• Crowdsourcing MVVM Light Toolkit support

• Charging by the hour/project

  This is related to a question I asked earlier - How to end a relationship with a client without pissing them off? What are your obligations when charging by the hour vs charging by project? If you agree to take on a project, give a rough estimate that it might take 10 days for you to work on and charge £X per hour - are you obligated to work for free after those 10 days are up and you have still not managed to complete your project due to unanticipated issues? What if you have delivered the project but bugs are found - should you fix these bugs for free if the 10 days are up or should you charge your client? Also, for the above project, what should be the result when you start on the project, but after the 10 days for whatever reason you have to give up and tell your client that you cannot do it anymore? I realise that this does nothing to build your reputation and relationship with the client but are you obligated to pay back the money paid to you or do you just deliver the half/nearly completed source code and help them find someone else to complete it? The reason I am asking the above questions is because I am very new to freelancing and would like to know how to deal with the above situations if they ever crop up. Thanks!

• Returning row values based on conditional formatting variables

  I'm not entirely sure how to properly explain this, but here we go... I'm trying to create a single budgeting document that allows me to manage purchasing and reconciliation for multiple projects. I would like to create separate sheets per project and have purchased items populate on a master sheet. Using conditional formatting, I've set one of the columns to display an item's status (waiting for approval, approved, ordered, received). I would like the contents of an entire row to populate in a new sheet table once the status is set to "Received." The sheet should update descendingly. I can't attach an image because I don't have a 10 reputation.. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Server 2008 Hard Faults

  Hey all, plase bear with me as I haven't looked at a server in a very long time. The problem I am having is with a Windows 2008 Standard FE Service Pack 2 Intel Xeon X3430 @ 2.40 2.39 GHZ 4 GB Memory 64 Bit There seems to be no problems other than the physical memory peaking at 91%, always with over 100 Hard Faults Per Second. To my understanding hard faults should be fairly rare on a machine with. Are there any logs I can show you? Or investigate myself. The general performance of the machine is ok, i can access SBS2008 and change settings fairly smoothly without hangs etc. However, we connect to the server and do quite a bit of SQL via an application. For a record to retrieve say 20 rows, it can take 20+ seconds. • Has "Killer Game Programming in Java" by Andrew Davison been rendered useless? What new tutorial should I follow? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Killer Game Programming [Java 3D] outdated? 5 answers Its pathetic how it was created in 2005 not so long ago when the Java 3D 1.31 API was released. Now after downloading the source code off the books website and implementing it onto my work-space it cant run. (The 3D Shooter Ch. 23) I downloaded Java 3D 1.5 API, installed it- went back to my source code and javax.media ect.., and EVERY imported class within the game simply couldn't be resolved... they are all outdated.. Please do not say how its meant for a positive curvature in your game development skills. No ~ I got the book to understand how to code 3D textures/particle systems/games. Without seeing results how can I learn? If there is still hope for this book please tell me. Otherwise what other books match this one in Game Programming? This one was very well organized, documented and long. I am not looking for a 3D game prog. book on Java. Rather one that has the same reputation as this one but is a bit newer..

• Good experiences with bulk rate SMS providers?

  We're a pretty popular service, our users are currently sending 100000+ SMS messages (projected 180k this month, and continuing to grow) per month. We're currently using a primary domestic provider that doesn't provide bulk rates and doesn't provide short code access. We're using a few backup providers as well for max redundancy, but aren't thrilled by 'em. We're ideally looking for a service that provides good bulk rates/incentives, good uptime/redundancy/reputation, easy API-integration (including respectable error codes!) ;). Right now, we're looking primarily for a domestic US SMS solution, but aren't averse to using the same provider for both International & US. For those of you using bulk SMS right now - what are your recommendations, experiences, etc. in the bulk SMS domain? It sounds like I'm looking for a golden unicorn here, I know, but any data/recommendations/warnings you've got are helpful!

• Gradually migrate from one SMTP server to another

  I maintain an application that sends out a ton of e-mail on a daily basis. Soon, we will have to migrate to another SMTP-server for that, which has an ip address that has no reputation with respect to email delivery. So instead of just flipping the switch, I would like to start by sending a small percentage of all mail through the new server, and then gradually increase that percentage until we reach 100%. It wouldn't be very hard to implement something in the application itself, but I would like to know if there is an easier, more reliable out-of-the-box-type solution for this. My first thought was to use round-robin DNS for this, but the servers require different credentials, use different protocols (one uses SASL, the other doesn't) and even different port numbers, so I think that rules out the DNS based solution. Is there any way, for example, to configure Postfix to send 1 out of x e-mails to relay host A and the rest to relay host B? Or perhaps a different MTA?

• How do I get excel to close completely after creating a macro in a personal workbook?

  I am using Microsoft Excel 2007 and have several macros in my personal.xlsb workbook, which I use often, so it is very convenient that Excel opens them automatically when it starts. What I don't like is when I click on the "X" in the upper right corner of the window Excel does not exit when I close the last visible workbook. I think that this is because personal.xlsb is still open (though hidden). There are several other questions here on Superuser that have people remove personal.xlsb or move it so it doesn't open on startup (question 65297) or change settings to have only one window show in the taskbar (question 86989). (Sorry there are no hyperlinks--apparently I need more reputation to add additional hyperlinks.) I would like to have personal.xlsb open when I open Excel, have each Excel window show in the taskbar but have Excel exit when I click the "X" on the last workbook that isn't personal.xlsb. Any thoughts on how to achieve this?

• How can I use the shell to make my mp3s a Shoutcast source?

  I'm looking to stream a directory of mp3s from my audio source (Debian server) to my Shoutcast server. The idea is to have an archive playing in the instance that someone isn't broadcasting live. I'm not sure how to continue. I started with extensive Google-ing, and was unable to come up with a solution. Evan Carroll suggested I try here. I appreciate any insight y'all may have. __ On a side note, "users with less than 100 reputation can't create new tags. The tags 'shoutcast-source shoutcast broadcasting' are new. Try using existing tags instead." -- Who can create these?

• Load balancing SMTP in a way that doesn't hide the source IP address

  I need to load balance SMTP to handle some applications that don't know how to use MX records. I set up a Netscaler using the TCP option on port 25 and now Exchange sees the source IP as that of the DMZ of the Netscaler for every connection, not the client. Obviously this prevents RBLs, Whitelists, and all other IP-based reputation to fail. It also make it impossible to whitelist a trusted IP for anonymous relay. Question How should I configure the NetScaler (or Windows Load Balancing) so that I can allow load balancing yet still maintain visibility of the source IP?

• Mono on Linux: Apache or Nginx

  Hi, I'm developing an ASP.NET application that will be run under Linux/Mono for various reasons (mostly to stay away from IIS, quite frankly). Of course the first web server I had in mind was Apache. But Apache, for all its advantages, adds a lot of overhead. Also, the application I'm building needs to be highly scalable and performance is one of the main concern. Apache has, obviously, a very good reputation and its record speaks for itself, but I don't need things like Reverse Proxy or Load Balancing because dedicated network devices would be used for that. So those modules from Apache will never be used. So basically my question is: since Nginx seems to fit exactly needs, is there any caveat I should be aware of? For instance, is Nginx renowned to be particularity safe? When security flaws are detected, how fast are they patched? Any insight on the pros and cons of using either of those servers in conjunction with Mono is welcome.

  Leading a team comprised of three former teams means that we have three of everything.  Three places to gather requirements, three (actually eight or nine) places for customers to submit support requests, three places to plan and track work. We’ve been looking into tools that combine these features into a single product.  Not just Agile planning tools, but those that allow us to look in a single place for requirements, work items, and reports. One of the interesting choices is Software Planner by Automated QA (the makers of Test Complete).  It's a lovely tool with real end-to-end process support.  We’re probably not going to use it for one reason – cost.  I’m sure our company could get a discount, but it’s on a concurrent user license that isn’t cheap for a large number of users.  Some initial guesswork had us paying over $6,000 for 3 concurrent users just to get started with the Enterprise version.  Still, it’s intuitive, has great Agile capabilities, and has a reputation for excellent customer support. At the moment we’re digging deeper into Rational Team Concert by IBM.  Reading the docs on this product makes me want to submit my resume to Big Blue.  Not only does RTC integrate everything we need, but it’s free for up to 10 developers.  It has beautiful support for all phases of Scrum.  We’re going to bring the sales representative in for a demo. This marks one of the few times that we’re trying to resist the temptation to write our own tool.  And I think this is the first time that something so complex may actually be capably provided by an external source.   Hooray for less work! • Why did Google remove the search box in developer tool from Chrome 22 stable release?

  In previous version of Chrome, there's the search box in developer tool, on the right top when I open it, just as shown below. (Sorry I can't upload image cuz' I don't have enough reputation for now.) http://i.minus.com/iklSx2vi0uzFB.JPG But, after I upgraded to the first release of Chrome 22 yesterday, that search box was gone, as shown below. http://i.minus.com/ibxXt9wnBekR7E.JPG It is such a useful search box that I rely on all the time, to search for something, or to validate an xpath. So does Google just 'hide' it somewhere else? Or do they really remove it? Anyone know why they made such changes?

• How to improve relationships between consultants and staff programmers

  I have been a consultant for a small software consulting firm for quite some time now. Our normal business model is not staff augmentation, but such that we find clients who need assistance in building a solution of some kind and then send in a team who can build that solution, work with the existing IT staff, train all involved on supportting that solution, then move on to the next job. We, of course, are still around for any needed ongoing support. We have a great reputation in our area and have been very successful in implementing the solutions that we provide. However, I have noticed a common theme for most of our projects. When we get on-site, there is generally a "stressed" relationship between our team and many of the IT staff currently at the client. I understand completely that there may be some anxiety about our arrival and that defenses can come up when we are around. Many of the folks are understanding and easy to work with, but there are usually some who will not work well with us at all, and who can quickly become a project risk in many ways. We try to go in with open minds and good attitudes, and try NOT to be arrogent or condecending. We generally get deployed when there is a mess to clean up - but we understand that there were reasons decisions were made that got them in the bind they are...so we just try to determine the next step forward and move on. My question is this - I'd like to hear from the IT staff and programmers out there who have had consultants in - what are the things that consultants do that fire up negative feelings and attitudes? What can we do better to make the relationship better, not only in the beginning, but as the project moves forward?

• Are there any home/soho NAS devices that will backup/sync to the cloud?

  Looking for a home office (SOHO) market (priced) network hard drive (NAS) that will sync some or all of its content to a cloud-based backup service. The only option I've been able to find so far is NetGear's [ReadyNAS Vault][1] however from what I've read it's not as secure as it could be, and the service is quite expensive ($200/yr for 50GB of cloud storage) - it's 'powered' by ElephantDrive Ideally would love to see something like Wuala integrated into a Lacie Network HDD - conveniently, I suspect this is in the works as Lacie recently acquired Wuala, however nothing has come of it yet. I know there are options to use rsync with a customizable NAS (such as the very versatile and hackable D-Link DNS-323, but the easier this is to setup and maintain, the better. Thanks! ps. • Is it possible to interrupt or cancel the trash-delete process?

  I am connected to the company server, onsite not remote, which is Windows based. When, in the OS finder, I go to delete a file or directory that resides on the window-based server, the trash progress panel appears as usual. Not infrequently it will just hang there appearing to be active but no progress occurs on the progress bar. So the X is chosen to stop or cancel the process. A new panel appears, and while appearing to be active, again, just hangs there indefinitely. My lack of reputation prevents posting a screen shot - sorry. The question then is this: Is there a way via the Activity Monitor, Terminal, etc. to interrupt this deleting process in the Mac OS? Currently, I have to force shutdown and reboot to eradicate the ever-deleting panel. Finder relaunch does not solve and only eliminates the finder until I force reboot. Any assistance is appreciated. • 1and1: Unable to host an external domain

  I'm sorry if this isn't the right place for this question, but I'm presently having difficulties with my hosting provider (1and1). Two weeks ago, two of my clients bought hosting from them on my recommendation, but as it turned out, 1and1 are having severe technical difficulties. Right now non of their hosting packages are able to accept ANY external domains. So either you pay the costs of transferring the registrar of your domain, or you use the ugly 1and1 domain name. Not any good for a hosting company of 1and1's reputation! They have been promising me for two weeks that they're going to fix the problem, but as you have probably guessed by now, that hasn't been the case. I would like to know if a) Anyone else is in the same boat as me, and b) If there are other comparably reputable hosting providers that I should consider moving to instead? Very disappointing! :( Note: This is for 1and1 in the UK. I imagine it isn't affecting users in other countries(?) Clarification: 1and1 are unable to accept ANY external domains. That means that even if you update your DNS details on your domain, their system cannot be updated to add your external domain to your account.

• How to protect a peer-to-peer network from inappropriate content?

  I’m developing a simple peer-to-peer app in .Net which should enable users to share specific content (text and picture files). As I've learned with my last question, inappropriate content can “relatively” easily be identified / controlled in a centralized environment. But what about a peer-to-peer network, what are the best methods to protect a decentralized system from unwanted (illegal) content? At the moment I only see the following two methods: A protocol (a set of rules) defines what kind of data (e.g. only .txt and jpg-files, not bigger than 20KB etc.) can be shared over the p2p-network and all clients (peers) must implement this protocol. If a peer doesn’t, it gets blocked by other peers. Pro: easy to implement. Con: It’s not possible to define the perfect protocol (I think eMail-Spam filters have the same problem) Some kind of rating/reputation system must be implemented (similar to stackoverflow), so “bad guys” and inappropriate content can be identified / blocked by other users. Pro: Would be very accurate. Con: Would be slow and in my view technically very hard to implement. Are there other/better solutions? Any answer or comment is highly appreciated.

• gitolite post commit hook to update redmine's repository

  Hello, I currently have a ubuntu server machine which has gitolite and redmine installed. Redmine accesses repository copies which are updated using a cron task. Having a cron task to pull the updates seems like an overkill is there anyway a gitolite post-commit script could execute a pull as the redmine user. My current update script looks like this: */15 * * * * redmine cd /home/redmine/repositories/support && git pull The post-commit script I guess should be similar, how can I give the gitolite user the privileges to execute the pull as the redmine user? • How should I manage persistent score in Game Center leaderboards?

  Let's say that I'm developing an iOS RPG where the player gains 1 point per monster kill. The amount of monsters killed is persistent data: it is an endless adventure, and the score keeps on growing. It isn't a "session score" like Fruit Ninja, but rather a "reputation score". There are Game Center leaderboards for that score. Keep killing monsters, your score goes up, and the leaderboards are updated. My problem is that, technically, you can log out and log in using a different Game Center account, kill one monster, and the leaderboards will be updated for the new GC account. Supposing that this score is a big deal, this could be considered as cheating, because if you have a score of 2000, any of your friends who have never played the game can simply log into your iPhone, play the game, and the system will update the score for their accounts, essentially giving them 2000 points in the leaderboards for doing nothing. I have considered linking one GC account to a specific save game. It won't update your score unless you're using the linked GC account. But what if the player actually needs to change their GC account? Technically they would be forced to start a new game and link their account to that profile. How should I prevent this kind of cheat? Essentially, I don't want someone to distribute a high schore to multiple GC accounts, given the fact that the game updates the score constantly since it isn't a "session score". I do realize that it isn't quite a big deal. But I'm curious about how to avoid this.
