  Hello everyone.I am using ubuntu from last 6-7 months. I am having 512mb ram and a p4 processor with 1.73 Ghz processing speed. And being a programmer i have to work with eclipse and netbeans like ide's, and they sometimes hang. So is there any option in ubuntu to stop the services running just like i do have in windows "msconfig" or mycomputer-manage, and where could i find the details about the services so that i should know what will be its effect if i stop this service. • recommendations for a lightweight linux distribution for a test server

  I'm planning on setting up a test server to experiment with some application servers (tomcat/jboss/...) and with some portals. Now the machine I've set aside for this is lightweight CPU/GPU wise(Atom D510, 4 gigabyte ram, 500 GiB hdd, onboard GPU). But it should suffice for most things, I'm more interested in the stability of JBoss/Tomcat for my purposes than the stability. However I'm having a bit of trouble picking an appropriate distribution size/performance/setup time wise/security wise since it seems I can't sneeze without another distribution popping up. I've been thinking about going for Fedora since I've read that that distribution has been optimized for Atom, but I'm not really familiar with it. My experience with Linux has mostly been limited to Ubuntu and some tinkering with puppylinux. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty using the command line. I'm not planning on starting a discussion per se, mostly the pros/cons that people have encountered with some distributions

• Testing a Virtualisation of a Debian Server (vmWare vSphere probably)

  I'm soon getting access to a powerful root-server (quad-core, 16gb ram, 1gbit connection) where gameservers (like minecraft,counterstrike etc.) for different customers should be setup. My plan is to use programs such as vmWare vSphere to create some virtual machines for each customer. Inside such a virtual machine I'll setup the gameserver and maybe some kind of ftp server when its needed. Now that I'm kinda new to virtualisation of servers I want to test this local on my Desktop Computer. Is it possible to create a virtual machine of debian using vmWare Player on my Windows desktop computer and then install vmware vSphere in this VM to create multiple VM's inside that VM ? Or do I really need to install Debian on my desktop computer. (I want to use the time during installations etc. to work a bit at my windows installation) Some tips on virtualising debian servers are also appreciated :)

• Browsing is much slower on one PC wired to the same router - why?

  Wife is not happy. It takes about 5 seconds to open a google window, versus about 1 second on the faster computer which is about 3 years old itself. Yes, it is an older computer (5 -6 years old, I'd guess), surely with less RAM, but for simple browsing, should it matter? Both are hardwired to the same Netgear Rangemax router. Both use fixed IP addresses. Both are XP. Both have about 8 feet of cable to the router. I have the fastest service my cable provides. Probably irrelevant but ...two newer MACs are connected wirelessely during the summer and they are even faster, but I think that's the difference in browsers. If you could point me to a list of process of elimination steps that would be most appreciated. Thanks Dean

• Windows 7 clean install, freezes when starting programs

  Hello Everyone, I have a problem on a brand new Windows 7 Lenovo T510 intel I5/4gb ram. When I got the Laptop, right off the bat i noticed that it would freeze up often on th most simple tasks. After a while I got fed up and reinstalled. All that is installed currently is AVG/Firefox/Office. I Rebooted after installing those things and when I try to open Firefox it freezes just trying to open. Ive tried a few other things and it freezes all the time. Any Ideas what it could be?

• Dell Windows 7 DVD includes IE9, where to find IE8?

  It appears as though we can now only get a 64 bit installation of windows 7 to come with IE9, and I cannot find an installer for IE 8 for it. This presents a problem, as I am building a new machine for a developer, but the company does not support IE9 yet, and all development needs to be able to be run on IE8. I would rather have them on a 64 bit version of windows so they can have more than 4GB of RAM (can get IE8 on 32 bit win 7). Does anyone know how to get IE 8 on a new 64 bit version of win 7?

• Ultra-lightweight web browser?

  Are there any good super-lightweight graphical web browsers out there? I'd like to be able to browse the web on an old PC, but the mainstream crop of browsers is just too heavy, and I don't want to resort to something like Lynx. There must be something decent out there that'll fit in 16 or 32MB of RAM comfortably. 100% standards compliance isn't necessary, but I'd like something that supports the most widely used parts of CSS and JavaScript. The goal is to get 98% of sites usable in a nice, graphical format.

• Nagios remote monitoring: NRPE Vs. SSH

  We use Nagios to monitor quite a few (~130) servers. We monitor CPU, Disk, RAM and a few other things on each server. I've always used SSH to run the remote commands, purely because it requires little to no additional config on the remote server, just install nagios-plugins, create the nagios user and add the SSH key, all of which I've automated into a shell script. I've never actually considered the performance implications of using SSH over NRPE. I'm not too bothered about the load hit on the Nagios server (It's probably over-speced for what it does, it's never been over 10% CPU), but we run each remote check every 30 seconds and each server has 5 different checks performed. I assume SSH requires more resources for each check but is there a huge difference? (I.E. enough of a difference to warrant the switch to NRPE). If it's any help, we monitor a mix of physical servers (Normally with 8, 12 or 16 physical cores) and Amazon EC2 medium/large instances.

• Bad HD video deinterlacing processing

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit with Unity. My system configuration is: CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4 GHz) RAM: 8192 Mb DDR2 Kingston Video: Palit GeForce GTX 260 216 SP, and my screen resolution is 1680x1050. I also have Window 7 Ulitimate installed, and I can see the same files in Media Player Classic without any horizontal lines. I've installed vdpau driver, NVIDIA drivers 304.51, and MPlayer 2 (within SMPlayer). I've disabled "Sync to VBlank" option in CCSM (because in other way, by default, MPlayer process use about 50-60 percents of my processor load), tried to swich between different deinterlace options in SMPlayer, used "-vc ffh264vdpau,ffmpeg12vdpau" (without quotes) parameters for MPlayer, switched to "Ubuntu 2D", but, finally, have no results. Any suggestions? How must I to set up MPlayer?

• HDD not detected whenever first power on (detected at BIOS level)

  I am using Asus P8H61-M LX Motherboard with latest version of BIOS: 4401 One SATA-3 Western Digital Black Series 1.5TB is attached to SATA port 0 A Samsung 22x DVDRW SATA drive attached to SATA Port 1. ps/2 Logitech mouse and keyboard. CPU is i3 with DDR3 8Gb RAM. no other devices are installed. My problem is that when I turn on the computer, the WD HDD is not detected. ie cannot be booted. I have to press ctrl+alt+del in order to get it detected. I'd used the WD data lifeguard software to scan the HDD, the smart status is OK, the surface scan does not show any error at all. Where did I do wrong? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

• Computer temporarily freezes and then resumes

  This happens on ALL operating systems (7, Ubuntu, etc.). What happens is everything for 1-3 seconds becomes unresponsive, I then hear what sounds like my other internal hard drive 'spinning up', and then viola everything is responsive again. Note: Already ran SMART tests, no issues at all. I think issue is that the HDD spins down and when need it gets 'turned-on' (OS settings turn off HDD's after 20 mins of inactivity) and because my pagefile is on the other HDD it causes OS to temporarily freeze.   Ok, so ive been looking around, trying to learn and understand the way that ram works. Ive gotten one answer that said "The addressing is best for 2 sticks, and when you use 4; it slows down" Another answer said something like: Theres bank/channel interleave that makes the memory read like one stick Also I read something about the memory density also being a factor. I dug further and found out that theres a higher speed limit on my board for 2 sticks vs 4, so now im trying to put an image in my head of how and why, and... pfft. Can anyone explain, or recommend a resource that would answer these questions?

I would like to buy a hardware for that and i am trying to understand if i should buy a desktop and host the webserver on that or do i have to buy some used server from ebay and host on it.   considering this rig : i7 2600K 8GB RAM Corsair Vengeance kit 10-9-10-27 @1866 HD 4870 PSU Corsair AX 1200 I recently upgraded to a HD 6970 and I am getting the following - not so nice screens : http://imageshack.us/g/213/1000142z.jpg/ Had anyone any similar trouble at all? I am thinking that the card is DOA but could it also be the Mobo? Since I am in the BIOS I can't think how the mobo could be the problem. HD 4870 works perfect btw regardless of what I throw at it. • slow disk writes between host and guest

  I've got a ubuntu (server kernel) on a amd x4, 4gb ram, 2x seagate sata 1 tb disks for testing virtual machines and the write performance is very slow. The two disks are in a software raid1 array, one small boot ext3 partition, 10gb system partition and the rest is a xfs partition (about 980) gb for data (virtual machines). If I'm copying files from the virtual machine to the host with rsync or scp the copy frequently stalls or goes at about 1mb/s. What's wrong? I've tried disabling barriers on xfs, increased logbufs, allocsize, but it seems nothing helps. The strange thing is that await (for example during copying) for sda is usually under 100, while for sdb is around 400. Any ideas on what could be wrong / what could I do to improve this setup?

• Upgrading from 32 to 64 Bit Windows 7, without losing program installations/games

  I recently built a new computer and put the wrong installation of Windows on (32 bit), meaning I cannot use all of my RAM. I would like to upgrade to the 64 bit version, though I already have downloaded many programs and games which would total to around 30 GB give or take. I don't have the kind of data usage with my ISP to re-download this much data again, until next month (total GB will be higher as time goes on). I know there is Windows Easy Transfer, but it is not so much my data itself I'm worried about, it is more having to re-download and install a bunch of games and applications. Is it possible to perform an upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit without this loss?

• BSOD after PC has been running for a while

  I'm having a problem where my computer is getting a blue screen. I have noticed that the BSOD happens after the PC has been running for about 2 days. The BSOD's seem to be an error with atikmpag.sys with an error code of 0x00000116. The problem started about a month ago.It has happened all five times that I left my computer on that long in the past month. Because my computer is a pre-built one from Dell, and I had upgraded the graphics card (at least a year ago) to a more demanding one, I replaced the stock 360W power supply that came with it. I replaced it with a more powerful, 680W one, because it seemed like the problem could be related to a lack of power supply wattage, but it didn't affect the problem at all. • DOS application to allow remote management of files over serial link

  Harken back to the days of DOS. I have an embedded DOS handheld device, and I'm looking for a tool to manage the files stored on it. I picture an application I can launch on the device that opens COM1 up for commands to get a directory listing, send/receive files via x/y/zmodem, move/delete files, and create/move/delete directories. A Windows application can then download a recursive file listing and then manage those files (for example, synchronizing with a local directory). Keep in mind that this is DOS -- 8.3 filenames, 640K of RAM and a 19200bps serial link (yuk!). I'd prefer something with source in case we need to add additional features (for example, the ability to get a checksum of a file for change detection). Now that I've written this description, I realize I'm asking for something like LapLink or pcAnywhere. Norton no longer sells DOS versions of pcAnywhere and LapLink V for DOS seems pricy at $50. Are you aware of any similar apps from those good old days?

• Tuning MySQL to consume less memory

  I have a VM which has 2GB Ram, (full specs) And I am setting up a site which has one table in particular with over a million records. There's little or no usage of this particular database (perhaps once or twice a day) but simply running mysql grinds the whole server to a halt. I've looked through the top results but nothing is really denting the CPU however the memory seems to be the issue. The site isnt even live of taking requests yet. the memory situation looks like this: # free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2006 1880 126 0 3 53 -/+ buffers/cache: 1823 183 Swap: 2047 345 1702 Are there any good pointers to tune mysql to stop hogging the system memory? • Google Chrome gets really slow on 10+ open tabs

  For some time already I face a problem with Google Chrome. I really love this browser, but on Windows 7 on a pretty decent machine (i5, 4GB RAM) it gets REALLY slow when I open for instance 10 techcrunch.com pages. Once I do that it becomes virtually difficult to scroll through pages and the general responsiveness of the browser gets down. And if I open 20+ or 30+ tabs there is a good chance all of them will crash. Does anyone got an idea? This happens to me on several PCs with Windows 7 64bit. At 10 tabs there is 600-700MB memory used by Chrome. Two systems have the issue are both laptops with integrated graphics. One by Intel, the other an nVidia GeForce 310M.

• Editor that supports renaming tabs for untitled docs?

  I sometimes need to copy/paste text into two windows and compare the contents for a quick hack, ie. without having to save both documents to disk, and display the two docs side-by-side vertically so I can scroll them independantly (WinMerge doesn't seem to support independent scrolling.) Since the documents only live in RAM, text editors will display a non-descript tab/filename like "Untitled1" or "New file 1": http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/1153/sidebysideunleddocs.jpg Does someone know of a Windows editor that supports... renaming tabs with more descriptive names even with documents that haven't been saved to disk, side-by-side, vertical tiling, and independant scrolling?   I have two Varnish servers and I plan to add more varnish servers. I am using a nginx load balancer to divide traffic to these varnish servers. To utilize maximum RAM of each varnish server, I need that same request reaches same varnish server. Same request can be identified by one GET parameter in the request URL say 'a' In a normal code, I would do something like- (if I need to divide all traffic between 2 Varnish servers) if($arg_a % 2 == 0) { proxy_pass varnish1; } if($arg_a % 2 == 1) { proxy_pass varnish2; } This is basically doing a even / odd check on GET parameter a and then deciding which upstream pool to send the request. My question are- What is the nginx equivalent of such a code. I dont know if nginx accepts modulas Is there a better/ efficient hashing function built in with nginx (0.8.54) which I can possibly use. In future I want to add more upstream pools so I need not to change %2 to %3 %4 and so on Any other alternate way to solve this problem

• Why does my CPU Usage reach 100% too often?

  I'm using a dual-core processor and often see my CPU usage reaches 100%. I realize this may happen if I'm running too much applications, so when I know the computer starts to run slowly, I start to close my applications. I usually run 4-5 applications simultaneously. Usually those are: web browser (Google Chrome), Adobe Photoshop, Notepad++, XAMPP, and Windows Task Manager. Usually I close tabs in my Chrome first, because I often browse the net with about 20 tabs/4 windows open, so I presume that would take much memory (bad habit, I know). But even after closing Chrome's tabs or closing other applications, my CPU Usage often stays at high percentage - 72% at best, 100% at worst. I check the Processes tab on Windows Task Manager and usually found the System, System Idle Process, or services.exe taking the highest CPU process (could reach 60). Why is this happening? And is there any solution? EDIT I have T2250 @ 1,73 Ghz and 2.5 GB RAM

• Installing VMWare Tools in Windows Server 2008 fails system startup

  I recently created a vmware virtual machine with windows server 2008 enterprise as Guest. My host is Ubuntu 10.04 on my Lenovo laptop. I fall into a big trouble which makes my created VM unusable after I've installed VMWare Tools. After installing tools I'm able to run the system only in safe mode. After some event manager analysis I found the issue is with drivers installed by vnmware tools. Any one has got the same issue? Is there any good practice for doing that?
