• Google Chrome gets really slow on 10+ open tabs

  For some time already I face a problem with Google Chrome. I really love this browser, but on Windows 7 on a pretty decent machine (i5, 4GB RAM) it gets REALLY slow when I open for instance 10 techcrunch.com pages. Once I do that it becomes virtually difficult to scroll through pages and the general responsiveness of the browser gets down. And if I open 20+ or 30+ tabs there is a good chance all of them will crash. Does anyone got an idea? This happens to me on several PCs with Windows 7 64bit. At 10 tabs there is 600-700MB memory used by Chrome. Two systems have the issue are both laptops with integrated graphics. One by Intel, the other an nVidia GeForce 310M.

• BSOD after PC has been running for a while

  I'm having a problem where my computer is getting a blue screen. I have noticed that the BSOD happens after the PC has been running for about 2 days. The BSOD's seem to be an error with atikmpag.sys with an error code of 0x00000116. The problem started about a month ago.It has happened all five times that I left my computer on that long in the past month. Because my computer is a pre-built one from Dell, and I had upgraded the graphics card (at least a year ago) to a more demanding one, I replaced the stock 360W power supply that came with it. I replaced it with a more powerful, 680W one, because it seemed like the problem could be related to a lack of power supply wattage, but it didn't affect the problem at all. • Editor that supports renaming tabs for untitled docs?

  I sometimes need to copy/paste text into two windows and compare the contents for a quick hack, ie. without having to save both documents to disk, and display the two docs side-by-side vertically so I can scroll them independantly (WinMerge doesn't seem to support independent scrolling.) Since the documents only live in RAM, text editors will display a non-descript tab/filename like "Untitled1" or "New file 1": http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/1153/sidebysideunleddocs.jpg Does someone know of a Windows editor that supports... renaming tabs with more descriptive names even with documents that haven't been saved to disk, side-by-side, vertical tiling, and independant scrolling? So, I'm honestly clueless when it comes to mac's and I've never owned one before, in fact I still don't own anything with "i" in front of it (not a pc fan, but just low on cash you see:) and I was wondering if these specs are adequate? it's a MacMini G4 1.42Ghz, 1GB ram, 80Gb HDD, 32mb gfx The reason I'm looking for a mac is to start out in some iphone development, and I want a system that wont hang. would this particular system be suitable?. • Server responses "bus error" to every command

  I have a linux machine dedicated to MySQL server with a pretty high load. Today I woke up and was terrified to see, that database server is down. I could connect to it via SSH, but it was responding with bus error to each and every command. • Why does my CPU Usage reach 100% too often?

  I'm using a dual-core processor and often see my CPU usage reaches 100%. I realize this may happen if I'm running too much applications, so when I know the computer starts to run slowly, I start to close my applications. I usually run 4-5 applications simultaneously. Usually those are: web browser (Google Chrome), Adobe Photoshop, Notepad++, XAMPP, and Windows Task Manager. Usually I close tabs in my Chrome first, because I often browse the net with about 20 tabs/4 windows open, so I presume that would take much memory (bad habit, I know). But even after closing Chrome's tabs or closing other applications, my CPU Usage often stays at high percentage - 72% at best, 100% at worst. I check the Processes tab on Windows Task Manager and usually found the System, System Idle Process, or services.exe taking the highest CPU process (could reach 60). Why is this happening? And is there any solution? EDIT I have T2250 @ 1,73 Ghz and 2.5 GB RAM

  Why does Windows 7 x64 work faster than an x86 edition on my PC even though I mostly use x86 things in it? What's wrong with me, and what am I missing? Majority of the things I use is x86 (e.g. DAWs, games, media players). A considerable amount of them, however, are x64 (although their x86 counterparts work just fine). I've tried using the same things on the same system but always ended up finding Windows 7 x64 working slightly faster than x86. I'm very observant. I even notice the tiniest window animations. • Mouse Hang with voltage fluctuation

  I bought a new assembled PC about a month ago, but for the past 7 or 8 days I found my mouse cursor hangs every time there is a voltage fluctuation on my UPS (I guess it as when sound comes from ups then mouse hang for 2 or 3 sec. and them it goes normal again). My PC also seems to shut down while I'm working and it refuses to boot again - I end up needing to switch off my UPS and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. It will then boot as per normal. Could the trouble be with my PSU? Am I potentially damaging my computer by pressing and holding the power button? • pdflush hanging on Amazon EBS drives when using multi-GB files - any workaround?

  Hello, When I run gunzip on a 1.7GB file (which generates an 8GB file) on an EBS volume, pdflush freezes after gunzip runs and the CPU hangs indefinitely at 100% IO Wait. Here's the output from 'ps aux | grep pdflush'. Note the D status root 87 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? D 06:18 0:00 pdflush root 88 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? D 06:18 0:00 pdflush The only solution is to kill the pdflush processes. The processes don't die immediately either. This problem is repeatable and happens with new instances. I'm running 2xlarge instances and I have way more RAM free than is being used (i.e. /proc/meminfo shows 20+GB MemFree) Has anyone found a workaround to this problem in the past?   I've got a custom-built PC with these specs: Fractal Design Define R3 ASUS P8Z77-V motherboard Intel Core i7-2700k with Thermalright HR-02 Macho Cooler NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 with Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo II Cooler Crucial M4 128 GB SSD 1 TB Hitachi HDD G.SKILL Ares Series 2x8 GB RAM (x2) SeaSonic 520W PSU Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64) NVIDIA driver version 301.42 Upon building the PC, I overclocked the CPU (but never the GPU), and there were no problems for 1-2 months. Then I started getting crashes with this error when doing anything that's computationally or graphically intensive: I un-overclocked the CPU, but that hasn't fixed anything. This is what the inside of my case looks like: I'd appreciate any guidance on resolving this problem. I did get some of the thermal paste on the graphics card when installing the aftermarket cooler, but there were no issues for a month or two. Update I did a clean install and the issue persisted - looks like it's a hardware issue. I will try removing/cleaning/reseating all the parts.

• Enable a program in Windows to run multiple times?

  I've got this legacy software that only allows you to run one copy at a time, it detects that you have another session opened and it won't allow you to open a second instance. The problem is this is a cpu intensive program and it only use a single core. Is there any hacks or tweaks so I can trick it and open more than one instance? This would allow me to retire about 5 servers... I'm using Windows 2008 R2. I had to use cff explorer to enable the use more than 2GB RAM as the program crashes when it tries to use more than 2GB.

• Server OS: put it on a separate drive? Yes, no, or depends on the situation?

  Hi, I would like opinions, or facts, both preferably, on whether it's ok to install a server's OS on the RAID array or not. I would predict installation on separate drives is the best but I'm interested in the performance. The server in question will have 8 cores (2.4GHz ea.), 24GB RAM, and ~16TB of usable space of server-class drives in RAID10. There is also a subsytem of an ~equivalent size for backup. I will be running CPU/memory intesive applications on this server in addition to it being file storage for my work (research lab). IF I install the OS (haven't decided which one, probably Ubuntu or Fedora or some other good linux distro) on separate drives will there be any performance problems if they aren't configured in RAID10? IF it is better to have the OS on separate drives should I go for 150GB velociraptors in RAID1 or smallish SSD drives in RAID1? Money is unfortunately a factor as I think I'm close to maxing my budget as it is. Thanks!

• Mobile Intel 965 vs 4 Series chipset speed differences

  A client of ours is having a problem panning on a mapping application that we write on their panasonic toughbooks (CF-19's). One of their toughbooks the panning is fairly smooth while on the other it is really slow. Doesn't help that they have all the settings turned up, but I would of thought any reasonably new graphics card (even shared memory) would have more than adequate graphic speed. I am pretty sure that the graphic adapter is to blame, but I can't find anything out about either chipset (level of acceleration, non-problems, etc). All I get is the intel data sheets. The faster panning one is on the Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset while the slower is on the Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset. Is this expected? Does it sound like a driver problem? They both have the same amount of ram and same cpu.

• Separation of memory oriented process and CPU oriented process

  I am develops guy working for an e-commerce company I am running my e-commerce application built using ruby on rails spree commerce. I am presently running 2 medium instances in the production. One is a high memory instance which has 3.8 RAM and single Core CPU and another one is high CPU instance which has Dual Core CPU. Basically AWS calls it has m1.medium and c1.medium instance respectively. My question is it possible to separate the processes according the cpu intense and memory intense? So that all the cpu intense process can be made run in high cpu instance and all the memory intense process can be made to run in the high memory instances. Is any tool available to identify those process. Kindly give me some heads up. Thank you

• Bad IIS 7.5 performance on webserver

  I have a webpage (ASP.NET 4.0 / MVC 4). On my development machine (i5-2500 3.3 8GB Win7 VS2010 SP1 Fujitsu Esprimo P700) the page performs with 160 requests/sec on devenv webserver on my machine. The page performs with 250 requests/sec on my local IIS 7.5. (uncompiled web) The page performs with 20 requests per second on a 16core 32gb ram production server (Fujitsu RX-300 w2k8 rc2 IIS 7.5). (compiled web) Why? I think it's the IIS configuration but i can't figure out whats the problem. The page runs with 1 worker process on both machines. Web garden is not an option (it helps but the app isnt compatible with)

• Pre-load MS Windows right-click menus and Start menu at startup

  Hello brainy people. On my WinXP SP3 laptop (1.4Ghz 1.2GB ram), after I first log in, when I right-click in Windows Explorer and choose New, the submenu can take up to 15 seconds to load, which is a pain in the ass when you want to do a quick easy operation. After the submenu has loaded the first time, subsequent loads perform instantly, obviously as the menu has been cached. My question is: can these right-click menus (and the Start menu, which also takes some time to load the first time) be pre-loaded at Windows startup? Thanks.

  I recently created a vmware virtual machine with windows server 2008 enterprise as Guest. My host is Ubuntu 10.04 on my Lenovo laptop. • PC reboots regularly

  Windows XP RAID 5 drives Intel Dual Core processor 2 GB Ram I am running a processor temperature monitor. It does not appear to be overheating. I do not have virus. The PC freezes and reboots.   I saw a similar question for linux, but nothing for windows. I'm getting a new 1TB drive for my dev box @ work. The OS will be Windows 7 Pro with 8GB of RAM and just the single 1TB drive. Backups are not a concern, and I won't be storing large multimedia files. I want the fastest possible performance for general windows usage and for compilation. I will defrag nightly with a smart defragger liker perfectdisk. Should I just go with a single partition, or is there some way I can lay things out for the best performance?

  Hi, I just posted about finding bottle necks and have narrowed it down to having way too many VMs on my machine on one 15K SAS drive. I have plenty of cores and plenty of ram. So I am planning on putting 6 VMs on one drive (so 5 drives for 30 VMs). I am thinking of using a 60GB Vertex 2 SSD. Each of my VMs will only need about 6GB of HDD space so this isn't a big deal. My questions are: does ESXI support Trim and do I really need it if I leave 25% of the drive as free space? If I need it should I get a diff drive that handles garbage collection differently? I have a RAID controller w/ write caching. I will still benefit from this? Will this effect my setup differently? Is there anything I need to consider regarding SSD's in virtualized environments. • oracle virtualbox doesn't work for host Kubuntu since Lucid Lynx 10.04

  I have a thinkpad edge 14 core i3 2.4 ghz and 4g ram; I have tried kubuntu 10.04, 10.10, 11.10, 12.04 and 12.10 (all x64 architecture); Both oracle and ose virtualbox only works properly to install XP and windows 7 quest system on kubuntu 10.04; For every other kubuntu release since, the guest installation goes as far as formatting the virtual drive, freezes at this step, and doesn't even go as far as copying files to hard-drive to begin installation. But virtualbox has not stopped responding to commands; I can kill that one specific window with the problem installation ("machine" - "close" - "power off the machine") and start over again without having to force-kill virtualbox application. If anyone knows how I can go about addressing this problem, any help you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thank You.

• Good reasons to keep 32-bit desktop OS's

  Server software has been 64-bit only for a while now (Since Server 2008 R2 for Windows, even earlier for Exchange and Sharepoint) and even Ubuntu are pushing you away from 32-bit versions for their server OS's. But is there any good, quantifiable reason to keep a 32-bit desktop operating system maintained? We're preparing our Windows 8 images for the (unfortunate?) few that will be early adopters. The majority of our desktop computers have 4gb or less of RAM, but I would love to not have to bother supporting a 32-bit flavoured operating system any more. Any reason why I should?

• DisplayPort to DVI not working on Quadro FX 580

  I have a PNY NVIDIA Quadro FX 580 graphics card with 1x DVI and 2x DisplayPorts. The DVI port works fine with both my Viewsonic monitors but I cannot get either of the DPs to work using the supplied DP to DVI adapter; all I get is a "no signal" on either monitor when connected to either DP port. The NVIDIA Control Panel shows that the second monitor is not connected when in fact it is. How do I get the second monitor to work?
