• Login problems on SQL EXPRESS using a user

  Hello Serverfault. First time I set up a SQL server, so I hope you can help me out. I have a problem regarding logging in using SQL auth on my SQL EXPRESS 2008. I have added a user though the management interface as you can see on the image below. But as soon as I try to login using SQL auth I get an error the login failed for the user. The server log says: Login failed for user 'zebisgaard'. Reason: Could not find a login matching the name provided. [CLIENT: <named pipe>] Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 5. Do you have an idea why? I have triple checked that the username/password is correct, tried to recreate the user and so much more. And all this is localhost.

• Using search and replace to remove line breaks in Open Office

  Hi, I've imported a document into Open Office and it has a number of hard returns in wrong places. In MS Word, I could use the search and replace to simply get rid of them all easily, but Open Office's earch won't find them. I tried /n with the 'use regular expressions' box checked, but it seems that only looks for 'shift-enter' breaks and not ordinary hard returns. Is there another way to remove them all quickly, or do I have to go manually through the document and remove each one individually. This is a surprising oversight for Open Office.

• Weird noise while scanning, using scanimage and a Canon Lide 35

  I'm trying to scan a bunch of images, using xsane's scanimage : scanimage --format=tiff --batch --batch-prompt This command scans the first picture perfectly, but as soon as I press enter, the scanner makes a weird noise, and the scanning "arm" moves very, very slowly. If I stop scanimage and start again, it scans normally again. Is there another scanimage option that I need to add? I've checked the man page, but can't see what I'm missing. Edit: the problem seems to be that the scanning "arm" doesn't go back to it's original position after the first scan.

• Very large log files in IIS 7.x

  Hello, I had a site stop working today and when I RDP'd into the server I saw a warning about low disk space. The first thing I checked was the inetpub folder where the log files are stored and sure enough it was huge, 40 GB huge. I do clean the files monthly but what is causing a day's worth of logging on a medium activity site (www.vbdotnetforums.com) to create 300-500 MB log files? I do have everything being logged so my SmarterStats software gives me the most info, but are there specific things I should/can turn off that is causing the most growth in these log files? Also, sure would be nice if Microsoft someday had some sort of log file management such as deleting log files after they exceed a certain size (total), X days, etc. We all have to come up with some solution to delete the old ones manually. • Wireless internet connection connects but internet does not work (no packets received). Wired does.

  When I connect my PC via ethernet cable to my ADSL router it works fine. When I connect via Wireless it connects and the internet will work for a random amount of time and then stop working. It stays connected with a strong signal but no packets are received. My laptop/iphone are right next to it and wireless works fine. If I open the Wireless USB status, it says it is connected to my SSID with full strength (54 mps - I am 3 meteres away from my router) and the activty shows as Packets 594 SENT and 105 RECEIVED (this goes up VERY slowly) I have tried the following: Turned off anitvirus and firewall completely. Tested the wifi signal- I am writing this on my laptop which is next to my PC and also has full wifi strength. Tried a different wireless adapter - I dug out an old PCI wireless card - it does the exact same thing. Compared all wireless settings to my laptop. I can ping google.com and it replies (sometimes with packet loss) When I reboot the PC it will connect for a minute or two (random time) and then just stops again. I tried Firefox, IE etc. no joy I have updated all latest versions (Netgear WG111v2) and drivers Checked Event Log - nothing unusual Ping the router (and even connect as admin for the few minutes when the internet does work) Changed the MTU down to 1200 using DrTCP Checked Device Manager for conflicts - none. I ping the router from the PC (192.168.0.10 - 192.168.0.1) and it replies with 4 packets. BUT, on my router admin page (which I access via http on my laptop wirelessly) - if I ping 192.168.0.10 all packets timeout (pinging my laptop 192.168.0.12 works fine) My router admin page shows the leased IP address for 192.168.0.10 (ie it is definitely talking to the router initially) Now I am out of ideas - please help. I think it is an OS/Software issue as I have tried 2 different wireless adapaters (PCI and USB) with the same result but all other wireless devices work fine around mine). It's not the firewall. It is getting assigned an IP address correctly (my PC gets 192.168.0.10, my laptop is .12) It is assigned by DHCP. As soon as I plug in the ethernet cable it all works fine. Repairing the adapter sometimes helps but it will always stop working after a random time. The wireless adapter always shows as connected with Excellent signal but the internet does not work. I am running Windows XP SP3 and have tried a Netgear WG111v2 USB adapter. Thanks in advance! UPDATE: The internet seems to be working, it is just either sending packets too small or slow to work (some small pages load bits of them very slowly but then hang). • Server 2008 Active Directory DNS Entries Deleted. Dcdiag unable to contact local AD controller.

  I've never seen anything like this. At a potential customer site, I noticed that the PC's were all unable to locate the domain controller and netlogon was failing. I fixed the DNS entries on the client PC's so the AD server was DNS server and tried to rejoin the domain. The PC was unable to locate the domain controller. On the server, I checked the DNS settings and while there is the high level AD folder, every single entry related to Active Directory appears to have been completely deleted. There are no backups from what I can tell and this has been happening for 6 months at least. Does anyone have any recommendations for repairing this? Thanks.

• how to make run cron on OSX 10.6.2?

  Note: this question is not about how to edit cron tab but how to make cron work I edited my cron using env EDITOR=joe crontab -e I entered 1 * * * * echo 'test' > /Users/radek/Backup/rationalvmware/test.txt and it does nothing although the cron is set up correctly. Checked via Cronnix and viewed the cron in /var/cron/tabs. Editing crontab using Cronnix gives me the same results. If I run echo 'test' > /Users/radek/Backup/rationalvmware/test.txt manually it creates a files as expected so I assume that the command I provide to cron is correct one. Is there anything special I have to do to make cron work on OSX? How can I check it the the cron is running. What's the equivalent of /var/log/messages on OSX? I can see in messages on SuSE that cron works.

• Visual Studio 2005 Open Project Dialog Slow as Molasses

  Whenever I try to open a project in Visual Studio 2005 (Windows XP), my open project dialog become slow as molasses - navigating down one level of folders typically takes almost 60 seconds. Finding the project and opening it can take up 4-5 minutes, which is just ridiculous. I've checked the open project dialogs of other programs - only VS2005 is acting this way. What could be causing this problem and how do I go about solving it (apart from reinstalling VS2005 / windows) (Edit: Even VS2008 on the same machine does not have this problem. I don't know what's wrong.) Thanks!

• Prevent IIS7 HTTPS from binding to all SSL IP addresses

  I've had this interesting problem with IIS7. I have a number of HTTPS sites in IIS7. That hasn't been a problem, until I wanted to go and set up VisualSVN Server using an SSL certificate. The installer had trouble starting the service. When I looked in the event log, the error was that "the file is already in use by another process." I figured that the "file" was really a socket, and checked with netstat - even though IIS was only bound to three specific IP addresses (.160, .156, and .168) with port 443, it was consuming *:443. I could stop the World Wide Web Publishing Service, start VisualSVN, and then start IIS, but then none of my SSL servers would start. Any helpful hints about how I could make IIS not try to default-bind to *:443? Thanks!!

• Postfix smtp error 450 (failed to add recipient)

  I have debian server with postfix and roundcube. After an attack we are on 2 blacklists, but I don't think that this is the main problem. I can't send mail to any address. I tried to find the cause...I checked var/spool/postfix/etc/resolv.conf and resolv.etc and they're the same with this content: nameserver 127.0.0.1 nameserver localhost In var/log/mail.err I found: cyrus/imap[25452]: DBERROR: opening /var/lib/cyrus/user/m/[email protected]: cyrusdb error cyrus/imap[25452]: DBERROR: skiplist recovery /var/lib/cyrus/user/m/[email protected]: ADD at 1FC0 exists When I try to send email from roundcube, I get the message from title. • Where does Windows 8 put the exe of the default browser for Modern UI?

  I was trying to some hack with Win-8 and I found something which is really gonna out my mind. When I set the default browser to the IE then its icon become Modern UI and I can't see the option Open file location at the bottom when I select it by right click. But if I don't set it default then it became a desktop version icon and show up the option when I select it. Same is for the Google Chrome when I checked it. IE icon when it is not set to default, I can see the option open file location. Google Chrome icon when it is set to default. Google Chrome of desktop version when it is set to default. So my question is where does Modern UI keep exe of the default browser? And why the default browser has Modern UI icon and non-default browser has desktop version icon.

• How not to send all traffic over SBS connection?

  Hi, My girlfriend uses SBS Connection Manager to connect to her company's network. The problem is that the internet connection is überslow at work, so she wants to use the home internet connection to surf the web and use the SBS Connection to get to her work stuff. Normally with a VPN connection you just have to uncheck a box "Send all traffic over VPN connection" or "Use VPN as default gateway" or something like that. As I've never seen this SBS Connection Manager-thing before, I've no idea where to uncheck a similar box. (I've checked the properties of the connection in Network Connections, but it only has a few options about logging and firewall). Thanks for any help in advance! Kind regards, Niels R.

• ADFS 2.0 Farm - How do I perform an immediate sync

  Hi, We're using ADFS 2.0 on a windows 2008 server, it's in a farm and has the default polling interval of 5 minutes. We're making a change tonight and would rather sync immediately than wait for the other guy to update, especially as we might be making multiple changes. This Technet article mentions that I can change the polling interval or do an immediate sync between my servers: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee913581%28WS.10%29.aspx I checked the powershell commandlets for ADFS and I can only seem to find one that let's me set the polling interval, but not perform a 1 time immediate sync Searched the usual suspects, but just can't find a ADFS-SyncMyStuffNow command... • Laptop not charging when connected to mains outlet

  I've had this laptop for a few weeks now, it's a Sony Vaio. I went to charge it a few days ago and plugged in the power cable, but it's not charging. The battery icon in the Windows taskbar to the bottom right says it's plugged in and charging, but the charge level never goes above 2%. I have checked and I don't have a hcarging switch on the laptop anywhere, so it should be charging. If I unplug the cable, the laptop runs out of power within 30 seconds or so, further fueling my thought that it's a faulty battery. Anyone have any bright ideas? If this doesn't get fixed I'll just ring up Sony and get them to send me a replacement battery or something. Thanks.

• Windows detected a hard disk failure* - what should I do?

  I'm using Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, I'm getting windows error popups like this one for about 3 days, multiple times a day: This Samsung SpinPoint F3 HD502HJ 500 GB is about 2 years old and I already checked it with Samsung ES Tool 3.0, did all the scans (took hours) and everything is fine! I have no malware, viruses and this started to happen after I have had some electrcity issues at my house (multiple power surges / overvolatege during the night, PC was connected, but turned off), any ideas? What other test should I perform? I believe the disk could be damaged, but then diagnostic tools should prove this, right? *in fact "Windows detected hard disk problem" but I was unable to put word "problem" within the title as well.

• bash code in rc.local not excuting after bootup

  Does anyone know why a system would not execute the script code within rc.local on bootup? I have a post configuration bash script that I want to run after the initial install of VMware ESX (Red Hat), and for some reason it doesn't seem to execute. I have the setup to log its start of execution and even its progress so that I can see how far it gets in case it fails at some point, but even when I look at that log, I am finding that didn't even started the execution of the script code. I already checked to see that script has execution permissions (755), what else should I be looking at? • Install Win7 on Dell XPS1730: CD Driver missing

  Vista crashed on my DELL XPS 1730 laptop. Again. I deleted the RAID array, created a new one and started to install Window 7 from DVD. During the initial phase of installation the setup pop ups this: Load Driver: A required CD/DVD device driver is missing... I can then insert other media to load the drivers, but it can't find any. I checked the DELL site for drivers but I can only find firmware for the drive. Which driver do I need, and where can I download it?

• What's created this key combo?

  I've recently upgraded my iMac to OSX Mavericks. I'm finding that when I press Control-Shift-N something is immediately locking my screen and making it dark. I can still hear my streaming audio playing, so I guess it's not logging me out. I've looked carefully through the list of keyboard shortcuts in System Preferences, and that key combo isn't mentioned anywhere. Is there any place I can get a list of all active keyboard shortcuts? Is there any terminal command I can run to see which application has taken over this keypress combination? It's really annoying because I habitually use that combo in PHPStorm! (And yes, I have checked the keymaps there too.)

• Hosting provider that allows you to host your own VM image?

  I've already looked at the 'Best Hosted VM Provider' question and checked the recommendations there, but I seem to have slightly odd requirements. Basically, I am looking for a host that allows me to host a VM image I supply (FreeBSD, which most of the suggested hosters don't support, they only seem to support various Linuxes) instead of one of their standard images. I'm a long time BSD user and have had colo BSD servers in the past so I'm pretty sure that i don't need much in the way of software support, but I'd basically like to run my server on managed hardware without having to rent the whole server. For the usage I have that would way OTT as we're talking a couple of small apps with very few users, a couple of blogs and (most importantly) email hosting for about 6-10 domains with moderate traffic levels. Oh, and reliability trumps cost to a certain extent.

• SBS 2008 DNS issues in BPA

  I'm gettng constant Critical Issue events in the Small Business Server Best Practices Analyser & resulting SBS Console reports that begin "The DNS client is not configured to point only to the internal IP address of the server.". When I check the DNS Manager, there are two separate IPs listed, one ***.***.***.2 and the other ***.***.***.28. I have checked online after an ipconfig /all and have found the reason for this to be that the second IP is created by DHCP for RAS & VPN purposes. It seems to cause no conflicts of any detrimental result apart from constantly sending me error messages and alerted reports. Does anyone know of a way that I can change settings somewhere so that Windows accepts this second IP, or at least stops alerting me of its prescence? Perhaps a registry hack of some kind...? • Munin "Available entropy" when using address space layout randomization

  Having just configured Munin for statistics logging on my gentoo server (hardened profile), I am noticing that my "Available entropy" is consitently in the 200-300 range. This seems way to low, so I checked it manually using the command $ cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail 3544 Odd. Consistently very low values in Munin and practically filled up when checking manually. After thinking about the problem for a while I came to the conclusion that the problem is probably that I'm using Adress Space Layout Randomization which is using the entropy when running commands/programs. Since Munin runs a whole slew of programs all the entropy is used up, and Munin then measures how much entropy there is, resulting in the low values. Does anyone have any experience with this? How can this be avoided?

  I have a one desktop running windows 7 ultimate connected to Ethernet cable. And I want to share folder to another wifi connected laptop (also windows 7 ultimate). Both machines are on the same home internet connection. I have tried to share folders by going to properties sharing advanced sharing permissions checked all the boxes to allow all but I don’t see any shared files on my laptop. I know it’s possible to share folders between two Wi-Fi connected machines but how can it be done when one pc is cable connected and other is Wi-Fi connected on the same internet connection.

• Original sender is not correctly identified when spam is forwarded

  I have a forwarding rule with Postfix that forwards all messages to my main email address. When a spam message is sent to one of my emails, it is forwarded but the sender is shown as being the forwarding domain, not the spammer's domain. Real example: mywebsite.com is hosted on Linode. [email protected] sends an email to [email protected] the mail is forwarded to [email protected] my email hosting (anotherwebsite.com) sees it's spam and sends a message to [email protected] and Linode reports a TOS violation. I have modified my postfix settings so I now use RBL, but if a message goes through, it may happen again. How can I prevent this to happen again? Is there some settings to change on Postfix so the original sender is correctly identified? Thanks Stephan EDIT: The steps I did to prevent this to happen again are: Add RBL checking to Postfix Add postgrey to Postfix And finally fix the MX record which was incorrect. I checked with a test email on Spamcop.net and the original sender is correctly identified.
