  • Is it OK to put a standard, pure C header #include directive inside a namespace?

    I've got a project with a class log in the global namespace (::log). So, naturally, after #include <cmath>, the compiler gives an error message each time I try to instantiate an object of my log class, because <cmath> pollutes the global namespace with lots of three-letter methods, one of them being the logarithm function log(). So there are three possible solutions, each having their unique ugly side-effects. Move the log class to it's own namespace and always access it with it's fully qualified name. I really want to avoid this because the logger should be as convenient as possible to use. Write a mathwrapper.cpp file which is the only file in the project that includes <cmath>, and makes all the required <cmath> functions available through wrappers in a namespace math. I don't want to use this approach because I have to write a wrapper for every single required math function, and it would add additional call penalty (cancelled out partially by the -flto compiler flag) The solution I'm currently considering: Replace #include <cmath> by namespace math { #include "math.h" } and then calculating the logarithm function via math::log(). I have tried it out and it does, indeed, compile, link and run as expected. It does, however, have multiple downsides: It's (obviously) impossible to use <cmath>, because the <cmath> code accesses the functions by their fully qualified names, and it's deprecated to use in C++. I've got a really, really bad feeling about it, like I'm gonna get attacked and eaten alive by raptors. So my question is: Is there any recommendation/convention/etc that forbid putting include directives in namespaces? Could anything go wrong with diferent C standard library implementations (I use glibc), different compilers (I use g++ 4.7, -std=c++11), linking? Have you ever tried doing this? Are there any alternate ways to banish the math functions from the global namespace? I've found several similar questions on stackoverflow, but most were about including other C++ headers, which obviously is a bad idea, and those that weren't made contradictory statements about linking behaviour for C libraries. Also, would it be beneficial to additionally put the #include <math.h> inside extern "C" {}?

    Many utilities of boost have been included as part of extended C++ TR1 currently. Is the complete boost library going to be included once the standard is officially out ? In other words, do I need boost library, if I have complete standard conforming C++11 compiler ? If not then any reason for that (Reliability cannot be an issue; as far as I know it's written by many people from standard committee) ?

    Is there a way to read a large text file (~60MB) into memory at once (like a compiler flag to increase program memory limit) ? Currently, ofstream's open function throws a segmentation fault while trying to read this file. ifstream fis; fis.open("my_large_file.txt"); // Segfaults here The file just consists of rows of the form number_1<tabspace>number_2 i.e., two numbers separated by a tabspace.

  • Make sure bad patterns don't come back after refactoring

    I'm refactoring an old C code. The code has absolutely no layered architecture (everything is being accessed by everything) and I'm trying to change that. I would like to cut direct access to structure members (at least write for now) and only allow access through access functions. Is there some tool (or perhaps directly the compiler) that could check this rule for me? I need this since I'm maintaining a fork and the upstream isn't very concerned with code quality.

  • Why am I getting ClassNotFoundExpection when I have properly imported said class and am looking at it in its directory?

    This is my Javac compiling statement: javac -cp "C:\java\code\j3D\j3dcore.jar;C:\java\code\j3D\j3dutils.jar;C:\java\code\j3D\vecmath.jar" Simple.java compiles with no problems.     As far as I know there is no web browser with built in validators for HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Developing web pages without validation is like using a compiler that doesn't do syntax analysis. Even Firefox with its excellent plugins aimed at developers like Firebug lacks plugins for CSS and JavaScript validation. Wouldn't it be useful to have these plugins? Am I missing something?

    CodeBlocks is not linking extension SDL Libraries like SDL_mixer and SDL_image? I followed Lazy Foo's tutorial for SDL 1.2 but I am compiling my program in SDL 2.0. The compiler is showing an error with the linking of the libraries though without the mixer library it is working. How does 8, 2.4, and 'a' get memory, moved into that memory, and passed into the function? What type of optimizations does the compiler have for situations like these? What if I mix and match parameters, such like someFunc(myIntVar, 2.4, someChar);? What happens if the function is declared as inline?

  • C# empty statement

    In C#, I can write something like: using (new MyDisposableClass().MethodA()); The semicolon causes a compiler warning to be shown which states possible mistaken empty statement. I haven't run the above code but won't the method still be called? What uses is there of this type of coding convention?   • Overinclusion of libraries C++

    I'm reading about how to put a makefile together, but no-one seems to mention what to do if your files require different sets of libraries, they all seem to use the same set of libraries for each file. Since it seems unlikely that every single file has the same libraries, I take it the list they use must amalgamate all of the libraries required across the project. I just wanted to know if there's any downside to including too many libraries, or if the compiler works out which ones are needed and ignores the rest? Thanks

    base class: Class List(Of T) Function Contains(ByVal value As T) As Boolean derived class: Class Bar : List(Of Exception) ' Exception type as example ' Function Contains(Of U)(ByVal value As U) As Boolean compiler tells me that that two are the same, so I need to declare Overloads/new this second function. But I want use U to differentiate the type (one logic) like NullReferenceException, ArgumentNull Exception, etc. but want to leave the base function(no differentiation by type - other logic) as well.
