  • Text selection CTRL+SHIFT+Cursor Keys?

    Hi, I'm used to this Windows behavior that using CTRL+SHIFT+Cursor Keys I can select text word-wise. CTRL+Cursor Keys jumps word-wise and I use that a lot in combination with SHIFT to select text. This seems to be a "Windows thing" because it just works in all application. Now turning to Ubuntu 10.04, it doesn't work. CTRL+SHIFT+Cursor Keys just behaves like CTRL+Cursor Keys, i.e. I jump between the words but I can't select them that way. Another gotcha: I use CTRL+Cursor Keys to move fast between words, press down SHIFT, release CTRL and move the Cursor Keys to select text char by char and it doesn't work either. I need to release both keys complete. Is there a way to enable this?

    Most of the time running a gtk application from the command line it starts dumping debug information to the stdio even though I put them in background. Example: ~$ gedit test.html # and ctrl+z to suspend zsh: suspended gedit .zshrc ~$ bg [1] + continued gedit .zshrc ~$ # do some editing (gedit:6208): GtkSourceView-WARNING **: Could not find word to remove in buffer (whoosh), this should not happen! (gedit:6208): GtkSourceView-WARNING **: Could not find word to remove in buffer (haystack), this should not happen! I want to note that the error, or warning, changes according to what I'm doing at the moment. The GtkSourceView-WARNING shown here is one of the cases. Anyway... Do you know if it's at all possible to avoid getting that information printed out?

    How to do a grep in a variable? I have stored the wget output in a variable and I need to extract out some strings from it. Like the content of the variable is upgrade http://wordpress.org/download/ http://wordpress.org/wordpress-3.0.5.zip 3.0.5 en_US 4.3 4.1.2 I need to check if the string contains the word upgrade, so I can do a simple grep and then check the exit status of it by $? and proceed. But how can I get the value 3.0.5 which is actually the fourth word? And how to actually grep in a variable?

    It’s election season in the U.S., and you know what that means. It means I stop by the recycling bin in my garage before entering the house with the contents of my mailbox. A couple of weeks ago, I was doing my usual direct mail purge when I came across a piece from The Container Store®. This piece would have gone straight to the recycling bin, but the title stopped me: Learn what WE STAND FOR! Under full disclaimer, I’m probably a “frequent flier” at The Container Store. One can never be too organized! Now, back to the direct mail piece. I opened it to discover that The Container Store has taken their customer experience beyond “a shopping experience that makes you smile” to giving customers more insight and transparency into how they feel about their employees, the vendors they partner with, and the communities they live in. The direct mail piece included several employees showcasing a skill, hobby or talent with their photo and a personal note that used one word to describe what these employees believe The Container Store stands for. I do not recall the last time I read through an entire piece of direct mail. But this time, I pored over all the comments and photos.  Summer, a salesperson, believes that one word is PASSION. Thomas in distribution center inventory systems chooses the word ACTION. The list goes on to include MATCHLESS, FUN, FAMILY, LOVE, and EMPOWERMENT. The Container Store is running a contest asking you to tell them what nonprofit organization you stand for. Anyone can submit their favorite nonprofit to win cash, products and services from The Container Store. Don’t forget about the softer side of customer experience. With many organizations working feverishly to transform their business into being more customer-centric, it’s easy to get caught up in processes and technology. Focusing on people and social responsibility often falls behind and becomes a lower priority. Keeping people and social responsibility at the forefront is crucial. Your customers will use your processes and technology, but they will see or hear your people and feel their passion. The latter is what they will remember most about your brand. Like the content of the variable is upgrade http://wordpress.org/download/ http://wordpress.org/wordpress-3.0.5.zip 3.0.5 en_US 4.3 4.1.2 I need to check if the string contains the word upgrade, so I can do a simple grep and then check the exit status of it by $? and proceed. But how can I get the value 3.0.5 which is actually the fourth word? And how to actually grep in a variable?

  • What is the term that means "keeping the arguments for different API calls as similar as possible"?

    There is a word which I can never remember... it expresses a design goal that API calls (or functions or methods or whatever) should be as similar as reasonably possible in their argument patterns. It may also extend to naming as well. In other words, all other things being equal, it is probably bad to have these three functions: deleteUser(email) petRemove(petId,species) destroyPlanet(planetName,starName) if instead you could have deleteUser(userId) deletePet(petId) deletePlanet(planetId) What is the word for this concept? I keep thinking it's "orthogonal" but it definitely isn't. Its a very important concept, and to me it's one of the biggest things that makes some APIs a joy to work with (because once you learn a few things you can pretty much use everything without looking at doco), and others a pain (because every function is done inconsistently).

    Suppose I have a dictionary of ASCII words stored in uppercase. I also want to save those words into separate files so that the total word count of each file is approximately the same. By simply looking at the word I need to know which file it should be in (if it's there at all). Duplicate words should go into the same file and overwrite the last one. My first attempt at solving this problem is to use .NET's object.GetHashCode() function and .Trim() to get one of the "random" characters that pop up. I asked a similar question here If I only use one character of object.GetHashCode() I would get a hash code character of A..Z or 0..9. However saving the result of GetHashCode to disk is a no-no so I need a substitute. Question: What algorithm (or subset of an algorithm) is appropriate for pigeonholing strings into a single character or range of characters (Like hex 0..F offers 16 chars)? Real world usage: I'll use this answer to modify the Partition key used in Azure Table storage as described here

    I recently installed Ubuntu onto an encrypted partition using the LUKS+LVM combination that the 'alternate' installer offers. Now I want to create backups of my HD. From the LUKS FAQ: 6.15 Can I clone a LUKS container? You can, but it breaks security, because the cloned container has the same header and hence the same master key. You cannot change the master key on a LUKS container, even if you change the passphrase(s), the master key stays the same. That means whoever has access to one of the clones can decrypt them all, completely bypassing the passphrases. How can the existence of a perfect clone of my encrypted HD break security if it contains the exact same information as my live encrypted HD? In which sense does keeping updated clones of my LUKS-encrypted HD around "break security"?

  • Collision detection doesn't work for automated elements in XNA 4.0

    I have a really weird problem. I made a 3D simulator of an "assembly line" as a part of a college project. Among other things it needs to be able to detect when a box object passes in front of sensor. I tried to solve this by making a model of a laser and checking if the box collides with it. I had some problems with BoundingSpheres of models meshes so I simply create a BoundingSphere and place it in the same place as the model. I organized them into a list of BoundingSpheres called "spheres" and for each model I create one BoundingSphere. All models except the box are static, so the box object has its own BoundingSphere (not a member of the "spheres" list). I also implemented a picking algorithm that I use to start the movement. But when I comment it (like in this example) the box just passes trough the lasers and does not detect the collision (the idea is that the box stops at each laser and the user passes it forth by clicking on the appropriate "switch"). As I was doing it, I was following the steps word for word, except naming the classes. In the end, I was able to create the desktop launcher for the game but not the android launcher.     I have a series of 'images' described by a mixture of connected lines and curves. Users will draw on the screen, free hand, and my goal is to break their drawing down into a series of lines and curves that can be matched with the 'images' in my set. For the sake of simplicity, let's assume this is occurring on a touch screen. These lines will be connected. Each time the user's finger moves, the dx and dy is recorded. The drawing is considered complete and analyzed when the user's finger leaves the screen. I'm having trouble figuring out a good way to break the user's drawing down into lines. Is there any well known approach to this problem, a C++ library that solves it, or any good articles/technical papers on how to achieve this?
