• Will my RAID0 stay intact when I move it to a new computer?

  My primary drive is a 250GB WD SATA drive. So, I added 2x 500GB 7,200 RPM WD SATA drives into my Windows Vista box and created a 1TB RAID0. I then formatted the the primary drive and installed Windows 7. To my pleasant surprise when I booted into Windows 7 my RAID0 was still intact and I kept trotting along the same as I did before. Now I am replacing my motherboard, processor, and RAM and plan on formatting the primary 250GB drive again and using it to boot for a new clean install of Windows 7. My question is: if I move these two SATA drives which are setup for RAID0 into the new system, install Windows 7 again, will the RAID0 remain? Edit: Software RAID. I created it within Windows. The RAID0 does NOT contain the system boot partition.

  Recently I bought an Intel Core i7 Dell laptop fully integrated. I have an ATi Radeon 1 gb ram graphic card and so on. Everything works fine even the brightness, but when I try the multi touch multi finger(touchpad which enables two or more finger) the pointer jump and go there and go here and so It's very annoying because when I'm trying to write this question I cannot let the pointer be cool! when I accidentally the touchpad it is very annoying. How can I fix this ?

• Using my System as the server- need advice

  We are deploying my web application in my system in jboss. And I am planning to use my system as the server as well. There are no html pages or jsp pages deployed. The client requests for resources and the server provides the resources in the form of objects. We are also using databases(Postgresql-15 tables) as the database server(this will also reside in my machine). My system configuration is Windows Vista, 2.3 GHZ, 4GB Ram, 32 bit. There can be many requests coming in at the same time. So is this configuration enough? Should we go with a different Operating System like Windows Server? I have never used Windows Server OS. How will it be different from other windows operating systems? Or if you feel please some other OS will be good in this situation, please suggest.

• Setting up Ubuntu Server for hosting Java web applications

  I'm trying to set up an Web Server running Ubuntu server to host some Java web applications, with MySQL running on it, an so on .. here is the tutorial I follow: perfect server ubuntu 11.10 The server configuration is: CPU S1155 INTEL Pentium G850 2.9GHz VGA 5GTs 3MB 65W MB Gigabyte GA-H77-D3H Ram 4x4Gb HDD 5x1TB Seagate (4 in RAID5 and 1 for Backup) The problem is that when I am trying to install the Server version of Ubuntu, when the installer asks me whether to activate ATA RAID Devices, and I click yes, he sees only that one, if I click no, he sees all 5 HDD's separate without any RAID, is this normal? I also tried to install the Desktop version on RAID5, but after restart, Ubuntu does't want to boot up, an underscore stands on the top of the screen. I am a newbie in servers and their configuration, in fact I am developer. I need a help from you guys.

The error is ""Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information." " . What might be the problem ? Also previously I tried to install only Windows 7 on my HDD . I downloaded the ISO from digital river . Made bootable usb . I got the same above error . But when I tried to install it via other usb which had pirated Windows 7 downloaded from torrents it gave no error .   I am preparing to migrate a pretty old XP machine to Windows 7. I ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and got a couple of smaller issues (low 512Mb RAM complaints and similar stuff). Apart from that, everything else was shown as compatible, including my old ATI Radeon 9550/X1050 card: ATI Radeon 9550/X1550 Series: This device is compatible with Windows 7. The thing that concerns me is that people around the web seem to be unable to actually find a Windows 7 driver for this card. Even the ATI web page states that this is a legacy device: If the user chooses to, they can install the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista graphics driver under Windows 7. [...] Using the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista driver under Windows 7 is not officially supported by AMD [...] Should I trust the Advisor and continue with the update? Does this mean Microsoft will provide at least a generic driver which will allow hardware acceleration with this card?

Does this configuration make sense for a SmartOS HPC, or would you recommend an alternative? • File corruption

  Recently, almost every file I try to copy into my HDDs gets corrupted. When writing to the disk, some portion of the file is replaced by random bytes (Checked using Diff apps) There's no problem reading existing files. I'm pretty sure it's not the HDD, becasue I've tried another HDD (a brand new 1TB WD) and the problem still remains. I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPU, an ASUS M2NE motherboard, 2 WD SATA II HDDs (320GB + 1TB) and 3GB of Corsair RAM. My OS is Windows 7 (64 bit) Now, what could be the cause of this? If it's the motherboard, can it be fixed by using a PCI SATA card?

• Outlook Express hangs when selecting multiple emails

  I'm using Outlook Express (6, I think) on Windows XP. Lately, it has been hanging. Sometimes this happens at startup (right after the main window with all the panes loads) and sometimes when selecting many emails (sometimes as low as three emails at once, sometimes at ten, it's not a fixed number). When this happens, msimn.exe starts to use 98-100% CPU and RAM usage shoots up very quickly, reaching hundreds of megabytes in half a minute. The message pane goes gray instead of showing the message contents. As I said, this sometimes happens right after the main window loads, sometimes when selecting many emails at once. I tried backing up everything, deleting the identities, creating a new one and restoring, but this still happens.

• Getting BootMgr not found errors repeatedly on Win7 x64

  So here is the basic configuration of the box: Primary RAID 1 (Mirror, Bootable): 2x 300GB WD SATA drives AMD Phenom Quad Core x64 @2.2 ASUS M3N78 Pro Board 4GB RAM Win 7 Ultimate Additionally, this box is a Host OS for several CentOS Boxes via VirtualBox. The box runs like a champ but, for whatever reason, everytime I restart the machine I get a BootMgr not found error when the box tries to boot. I pop in my Win DVD, select 'Repair Windows' then 'Fix Start Up Problems' and everything works fine...once. When I restart the box again I have to go back through this process. Any ideas on what is going on?

• Terminal Server 2003 Performance Troubleshooting

  Let me get your thoughts on terminal server performance problems. The server hosts average 25 users which, after running some numbers, on average use 600MB memory with their main applications running (web browser, adobe reader, IP phone client). All users are on the same LAN as server. We constantly experience slow response and short session lockups. Combined CPU usage is on average 10%. What appears strange to me is that the system shows 29GB physical memory with 25GB of it free. The page file usage is about 50% averaging 9GB used. Some server specs OS: Server 2003 32bit Enterprise with /PAE flag RAM: 32GB CPU: 2xQuad Core @ 2.27Ghz HD: RAID5 1.2GB After doing basic troubleshooting using performance monitor it leads me to believe that the performance problems are caused by the 32bit OS limitation in addressing full 32GB of physical memory even though the /PAE flag is used. Can anyone suggest something, troubleshooting steps that can lead to a more conclusive answer? Thanks

• Very slow Windows 7 on Thinkpad T61

  I have a very strange problem with my fresh install of Windows 7 Profesional, 64bits on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61 : The overal performance is very slow, the disk is constantly spinning, even without any program running (after boot, no other programs installed). The boot process is very slow itself (4-5 minutes). I mention that the laptop was fine on XP until the upgrade. Thanks ! Additional info (as requested by the comments) : 2GB RAM Yes, I added all the manufacturer (Lenovo) drivers and updates (using the utility provided by Lenovo) Tried with both 32 and 64 bits editions. The 32 bits one is performing a little better, but not very usable either. The hdd has enough space (20 GB or so) The problem is still present on a fresh install, so no recycle bin emptying or unistall programs (there aren't any except plain 7) would help. I'm not a newbie, so no obvious causes are left unchecked

  Since I moved my computer there's no display when I plug my screen in the video card but works fine in the mother board. I tried reseting the cmos, but I still have the same problem. The fans are spining and there's a light from the card. I tried the DVI ports and the HDMI Here's my build. I have it for 2 months and everything was working fine. Do you think it's the video card? • Read ahead buffering while playing video file from optical disc

  I was wondering if there is a program for Windows 7 (64-bit), that reads ahead the file to be played back (usually MKV files in my case) to the RAM, so the disc that the video file resides in, won't spin for the entire duration of the playback, but only every time the cache is almost empty (with big enough cache so it won't need the drive for long periods). A program that I've used in the past (called DVDIdle), was doing that universally for every video player I wanted, but they've stopped updating it 6 years ago and now it doesn't seem to work with Windows 7 (tried using compatibility mode too). The method I am using now, is to either have the drive wearing down and buzzing all the time or manually copy the entire file to HDD, SSD or RamDisk and play it from there. The closest thing I've found, is a software that slows down the drive's spin speed, but I was looking for something more convenient, automated, without waiting for an entire file to be copied before starting playback or needing any HDD space, like I've used to in the past. For an average 250mb video file it takes about an hour to encode. • Why is process not being displayed by TOP

  I am running a Mathematica script (this question probably doesn't fit in Mathematica.SE however) and I know that it generally takes up a lot of RAM and loads up my cores. • Another "Trouble copying music files from HD to 16GB thumb drive"

I try copying music files from HD to 16 GB thumbdrive and get blue screen after a few files have transfered over to thumbdrive. Computer blinks once and boom - blue screen and then reboots. This is really aggravating. I stopped anti-virus, pulled other USB attached devices - still does same thing. Any solutions out there?

  Hello Everyone, I have a problem on a brand new Windows 7 Lenovo T510 intel I5/4gb ram. When I got the Laptop, right off the bat i noticed that it would freeze up often on th most simple tasks. After a while I got fed up and reinstalled. All that is installed currently is AVG/Firefox/Office. I Rebooted after installing those things and when I try to open Firefox it freezes just trying to open. Ive tried a few other things and it freezes all the time. Any Ideas what it could be?

• How much power supply do I need for my server, and could a shortage be causing my odd crashing?

  I have 5 servers, all with similar hardware (i7, four 2tb 7200rpm drives, two 4tb 5400rpm drives, 430 watt power supply), and lately the machines have been freezing up. This has gotten worse in the last day or so, and I can't pinpoint any explanation. One recent change was adding the two 4tb hard drives. The crashes happen most often while running a large Hadoop job, so I was originally thinking the load was causing some issues, but last night one server just froze without any heavy load on the box (or so I think), other than HDFS (Hadoop's distributed file system) was probably rebalancing itself since two of the five nodes were offline. If I plugin a monitor and keyboard to one of these frozen machines, I can't get any response or feedback on the screen. Any ideas on possible points of failure and/or different logs I can look at to investigate? • recommendations for a lightweight linux distribution for a test server

  I'm planning on setting up a test server to experiment with some application servers (tomcat/jboss/...) and with some portals. Now the machine I've set aside for this is lightweight CPU/GPU wise(Atom D510, 4 gigabyte ram, 500 GiB hdd, onboard GPU). But it should suffice for most things, I'm more interested in the stability of JBoss/Tomcat for my purposes than the stability. However I'm having a bit of trouble picking an appropriate distribution size/performance/setup time wise/security wise since it seems I can't sneeze without another distribution popping up. I've been thinking about going for Fedora since I've read that that distribution has been optimized for Atom, but I'm not really familiar with it. My experience with Linux has mostly been limited to Ubuntu and some tinkering with puppylinux. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty using the command line. I'm not planning on starting a discussion per se, mostly the pros/cons that people have encountered with some distributions

• Testing a Virtualisation of a Debian Server (vmWare vSphere probably)

  I'm soon getting access to a powerful root-server (quad-core, 16gb ram, 1gbit connection) where gameservers (like minecraft,counterstrike etc.) for different customers should be setup. My plan is to use programs such as vmWare vSphere to create some virtual machines for each customer. Inside such a virtual machine I'll setup the gameserver and maybe some kind of ftp server when its needed. Now that I'm kinda new to virtualisation of servers I want to test this local on my Desktop Computer. Is it possible to create a virtual machine of debian using vmWare Player on my Windows desktop computer and then install vmware vSphere in this VM to create multiple VM's inside that VM ? Or do I really need to install Debian on my desktop computer. (I want to use the time during installations etc. to work a bit at my windows installation) Some tips on virtualising debian servers are also appreciated :)

• Why is Firefox so slow and heavy?

  For some reason, when I go to links the pages seem slow and heavy. It also has a lot of lag spikes between page loads. Basically it seems to freeze then load it all at once fast. I'm currently using Firefox 25. But when I use the same Chrome version, it seems to be very fast and smooth page loading. The CPU it takes on average is about 400,000k.
