• Professionalism of online username / handle

  I have in the past, and continue currently, used the handle "thanatos" on a lot of Internet sites, and if that isn't available (which happens ~50% of the time), "deathanatos". "Thanatos" is the name of the Greek god or personification of death (not to be confused with Hades, the Greek god of the underworld). "Dea" is a natural play-on-words to make the handle work in situations where the preferred handle has already been taken, without having to resort to numbers and remaining pronounceable. I adopted the handle many years ago — at the time, I was reading Edith Hamilton's Mythology, and Piers Anthony's On a Pale Horse, both still favorites of mine, and the name was born out of that. When I created the handle, I was fairly young, and valued privacy while online, not giving out my name. As I've become a more competent programmer, I'm starting to want to release some of my private works under FOSS licenses and such, and sometimes under my own name. This has started to tie this handle with my real name. I've become increasingly aware of my "web image" in the last few years, as I've been job hunting. As a programmer, I have a larger-than-average web presence, and I've started to wonder: Is this handle name professional? Does a handle name matter in a professional sense? Should I "rebrand"? (While one obviously wants to avoid hateful or otherwise distasteful names, is a topic such as "death" (to which my name is tied) proper? What could be frowned upon?) To try to make this a bit more programmer specific: Programmers are online — a lot — and some of us (and some who are not us) tend to put emphasis on a "web presence". I would argue that a prudent programmer (or anyone in an occupation that interacts online a lot) would be aware of their web presence. While not strictly limited to just programmers, for better or worse, it is a part of our world.

• Big Success for the 2012 edition of the Oracle EMEA Cloud CRM Partner Community Forum!

  The 2012 edition of the Oracle EMEA Cloud Partner Community Forum took place on march 28&29 in Madrid. 100 participants from all over Europe had a chance to interact with the Oracle Cloud CRM Product Management team about multiple subjects such as Oracle Cloud CRM and Social Network solutions strategy, RightNow acquisition, Fusion CRM Business opportunities for partners, etc. During his opening keynote, Anthony Lye (Oracle Senior Vice-President and head of Oracle CRM) presented the current Fusion CRM business status, disclosed the overall Oracle CRM product strategy and responded to many questions from the audience. Later on that day, 8 Oracle ISV's presented their Oracle Cloud CRM add-on's and highlighted the value that System Integrators can benefit from as part of a Cloud CRM project. After a very friendly networking diner in a Spanish restaurant, the second day was dedicated to Fusion CRM, with a deeper dive into its major components (Sales, Sales Planning, Marketing) including the Fusion Composers. Briefings on Oracle Consulting Services Fusion CRM dedicated offerings and Fusion CRM Partner Programs concluded the day and the event. All participants rated the event as "good" to "Excellent" and mentioned that it was meaningful for them to plan their Oracle Cloud CRM based business in the near future. This was a full day event with various sessions on J2EE 6, Java Concurrency, NoSQL, MongoDB, Oracle 12c, Oracle ADF etc. It was an overwhelming response from students, auditorium was jam packed with 600+ LPU energetic students of B.Tech and MCA stream. Navein Juneja Sr. Director LPU gave the keynote and introduced the speakers of AIOUG and Delhi & NCR Java User Group (DaNJUG). Mr. Juneja explained about the LPU and its students. He explained how Oracle and Java is most used and accepted technologies in world. Rohit Dhand Additional Dean LPU came on stage and share about how his career started with Oracle databases. He encouraged students to learn these technologies and build their career. Satyendra Kumar vice-president AIOUG thanked LPU and their stuff for organizing such a good technical event and students for their overwhelming response.  He talked about the India Oracle group and its events at various geographical locations all over India. Jitendra Chittoda Co-Leader DaNJUG explained how to make a new Java User Groups (JUG), what are its benefits and how to promote it. He explained how the Indian JUGs are contributing to the different initiatives like Adopt-a-JSR and Adopt-OpenJDK. Brad talked about how Oracle's data integration products address the new data integration requirements that evolved with cloud computing, big data, and changing consumer expectations and how they set the key themes in our products’ road map. Brad explained why and how fast-time to value, high-performance and future-ready solutions is the top focus areas for product development. Another good session was delivered by long-time GoldenGate users, Comcast.  Jason Hurd and Amit Patel of Comcast talked about the various use cases they deploy Oracle GoldenGate throughout their enterprise, from database upgrades, feeding reporting systems, to active-active database synchronization.  The Comcast team shared many good tips on how to use GoldenGate for both zero downtime upgrades and active-active replication with conflict management requirement. One of our other important goals we had this year for the Data Integration track at OpenWorld was hearing from our customers. The solution is done using the ASP.Net MVC 4 and VisualStudio 2012. The article assumes the developer to have a fair amount of knowledge on ASP.Net MVC and C#. Tools Used Visual Studio 2012 ASP.Net MVC 4 Nuget Package Manager JQGrid  is one of the client grid framework built on top of the JQuery framework. It helps in building a beautiful grid with paging, sorting and exiting options. There are also other features available as extension plugins and developers can write their own if needed. You can download the JQgrid from the  JQGrid  homepage or as NUget package. I have given below the command to download the JQGrid through the package manager console. From the tools menu select “Library Package Manager” and then select “Package Manager Console”. I have given the screenshot below. This command will pull down the latest JQGrid package and adds them in the script folder. Once the script is downloaded and referenced in the project update the bundleconfig file to add the script reference in the pages. Bundleconfig can be found in the  App_Start  folder in the project structure. bundles .Add (newStyleBundle(“~/Content/jqgrid”).Include (“~/Content/ui.jqgrid.css”)); bundles.Add( newScriptBundle( “~/bundles/jquerygrid”) .Include( “~/Scripts/jqGrid/jquery.jqGrid*”)); Once added the config’s refer the bundles to the Views/Shared/LayoutPage.cshtml. Add the following lines to the head section of the page. @Styles.Render(“~/Content/jqgrid”) Add the following lines to the end of the page before html close tags. @Scripts.Render(“~/bundles/jquery”) @Scripts.Render(“~/bundles/jqueryui”) @Scripts.Render(“ ~/bundles/jquerygrid”)              That’s all to be done from the view perspective. Once these steps are done the developer can start coding for the JQGrid. In this example we will modify the HomeController for the demo. The index action will be the default action. We will add an argument for this index action. Let it be nullable bool. It’s just to mark the pdf request. In the Index.cshtml we will add a table tag with an id “ gridTable “. We will use this table for making the grid. Since JQGrid is an extension for the JQUery we will initialize the grid setting at the  script  section of the page. This script section is marked at the end of the page to improve performance. The script section is placed just below the bundle reference for JQuery and JQueryUI. An inmemory list collection is used for demo purpose. The  GetCustomerDetailsmethod is the server side action method that will provide the data as JSON list. We will see the method explanation below. It’s used to indicate for PDF download. When the application starts this method is first hit for initial page request. For PDF operation a filename is generated and then sent to the  ExportPDF  method which will take care of generating the PDF from the datasource. It’s an opensource library readily available as NUget library. This command will pulldown latest available library. I am using the version 4.1.2.0. The latest version may have changed. There are three main things in this library. Document This is the document class which takes care of creating the document sheet with particular size. We have used A4 size. There is also an option to define the rectangle size. This document instance will be further used in next methods for reference. PdfWriter PdfWriter takes the filename and the document as the reference. This class enables the document class to generate the PDF content and save them in a file. Font Using the FONT class the developer can control the font features. Since I need a nice looking font I am giving the Verdana font. Following this PdfPTable and PdfPCell are used for generating the normal table layout. We have created two set of fonts for header and footer. Font headerFont=FontFactory .GetFont(“Verdana”, 10, Color .WHITE); Font rowfont=FontFactory .GetFont(“Verdana”, 10, Color .BLUE);   We are getting the header columns as string array. Columns argument array is looped and header is generated. We are using the headerfont for this purpose. Then the control moves to the controller which will take care of sending the response as a JSON result with a filename. If the file name is not given then the PDF will open in the same page otherwise a popup will open up asking whether to save the file or open file. Return File(filePath, “application/pdf”,“list.pdf”);   The final result screen is shown below. PDF file opened below to show the output. Conclusion: This is how the export pdf is done for JQGrid. The problem area that is addressed here is the clientside grid frameworks won’t support PDF’s export. In that time it’s better to have a fine grained control over the data and generated PDF. iTextSharp has helped us to achieve our goal.

• ASP.NET: Building tree picker dialog using jQuery UI and TreeView control

In this posting I will show you how to use ASP.NET TreeView control and jQuery UI dialog component to build picker dialog that hosts tree data. If you are going to use it in some real-world application then this mark-up gets even shorter – I am sure that in most cases the data you display in TreeView comes from database or some domain specific data source. Hacking TreeView TreeView needs some little hacking to make it work as client-side component. Be warned that if you need more than I show you here you need to write a lot of JavaScript code. For more advanced scenarios I suggest you to use some jQuery based tree component. This example works for you if you need something done quickly. Number one problem is getting over the postbacks because in our scenario postbacks only screw up things. Also we need to find a way how to let our client-side code to know that something was selected from TreeView. We solve these to problems at same time: let’s move to JavaScript links. We have to make sure that when user clicks the node then information is sent to some JavaScript function. Also we have to make sure that this function returns something that is not processed by browser. Instead of postback our callback function is used and provided with selected values. In this function we are free to use node text and value as we like. Result I applied some more bells and whistles and sample data to source code to make my sample more informative. So, here is my final dialog box. Seems very basic but it is not hard to make it look more professional using style sheets. Conclusion jQuery components and ASP.NET controls have both their strong sides and weaknesses. In this posting I showed you how you can quickly produce good results when combining jQuery  and ASP.NET controls without pushing to the limits. We used simple hack to get over the postback issue of TreeView control and we made it work as client-side component that is initialized in server. You can find many other good combinations that make your UI more user-friendly and easier to use.

• Maker Faire Report - Teaching Kids Java SE Embedded for Internet of Things (IoT)

  I had a great time at this year's Maker Faire 2014 in San Mateo, Calif. where Jake Kuramoto and the AppsLab crew including Noel Portugal, Anthony Lai, Raymond, and Tony set up a super demo at the DiY table. It was a simple way to learn how Java SE Embedded technology could be used to code the Internet of Things (IoT) devices on the table. The best part of our set-up was seeing the kids sit down and do some coding without all the complexity of a Computer Science course. It was very encouraging to see how interested the kids were when walking them through the programming steps, then seeing their eyes light up when telling them, "You just coded a Java enabled Internet of Things device!" as the Raspberry Pi-connected devices turned on or started to move from their Java Embedded program. See: The AppsLab at Maker Faire It will be interesting to see how this next generation of kids grow up with all these Internet of Things devices around them and watch how they will program them. Hopefully, they will be using Java SE Embedded technology to do so. • SQL language drawbacks, The Third Manifesto

  Sometime ago I read about SQL language drawbacks (the basic language specification, not vendor specific), and one of the drawbacks was that the language does not allow to create a set of tuples that don't come from a table. For instance, SELECT firstName, lastName from people; this creates a set of tuples coming from the table people. Now, if I don't have this table people, and I want to return a constant, I'd need something like this to return a set of two tuples (this would not require to have a table): SELECT VALUES('james', 'dean'), ('tom', 'cruisse'); Why I would need that? Because of the same reasons that we can define constants (not only basic types, but objects and arrays also) in any advanced programming language. Workarounds, Yes, I could create a temporal table, fill the data, and SELECT from that table. This is a hack, to overcome the drawbacks of the poor SQL language. I think that I read about this somewhere in "The Third Manifesto", but I don't find the paragraph/example talking about this concrete drawback anymore. Do you know a reference about it?

• Quoted on MVA Voices

  A couple of weeks ago, I received an email from the Dean of Microsoft Virtual Academy (MVA) asking for permission to quote a statement I made during a jump start. Following is an excerpt from that request: "Dear Jochen, I would like to thank you for providing insight as to how the Advanced HTML5 Jump Start helped you improve your skills.  I mentioned this to the leadership team at MVA, and they were pleased to hear this so much that they would like your permission to use a quote from your email to me on the MVA website." Of course! I really enjoy those free MVA jump starts - live and later the recordings. Actually, I prefer the live ones because you really have a chance to communicate with the MVA studio team and the experts in the chat. Luckily, the live stream is provided in two quality levels and with the remote situation of Mauritius, I always have to switch to 'Standard Quality' to avoid too much buffering and to enjoy a smooth experience. Later on, the recordings are great for rehearsal and repetition of the material. You can download and watch them offline while commuting, or what I'm going to do in the future - to use them as material for a study group within the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community (MSCC). For sure, this is going to be a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to work with other Windows-oriented software craftsmen in order to 'push' them towards Microsoft certifications.
