• Help! Online upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04 stuck

  I was trying to upgrade my Lenovo T500 laptop from Kubuntu 12.04 LTS to Kubuntu 14.04 LTS. Fired up the upgrade process, and finally after downloading a zillion packages the upgrade got going, only to get stuck... It has been stuck for hours on: Installing the upgrades->Unpacking subversion Last lines of error messages: GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.32.4/./gobject/gtype.c:2722: You forgot to call g_type_init() at /usr/lib/perl/5.18/DynaLoader.pm line 207. GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `result != 0' failed at /usr/lib/perl/5.18/DynaLoader.pm line 207. I don't care much about subversion anymore, I use git now; I don't care if subversion ends up in a bad state and I have to remove it... I just want the upgrade to continue, and hopefully complete. • Fails to boot after upgrade, stuck on winbind package

  I started the upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 last night. Once it got the installing packages part I left the computer unattended the rest of the night. When I checked it this morning the screen was blank and I couldn't get it to turn on. So I cycled power, and now I get the "Ubuntu 11.10" screen with the dots underneath, but then it gets to a blank screen and nothing more. I can get to the command line in recovery mode; here's a list of the things I've tried so far sudo apt-get update - the very first repository it checked sat at 0% for a long time (network cable is plugged in), so I cancelled with Ctrl+C Thought it might be a problem with display drivers, so I tried sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx - this gave me an error saying dpkg has been interrupted, manually run sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo dpkg --configure -a this installed / updated a bunch of stuff but got stuck at Starting Winbind daemon winbind Restarted and tried sudo dpkg --configure -a again but it gets stuck at same Windbind step What else can I do to fix this problem?

• Stuck while Booting Text Mode in Ubuntu 12.04?

  I edited the /etc/default/grub file and changed: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash” to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”text” This does make Ubuntu boot up into text mode; however, it gets stuck while booting up and it does not show me the login text. Instead it says something like this: Begin running /scripts/init-bottom USB hub found ...More irrelevant things... *Stopping LightDM Display Manager I can press Ctrl + Alt + F2 and see the login and boot up like normal, but is there any reason for this? How can I change it so it does not get get stuck? Edit: After 5 minutes, a new line came up: 557.1206341 ieee80211 phy0: channel change: 5540 -> 5560 failed (3).

  OS: Windows XP SP3 Hardware: Dell Precision M4400 (Laptop) CPU: Core2Duo T9600 Mem: 4 GB Installer- setup, first start and account- setup of UbuntuONE Windows client passed with no problems. After restart of UbuntuONE, the CPU- usage shows 50% (100% core usage). Exit- command (from context-menu) hides the trayicon, but the program is still working excessive in background (50% cpu- / 50 MB memory- usage), until UbuntuOneClient.exe is killed by the taskmanager. What's going on ?

• Unbuntu stuck at boot after update

  Well, I installed Ubuntu 11.10 via Wubi on my MSI U270. Everything was running fine, I even got fglrx working after I manually downloaded a .run and executed it. Then I thought of running the complete updates that were on the update manager. I did run it, it took a whole night to complete, I waited a bit as the part came where I had to click on "Restart now". I clicked it, after that I'm stuck at the purple screen with all dots lighted orange. I've been waiting for it to start up for more than half an hour, and there used to be occasional HDD blinks which isn't happening now. Should I reboot? Edit: After the restart not while restarting, forgot to mention that and by the way, is there a way to see anything that's happening just so I know that it ain't stuck?

• Ubuntu One Music - 'Unable to Parse '2006-12-12T08:00:00Z' as integer (iTunes Non-DRM AAC)

  Good Morning; Title says most of it, uploaded a new song to my U1 Music (via my Android using the Files app). Which is an recently purchased iTunes .m4a song, so is non-DRM AAC. Uploaded fine, and browsing in U1 Music I see artist "Spray" fine, and then the Album, but attempting to open the Album to the song, returns: "'Unable to Parse '2006-12-12T08:00:00Z' as integer" Not sure if it's a problem with the file itself, or just how Android uploaded the file, as that is clearly a weird date code. All my other music is fine, no errors, and the service works awesome. My U1 account is under the e-mail address used for this question. Thanks!

  I have a city "map" (for example - Moscow). She in accuracy repeats the contours the given city in google maps (that is it is copied from google maps and it is a little processed, but the sense remained the same). Also I have object co-ordinates in a city (in co-ordinates of google). Problem: how to translate google co-ordinates to the co-ordinates of my picture (that is in pixels on OX and OY on a picture). That is I receive google-co-ordinates and it is necessary for me to draw this point on my picture. I know that on small scales (for example on city scales) it to make simply enough (it is necessary to learn what google-co-ordinates has one of picture corners, then to learn "price" of one pixel in google-co-ordinates on a picture on axes OX and OY separately). But on the big scales (country scale) "price" of one pixel will be not a constant, and will vary strongly enough and the method described above cannot be applied. How to solve a problem on country scales?

• My simple program runs on Android emulator, but not on my Nexus One

  To clarify, I have no trouble getting the Nexus One connected in developer's mode. I can actually get Eclipse to "run" my program on my Nexus One. However, my Nexus One simply gets stuck in a reboot loop. I've also created an .apk file and put it onto my Nexus One, installing it with apkInstaller. However, it crashed while installing. I see my app on my phone, but I'm kind of afraid to run it. I am not doing anything fancy in my program; all it does is generate text by shuffling a couple arrays of strings together. It uses a bunch of text views, two buttons, and a spinner. I have only edited the main source file, the strings XML file, and the layout XML file, nothing else. It's a 2.1-update1 program and it runs fine on the emulator. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I'm using Windows 7 (32 bit) and my Nexus One is running Cyanogen 5.0.7.1. I'm pretty sure it's my code that's causing the problem. Now I'm just wondering if there are any common mistakes that would lead my app to run on the emulator but not on my device. Now the only problem I've got is N+1 select queries when doing a simple loading. • One host on a network can't connect to one other host

  I'm on a local network with a few other people. On of the hosts is a virtual machine running in virtualbox on a mac, which has the ip address 192.168.0.35 (the VM that is, not the mac host). Everyone except one guy can connect (ie ping, ssh etc) to that machine. When that one guy tries to ping it he gets Request timeout for icmp_seq 0 Request timeout for icmp_seq 1 Request timeout for icmp_seq 2 which i understand is just how certain mac os's report an unreachable connection. He can ping all the other hosts on the network, ie our computers, and we can all ping the VM fine and connect to it with no problems etc. His ip is 192.168.0.17. I ssh'd onto his machine (as a new user 'anon') and saw the same problems. I can ssh onto the 192.168.0.35 VM as well. From there, i can ping other users, but when i ping the problem guy, it's unreachable that way round as well. He restarted his mac, and was fine for a while. Then, just stopped working again. He's got a different IP to before. Any ideas, anyone? Don't know enough about this stuff to even diagnose the problem. thanks, max

• Linux software raid fails to include one device for one RAID1 array

  One of my four Linux software raid arrays drops one of its two devices when I reboot my system. The other three arrays work fine. I am running RAID1 on kernel version 2.6.32-5-amd64. Every time I reboot, /dev/md2 comes up with only one device. I can manually add the device by saying $ sudo mdadm /dev/md2 --add /dev/sdc1. • How could I safely fix my walking "dead pixel" bug?

• Best approach to depth streaming via existing codec

  I'm working on a development system (and game) intended for games set mostly in static third-person views. We produce our scenery by CG and photographic techniques. Our background art is rendered off-line by a production-grade renderer. To allow the runtime imagery to properly interact with the background art, I wrote a program to convert from depth output by Mental Ray into a texture, and a pixel shader to draw a quad such that the Z data comes from the texture. This technique is working out very well, but now we've decided that some of the camera angle changes between scenes should be animated. The animation itself is straightforward to produce from our CG models. We intend to encode it to some HD video codec such as H.264. The problem is that in order to maintain our runtime imagery on the screen, the depth buffer will need to be loaded for each video frame. Due to the bandwidth, the video's depth data will need to be compressed efficiently. I've looked into methods for performing temporal compression of depth info and found an interesting research paper here: http://web4.cs.ucl.ac.uk/staff/j.kautz/publications/depth-streaming.pdf The method establishes a mapping between 16-bit depth values and YCbCr values. The mapping is tuned to the properties of existing video codecs in order to maximize precision of the decoded depths after the YCbCr has undergone video compression. It allows an existing, unmodified video codec to be used on the backend. I'm looking at how to pull this off with the least possible work. (This design change was unplanned.) Our game engine itself is native C++, presently for Win32 and DirectX, although we've worked hard to keep platform dependence segregated because we intend other ports. We don't have motion video facilities in the engine yet but will ultimately need that anyway for cinematics. I was planning on using some off-the-shelf motion video solution we can plug into our engine, and haven't chosen one yet. This new added requirement makes selecting one harder since, among other things, we'll now need to bypass colourspace conversion on one of the streams, and also will need to be playing two streams simultaneously in lockstep, on top of in some cases audio on one of them (for the cinematics). I'm also wondering if it's possible (or even useful) to do the conversion from YCbCr to depth in a pixel shader, or if it's better to just do it in CPU and separately load the resulting depth values into a locked tex. The conversion unfortunately does involve branching logic per-pixel. (There are more naive mappings that don't need branching, but they produce inferior results.) It could be reduced to a table lookup but the table would be 32MB. Programming is second-nature to me but I'm not that experienced with pix shaders and have zero knowledge of off-the-shelf video solutions. I'd therefore be interested in advice from others who may have dealt more with depth streaming, pixel shaders, and/or off-the-shelf codecs, regarding how feasible the proposed application is and what off-the-shelf video systems out there would best get along with this usage case.

  I have one two divs and two seperate links that triggers slideDown and slideUp for the divs. When one of the divs are slided down and I click the other one, I hide the first div (slidingUp) and then open the other div (slidingDown) but, at the moment its like while one div is sliding down, the other, also in the same time, is sliding up. is there a way that would tell jquery to wait to finish sliding down of one div and only then start sliding up the other ?

Here is a brief screenshot of the structure: http://cl.ly/1AEU Everything works well, but mysteriously when I use the OneToOne associations I have accessors like: var db = new DB(); var account = db.Accounts.First(); var company = account.Companies; // note the plural not the singular accessor So, what's happing is that even if using OneToOne association, I still get the plural accessor with "companies" and not "company", if it this is a pure object representation and not an EntitySet generated in case when it s an oneToMany relationship. Is there a way to get this nomenclature to be applied properly? Thanks a lot

  Hi guys, is there a simple way to persist some of the fields in another class and table using hibernate. For example, I have a Person class with name, surname, email, address1, address2, city, country fields. What is the best way to achieve this? Edit: I am using annotations. It does not have to be the way I described, I am looking for best practices. PS.   Hello, My client has one machine with Windows 2008 R2 and everything on it. By everything I mean AD, DNS, SharePoint 2010 Standard, Exchange 2010 Standard, Terminal Services, Office 2010 and a bunch of additional apps. Everything stands on I7 x 2 and 36gb ram for 7 people total. I've decided that we should virtualize it and split things into 4 VM's and keep host only with Hyper-V installed to host all the machines. What problems should I expect? What good advices can you give. My plan is that when i move everything to VM's i will move vm's to safe place and format the host as it has a lot of really bad things happening on it. But this also means that everything will be wiped from current solution so I have to be sure that Exchange etc will work when host gets wiped. MadBoy

• Redirect one input from one terminal to another

  I have sshed into a linux box and I'm using dvtm and bash (although I have also tried this with Gnu screen and bash). I have two terminals, current /dev/pts/29 and /dev/pts/130. I want to redirect the input from one to the other. From what I understand, in /dev/pts/130 I can type: cat </dev/pts/29 And then when I type in /dev/pts/29 the characters I type should show up in /dev/pts/130. However what ends up happening is that every other character I type gets redirected. For example, if I type "hello" I get this: /dev/pts/29 | /dev/pts/130 $ | $ cat </dev/pts/29 $ el | hlo This is really frustrating as I need to do this in order to redirect the io of a process running in gdb (I've tried both run /dev/pts/# and set inferior-tty /dev/pts/# and both resulted in the aforementioned behavior). Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug in bash/screen/dvtm?

Update After following instructions in the answer by @lpanebr, it is now stuck at the linux-firmware package. So, maybe it's a more general problem than being related to specific package(s)? Although it did download some packages without problems before getting stuck at linux-firmware.

• One to many too much data returned - MySQL

  I have 2 related MySQL tables in a one to many relationship. Customers: cust_id, cust_name, cust_notes Orders: order_id, cust_id, order_comments So, if I do a standard join to get all customers and their orders via PHP, I return something like: Jack Black, jack's notes, comments about jack's 1st order Jack Black, jack's notes, comments about jack's 2nd order Simon Smith, simon's notes, comments about simon's 1st order Simon Smith, simon's notes, comments about simon's 2nd order The problem is that *cust_notes* is a text field and can be quite large (a couple of thousand words). So, it seems like returning that field for every order is inneficient. I could use *GROUP_CONCAT* and JOINS to return all *order_comments* on a single row BUT order_comments is a large text field too, so it seems like that could create a problem. Should I just use two separate queries, one for the customers table and one for the orders table? Is there a better way?
