• Add Your Own Domain to Your WordPress.com Blog

  Now that you’ve got a nice blog on WordPress.com, why not get your own domain to brand your site?  Here’s how you can easily register a new domain or move your existing domain to your WordPress site. By default, your free WordPress address is yourblog’sname.wordpress.com.  But whether this is a personal or a company blog, it can be nice to have your own domain to really brand your site and make it your own.  Or, if you already have another website and want to use WordPress as a blog for it, you could even add blog.yoursite.com or any other subdomain. Adding a domain to your WordPress.com is a paid upgrade; registering and mapping a new domain to your account costs $14.97 a year, while mapping a domain you already own to your WordPress blog costs $9.97 a year. Getting Started Login to your blog’s dashboard, click the arrow beside Upgrades in the sidebar, and select Domains. Enter the domain or subdomain you want to add to your site in the text box, and click Add domain to blog.   If you entered a new domain you want to register, WordPress will make sure the domain is available and then present you a registration form to register the domain.  Enter your information, and then click Register Domain.   Or, if you enter a domain that’s already registered, you will see the following prompt. If this domain is a domain you own, you can map it to WordPress.com.  Login to your domain registrar account and switch your nameserver to: NS1.WORDPRESS.COM NS2.WORDPRESS.COM NS3.WORDPRESS.COM Your DNS settings page for your domain may be different, depending on your registrar.  Here’s how our domain settings looked. Alternately, if you’re wanting to map a subdomain, such as blog.yoursite.com to your WordPress blog, create the following CNAME record on your domain register.  You may have to contact your domain registrar’s support to do this.  Substitute your subdomain, domain, and blog name when creating the record. subdomain.yourdomain.com. IN CNAME yourblog.wordpress.com. Once your settings are correct, click Try Again in your WordPress dashboard.  The DNS settings may take a while to update, but once WordPress can tell your DNS settings point to it, you will see the following confirmation screen.  Click Map Domain to add this domain to your WordPress blog. Now you’re ready to pay for your domain mapping or registration.  Depending on your purchase, the information and price shown may be different.  Here we’re mapping a domain we already have registered, so it costs $9.97.  Select your method of payment, enter your payment information or signin with your Paypal account, and continue as usual. Once your purchase is finished, you’ll be returned to the Domains page on WordPress.  Try going to your new domain, and make sure it opens your blog.  If it works, then click the bullet beside the new domain, and click Update Primary Domain.  Now, when people visit your WordPress site, they’ll see your new domain in the address bar.  You can still access your blog from your old yourname.wordpress.com address, but it will redirect to you new domain. Conclusion Having a personalized domain is a great way to make your blog more professional, while still taking advantage of the ease of use that WordPress.com offers.  And, if you have your own domain, you can easily move to your site traffic to a different hosting provider in the future if you need to.  The process is slightly complicated, but for $15/year we found this one of the best upgrades you could do to your WordPress.com blog. • Game Networking Help Jmonkey SpiderMonkey

  I have decided I think Jmonkey Engine will be best for my project, (an online RTS), but I have one question. If my game were to be successful (Yes I understand how slim the chances are, and how difficult this can be) I don't quite understand an aspect of networking. Do games like this require multiple servers, or only a single server? If multiple servers, I was unable to find anything regarding if Jmonkey's SpirderMonkey Networking supports this. (Something to allow equal distribution of traffic to multiple servers). UPDATE: I plan on using Jmonkey for my project. My Project is an online RTS, but with somewhat of an FPS twist. I am currently trying to figure out if the game has heavy traffic if having multiple servers to host the game is recommended. In addition to this, if using multiple hosting servers is supported in Jmonkey as I can't seem to find any documentation regarding it.

I was able to get a few minutes with Tomas Ulin, Vice President of MySQL Engineering at Oracle, to ask him some questions. Here are the highlights of my interview with Tomas. Monica: This was the first MySQL Innovation Day, correct?  Why now, what was the strategy behind hosting this kind of event? Tomas: In the last year, we have rolled out an incredible number of MySQL events worldwide – some targeted at developers that are new to MySQL and others for the MySQL savvy. At the MySQL Innovation Day, our first event of this kind,, we had a number of our key engineers presenting lightning talks delivering previews of key new features as well as discussing roadmap. Our goal is to keep an open dialogue with the MySQL community. In fact, we are hosting a two-day conference, another first, for the MySQL community called MySQL Connect on Sept. 29-30 in San Francisco. If you attended the MySQL Innovation Day and liked what we did, you are going to love MySQL Connect. We’ll have a lot more of our engineers and many users and community members presenting hour long sessions and hands on labs. Our engineers will be presenting new MySQL features as well offer previews of upcoming enhancements. Monica: What's the big take-away from today's MySQL Innovation Day? • My new DNS change works from America but not Sweden

  Several hours ago i changed nameserver and DNS info on one of my domains at my domainregistar. When i access the domain from my home computers and when my friends access the domain they get to the old ip-adress hosting the dead site(We all live in Sweden). But when i access the website from my mobile phone or through google.com/translate or North American proxies the website is shown like it should. Why is this?, does it take time for change to take effect for diffrent locations/countries? I find it very strange and would like to start using my site now. Do you think it will change or could i've been doing something wrong?

• DNS propogation question with name server change

  The registrar I have is networksolutions.com, and for quite a while, the name servers were pointing to Site5.com, where hosting is for one of my domains. I wanted to bring DNS control back to networksolutions, so I pointed the name servers back to networksolutions and added in all my A records. However, I noticed that the site soon became unreachable. I'm curious as to why this happened? If the domain was pointing to either the old name servers or the new ones, it would still have the proper A records and whatnot. Is this because when I changed name servers, a request was made to delete them completely, and then the DNS servers worldwide have to wait for network solutions to send out the new ones or something? I was hoping this would be a switch with zero downtime, such as a normal A record change.

• Security considerations for my first eStore.

  I have a website through which I am going to sell few products. It is hosted on a simple shared-hosting and does not have SSL. On the products page, each product has a Buy Now button created from my PayPal Merchant account. PayPal recommends to use it's Button Factory to create secure buttons and save it inside PayPal itself. I have followed the same advice and the code of any button is secure and does not disclose any information on either a product or it's price. When the user clicks on a Buy Now button, he/she is taken to PayPal site where a page is opened in SSL for the user to fill in the credit card and shipping details. After a successful transaction, the control is passed back to my site. I want to know whether there is still any chance when security could be compromised.

• Rendering ASP.NET MVC Razor Views outside of MVC revisited

  Last year I posted a detailed article on how to render Razor Views to string both inside of ASP.NET MVC and outside of it. In that article I showed several different approaches to capture the rendering output. The first and easiest is to use an existing MVC Controller Context to render a view by simply passing the controller context which is fairly trivial and I demonstrated a simple ViewRenderer class that simplified the process down to a couple lines of code. However, if no Controller Context is available the process is not quite as straight forward and I referenced an old, much more complex example that uses my RazorHosting library, which is a custom self-contained implementation of the Razor templating engine that can be hosted completely outside of ASP.NET. While it works inside of ASP.NET, it’s an awkward solution when running inside of ASP.NET, because it requires a bit of setup to run efficiently.Well, it turns out that I missed something in the original article, namely that it is possible to create a ControllerContext, if you have a controller instance, even if MVC didn’t create that instance. Creating a Controller Instance outside of MVCThe trick to make this work is to create an MVC Controller instance – any Controller instance – and then configure a ControllerContext through that instance. This means you can use this from within an Application_Error handler as I needed to or even from within a WebAPI controller as long as it’s running inside of ASP.NET (ie. not self-hosted). Nice.So using the ViewRenderer class from the previous article I can now very easily render an MVC view outside of the context of MVC. This also allows the constructor for the ViewRenderer from the last article to work without a controller context parameter, using a generic view as a base for the controller context when not passed:public ViewRenderer(ControllerContext controllerContext = null) { // Create a known controller from HttpContext if no context is passed if (controllerContext == null) { if (HttpContext.Current != null) controllerContext = CreateController<ErrorController>().ControllerContext; else throw new InvalidOperationException( "ViewRenderer must run in the context of an ASP.NET " + "Application and requires HttpContext.Current to be present."); } Context = controllerContext; }In this case I use the ErrorController class which is a generic controller instance that exists in the same assembly as my ViewRenderer class and that works just fine since ‘generically’ rendered views tend to not rely on anything from the controller other than the model which is explicitly passed.While these days most of my apps use MVC I do still have a number of generic pieces in most of these applications where Razor comes in handy. This includes modules like the above, which when they error often need to display error output. In other cases I need to generate string template output for emailing or logging data to disk. Being able to render simply render an arbitrary View to and pass in a model makes this super nice and easy at least within the context of an ASP.NET application!You can check out the updated ViewRenderer class below to render your ‘generic views’ from anywhere within your ASP.NET applications. • ArcSig Meeting at 04/20/2010 with Sam Abraham

The interest in Sam’s talk was immense, we almost run out of seats. The audience got an in-depth view and walkthrough of the Model View Controller functionality in Visual Studio 2010 with detailed code examples. Sam answered many user questions about practical applications in MVC. Free soft drinks and pizza kept the participants energized during the whole presentation and a raffle of books and software completed this meeting, with a preview about the upcoming meetings and events in May and June. • IE 10 Win UI Version Won&rsquo;t Support Flash*

  Rabid Gremlin has a blog post up entitled: Did Microsoft just kill Flash? IE 10 won’t run Flash unless your site is on a Microsoft whitelist! Apparently this is true…kind of. There are 2 versions of IE 10 that ship with WIndows 8. One is the Windows UI version (in this article, I’m going to reference this as IE10Metro) and one is the desktop version. These are entirely different apps, different codebases. IE10Metro will *not* serve up Flash content unless the website hosting the content has been whitelisted with Microsoft, as per this Microsoft document. IE10 for the desktop will serve Flash content without any issues. In a broader view, what this means is that web developers now need to consider another browser for testing their sites in – IE 10 Metro, in addition to IE 10 Desktop. D

• Issues installing synapse launcher

  I am trying to install synapse launcher on my desktop . I am using these two commands: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:synapse-core/ppa sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install synapse However I am getting an error with the second command saying E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. I presume this has something to do with my connection to the hosting servers. But what I don't understand is the fact that synaptic is working it just seems to be something about that ppa. I don't know what I am doing wrong as the commands are widely suggested around the web, But they don't seem to work for me! I would greatly appreciate some advice on this as it is proving to be very frustrating. Many thanks, George

• REST Framework - MS Web Api vs the rest of the field

  I am a .NET developer who is looking into the OSS world for a REST framework similar to Microsoft's Web Api. I'll be starting a personal project soon and need to develop both a web site and an API with the API coming first. I've ruled out Ruby on Rails just because I feel that with my background in C#, I can get up to speed quickly with either a Java or PHP based framework. So far I've looked at Slim (PHP) and JAX-RS and Jersey (Java). Would I want to consider any others? My API will be private at first with a public one on the roadmap. I'll be hosting the API on Heroku or some cloud based service.
