  I have a Windows Server 2003 and asp.net website running on localhost. I have to install php and mysql, but php installation doesn't work for whatever reason. I was wondering if I could install package such as xampp on windows server to save time and hassle installing in manually (I could not find a tutorial for this). I was wondering though, if it is safe, i.e. what will happen if I go to http://localhost/ - will I get the php or asp website? In general, is it safe to install xampp on windows server 2003? All advice greatly appreciated

• Outlook 2003 won't send mail

  A colleague's e-mail has just started playing up - he's using Outlook/Office 2003 on a Win XP SP3 machine. Yesterday his mail has suddenly stopped being received, although there are no errors of any kind that i can see. It was only noticed because he didn't have any replys all day. His e-mails seem to send fine - no errors come up, the mail goes into Sent Items as usual, but it never arrives at it's destination. However, when mail is sent from Outlook Web Access, e-mails send fine. All connections to the server appear fine and outlook is 'connected' but I've had a look at the message tracking on our Exchange 2003 server and no messages are appearing when sent from outlook, only when sent through OWA. Where should i be looking ? Thanks.

• Cloning Windows 2003 Server to new hard drive results in failure

  Scenario: Old hdd is a Seagate 320gb SATA drive New hdd is a WD 320gb SATA drive Created an exact clone and replaced old hdd with new hdd. Boot up with new hdd, it gets into Windows 2003 server environment but things look weird. Lots of system event failures in the event viewer log. System is barely unusable, critical services are all down. Boot up with old hdd, everything is fine. QUESTION: Is it possible to do a simple clone of a Windows 2003 server system? All I'm changing is the hard drive, everything else stays the same (old CPU/old mobo/etc..)

  I am moving a scheduled task from a Windows 7 machine to a Windows Server 2003 machine. On Windows 7 I can configure my task to run every hour indefinitely by setting up a custom trigger like so: On Windows Server 2003, I assume I need to use the advanced schedule options, and I have got this far: Whether I choose duration or time, my task seems to have an expiry date, how do I get this to run indefinitely? The only thing I can think of at the minute is to setup 24 schedules for my task, one for each hour but there has to be a more elegant way. Thanks

• Window 2003 is PHP Limiting my Download Speed?

  Hello, I have window 2003 100mbps server, i have tried using php script such as php indexer, zina pancake.org and others. The php script use to serve download such as images and music songs. I personally have 20mbps internet speed. When i use the php script (download pass thru PHP headers) , it will download at constant speed of 30-40KBps. I have tried different webserver such as apache 1.3, apache 2.2, abyss webserver & lighttpd for windows. The speed while relying on php is same constant 30-40KBps however when i tried direct link/straight from apache, the speed is 1MB/s. Is there any settings in Window 2003 Registry or PHP should i change to make the download speed is more faster when going thru PHP?

• Manipulating Exchange 2003 shared contacts folder remotely

  I've got a CRM web app running on a remote server that needs to synchronise it's contacts with the in-house Exchange 2003 shared contacts. Exchange 2003 doesn't appear to support web services. What would the typical approach to this problem be? My initial instinct would be to open port 80 on the Exchange server, run a simple webserver, POST to it and then control Exchange via OLE automation scripting (if that's what people are still calling it!) but there might be a better solution I'm not aware of. Any suggestions?

• Server 2003 Filter mobile devices via MAC

  At one of my client's sites I need to keep my users unauthorized devices off the wireless. They all know the SSID and Password because many of them have laptops that need the wireless. I'm running out of IP address's and we have sent out numerous emails asking them to stay off, but like most users they ignore IT's email. I'm currently running Server 2003 as the GC/DC (but have 2008 servers in place) and 2 Netgear WNAP320. I've seen several posts similar to what I'm looking for but they seem to deal with Linux. My question is how do I go about doing this without migrating (scheduled for the end of the year) to a new server and is it possible to do this within Server 2003? Thanks msindle

The site is running in IIS at a Windows Server 2003 and the solution I came up it that I will Schedule a task that requests the home page every 5 minutes. I am sure that this way the site will stay alive almost all the time. I have downloaded Wget from Wget from Windows and I have installed it at my windows server 2003 but I don't know how to use it in order to ping the server but not download anything. Since I want to use this forever I don't want to save anything on the disk, can you provide me with the command that pings a web page but don't save anything on the disk?

  I wanted to reinstall Office 2003 Pro. I retrieved the key with NirSoft ProduKey, confirmed with Jelly Bean Windows Key Finder and the key is the same. • Scheduled task does not run on WIndows 2003 server on VMWare unattened, runs fine otherwise

  Scheduled task does not run on Windows 2003 server on VMWare. The same setup runs fine on standalone server. Test below explains the problem. We really need to run a more complex bat file, but this shows the issue. I have a bat file that copies a file from server A to server B. I use full path name, no drive mapping. Runs fine on server B from command prompt. I created a task that runs this bat file under a domain id with password that is part of administrator group on both servers. Task runs fine from Scheduled task screen, and as a scheduled task as long as somebody is logged into the server. If nobody is logged in, the task does not run. There is no error message in Task Scheduler log, just an entry that the task started, bit no entry for finish or an error code. To add insult to injury, if the task copies a file in the opposite direction, from server B to server A, it runs fine as a scheduled unattended task. If I copy a file from server B to server B, the task also runs fine unattended, I recreated exactly the same setup on a standalone server. No issues at all. I checked obvious things like the task has "run only as logged in" unchecked, domain id has run as a batch job privilege and logon rights, Task Scheduler service runs as a local system, automatic start. Any suggestions?

  I'm trying to remove sbs from my sbs 2003 server. Also I'm logged in as Administrator. However When I start to go through the wizard it gives me the following error. You must be a member of the Domain Admins, Schema Admins, and Enterprise Admins group. I then did some research and found this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842694) and I came to the point where it says to delete the server from Sites and Services. However when I clicked delete it wanted me to dcpromo the box first. However I have read you have to uninstall exchange first and then dcpromo it to remove AD. Any ideas?

• Windows 8 / IIS 8 Concurrent Requests Limit

  IIS 8 on Windows Server 2012 doesn’t have any fixed concurrent request limit, apart from whatever limit would be reached when resources are maxed. However, the client version of IIS 8, which is on Windows 8, does have a concurrent connection request limitation to limit high traffic production uses on a client edition of Windows. Starting with IIS 7 (Windows Vista), the behavior changed from previous versions.  In previous client versions of IIS, excess requests would throw a 403.9 error message (Access Forbidden: Too many users are connected.).  Instead, Windows Vista, 7 and 8 queue excessive requests so that they will be handled gracefully, although there is a maximum number of requests that will be processed simultaneously. Thomas Deml provided a concurrent request chart for Windows Vista many years ago, but I have been unable to find an equivalent chart for Windows 8 so I asked Wade Hilmo from the IIS team what the limits are.  Since this is controlled not by the IIS team itself but rather from the Windows licensing team, he asked around and found the authoritative answer, which I’ll provide below.   We observed that sudden increase of SQL connections during a specific hour, it is a backend of a SharePoint 2007 Farm. From SharePoint 2007 Perspective: 1. Incremental crawling is scheduled at that time and few of the Timer jobs (normal timer jobs) are scheduled to run every mins / per 10mins. 2. Number of user requests are less. From SQL Server 2005 Perspective: 1. Transaction log backup is scheduled at that time 2. No other scheduled jobs are running at that time. so, how to narrow down the issue, what would be causing the sudden SQL connection increase?

• Windows RDP cannot connect to x64 server from XP SP3+

  Hi all, I have a strange problem that I can't seem to find the answer to anywhere online. The issue has to do with using Windows RDP to connect to our servers. Here is what works: -XP/Vista client (any SPs) connecting to 32-bit Server 2003 machine -XP (SP2 and lower) client conecting to 64-bit Server 2003 machine Here is what does not work: - XP SP3+/Vista client connecting to 64-bit Server 2003 machine It appears that the issue is that XP SP3 and Vista clients cannot connect to x64 Server 2003 boxes. After entering the username/password, we get an error message saying the below, and the connection drops: To log on to this remote computer, you must have Terminal Server User Access persmissions on this computer. By default, members of the Remote Desktop Users group have these permissions. If you are not a member of the Remote Desktop Users group or another group that has these persmissions, or if the Remote Desktop User group does not have these permissions, you must be granted these permissions manually. The issue is that the user is a member of the Administrators group, which has permission. Also, logging in using the same username, but from an XP SP2 machine, has no problems at all. I hope I explained this well enough, and any help/insight that can be given would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom

  If you’re still running XP, currently have Office 2003 installed on your machine, and skipped Office 2007, you might want to upgrade to Office 2010. In this guide we will show you the upgrade process or how to run them side by side. In this example we are upgrading from Office 2003 Standard to Office Professional Plus 2010 RTM (Final) on XP Professional. System Requirements To run Office 2010 on your XP machine you have to make sure you have Service Pack 3 and Microsoft Silverlight installed (links below). Or you can just install them through Windows Update. Recommended Hardware 1GHZ CPU or higher 512 MB of RAM or higher 1024×768 Resolution or higher DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics card with 64 MB of memory or higher Installing Office 2010 Simply kick off the Office Professional Plus 2010 installation. Enter in your product key… Agree to the EULA…   Select the Customize button… Setup will detect Office 2003 and allow you to remove all applications, keep them, or select only the ones you want to keep. In this example we’re going to remove Excel and PowerPoint, and keep Outlook and Word 2003. Next, click the Installation Options tab and select Office programs you want to install. Since we’re keeping Outlook 2003 and don’t want to use Outlook 2010, we’re making sure not to install Outlook 2010. However, we want to run Word 2003 and 2010 on the same machine. After you’ve made your selections click the Upgrade button. The installation begins and you’re shown the progress. The amount of time it takes to install will vary between systems. Installation is complete and you can close out of the installer. Now when you go into the Start menu under Microsoft Office, you’ll see both versions of the Office apps available. Here is a shot of Word 2003 and 2010 running together on our XP machine.   Conclusion If you’re moving from Office 2003 to 2010, this allows you to install both versions side by side. It gives you a chance to learn 2010 features, and still work in the familiar 2003 environment when you need to get things done quickly. The error is logged on the server, but the user is able to sync, albeit slowly. • Server 2003 Remote Desktop loses its virtual printer image of the local printer

  Server 2003 Remote Desktop provides service to stores served by several ISPs. The server loses its virtual printer image of the local printer (as seen from the remote store site) and a copy of the original local printer appears on the local computer with a different driver without notice. Specifically: A remote desktop session is opened on a local computer that has a Brother HL2140 USB printer connected and the associated software installed with a correct driver shown under the “advanced” button. The server has the same Brother software and driver. An application that is running on the server attempts to print on the local printer connected to the local computer running Vista Pro or XP Pro. Either it works correctly (Good) or it does not print (Bad) or it prints on another Local Printer connected to another local computer logged into the server (Bad and Odd). When it doesn’t print (or prints somewhere else) we ask the customer to look for the (virtual) printer using the Remote desktop view of the server and the printer is gone. Then we ask the customer to look at the printers folder in the local computer. There are several possibilities: The printer is there, but the driver is mysteriously changed in the drop down to MDX something; we have the customer select the other (proper) Brother driver, and all is well again, as now after the change, the virtual printer in the server (which now matches the local printer) appears again, and so printing can resume. A “copy” of the printer mysteriously appears in the local printer’s folder and after we delete it the virtual printer in the server appears again and so printing can resume. Note that in both case 1 and 2, the server sometimes sends the print job elsewhere, to some other local computer. Meanwhile in the log file, endless errors are reported and the server eventually crashes, sometimes twice a day. I’m puzzled what changes the local printer driver and I’m puzzled what loads the copy 2 or copy 3 of the printer in the local printer folder. This entire description randomly occurs on any of 40+ local computers in eight different locations in different ISPs, all sharing one Domain.

• Anonymous access to SMB share hosted on Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

  Hi all, First off, I have read through this post and a whole slew of non-SF posts which seem to address the same or a similar problem, however I was still unable to fix my problem. I've got three machines in this situation: a domain-joined server that runs Server 2008 R2 Enterprise ("share server") a domain-joined workstation running XP Pro SP3 ("test server") a domain-unjoined test server running Server 2003 R2 SP2 ("workstation") The share server is exposing a share on the network that the test server must access--it's a Source/Symbol Server share for our debugging purposes. I believe visual studio simply accesses the the share with its own credentials in this case, meaning that the share must be accessible anonymously since the test server isn't joined to the domain and there's no opportunity to supply domain authentication. I've attempted a lot of things to avoid the authentication window when accessing the share: I've enabled the Guest account on the share server and given Guest full sharing/NTFS permissions for the share. I've given ANONYMOUS LOGON full sharing/NTFS permissions for the share. I've added my share to “Network Access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously” in LSP. I've disabled “Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares” in LSP. I've enabled “Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users” in LSP. Added ANONYMOUS LOGON to “Access this computer from the network” in LSP. Added the Guest account to “Access this computer from the network” in LSP. Attempted to provision the share using the Share and Storage Management MMC snap-in. Unfortunately when I attempt to access the share from the test server, I still see the prompt and I'm forced to enter "Guest" manually. I also tried this workflow using the local administrator account on a workstation, and the same thing happens both with and without XP Simple File Sharing enabled. Any idea why I'm getting these results, or what I should have done differently?
