• How can I test a parser for a bespoke XML schema?

  I'm parsing a bespoke XML format into an object graph using .NET 4.0. My parser is using the System.XML namespace internally, I'm then interrogating the relevant properties of XmlNodes to create my object graph. I've got a first cut of the parser working on a basic input file and I want to put some unit tests around this before I progress on to more complex input files. Is there a pattern for how to test a parser such as this? When I started looking at this, my first move was to new up and XmlDocument, XmlNamespaceManager and create an XmlElement. But it occurs to me that this is quite lengthy and prone to human error. My parser is quite recursive as you can imagine and this might lead to testing the full system rather than the individual units (methods) of the system. So a second question might be What refactoring might make a recursive parser more testable?

  About once every couple of months I need to write a bit of code that does one thing if a particular string is found within an array of strings and something else if it is not ignoring differences in case. • No graphics after installing AMD Catalyst 12.4 and installing the recommended updates afterwards

  Some days ago, I installed Ubuntu 12.04. Since I wanted to use dualview using an external display I installed the propriatary AMD Catalyst 12.4. The graphics are fine, but if I run the updates found by the updates manager, Ubuntu won't be able to start with graphics after reboot. I installed Ubuntu 3 times until I realized what the problem was. So now I got the basic installation with Catalyst running but I can't update the system. Is there any solution to this? Or can I somehow identify which update causes this? My System is a Lenovo y560 Ideapad (Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, with AMD Radeon HD 6570M/5700 Series. Thank you in advance

• glsl demo suggestions ?

  In a lot of places I interviewed recently, I have been asked many a times if I have worked with shaders. Even though, I have read and understand the pipeline, the answer to that question has been no. Recently, one of the places asked me if I can send them a sample of 'something' that is "visually polished". So, I decided to take the plunge and wrote some simple shader in GLSL(with opengl).I now have a basic setup where I can use vbos with glsl shaders. I have a very short window left to send something to them and I was wondering if someone with experience, could suggest an idea that is interesting enough to grab someone's attention. Thanks

  I work for a small company which has less than 100 persons. Several months ago, this company offered me position of SA and I accepted. There are three teams in this company, and I work for one of them. This is the first time I work as a SA. During the past months, I find I don't have any power of management, I even can't let the team member do things (coding-related) in the way which is correct and more efficient. The team members argue with me on very very basic technical questions and I have to explain to them again and again. Though some members did take my advice, other members stubbornly program in their way which frequently proved wrong finally. Recently I feel a little tired and confused. I wonder what is correct relationship between a Software Architect and team members including the team leader? Besides, is software architect also leaded by the Team Leader?

  Can I still install and use Ubuntu without any basic knowledge of a Linux operating system - do I need any background knowledge of Linux to use Ubuntu? If so, what will be the limits of my experience? Also, I heard from http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net/ that I don't need any drivers for hardware and peripherals. • Designing a game - Where to start?

  A friend of mine and I are planning a game together to work on in our free time. It's not an extensive game, but it's not a simple one either. He's working on the story behind the game while I'm working on the graphics and code. I don't really know where to start with the game. We know what the basic type of game it's going to be and how it would be played, but I'm having a hard time of actually knowing where to begin. I have Xcode open but I don't really even know what I should be designing first. What is some advice for this writer's block? Where is a good place to start with a game? Should I design all the graphics and layout before even touching Xcode? Should I program the things I know I'll have difficulty with first before getting to the easy stuff?

• 2D management game [on hold]

  Very newbie question but I have a game idea in mind. It will be 2d and data centric, like football manager. However I am struggling to find a platform that would suit. I am an experienced line of business developer so am happy to write code, but I would like a platform that does some of the leg work for me so was avoiding OpenGL. I would also like to be able deploy to iOS, android, windows and OS X. What are the options? To be more clear, the game is not a normal platform or shooter type game, so game maker is likely to be way too basic and unity seems a little over the top (though I am not sure if the GUI options would fit?). The majority of the game is more like business screens just displaying data and having buttons to click. Are there options for this type of game (May help to look at football manager)?

• Inspecting the model in a Rails application

  I am learning some Ruby on Rails, and am a newbie. Most of my background is in ASP.net MVC on the back end. As I play with a basic scaffold project, I wonder about this case: you jump into an established Rails project and want to get to know the model. Based on what I have seen so far (again, simple scaffold), the properties for a given class are not immediately revealed. I don't see property accessors on the model classes. I do understand that this is because of the dynamic nature of Ruby and such things are not necessary or even perhaps desirable. Convention over code, I get that. (Am familiar with dynamic concepts, mostly via JS.) But if I am somewhere off in a view, and want to quickly know whether the (eg) Person object has a MiddleName property, how would I find that out? I don't have to go into the migrations, do I?

• Deploying a very simple application

  I have a very simple working console application written in C++ linked with a light static library. It is just for testing purposes. Now that the coding part is done, I would like to know the process of actually deploying the program. I wrote a very basic CMakeLists.txt that create makefiles or VS projects to build the sources. I also have a program that calls the static library in order to make some google tests. To me, the distribution of this application goes like this : to developpers : the src directory with the CMakeLists.txt file (multi-platform distribution) with a README.txt and an INSTALL.txt to users : the executable and a README.txt git repo : everything mentionned above plus the sources for testing and the gtest external lib A this point : considering the complexity of my application, am I doing it right ? Is there any reference that would formalize this deployment process so I can get better and go further ? Say I would like to add dynamic libraries that can be updated, external libraries like boost : how should I package this to deploy it in a professionnal way ?

• When do you use float and when do you use double

  Frequently in my programming experience I need to make a decision whether I should use float or double for my real numbers. Sometimes I go for float, sometimes I go for double, but really this feels more subjective. If I would be confronted to defend my decision, I would probably not give sound reasons. When do you use float and when do you use double? Do you always use double, only when memory constraints are present you go for float? Or you use always float unless the precision requirement requires you to use double? Are there some substantial differences regarding computational complexity of basic arithemtics between float and double? What are the pros and cons of using float or double? And have you even used long double?

• What cars on roads game engines are there?

  What game engines are there that support laying out a map of roads and handle vehicle movement on the roads. Something similar to the basic functionality in Transport Tycoon/Locomotion. I don't care about looks (although prettier is better) and top down or isometric is fine. I just need a simple way to create maps and move cars on it. And preferably the cars do take time to speed up and slow down as they go from stopped to full speed. Prefer in Windows (any API in Windows). I also prefer a free engine as this is just for internal use. I have found CarDriving 2D - does anyone know if it works well?

• Business not showing up on right hand side of google search

  The business I work has currently has a verified business Google+ page and in the past this page has shown up as a thumbnail during Google searches. The thumbnail brings up basic information such as our picture and operating hours etc. However, since verifying the business page, the thumbnail overview of our business does not seem to show up anymore. I have tried Google searching our business on several computers and it still just brings up the normal search results. Is there a setting I need to activate in order for the thumbnail to appear? • Why is a linked list implementation considered linear?

  My apologies for asking such a simple question. Instead of posting such basic question in SO, I felt that this is more apt a question here. I tried finding an answer for this but none of them are logically appealing or convincing to my understanding. Typically, computer memory is always linear. So is the term non linear used for a data structure in a logical sense? If so, to logically achieve non linearity in a linear computer memory, we use pointers. Right? In that case, if pointers are virtual implementations for achieving non linearity, Why would a data structure like linked list be considered linear if in reality the nodes are never physically adjacent?

• What is the difference between all-static-methods and applying a singleton pattern?

  I am making a database to store information about the users of my website (I am using stuts2 and hence Java EE technology). For the database I'll be making a DBManager. Should I apply singleton pattern here or rather make all it's methods static? I will be using this DBManager for basic things like adding, deleting and updating User profiles. Along with it, I'll use for all other querying purposes, for instance to find out whether a username already exists and to get all users for administrative purposes and stuff like that. My questions What is the benefit of singleton pattern? Which thing is most apt here? All static methods or a singleton pattern? Please compare both of them. regards shahensha P.S. • application custom stock icons not working in ubuntu unity top panel menu (aka appmenu) ("Menus Have Icons" ON)

  I recently noticed that in ubuntu unity the top menu of my apps does not show the (custom) icons I added to the gtk stock, but only the basic gtk stock icons. This happens only since the top menu is displayed in the unity top panel (appmenu) and not in the application window. In place of the correct custom icons I see "gtk-missing-image". On my apps toolbars and other menus those icons are displayed properly, the problem is only with the top menu. This happens either with pygtk2 (e.g. http://www.giuspen.com/cherrytree/) and gobject introspection (e.g. http://www.giuspen.com/nautilus-pyextensions/). I use gtk ui manager after integrating the stock icons this way: factory = gtk.IconFactory() pixbuf = gtk.gdk.pixbuf_new_from_file(filepath) iconset = gtk.IconSet(pixbuf) factory.add(stock_name, iconset) factory.add_default() If anybody solved this problem please help. • Rendering order in an Entity System

  Say I use a basic ES approach, and also inside Systems I hold lists of all entities that Systems are required to process. How do I maintain this list of entities in desired rendering order, i.e. for a dumb 2D RenderingSystem? I saw this discussion, and what they suggest is to do something like Z ordering - what I would probably do is just to store a "layer" int in DrawableComponent and then, inside RenderingSystem, just sort entities by mentioned "layer" whenever the entity list for RenderingSystem changes. They also say we could just delete and recreate the entity whenever we want it on the top, but it seems too inflexible to me. How is this problem usually solved?

  Yesterday, Twitter was hit with a "Cascading Bug" as described in this blog post: A “cascading bug” is a bug with an effect that isn’t confined to a particular software element, but rather its effect “cascades” into other elements as well. I've seen this kind of bug, on a smaller scale of course, on some projects I've worked on. They can be difficult to identify in dev/test environments, even within a test driven development environment. My questions are... What are some strategies you use, beyond the basic TDD and standard regression testing, to identify and prevent the potential trouble points that might only occur in the production environment? Does the presence of such problems indicate a breakdown in the software development process or simply a by-product of complex software systems?
