run 'bin/vm-support '. Machine will be rebooted when you exit from this shell.” The same was tested in the windows 2003 Enterprise Edition server / windows 7 32bit / windows 7 64bit also, Please help me to resolve the issue.

• Is it safe to run an operating system from an USB flash drive?

  I've got a laptop that has a broken harddisk controller. Replacing the motherboard is quite expensive. I thought about buying a flash drive and installing & running the system from it. However, I'm concerned about some things. Speed: Are they fast enough for swap memory (I've got only 1GB RAM installed.) I'm considering buying 2 or 3 of them and making them into a RAID. What about limited write cycles? How long will it last for a system that has a filesystem with journaling enabled? I'd hate to abandon it. Are there significant differences between internal SSD which are used in modern laptops like MacBooks and USB flash drives? What should I expect in 10 years when the memory wear starts kicking in?

  We are Rendering 16 live Streams at our client machine through one of our applications and the resolution of the video streams are as 4CIF/MPEG4/25FPS/4000Kbits. The configuration of the client machine is below. HP Desktop Machine: Microsoft Windows XP Intel (R) Core2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00 GHz 2.99 GHz, 1.94 GB of RAM Intel (R) Q45/Q43 Series Express Chipset (Inbuild) The CPU usage of the machine peaks 99% for 16 streams. After some discussion, we had decided to install external graphics card to reduce the CPU usage. So that, we have tried following graphics cards. NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 - 128 MB Radeon HD 4350 - 512 MB GDDR2 Redeon HD 4350 - 1GB DDR2 ASUS EAH 4350 Silent 1GB DDR2 But the performance wise there has been no difference - even a drop in performance. So, what is the purpose of these external graphics cards? Really it will reduce the CPU usage? What parameters have to check, if we want to reduce the CPU usage?

• Seasgate GoFlex NAS + Horrible Speed = Bad Experience

  I am having issues with transfer speeds from my desktop PC to my NAS. I have my NAS hooked up to a Gigabit Gateway as well as my Desktop with Cat 5e. I see up to 4.0 MB/Second Transfer Rates, the normal is about 2.5 MB/Seconds. There is 3 Partitions on my NAS, Public, Private, Backup. When I transfer from Private to Public I see the speeds above. If its under the same partition almost instant. I was wondering if the speeds I am seeing is in due to my Computer or the NAS. I was looking into building my own Media Server in due to these horrible speeds. Is their anything I can do in the mean time to speed this up? • ASUS K55VM Laptop unexpectedly shuts down

  I've read quite a few questions on SuperUser of people having laptop shutdown problems but mine is different. My laptop specs: Intel Core i7 3610QM (IvyBridge) NVIDIA GT630M 2GB and Intel GMA4000 8GB RAM Windows 7 64 Bit My laptop occasionally shuts down when playing FarCry 3. It's around 5 months old. I've played games like Crysis and it never shuts down unexpectedly. Since I experienced this shut down recently, I decided for GPU-Z to log the temperatures. The final log value at the time of shutdown were thus: GPU Core Clock [MHz] - 797.3 GPU Memory Clock [MHz] - 896.8 GPU Temperature [°C] - 89.0 GPU Load [%] - 99 Memory Controller Load [%] - 36 Video Engine Load [%] - 0 Memory Usage (Dedicated) [MB] - 535 Memory Usage (Dynamic) [MB] - 53 VDDC [V] - 1.0620 My drivers are up-to-date and I didn't encounter any BSODs at the time of shut down. • How do I backup my Ubuntu 9.10 system and then restore it to a new machine with different hardware?

  I have a nicely configured Ubuntu 9.10 machine, with crossover linux (from Codeweavers) installed. I have the Nvidia drivers installed. Everything is just as I want it. Now I want to move to a new machine with different hardware: different sized hard drive, different size RAM, different video card, etc. I tried the technique suggested on Ubuntu forums, "Howto: Backup and restore your system!". The results: New system complains about swap not being found New system complains about not finding Nvidia hardware, and I can't open the System-Administration-Hardware Drivers application (i.e., /usr/bin/jockey-gtk) to fix the problem. As result of nvidia, X-Windows is throwing errors, and the on screen process for fixing X-Windows isn't working. How do I restore a backup of my old system, including my Crossover Linux installation, to a new machine with different hardware installed?

• Simple UPDATE query with (sometime) long query times

  I run a dedicated MySQL server (2 cores, 16GB RAM) serving 100-200 requests per second. It is getting sluggish during peak traffic and I have a hard time optimizing the server. So I'm looking for some ideas now that I have done lots of Innodb fine-tuning with the "TUNING PRIMER" The query that now generates most slow queries is the following (see result from mysqldumpslow): Count: 433 Time=3.40s (1470s) Lock=0.00s (0s) Rows=0.0 (0), UPDATE user_sessions SET tid='S' WHERE idsession='S' I am very surprised to have so many long queries for such a simple query with no locking. Fyi, the table is InnoDB and has 14000 rows. It contains all active sessions on the site with approx 10 UPDATE and SELECT hits per second. • What can cause peaks in pagetables in /proc/meminfo ?

  I have a gameserver running Debian Lenny on a VPS host. Even when experiencing a fairly low load, the players start experiencing major lag (ping times rise from 50 ms to 150-500 ms) in bursts of 3 - 10 seconds. I have installed Munin server monitoring, but when looking at the graphs it looks like the server has plenty of CPU, RAM and bandwidth available. The only weird thing I noticed is some peaks in the memory graph attributed to "page_tables" which maps to PageTables in /proc/meminfo but I can't find any good information on what this might mean. Any ideas what might be causing this? If you need any more graps, just let me know. The interrupts/second count is at roughly 400-600 during this period (nearly all from eth0). The drop in committed was caused by me trying to lower the allocated memory for the server from 512MB to 256MB, but that didn't seem to help.

• Debian Linux server hangs after a week or so

  I have 2 Debian Linux 6.0.4 servers that have a strange behaviour: after 5-7-10 days they hang. By this I mean the servers need to be restarted and before that ping won't answer. I've been struggling with this problem for a couple of months now and here's some thoughts/what I tried without being able to solve the problem. I changed the RAM on a server. Being 2 different servers I doubt that it could be something related to hardware as a 3rd identical server won't have this problem. I logged the server load and when it crashes the load is fine (quite low) I cannot find anything in the server logs, logs are fine till the server freezes. I don't have access to console unfortunately. While I have years of admin experience I have never encountered such an issue and right now I have no idea where else to investigate. If you have an idea of what I could try in order to fix the problem please share it with me:-)

  I have a computer based on AMD processor & 512 MB RAM. Lately the computer has gone horribly slow. I did many tricks but was of no avail. So, I reinstalled my Operating system - Win XP SP3, still the the response is very slow. I checked if there are any background applications consuming resources. There was nothing suspicious. I removed all the applications on start, still the computer is slow. I've heard that AMD processor based systems show this behavior when they get aged. Is it true? Should I just buy a new system?

• Performance problems on RDC to our Terminal-Server Win2008 R2

  Hello, we have a new win2008-R2 (2x Xeon X5570, 32GB RAM). There I have installed the terminal-server roles, thats all OK. Currently 5 users are working at this server, but all get a very low performance in their remote-desktop session. Sometime it takes 1-2 seconds till the keyboard-inputs will be performed and shown. At the clients I run RDP v 6.1 We have also an older TS-server (based on Win2003 with an Opteron-CPU), there are working about 20 users at the same time. There I do not have the troubles with the inputs at the remote-desktop sessions. Both servers are connected to the same gigabit-switch. Any ideas what could cause the troubles at the Win2008 R2?   I wanted to build a single PC to fit all my needs, but since hardware virtualization support (Vt-d specifically) is a huge problem, I decided to build multiple single-use oriented computers. In this scenario I want these computers to be as minimal as possible. So the core of my question is: "Are there significant performance difference between chipsets?" I'm considering Sandy-Bridge i7 or i5 for my "game console" computer. And since I will use only one graphic card, one or two HDD, 4-8GB RAM and nothing else, I would be fine with a micro-ATX board with a Q67 (or some other low-end chipset).

• Linux Live CD for old computer

  I have a pentium II (that's right, pentium II) with a scant 200MB of ram. This was a high-end workstation in it's day. The machine currently runs dos on a raid array, and I need to pull some data from it. I figure my best chance at this is to use a linux live cd to copy the data to one of our active directory network shares (there is a network card in the machine). Unfortunately, my linux skills are abysmal, so I'm not sure where to get started: Where should I look to find a linux cd that will run well on such an old system Since I'm likely gonna need to be command-line only, what do I need to do to configure the network card and mount the network share via the command line? Bonus points: exact syntax needed to copy and convert the entire volume for use in VMware server 2.0, but really just copying all the data should be enough.

  I have a MacBook Pro with the 2.4 Core 2 Duo and 4 GB RAM. I want to run Windows 7 for ASP.NET development within VMWare Fusion. Since I may be doing some SharePoint 2010 work I was thinking that my install of Windows 7 would need to be the 64 bit version because SharePoint 2010 requires 64 bit Windows. As I am new to Mac OS (I am running v10.6.3) I am not sure if it would support a 64 bit OS in a Virtual Machine. Thoughts?

  Hello, Can anyone tell me what the compatibility of drivers on 64bit vista are like on the Dell Inspiron 1525. Mine is just a year old now and I want to upgrade to 64bit vista. • Need to install Windows 2003 server on my XP Service Pack 2

  Hii All, I would like to insatll windows 2003 server on my desktop machine which already has Windows XP service Pack 2 installed . I dont want to overwrite XP but i want to have a option to select XP or Windows 2003 server while booting . I am not sure how to go about this , am afraid if i insert Win 2003 cd and start installing directly it may overwrite XP :( . My HD is 350 GB n RAM is 2 GB with 8 partitions .
