  Are there any Informix-specific guides for optimizing any operating system where an ifx engine is running? For example, in Linux, strip-down to a bare minimum all unecessary binaries, daemons, utilities, tune kernel parameters, optimize raw and cooked devices (hdparm). Someday, maybe, informix can create its own proprietary PICK-like O/S. The general idea is for the OS where ifx sits on have the smallest footprint, lowest overhead impact on ifx and provide optimized ifx performance.

• Use Dynamic DNS to access Java servlet, still need port forward ?

  If I use Dynamic DNS such as the free service at https://www.dyndns.com, do I still need to set up static IP and do port forward ? I have a DSL, most likely with dynamic IP address, and I run a Java servlet to get Paypal IPN messages on my notebook, in order for the messages to reach my notebook, I : [1] set up static IP and [2] did port forwarding. But I found each time the PC re-starts, it has a different external IP, so I was suggested to [3] get Dynamic DNS service like the free one mentioned above, but now I'm a bit confused, if I have step [3], do I still need to do [1] and [2], isn't step [3] supposed to do [1] and [2] for me ? But since I've already done [1],[2], now I wonder if they would cause trouble for step [3], do I need to undo them ? Or do I need all of them together ?

• How can I download a file directly to a web server?

  I'd like to download files directly to a hosted server, whether it's one I set up myself or a hosted service like Dropbox. For example, when I download a podcast, instead of downloading it to my computer then uploading it to the server, how can I have it download directly to the cloud. My interest here is reducing the traffic I'm using over a metered data plan on my laptop, so I don't want my computer acting as a physical intermediary caching the file. Ideally, there would be some way for me to have a download link and tell it to go directly to my server. How can I accomplish this? I realize that this question is potentially involving a "webapp" and it is potentially involving "server administration" and since my goal is to cut my computer out of the loop I can see people saying this is off-topic and should be on another site. My issue is this: I don't know if this is going to be a webapp solution or a server solution but I do know regardless I'm going to be using a computer to get it done and I am replacing a function that's currently done on my computer so I figured I'd ask it here. If I was wrong and this definitely should be at webapps feel free to let me know or just migrate it.

• Is “Application Programming Interface” a bad name?

  Application programming interface seems like a bad name for what it is. Is there a reason it was named such? I understand that people used to call them Advanced Programming Interfaces and then renamed to Application Programming Interface. Is that why it is poorly named? Why is it not named Application (to) Programmer Interface. I guess I'm just confused of the meaning behind that name? I write more about my confusion around the name here: BREAKING DOWN THE WORD “APPLICATION PROGRAMMING INTERFACE” This is a very confusing word. We mostly understand what the word Interface means, but “Application Programming”, what even is that. Honestly I'm confused. Is that suppose to be two words like “Application”, “Programming” and then the “Interface” is suppose to mean between the two? Like would a “Computer Human Interface” be an interface between a “Computer” and a “Human” (monitor , keyboard, mouse ) or is a “Computer Human” a real thing - perhaps the terminator. So a CHI is our boy Kyle Reese who is the only way we are able to work with the computer human. I think more likely “Application Programming Interface” was simply poorly named and doesn't really make sense. It was originally called an “Advanced Programming Interface” , but perhaps being a bit to ostentatious merged into the now wildly accepted “Application Programming Interface”. So now, not wanting to change an acronym has confused the living heck out everyone.... Any thoughts or clarification would be great, I'm giving a lecture on this topic in a month, so I would prefer not to BS my way through it.

How should they work? What if i set EMP3C to 0? What if i change MaxBandwidth to higher number? Should i change these on my local computer and/or on the remote computer?

• Using an old PC case and power supply as a HDD Enclosure?

  I have 5 HDD and my computer is not handling the situation very well. hehe There are some towers that I can buy to put 4 of my drives out, but I'm thinking that I could use the power source of a failed computer I have and use it to power the 4 (or at least 3) of the drives. The data cables (SATA) will remain connected to the working computer (so no USB solution). The problem is that the power source will not work unless it is connected to the failing computer motherboard. Is there any way I could use the power source without plunging it to the old motherboard? Any "HOW-TO" links may be useful as well.

• How to recover deleted NTFS partitions?

  Last night I made a terrible mistake. I was reinstalling Windows and I accidentally deleted all the partitions on all my drives. I realized my mistake before I had created any partitions, so nothing has been written to any of the disks. I'm currently at my wits' end about what I'll do if I don't manage to recover the data. I have two 1TB drives and a 2TB. One of the 1TB was the drive I was supposed to be reformatting so nothing to be recovered there. I am currently in a Linux livecd. In this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/245725 Microsoft advises to recreate the exact same partition but choose not to format it, and then recover the backup boot sector from the end of the ntfs volume. But none of the drives I want to recover are bootable drives. So does that mean I do not need to rewrite the boot sector? As in if I simply recreate a partition of the same size it will see all my data?   It is practically impossible to teach good programming to students that have had a prior exposure to BASIC: as potential programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration -- Edsger W. Dijkstra I have deep respect to Dijkstra but I don't agree with everything he said/wrote. I disagree specially with this quote on linked paper wrote 35 years ago about the Dartmouth BASIC implementation. Many of my coworkers or friends programmers started with BASIC, questions below have answers that indicate many programmers had their first experience on programming at BASIC. AFAIK many good programmers started at BASIC programming. I'm not talking about Visual Basic or other "modern" dialects of BASIC running on machines full of resources. I'm talking about old times BASIC running on "toy" computer, that the programmer had to worry about saving small numbers that need not be calculated as a string to save a measly byte because the computer had only a few hundreds of them, or have to use computed goto for lack of a more powerful feature, and many other things which require the programmer to think much before doing something and forcing the programmer to be creative. If you had experience with old time BASIC on a machine with limited resources (have in mind that a simple micro-controller today has much more resources than a computer in 1975, do you think that BASIC help your mind to find better solutions, to think like an engineer or BASIC drag you to dark side of programming and mutilated you mentally? Is good to learn a programming language running on a computer full of resources where the novice programmer can do all wrong and the program runs without big problems? Or is it better to learn where the programmer can't go wrong? What can you say about the BASIC have helped you to be a better/worse programmer? Would you teach old BASIC running on a 2KB (virtual) machine to a coming programmer? Sure, only exposure to BASIC is bad. Maybe you share my opinion that modern BASIC doesn't help too much because modern BASIC, as long other programming languages, gives facilities which allow the programmer doesn't think deeper. • smb mount cannot sync file automatically

  Under Ubuntu, I use smb to mount the directory of the server(Ubuntu too), and set to a local directory, like /home/username/server. When I change some files of local directory, the files in the server change too. However, when I change some files of the server, the files in local directory don't change. Does someone know what the reason is ? And could someone fix it and make local changes updated to the server so that I could edit local and make in the server?

• Reset Mac OS X (Snow Leopard) File Permissions -- All Files

  Is their a script or process completely reset all file system file permissions to factory default? (Less restoring from a image backup or reinstalling the OS). This would include I've affected all files from / to Applications and home folder and all contents. (Everything) I've tried to use the Disk Utility's First Aid 'Repair Disk Permissions' but it didn't seem to touch or affect everything - some but not all. I've ran it twice so far... I've seen this but it's not quite the something. Fixing mac user file permissions, not the system The reason for all of this is I accidentally ran a chmod on all files (as sudo). Working too fast, now I'm in a hole.

• How does Ubuntu One work? Files seem to upload but can not be accessed on another system

  I have two computers running 12.04, I sign into my Ubuntu 0ne account on each computer, "Hi JQPublic" both say. Do I understand correctly that placing a file (specifically an .ogg music file ... simply a song) into the "Ubuntu One" file folder (always synced) on one computer, I should be able to open the "Ubuntu One" file folder on the other computer and find said .ogg, right? That is how this is meant to work, yes? Because it's not what's happening. Nothing uploads (though the first computer claims such). Minutes pass, still nothing. A different experiment: I uploaded a file folder containing a song; the folder was available on both computers, but remained decidedly empty. Any suggestions? I'm otherwise LOVING my return to Ubuntu (left at 9.04). I really am inclined to think that I'm missing something HUGE, that this is all a user (me) error, not a bug ... is it me? • How to stabilize PCIe sound card in its card slot?

  I have a Soundblaster Recon 3d Fatal1ty sound card and randomly every once in a while my computer won't recognize it. I am almost 100% sure it is something to do with its PCIe slot. After I turn off the computer and just wiggle the card a bit, the computer recognizes the card once I restart. I can't really try it in the other PCIe slot because the video card gets in the way. It is a Biostar TA970XE motherboard. I don't know if it is something to do with the pins on the actual card or if it is something to do with the slot. I couldn't find any related issues about this card on Google. Is there anything I can do to help secure the card in its slot so that my computer will recognize it? Any help is appreciated.

• Logitech Optical Mouse Frozen In Middle of Windows XP Pro Screen

  I have a Logitech Optical Mouse/Keyboard. I have been using them just fine with the system drivers for almost a year now. I recently updated my Kaspersky software and rebooted. Now the mouse is frozen in the middle of my screen. I am not able to login to the Windows XP Pro box that has the frozen mouse (because i can't work the mouse) but am able to remote desktop to this computer. Things I know / have tried: When I boot on the problem computer, I am able to use the keyboard, but not the mouse. I have installed the latest version of Logitech's SetPoint (with the updated drivers) on the problem computer (via remote desktop) and that didn't seem to matter. I bought new batteries for the mouse and that didn't matter. I have tried the mouse/keyboard on another computer and the mouse works just fine there. My suspicion is that the Kaspersky install has overwritten a driver of some sort. Things I have not done (and would appreciate detailed steps if you feel this is the way to go): 1) Uninstalled all the mouse drivers on the machine and reboot. Then, reinstall. Note: When I get to the Device Manager I don't see an option for Human Interface Devices (where the mouse device is). Here are my options: Computer, Disk Drives, DVD/CD-Rom drives, Floppy controllers, IDE ATA/ATAPI, Imaging devices, Network Adapters, Other devices, Ports, Processors, Sound, video, and gaming, System devices, USB controllers. Also, I should point out that Video Controller is the only thing under Other devices and it has a yellow exclamation mark. The same is true for all the items under Universal Serial Bus controllers. I think this means I have to update my BIOS but, since my mouse was working just fine without doing that, I don't think that is my problem. So, how do I get to my Mouse Device? 2) Update my BIOS. Note: As pointed out above, I don't think this matters as my mouse was working just fine under my computer's current BIOS version. Thanks for your help.

• Remote Desktop connection repeatedly aborting

  I connect to my workplace computer using Remote Desktop. After 1-2 minutes the application freezes to tell me after one more minute that the connection was aborted. It then reconnects. Everything works again for 1-2 minutes. Then the process repeats. Probably Forever. My coworkers do not experience such problems when connecting to the workplace. My workplace computer: Windows 7 32bit My home computer: Windows 7 64bit connected to the internet via WLAN-router with integrated ADSL modem (Linksys WAG200G) Things I already tried to fix the problem: disabled the Windows firewall disabled the other firewall reduced the MTU upgraded the firmware on the router configured port-forwarding to forward all packets to my home computer The problem remains unchanged. What could be the cause of the connection aborts? What else can I try to fix the connection? Thanks in advance.

• HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z Not Showing up in Remote Desktop (Terminal Services)

  I installed this printer on a windows XP machine. First using the wireless option, and later using USB. In both cases when I connect to my other computer (also Windows XP) via terminal services and check printers in the local resources tab it does not show up on the remote session. I used to have a Samsung connected to my local computer over USB and and that worked fine over terminal services. Things I tried so far: I did read this page and installed the software fix on both computers: (Printers that use ports that do not begin with...) I installed the minimum HP software install on the remote computer and that didn't help either. I also tried running the add new printer wizard on the remote computer: I selected "local printer attached to this computer" and did not check the "automatically.." option. On the next page of the wizard I can select an option for "use the following port". I see options for TS001 through TS009 there. I'm assuming those are coming from the local machine. I tried clicking each one and then checking "have disk" and pointing it to C:\3be8dc611b11322e8ddf8a67\i386\msxpsdrv.inf 1 but for every single TS00.. port it says "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware." Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty stuck at this point. 1 C:\3be8dc611b11322e8ddf8a67 is the folder I extracted the HP driver software to after I downloaded it.

• Laptop shuts down upon waking from suspend

  The computer enters suspend either by closing lid, choosing suspend from the top-right drop down, or hitting the power button and pressing suspend. It doesn't matter. I then attempt to wake the computer either by opening the lid (if it was closed) or hitting the power button. Again, doesn't matter. The computer will then immediately shutdown about 50% of the time. It seems to be more likely to shut down the longer it has been on suspend. I took a snapshot of /var/log/pm-suspend.log after a successfully resume and a shutdown. The only difference (outside of timestamps of course) was that a successful resume, after reporting the success of various suspend hooks, writes: Thu Jul 5 21:36:45 PDT 2012: performing suspend Thu Jul 5 21:37:10 PDT 2012: Awake. Thu Jul 5 21:37:10 PDT 2012: Running hooks for resume and then reports successful resume hooks. When it shuts down, the log ends at "performing suspend". I diffed the two files so I know this is the only difference. Thus, it looks like it's not even trying to wake up. Would love some ideas on this one. I've scoured the web but can't seem to find anyone else running into the same issue (it seems more common that the computer shuts down upon entering suspend, or only on hitting the power button to wake, and haven't seen any that are random like mine). I'll update with any requested information.

• PsExec and Remote Environment Variables, Logging, Etc.

  When I run PsExec on a remote computer, I always fall short of what I want. What I would like ideally in most situations is a) a log on an admin server where each individual log has the name of each the remote computer it was generated from (e.g. COMPNAME1.log, COMPNAME2.log, etc.) or b) a log file on each remote computer with whatever name I specify. When I try scenario (a), I use the following command. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username cmd /c echo TEST >> \\server.company.tld\share\%computername%.log Problem is that it never works. All the computers just write to the log where %computername% is just the computer I execute PsExec from in my office. What I want are unique logs for each computer specific in the listofcomputers.txt that will correctly use the hostname from the remote environment variable without issue. Is that even possible? It does not seem to work for me. I tried this, and the syntax is clearly wrong. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username "cmd /c echo TEST >> \\server.company.tld\share\%computername%.log" PsExec just fails saying the system file cannot be found (read: syntax fail). As for scenario (b), it appears to be a variation of a similar problem. When I run a command like this, it does not work. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username "cmd /c echo %computername% >> \\server.company.tld\share\aggregated.log" Is there something I do not understand about remote path and environment variables with PsExec on the cmd.exe console (I have not even tried the dreaded PowerShell yet). I know such things work in a batch file (cmd /c \\server.company.tld\share\runthis.bat), but is there a reason it will not work when executing commands as arguments? I always need this, and can never get it!

• How to browse Windows XP from Mac Finder when name disappears from finder

  Occasionally, like right at this moment, I cannot access my windows share from my mac. Normally, it works, but every now and then, the computer name won't be displayed under SHARED in Finder. Rebooting the windows computer usually fixes this, but it's inconvenient. The Windows computer can see the Mac on the network. Is there a method of asking finder to poll for windows shares again, or "forcing" finder to look for "desktop"? I'm looking for the equivalent of \desktop in the address bar of a Windows computer. • Web Site Serving, Cloud-Computing, oh, my

  I'm planning a software based service. To give it a bit of context (type of traffic), assume it similar to facebook in nature (with a little GitHub thrown in). I've been trying to understand my different hosting options. I've been using a shared host with GoDaddy for years just fine. I currently host a Wordpress web site there and I've not had any problems. Quite frankly, they've taken good care of me. However, the nature of a shared hosting environment is limited in nature. For example, I can't do anything but host a web site there. For example, I can not run a Mercurial server. Last time I attempted to build a web application with the intention of eventually launching it via GoDaddy, I ran in to all sorts of troubles because it was shared-hosted. Assembly issues, etc. At the time, the cost and time sank my project. (The lack of direct access was also frustrating.) (to be fair to godaddy, this was over 3 years ago) I've been looking at Rackspace or Amazon as a possible cloud solution but it seems to be just processing power and bandwidth (and an OS). From what I understand, I'd need to get Apache and MySQL Working on my own. The way cloud hosting is priced, however, seems appealing. I figure my final option might be to use a virtual private host. I think this would be more flexible than a shared-host site but less scalable than a cloud based server. So, I guess my question is what is an appropriate solution for someone who intends to build a web application service? I figure that I need to establish a hosting environment now rather than later so I can plan to effectively use the environment. I'd prefer to be fairly economical to start out with. I really can't afford to pay $999 (or even $99) while I build up the site and get the core functionality online but at the same time, I'd like to have the selected environment grow as needed. I do not have the bootcamp manager on windows 7. The computer is not recognizing any held down keys when I try to either boot from cd or force macosx boot or anything. How can I get the computer to load up osx?

• Unable to access ubuntu through windows boot manager

  I am having an ASUS K55VM....it came with DOS....to this Windows 7 was installed...now i am planned to add another OS ie Ubuntu...my computer had 4 partitions of 240GB 230GB 230GB and 230GB....i changed this to 5 parts....243GB 230GB 230GB 150GB and an 80GB...i installed Ubuntu 12.04 to the 80GB partition through a USB flash drive....it installed fine...however the problem is during the Boot option in Windows Boot manager when i choose Ubuntu...this what is displayed... Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." 3.Click "Repair your computer." If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. File: \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr Status: 0xc000000e Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt. I tried to change the boot option for the OS and made Ubuntu as my first option....It worked...however windows 7 does not show up in GRUB....in this fear i did the following: Restarted my pc changed boot option 1 to windows. Formatted the drive to which Ubuntu was installed(80GB one)through windows. Restarted again. The problem persists....Windows boot manager shows Ubuntu still and when i choose this it gives two lines one like: grub rescue....but my windows 7 is working perfectly fine. Now want a solution to remove Ubuntu from the windows boot option and reinstall completely...

  I have a domain with Windows SBS 2003 as domain controller. It's very common to get Master Browser errors in the logs, MRxSmb Event ID 8003. How can I avoid that? What have I done wrong? I know how to solve this: Stop the Computer Browser service on clients, but I don't know how to avoid this since the problem comes back every time I add a new client and I forget to stop the Computer Browser service. Error message: The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer [computer] that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{#######-####-####-#. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced. Is there an configuration of the server to avoid this problem?
