  • Greenspun's 10th rule in Perl?

    - by DVK
Greenspun's Tenth Rule of Programming is a common aphorism in computer programming and especially programming language circles. It states: Any sufficiently complicated C or Fortran program contains an ad hoc, informally-specified, bug-ridden, slow implementation of half of Common Lisp. The questions are, 1) Would you consider this to be true of Perl interpreter? Only objective arguments please (e.g. which features of Common Lisp are implemented within the interpreter) 2) Independently, does there exist a Lisp (or at least a n ad hoc, informally-specified, bug-ridden, slow implementation of half of Common Lisp) implemented entirely in Perl?

  • How to start Android Kernel programming?

    - by Rajapandian
Hi All, I am 6 months experience in Android, use to develop simple UI based application. Now i want to write application targeting the Android core Kernel. For example i want to develop a Framework which is not present in Android. To achieve that we have to write the code for the Kernel. I dont know where and how to start the Android Kernel Programming. If anybody knows the way to start it please help me. Regards, Rajapandian.K

  • Join ACM, join IEEE, or read programming books?

    - by Laura
I read blogs and listen to podcasts, and I own many of the "classic" programming books. For the money, what kind of printed material would you say is the most valuable to keep current in software engineering -- books, or magazines from professional organizations such as ACM and IEEE? Which organization has the best periodicals?

  • Where can you find fun/educational programming challenges?

    - by tj9991
I've searched around for different challenge sites, and most of them seem to be geared towards difficulty in problem solving logically, rather than trying to use your language of choice to do something you haven't used it for. Their center is around mathematics rather than function design. Some kind of point system for correctly solving challenges, or solving them the most efficient/smallest would be neat as well. • Intro to GPU programming

    - by Adam Davis
Everyone has this huge massively parallelized supercomputer on their desktop in the form of a graphics card GPU. What is the "hello world" equivalent of the GPU community? What do I do, where do I go, to get started programming the GPU for the major GPU vendors? -Adam

  • How to find the right balance between "quick & dirty" and "nice & general" code?

    - by Frank
This is not a direct programming question, but a little help from the programming community would be appreciated. I am suffering from an overgeneralization disease. I can't stop spending valuable time with making my code most general and abstract. I could also call it the toolkit/library disease. I tend to turn every programming task into a general problem and try to "write a toolkit", that would work for many similar problems. I know it's a good thing in general, if there is enough time, but sometimes I should be writing a quick prototype and just can't seem to write the quick and dirty code that just works for the special case. I often get excited about an idea that makes the code more general and user-configurable and understimate the time it takes to actually implement it that way. Does anyone else have this experience? How can I force myself to find the right balance between "quick hack" and "nice solution"?

  • Teach Perl as a first language?

    - by yossale
I need to teach a non-programmer the basics of computer programming + some basic programming skills (- He's going to be in a position between the clients and the programmers , so the company requires him to learn the basic concepts of programming). I thought of Perl - You can teach it without getting into typing and pointers and it's syntax is very close to human (precious "bless" :) ) - but I'm a bit troubled because I feel like I'm going to "spoil" him for other languages in the future (C,C++,Java - What some people call "Real" languages) - exactly because of the reasons mentioned above. What do you think?

  • Getting javadoc for Google Wave robot programming in Eclipse

    - by Espenhh
Hey, Does anyone know how I can get the helpful Eclipse popups with javadoc when programming for the Google Wave Robots API? I have access to the JAR-file, the HTML Javadoc, as well as the source files from here How do I set up eclipse so I get javadoc integrated? I have tried adding the source files, but things just get "messy"

  • Applications for the Church Programming Language

    - by Chris S
Has anyone worked with the programming language Church? Can anyone recommend practical applications? I just discovered it, and while it sounds like it addresses some long-standing problems in AI and machine-learning, I'm sceptical. I had never heard of it, and was surprised to find it's actually been around for a few years, having been announced in the paper Church: a language for generative models.

  • wii programming

    - by harald
hello, my daughter just got a wii for christmas from her parents and her father has nothing better to do than looking for ways to dive into wii programming. i already read a lot about "homebrew" and wii. but i seem to be unable to find answers for the most important questions: do i have to modify the firmware to get the homebrew stuff to work? how likely is it, that the wii get's bricked, if for example there are any nintendo firmware updates? thanks very much!

  • Famous eponymous programming techniques

    - by Alicia
In some sports certain techniques or elements are named after the athlete who invented or first performed them—for example, Biellmann spin. Is their widespread use of such names for programming techniques and idioms? What are they? To be clear, I am explicitly not asking about algorithms, which are quite often named after their creators. For example, one is Schwartzian transform, but I can't recall any more.

  • What is a real world example of bad code or programming practice

    - by Luke101
I just want to know some bad programming practice or code I should avoid to make sure it does not exist in my code. I use c# asp.net but the example you give can be in any language since the idea is still the same. I have follow many suggestions on SO that really cleaned my code up. Now I looking to launch my application and want to make sure its ready for prime time.

  • Looking for fastest and least-programming-required path to implement a web site with user submitted

    - by Howiecamp
I'm looking to throw up a web site that supports user submitted entries and allows voting and comments. Similar in form and function to FMyLife. Basic requirements of site: Users can submit text entries - generally 1 liners Enters can be up or down voted Comments allowed - presentation collapseable Would like the fastest path possible. Ideal solution is configurable vs requirement for programming.

  • Practical Uses of Fractals in Programming

    - by Sami
Fractals have always been a bit of a mystery for me. What practical uses (beyond rendering to beautiful images) are there for fractals in the various programming problem domains? And please, don't just list areas that use them. I'm interested in specific algorithms and how fractals are used with those algorithms to solve something in practice. Please at least give a short description of the algorithm.

  • Erlang programming exercises

    - by valya
I'm learning Erlang. I've moved from Haskell so I don't want to and have to learn functional programming. But Erlang is quite specific because of the microprocesses. So, can you give me some examples which will be simple to test and measure and use all the power of Erlang?

Trying to learn more about Polyglot programming. What is it exactly and is it important? Look like it is cross platform coding and interoperability across platforms... I found this article by Ted Neward (Thoughtworks) interesting.

  • Signal processing or algorithmic programming for a PLC

    - by james singen smythe
I have an application that takes voltages and temperatures as analog inputs and does some processing using an algorithm which involves signal processing such as low-pass filtering, exponential smoothing, and other steps which might typically be done in a high-level programming language such as C or C++. I'm curious how I could perform these same steps using a PLC, and in particular, the Allen-Bradley Control-Logix system? It seems to me that the instruction set with ladder logic is too limited for this. Could I perform this using structured text?

  • F# Tacit Programming. Please help)

    - by Bubba88
It's not a practically important issue, but could you please provide me with an example of tacit programming in F# where my `pointless' functions can have multiple arguments (not in form of list or tuple); And secondly, where those functions can manipulate a complex data structure. I'm trying to manage it in FSharp interactive, but have no success yet. Huh.. I've managed to construct something: (fun _ - (fun _ - (+))) 333 222 111 555 Is that right way?
