Focussing on Style Sheets and Cross Browser Compatibility.

Hello everyone, Let me begin this topic by explaining my background experience with web design. I have always been more of a back end programmer, with PHP and SQL and things. However I do have a shallow background with HTML and CSS. The problem is, I don't know it all. What I do know is, when it comes to designing (not back end dirty work) I understand basic CSS properties and I also understand HTML and I can usually throw together a sloppy web page with the two and a couple bazillion DIV tags. Anyways.. The problem I always have encountered is that when I design a website in a browser such as IE7 (and then it looks perfect on IE7), and then look at it on IE8 or IE6 or Mozilla (etc.) it gets all spacey and ugly and looks totally different than the way it should look on IE7. Question one: Basically, what I am asking everyone is what route should I take to learn how to properly build the website? Build as in put it togehter with CSS standards and HTML standards that will make my site look the same on every brwoser. (Not only learning standards but where can I learn to properly write my code?) Where is a strong free resource I can use to learn how to these things? Question two: How do I properly code my website? Do I use all external style sheets to make dynamic page design simplistic or do I hard code some things into the DIV tags on each page? What is proper? Oh, and if anyone has any tutorials on how to properly design a complete layout feel free to throw it in a response somewhere. Thank you for taking the time to read my questions, and hopefully you will understand what I am trying to get out to everyone. make my file readable as either Perl or HTML

In the spirit of the "Perl Preamble" where a script works properly whether executed by a shell script interpreter or the Perl interpreter... I have a Perl script which contains an embedded HTML document (as a "heredoc"), i.e.: #!/usr/bin/perl ... some perl code ... my $html = <<'END' ; <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> ... more HTML ... </html> END ... perl code that processes $html ... I would like to be able to work on the HTML that's inside the Perl script and check it out using a web browser, and only run the script when the HTML is the way I want. To accomplish this, I need the file to be openable both as an HTML file and as a Perl script. I have tried various tricks with Perl comments and HTML comments but can't get it quite perfect. It doesn't have to be "strictly legal" HTML... just displayable in a browser with no (or minimal) Perl garbage visible.

Does Google Maps API v3 allow larger zoom values ?

If you use the satellite GMapType using this Google-provided example in v3 of the API, the maximum zoom level has a scale of 2m / 10ft , whereas using the v2 version of another Google-provided example (had to use another one since the control-simple doesn't have the scale control) yields the maximum scale of 20m / 50ft. Is this a new "feature" of v3 ? I have to mention that I've tested the examples in the same GLatLng regions - so my guess is that tile detail level doesn't influence it, am I mistaken ? As mentioned in another question, v3 is to be considered of very Labs-y/beta quality, so use in production should be discouraged for the time being. I've been drawn to the subject since I have to "increase the zoom level of a GMap", the answers here seem to suggest using GTileLayer, and I'm considering GMapCreator, although this will involve some effort. What I'm trying to achieve is to have a larger zoom level, a scale of 2m / 10ft would be perfect, I have a map where the tiles aren't that hi-res and quite a few markers. Seeing that the area doesn't have hi-res tiles, the distance between the markers is really tiny, creating some problematic overlapping. Or better yet, how can you create a custom Map which allows higher zoom levels, as by the Google Campus, where the 2m / 10ft scale is achieved, and not use your own tileserver ? I've seen an example on a fellow Stackoverflower's GMaps sandbox , where the tiles are manually created based on the zoom level. I don't think I'm making any more sense, so I'm just going to end this big question here, I've been wondering around trying to find a solution for hours now. Hope that someone comes to my aid though ! Thank you in advance !

Spring Security HTTP Basic Authentication

Hi people! I am trying to do a really simple basic authentication with Spring Security. I have configured properly the namespace, and there are no Exceptions in the server. Building Cross Platform app - recommendation

Hi, I need to build a fairly simple app but it needs to work on both PC and Mac. It also needs to be redistributable on a disc or usb drive as a standalone desktop app. Initially I thought AIR would be perfect for this (it ticks all the API requirements), but the difficulty is making it distributable, as the app would require the AIR runtime to be installed to run. I came across Shu Player as an option as it seems to be able to package the AIR runtime with the app and do a (silent?) install. However this seems to break the T&C from Adobe (as outlined here) so I'm not sure about the legality. Another option could be Zinc but I haven't tested it so I'm not sure how well it'll fit the bill. What would you recommend or suggest I check out? Any suggestion much appreciated EDIT: There's a few more discussions on mono usage (though no real conclusion): Here and Here EDIT2: Titanium could also fit the bill maybe, will check it out. Algorithm to get through a maze

Hello, We are currently programming a game (its a pretty unknown language: modula 2), And the problem we encountered is the following: we have a maze (not a perfect maze) in a 17 x 12 grid. The computer has to generate a way from the starting point (9, 12) to the end point (9, 1). I found some algorithms but they dont work when the robot has to go back: xxxxx x => x x xxx or: xxxxx x xxxxxx x x x x x xxxxxx x => x xxxxxxxxx I found a solution for the first example type but then the second type couldn't be solved and the solution I made up for the second type would cause the robot to get stuck in the first type of situation. It's a lot of code so i'll give the idea: WHILE (end destination not reached) DO { try to go right, if nothing blocks you: go right if you encounter a block, try up until you can go right, if you cant go up anymore try going down until you can go right, (starting from the place you first were blocked), if you cant go down anymore, try one step left and fill the spaces you tested with blocks. } This works for the first type of problem ... not for the second one. Now it could be that i started wrong so i am open for better algorithms or solutions specificaly to how i could improve my algorithm. Thanks a lot!!

TypeConverter prevents ApplyPropertyChanges in EntityFramework

I ran into an interesting problem (hopefully, interesting not just for me :) I am running Entity Framework 1 (.NET 3.5) and ASP.NET MVC 2. I have a Customer class that has many-to-one relationship with Country class (in other words, Country is a lookup table for customers - I described more in this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2404801/explicit-casting-doesnt-work-in-default-model-binding ) I got TypeConverter to work; so I am getting a perfect object into controller's Post method. Create works fine; however, in Edit I am getting the following error when I call ApplyPropertyChanges: The existing object in the ObjectContext is in the Added state. Changes can only be applied when the existing object is in an unchanged or modified state. The controller code is fairly trivial: public ActionResult Edit(Customer customerToEdit) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { Customer cust = (Customer)context.GetObjectByKey( new EntityKey("BAEntities.Customers", "CustomerID", customerToEdit.CustomerID)); context.ApplyPropertyChanges(cust.EntityKey.EntitySetName, customerToEdit); context.SaveChanges(); } return View(...); } If I remove country from the form, it works fine; and if I assign dropdown value to EntityReference "manually" - it works as well. UpdatePanel not working in IE or Chrome

I have an updatepanel on my masterpage. Within the contentplace holder I have my update progress control. When a user clicks on the button I load some data into a gridview. This works perfectly in FireFox. User clicks the button, the loading image in my updateprogress fires and loads the gridview. When I test this in IE 6 or 7 or in Chrome. It does a full postback and the updateprogress is never shown. So the updatepanel doesnt seem to be working in these two browsers. Code is below. problem with addressfilter in WCF

I've build my own WCF channel with all necessary stuff (like encoders, bindings, etc) to use it with ServiceHost. I just want to build the "channel stack" making no custumizations at "Service Model". To acomplish this, my encoder returns perfect ServiceModel.Messages with a XML infoset just like other channel does. Lets assume the following service implementation: [ServiceContract(Namespace = "http://MyNS")] public interface IService1 { [OperationContract(IsOneWay = true)] void dummy(); } public class Service1 : IService1 { public void dummy() { Console.WriteLine("In Service1:dummy()"); } } I used this service through other bindings and traced the following ServiceModel.Message contents (SOAP format): <s:Envelope xmlns:s="http://www.w3.org/2003/05/soap-envelope" xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/2005/08/addressing"> <s:Header> <a:Action s:mustUnderstand="1">http://MyNS/IService1/dummy</a:Action> <a:To s:mustUnderstand="1">amqp://localhost</a:To> </s:Header> <s:Body> <dummy xmlns="http://MyNS"></dummy> </s:Body> </s:Envelope> Then (just to debug) i changed my encoder to allways return this message. When i use my custom channel the WCF's runtime replay with an faul message telling: "The message with To '' cannot be processed at the receiver, due to an AddressFilter mismatch at the EndpointDispatcher. Check that the sender and receiver's EndpointAddresses agree." I read that the default EndPointDispatcher.AddressFilter simply looks to the "TO" header and delivery the message to corresponding service. This is happening with other bindings, why not happens with my custom channel too? Is there any way to i check what default AddressFilter is doing? Thanks

Best Youtube embed player sizes?

I use tumblr to share videos and, unfortunately, when re-posting a video to your tumblelog it uses the embed code at 400x336px. This is neither widescreen nor very large. So I'm trying to set the player to better size and I'm finding that the youtube player really comes in many sizes. For example, when copying the embed code for and HD video I get the sizes 560x340, 640x385, and 853x505. Then when I look at the embed code for a SD video I get the sizes 425x344, 480x385, and 640x505. I was having the best luck with setting the player to 640 x 505 as it was large enough for HD and perfect for SD. print str_replace( array('400', '336'), array('640', '505'), $video_player_html); Has anyone dealt with trying to find a good standard embed size for a site? One thing that would make this a lot easier is to know whether the video was HD or not - however, that info is not provided in the embed code. I guess I am actually more interested in knowing the right ratio (or specific size) to use that works the best for youtube's mixed content.

How to get PHP command line to work with PDO?

I want to work with PDO, through PHP command line. It works perfect through the PHP web API, but not through the command line. But when I execute the command: php test.php, it says unknown class PDO. I think it has something to do with the thread-safety difference. Loop through all cells in Xceed DataGrid for WPF?

I am changing the background color of the cells when the user has made an edit. I would like to return all cells to normal colors when the changes are saved (or reverted). It's easy enough to set the cell's original background color (as stored in the parent row). But I can't figure out how to loop through all the cells in the table to reset them. I found an article in the Xceed Knowledge Base called "How to iterate through the grid's rows"... which you would think would be perfect, right? Wrong; the properties (or methods) like .DataRows, .FixedHeaderRows, etc. mentioned in the article are from an older/defunct Xceed product. This forum thread recommends using the DataGrid's .Items property, which in my case returns a collection of System.Data.DataRowViews... but I can't find any way to cast that (or any of its related elements) up to the Xceed.Wpf.DataGrid.DataCells I need to change the background color. In short, how do I loop through the rows and cells so I can reset the background property?

Thread resource sharing

I'm struggling with multi-threaded programming... I have an application that talks to an external device via a CAN to USB module. I've got the application talking on the CAN bus just fine, but there is a requirement for the application to transmit a "heartbeat" message every second. This sounds like a perfect time to use threads, so I created a thread that wakes up every second and sends the heartbeat. The problem I'm having is sharing the CAN bus interface. The heartbeat must only be sent when the bus is idle. How do I share the resource? Here is pseudo code showing what I have so far: TMainThread { Init: CanBusApi =new TCanBusApi; MutexMain =CreateMutex( "CanBusApiMutexName" ); HeartbeatThread =new THeartbeatThread( CanBusApi ); Execution: WaitForSingleObject( MutexMain ); CanBusApi->DoSomething(); ReleaseMutex( MutexMain ); } THeartbeatThread( CanBusApi ) { Init: MutexHeart =CreateMutex( "CanBusApiMutexName" ); Execution: Sleep( 1000 ); WaitForSingleObject( MutexHeart ); CanBusApi->DoHeartBeat(); ReleaseMutex( MutexHeart ); } The problem I'm seeing is that when DoHeartBeat is called, it causes the main thread to block while waiting for MutexMain as expected, but DoHeartBeat also stops. DoHeartBeat doesn't complete until after WaitForSingleObject(MutexMain) times out in failure. Does DoHeartBeat execute in the context of the MainThread or HeartBeatThread? It seems to be executing in MainThread. What am I doing wrong? Is there a better way? Thanks, David

Problem with creation of scheduled task from IIS6 on SR2003

Hi, I am writing a webapplication using .NET. The webapp creates scheduled tasks using the System.Diagnostics.Process class, calling SCHTASKS.EXE with parameters. I have changed the identity on the app pool, to a specific domain user. The domain-user is local administrator on all the four webservers. From webserver01 I am creating tasks on webserver01 to webserver04. It works perfect for 3-5 days, but then it breaks. It gives me the following errormessage in a messagebox: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application." If I have the system in the broken state, and I change the identity of the app pool to Domain administrator, it works. As I change it back to my domain-user, it breaks again. If I reboot the server, it works again for the same amount of days, but will break again. It seems like a permission-related problem. I just don't understand why it works sometimes, and sometimes doesn't. I hope someone outthere has seen this problem! Looking forward to hear from you! Kind regards, Morten, Denmark

Desktop Notifications, aka Internal Alert System

It has become apparent that where I work needs, internally, a "notification system". The issue being that we are very spread out throughout multiple buildings and the bulk of the work force regularly keeps there email closed for hours at a time. I need to create a simple way to be able to push out a message and have it "pop up" on everyones computer(or a single computer). My first thought was to write a windows service that calls a winform/wpf app that resides on each computer that simply pops up with the message. Not sure how viable an idea that is but this is just brain-storming. A different route, I thought, could be an app that resides in the systray on each computer that polls a db table and using the Query Notifications could pop up a message each time a new row is added. Then simply create an insanely basic app for writing a row to that table. So, what I am asking is if any one else has walked this path. If so, how? What things did you take into consideration? Are either of my ideas valid starting points or are "egg and my face in perfect alignment"? Is there a different way that is even simpler? Thanks

Make Iframe to fit 100% of container's remaining height

I want to design a web page with a banner and a iframe. I hope the iframe can fill all the remaining page height and be resized automatically as browser resizing. Is it possible to get it done without writing Javascript code, only with CSS? I tried set height:100% on iframe, the result is quite close but the iframe tried to fill the whole page height, including the 30px height of banner div element, so I got unneccessary vertical scrollbar. It's not perfect. Update Notes: Excute me for not describing the question well, I tried CSS margin, padding attribute on DIV to occupy the whole remining height of a web page successfully, but the trick didn't work on iframe. <body> <div style="width:100%; height:30px; background-color:#cccccc;">Banner</div> <iframe src="http: //www.google.com.tw" style="width:100%; height:100%;"></iframe> </body> Any idea is appreciated.

Is background tasks the solution for this problem?

Hi. I need to develop an enterprise app that monitors the network traffic. Basically it detects if the user is in wi-fi or cellular data and save the amount of bytes was sent and received in a period of time. I saw an App at the AppStore that do exactly this job. Detecting wi-fi or cellular data is quite simple using the Reachability Sample provided by Apple. My problem is to keep monitoring the bytes sent and received while the app is in background. As it is an enterprise App, I used UIBackgroundModes "voip" to avoid the app to be terminated. I also installed the setKeepAliveTimeout method and I'm able to see the logs each 10 minutes, BUT only for 10 seconds after the method runs. I mean, setKeepAliveTimeout brings my App to run a Timer for 10 seconds each 1o minutes. I'm thinking wether or not a task in background is the best solution for my problem. I'll appreciate any comments. EDIT: Ok guys. Thats the perfect way to do it. First of all you must read this: http://www.christian-fries.de/blog/files/tag-ios.html I tried this and it works really fine. All we need to do is to create a second thread detached from the main one. This way we have a continuos threading running forever. You must see the GCD docs at Apple's website also. Second thing you should consider for an enterprise App is to set it up as a voip App, this way iOS will put your App running even after a reboot. It's a special behavior iOS has to keep voip Apps running. Thats it guys. I hope it can help you.

Using inotify-tools and ruby to push uploads to Cloud Files

Hi Guys, I wrote a few scripts to monitor an uploads directory for changes, then capture the file uploaded/changed and push it to cloud files using a ruby script. This all works well 95% of the time, the only exception is that occasionally, ruby fails with a 'file does not exist' exception. I am assuming that the ruby 'push' script is being called before the file is 100% in its new location, so the script is being called a little prematurely. I tried adding a little function to my script to check if the file exists, if it doesn't, sleep 5 then try again, but this seems to snowball and eventually dies. How to fetch distinct values in Core Data?

So in looking through Core Data Snippets, I found the following code: ... This isn't defined or used anywhere NSArray *objects = [managedObjectContext executeFetchRequest:request error:&error]; if (objects == nil) { // handle the error } This is great and seems perfect for what I need...but how does one actually use it? I assume since it's returning dictionaries, I need a key to get at the values - but where's the key defined? Is that the "id requestedValue = nil" line? If so, how does "requestedValue" become the key? Xcode gives me a compiler warning about an unused variable at the "requestedValue" declaration. I feel like I'm missing something here. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

Best full text search for mysql?

We're currently running MySQL on a LAMP stack and have been looking at implementing a more thorough, full-text search on our site. We've looked at MySQL's own freetext search, but it doesn't seem to cope well with large databases, which makes it far too slow for our needs. Our main requirements are: speed returning results simple updating of index In addition to the above, our "nice to have"s are: ideally not something that requires adding a module to MySQL plays nicely with PHP (majority of our dev work done using PHP) There seems to be quite a few healthy open-source projects to add fast, reliable full-text search to MySQL, so I'm basically looking for recommendations/suggestions on what you've found to be the most useful product out there, easiest to set up, etc. So far, the list of ones we've been starting to play around with are: Sphinx, C++ based, used by craigslist, thepiratebay Lucene, Java-based Apache project, powers zeoh.com and zoomf.com Solr, Java-based offshoot of Lucene, used to power searches on Digg, CNet & AOL Channels Are there any better ones out there that we haven't come across yet? Can you recommend / suggest against any of the options we've gathered so far? Thanks for your help! Update @Cletus suggested Google's Custom Search Engine. We recently trialled this on a couple of projects, and it's an almost-perfect fit for our needs. The problem is that entries on our site are updated quite regularly, and unfortunately the speed at which entries go in/get updated in Google's index was just too slow and erratic for us to rely on, even with the addition of sitemaps and requested crawl rate changes.

PHP, MySQL Per row output

Been all over the place and spent 8 hours working loops and math...still cant get it... I am writing a CP for a customer. The input form will allow them to add a package deal to their web page. Each package deal is stored in mysql in the following format id header item1 item2 item3...item12 price savings The output is a table with 'header' being the name of the package and each item being 1 of the items in the package stored in a row within the table, then the price and amount saved (all of this is input via a form and INSERT statement by the customer, that part works) stored rows as well. Here is my PHP: include 'dbconnect.php'; $query = "SELECT * FROM md "; $result = mysql_query($query); while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { //Print 4 tables with header, items, price, savings //Go to next row (on main page) and print 4 more items //Do this until all tables have been printed } mysql_free_result($result); mysql_close($conn); ? Right now the main page is simpley a header div, main div, content wrap and footer div. Ideal HTML output of a 'package' table, not perfect and a little confusing $header $item1 $item2 ect... $price$savings I basically want the PHP to print this 4 times per row on the main page and then move to the next row and print 4 times and continue until there are no more items in the array. So it could be row 1 4 tables, row 2 4 tables, row 3 3 tables. Long, confusing and frustrating. I about to just do 1 item per row..please help Jake

Use Java exceptions internally for REST API user errors?

We have a REST API that works great. We're refactoring and deciding how to internally handle errors by the users of our API. For example the user needs to specify the "movie" url parameter which should take the value of "1984", "Crash", or "Avatar". First we check to see if it has a valid value. What would be the best approach if the movie parameter is invalid? return null from one of the internal methods and check for the null in the main API call method throw an exception from the internal method and catch exceptions in the main API method I think it would make our code more readable and elegant to use exceptions. However, we're reluctant because we'd be potentially throwing many exceptions because of user API input errors, our code could be perfect. This doesn't seem to be the proper use of exceptions. If there are heavy performance penalties with exceptions, which would make sense with stack traces needing to be collected, etc., then we're unnecessarily spending resources when all we need to do is tell the user the parameter is wrong. These are REST API methods, so we're not propogating the exceptions to the users of the API, nor would we want to even if possible. So what's the best practice here? Use ugly nulls or use java's exception mechanism?

AVAudioPlayer making noise when playing multiple sounds at the same time

I am having an issue where AVAudioPlayer is introducing noise into playback ONLY when I play multiple sound files at the same time. If I play them each individually, they all sound perfect. But, if I play sound clip B while sound clip A is still playing, the speakers start crackling like there is noise. I have tried both m4a files AND caf files and both make the same noise, so it has to be something with how I am implementing this method or a quirk with AVAudioPlayer.
