• Dell D630 - Touchpad does not move the mouse cursor

  Windows XP - Dell D630 - Synaptics Touch Pad driver installed. The system tray icon that shows the movement of your finger on the touchpad registeres movement. The scroll feature of the touchpad works on any window with a scroll bar. The double click works even. But it never actually moves the cursor on the screen. An external mouse works with out problems, and I've replaced the palm-rest/touchpad and it continues to happen. The touch stick in the middle of the keyboard works without problems. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Reduce weight in healthy way

  This post is my daily summary of activities that I am going to take to reduce my overall weight by 15 lbs. I am not an overweight person as per my height of 5.11 I have decent weight of 178.4 and good body build. But from a long time(approx 3 month) I am thinking of getting 2-3 abs (note not 6 abs) and reducing my weight to below 170 ( which I was 2 years ago). This post will work as my daily diary of what I ate, what exercises I did, what apps/software I used to monitor my weight loss. Sometime it will not contain much information but some time when I will research will contain information for people who really want to reduce weight. My current target for next few week is to run 2.5 miles everyday under 30 minutes. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetable. No burger or tacos. No meat either fat or lean. And checking body weight after every four hour. Here are reading for today10:00 AM  - 178.22:00 PM    - 178.4I have already ran for 2 miles in 25 minutes, did a little bit of shoulder exercise and had eaten small bowl of vegetable biryani and two bread.I hope this post and all coming post will give the reader the first hand experience of a person who had read every blog and articles related to reducing weight and now trying to do it by implementing all of them by self. My approach will be a healthy way of reducing weight, I am not going to starve my self or going to eat only fruits all day. I will enjoy all the food item that I like to eat and will work hard on my body. This way I will / reduce the weight naturally and will increase the flexibility, durability and immunity of my system /body.

• No break compatible with Linux box?

  I'm buying this unit from deal extreme: it's a bitorrent downloader, with NAS capability. I'm interested in sharing an external HD in it, with media and backup purposes. I'm afraid of energy problems (don't know if this is the correct term), corrupting my mounted drives (like after a storm), so I thought about buying a No Break that sends a "signal" to my Linux box, and a script in my Linux box would unmout everything to avoid problems. Do this "No Break signal" feature exists? Do you have model suggestions? Thanks!

• Website is not clickable in Windows XP Internet Explorer 7

  I have installed Windows XP Virtual PC on Windows 7 to test a site that is having issues in IE7 on windows xp - the website loads up but you cannot click on hyperlinks - its like the website has frozen - now is this a browser support issue or OS issue? Can anyone shed any light on this? Is there any browser tools i can use to spot any problems? Sorry if i have been too vague - not much else to say really - completely lost.. Maybe this might help a little; Any guidance is appreciated UPDATE: I think i know what the problem maybe - its the jQuery UI reference that is causing issues with the site. • Is it possible to upgrade PHP to 5.3 on a Centos Kloxo installation?

  I have a VPS running Centos with Kloxo on and I was wondering how I would upgrade the PHP to 5.3 - It's currently running 5.2.6. • How to troubleshoot git "unable to set permission" on adding project?

  Finally decided to move from Subversion to Git, but am having problems with my first project. Did my "git init" and am trying to do a "git add" of my project, but it's failing with: $ git add . error: unable to set permission to '.git/objects/6b/6018c1c76dc5ec159d5cb65bab72 fa300d52f6' error: build.xml: failed to insert into database error: unable to index file build.xml fatal: adding files failed I have full permissions to the directories in question. The only odd thing about it is that it's a drive mounted (and mapped) from a server over CIFS. No problems creating/editing files/permissions with other applications. The host is Windows Vista x64 and I'm running git under Cygwin. Server is Windows 2008. Any other ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

• How to disable 3G USB Modem internal storage from being loaded by linux kernel?

  Hi, I've got a problem with my 3G modem [Huawei E122]. It has internal storage and kernel assigns a device [/dev/sdX] to it. Because of that, every second time my machine will not boot - kernel panic - as my usb hdd gets assigned /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sda. I cannot use LABEL nor UUID in root= kernel parameter, as it is only available when using initrd, and I can't use it - I am using Debian on my router - mips architecture machine. I have to prevent this from happening, as my router has to start everyday and I have to be sure it works ok. I don't have physical access to restart it when something goes wrong. I don't use my modem internal storage, there's no SD card inserted. However kernel detects the reader and loads it. I can not prevent loading od usb drivers since my hdd is on USB as well. I will appreciate any ideas.

• Are short abbreviated method/function names that don't use full words bad practice or a matter of style?

  Is there nowadays any case for brevity over clarity with method names? Tonight I came across the Python method repr() which seems like a bad name for a method to me. It's not an English word. It apparently is an abbreviation of 'representation' and even if you can deduce that, it still doesn't tell you what the method does. A good method name is subjective to a certain degree, but I had assumed that modern best practices agreed that names should be at least full words and descriptive enough to reveal enough about the method that you would easily find one when looking for it. Method names made from words help let your code read like English. repr() seems to have no advantages as a name other than being short and IDE auto-complete makes this a non-issue. An additional reason given in an answer is that python names are brief so that you can do many things on one line. Surely the better way is to just extract the many things to their own function, and repeat until lines are not too long. Are these just a hangover from the unix way of doing things? Commands with names like ls, rm, ps and du (if you could call those names) were hard to find and hard to remember. I know that the everyday usage of commands such as these is different than methods in code so the matter of whether those are bad names is a different matter.

• Terminal Server 2003 Performance Troubleshooting

  Let me get your thoughts on terminal server performance problems. The server hosts average 25 users which, after running some numbers, on average use 600MB memory with their main applications running (web browser, adobe reader, IP phone client). All users are on the same LAN as server. We constantly experience slow response and short session lockups. Combined CPU usage is on average 10%. What appears strange to me is that the system shows 29GB physical memory with 25GB of it free. The page file usage is about 50% averaging 9GB used. Some server specs OS: Server 2003 32bit Enterprise with /PAE flag RAM: 32GB CPU: 2xQuad Core @ 2.27Ghz HD: RAID5 1.2GB After doing basic troubleshooting using performance monitor it leads me to believe that the performance problems are caused by the 32bit OS limitation in addressing full 32GB of physical memory even though the /PAE flag is used. Can anyone suggest something, troubleshooting steps that can lead to a more conclusive answer? Thanks

• Has anyone tried the "Secret LCD Monitor" hack? [closed]

  I'm genuinely curious to know, has anyone tried this hack? I can get LCD monitors for cheap at a place near where I live, and I'd like to try it myself, but I'd like to get more info on it before I do so to increase my chances of success. I'm looking for more info on the entire process, especially about any solvents I can use should I run into any glue problems. Questions for anyone that HAS tried it: Does it actually work, or is this some gag? If it works, is there any decrease in image quality or viewing angles? Since the polarization filters are essentially stuck to glasses, does that mean you're going to have to sit directly in front of the monitor at all times, and any shift in your position means that you won't be able to see the image? Does it improve/worsen ghosting or other LCD artifacts? Are there any problems with eye strain?

• Ubuntu 11.10 loads from live usb fine, but boots to black screen from harddrive. Why?

  A few days ago I had a hard drive failure, which was running Windows XP (32-bit) just fine. The second hard drive in my computer held a few unimportant files, so I formatted it in the Ubuntu setup and installed 11.10 without a hitch. I had been using it for about a week, but decided to install Windows 7 (64-bit) in order to utilize Networking with my home server (running Windows Server 2000). My system is 64-bit based, and thus I had no problems installing other than a basic RAM error that required me to remove my RAM down to a single stick. I played with the settings in Windows 7 for around an hour before I shut down. After reinstalling the RAM, Windows 7 would not boot. In this, I then assumed that something about my system was rejecting Win7 and I reinstalled Ubuntu. However, now Ubuntu (11.10) boots into black screen, and I've already attempted activating the grub menu with the shift key, and following steps listed here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen but nothing seems to work. I've reinstalled twice now, with the same result each time. Now, the very odd part about this whole scenario is that the USB I installed from has no problems booting as a live USB. This puzzles me greatly, because the hard drive boots straight to black screen and the live USB loads normally. At this point, my only theory is that the boot sector of the hard disk was somehow corrupted with Win7, and that Ubuntu was unable to completely write through. I used Darik's Boot n Nuke to wipe the drive, but was met with an error, this also puzzles me because the hard disk has no promblems reading or writing. Any suggestions/comments are appreciated. If you have a theory, I will be more than happy to oblige. Additional information: Intel Core2 Duo e6400 2.13GHz nVidia GeForce 7-series (7900 GS) 4 GB DDR2 333MHz (2x 2GB) Dell XPS 410 BIOS Revision 2.5.3

  We are students and we have to make a project by using SharePoint. We have already learned the basic steps of SharePoint 2010 but now we have some problems with using the Active Directory. We've deleted SharePoint from the server and afterwards we've installed the AD-role and finished dcpromo. When we’ve reinstalled SharePoint 2010, we have some problems in the configuration of SharePoint. It automatically ask for a Databaseserver but we don't have one in the company of our project. My question is if there is any possibility to use SharePoint with AD and without a Databaseserver. If it is possible it would be nice to tell me how.

• Hardware issues on Samsung NF208 (NF210)

  I'm trying to get Ubuntu 10.10 running on my wife's Samsung NF208 (same spec as NF210, but shipped without OS), and I have run into a pile of problems: At first, there were problems with audio, display brightness, and WiFi, so I reinstalled Ubuntu from scratch. After reinstalling, the audio has started working but the WiFi loses network access all the time and then it takes 5-10 minutes for it to reconnect to the network. Also, display brightness is at its lowest. I have tried to use the brightness command but it won't run. Is this system utterly incompatible with Ubuntu, or are there working WiFi and display drivers for it somewhere? I have googled for days but haven't found anything useful. Help me. Update: I never got it working properly. I came across lots of useful tips and tricks over at the forum linked to in the accepted answer but I just wasn't able to get it working and stable enough for the intended use. • importing old .eml files int outlook 2010

  I was having so many problems with my laptop & Windows vista that I have updated to Windows 7 64bit. Because I was having so may problems I wanted a 'clean' upgrade so didn't want to carry over any programs or settings. Prior to changing over I saved all the folders I wanted from MS mail to a separate drive and then updated to Win 7 and Office 2010. To my horror I don't seem to be able to import my .eml messages into Outlook which means all my mail is in limbo. Please can anyone help me to simply import my old inbox messages into my new inbox as I have given up trying using the import/export menu as there doesn't seem to be a choice that works. Help!! Not too good a nerd!

• How to handle monetary values in PHP and MySql?

  I've inherited a huge pile of legacy code written in PHP on top of a MySQL database. The thing I noticed is that the application uses doubles for storage and manipulation of data. Now I came across of numerous posts mentioning how double are not suited for monetary operations because of the rounding errors. However, I have yet to come across a complete solution to how monetary values should be handled in PHP code and stored in a MySQL database. Is there a best practice when it comes to handling money specifically in PHP? Things I'm looking for are: How should the data be stored in the database? column type? size? How should the data be handling in normal addition, subtraction. multiplication or division? When should I round the values? How much rounding is acceptable if any? Is there a difference between handling large monetary values and low ones? Note: A VERY simplified sample code of how I might encounter money values in everyday life: $a= $_POST['price_in_dollars']; //-->(ex: 25.06) will be read as a string should it be cast to double? $b= $_POST['discount_rate'];//-->(ex: 0.35) value will always be less than 1 $valueToBeStored= $a * $b; //--> any hint here is welcomed $valueFromDatabase= $row['price']; //--> price column in database could be double, decimal,...etc. $priceToPrint=$valueFromDatabase * 0.25; //again cast needed or not? I hope you use this sample code as a means to bring out more use cases and not to take it literally of course. Bonus Question If I'm to use an ORM such as Doctrine or PROPEL, how different will it be to use money in my code.

• chroot for unsecure programs execution

  Hi, I have never set-up a chroot-jailed environment before and I am afraid I need some help to do it well. To explain shortly what this is all about: I have a webserver to which users send python scripts to process various files that are stored on the server (the system is for Research purpose). Everyday a cron job starts the execution of the uploaded scripts via a command of this kind: /usr/bin/python script_file.py All of this is really insecure and I would like to create a jail in which I would copy the necessary files (uploaded scripts, files to process, python binary and dependencies). I already looked at various utilities to create jails but none of them seemed up-to-date or were lacking solid documentation (ie. the links proposed in How can I run an untrusted python script) Could anyone guide me to a viable solution to my problem? like a working example of a script that creates a jail, put some files in it and executes a python script? • POLL: How do you build your interfaces in xcode for iphone/coco-touch applications?

  Hi all, It's been 2 months i'm using xcode and building iphone apps, and i'm finding it really hard to grasp the good design for the applications. I always face problems like you can't put your tabbarcontroller in another custom viewcontroller sort of a thing? or other problems... That 'sometimes' - of course - would work if you did the creation of the views/viewcontrollers programmatically. so I don't know if i should start writing the creation of my objects or use interface builder. This is why i'm asking this poll question, to see what's the most accepted way among other developers. I'm not going to answer my question, so the votes would not increase my reputation and risk my poll being closed soon. I prefer that the first two readers of this question should answer by 'using IB' and the second one 'programmatically' and the rest would vote up or down for these two answers. • Google Chrome on Ubuntu 12.04 not rendering webpages correctly

  I am facing some serious web page rendering issues with Chrome. It is more prominent during javascript based animations and stuff on websites like youtube. I have tried removing chrome using (sudo apt-get purge google-chrome-stable) and then reinstalling it. But the problems still persist. The same webpages work correctly on firefox on ubuntu and chrome on windows. The problem only shows up when I use chrome on ubuntu. I think the issue has started after I updated to the latest version of Chrome. I have used Chrome previously on this machine without any problems. I have attached a image that demonstrates the issue. What could possibly be the problem? • NetDiag + TCP Blocking?

  We are facing some issue with the sharepoint 2007 timer jobs everyday at a specific time, so decide to track the tcp blocking informartion during those hours using NetDiag tool. We are not able to find the required information if we uses "netdiag /test:ipsec", what is the command that can be used to pull the TCP blocking information and how to configure it? if i ran the command "netdiag /test:ipsec /debug" it is returning "IP Security test . . . . . . . . . : Skipped", what does it mean?

• Ubuntu Server 12.04, NAT, Router, DNS. It just doesnt work

  I recently inherited some server hardware from work and decided that it could be my main router at home (among other things). Ubuntu 12.04 server installation harware wise goes well and everything is found and working when I boot up. So I begin with setting up eth1 with DHCP. This works fine and it gets a public IP address from my modem and we have a working internet connection. Then I set up my other NIC (eth0) as static (192.168.0.1) and this also works fine. I can access it from other computers in the network. The problems are coming when I am trying to set up a DHCP server with isc-dhcp-server. It seems like it is working and giving the computers IP adresses but after one reboot it stops working. After the reboot eth1 will get a public ip from the modem but it doesnt have internet access. I have to manually run dhcpcd eth1 to get it to work again. As far as I know I havent made any changes to DNS. What am I doing wrong? I have never really had problems with this before. :)

• /srv/mm/Music (etc) Twonky won't scan here for media

  Is there something special about /srv/mm/ that Twonky server refuses to scan there? I previously had my system set up with all my Music, Video and Photo folders in /srv/mm shared by Samba, miniDLNA etc, with no problems. I came to install Twonky to replace miniDLNA and after two days of tearing my hair out, changing permissions and owners of the directories I ended up making a new directory at /multimedia and moved my Music, Video and Photo folders in there. Twonky then scanned them all straight away with no problems. I'm running Arch Linux (plugapps specifically) on a NAS. The solution is already implemented (moving the directory) I'm just wondering technically why Twonky might have refused to look for my media in the /srv/mm directories.

• 11.10 install hangs at different places

  I've been trying to install Oneiric for some time now, and I've looked everywhere for a solution to the problems I've been having. So far, I've attempted four times to install it, so now I'm up to a point of panic. So I grabbed the 11.10 x64 iso from the website, and after verifying that the md5 hash is correct, I burned that onto my last remaining clean CD. On my first attempt, everything went perfectly up to the middle of the installation, and the progress bar stopped when it said: "configuring target system." I could do everything else, only the installation seemed to have stopped. After I googled my problem, I went and used the "check disc for errors" option, which said everything was fine. Then I tried the installation again, only this time, I selected "Install Ubuntu Now" instead of the "try before installing". Again, the same problem. My second and third tries didn't even reach the installation phase. It just stopped at the 5 blinking dots and never went any further. I used the same non-rewritable cd for all the attempts, as the error check didn't show any problems and because I'm currently out of usable cds. System: Core i3 CPU @ 3.4 GHz, 500 GB HDD (250g used for Win7, 70g used for preexisting system partitions, 180g unallocated).
