• Why does my company's software download get blocked by anti-virus programs when downloading from the company website but not other websites?

  My company distributes software via website download off of a URL that is on our company's website. The download is an .EXE. We are getting calls from multiple customers saying the download is being blocked. We can help them download by turning off the virus-scan software, but wondering what is causing the block. Here are the details: We have other downloadable .EXEs that download fine without being blocked from the same company website. Our problem download file downloads fine from other websites (i.e., Dropbox) without being blocked. In summary, this one particular download from our company website is being blocked by various anti-virus programs a high percentage of the time. Any suggestions?

• How to watch disk free space change on Linux?

  As the title implies, I want to know how to watch disk free space change on Linux instead polling it periodically via statfs. When the free space is changed, a signal is emitted to allow the application having a chance to handle the change event. On Windows, it can be done by FindFirstChangeNotification with FILE_NOTIFY_CHANGE_SIZE. When the free space is changed, the HANDLE object returend by FindFirstChangeNotification gets signaled and let application do something. Is there any similar way to do that on Linux? Thanks.

• Lock down PC so only a few programs can be used?

  I'm interested in locking down my PC so that only a few programs can be used. For example, when I'm writing a paper I only want to be able to use Word. No Firefox or DVD player because I will be distracted. I want to have various modes (one for writing a paper, another for doing taxes) that will prevent me from using any program except for the ones I need to perform a task. Is there a program that will do that? Can be free or commercial.

• Why does compressing and decompressing my SSD hard drive free up space?

  I bought an SSD (SandForce 2), created a tiny 25GB partition on it for Windows and installed Windows 7 64-bit. In order to free disk space, I enabled compression on the drive using the Properties entry in the context menu for the drive in Explorer. Prior to compressing I had around 5GB of free space. After compression I had 4GB, so compression was not working for me. I figured this might have happened because of the built-in data compression of the SSD. I decompressed the files again - after decompression, it left me with 7GB of free space! Better yet, after restarting, I had 10GB. What is happening here?

I would like to try to disable as many dlls and programs from loading at boot as I can. What files in vista do I change to go about doing this? All the guides I've seen do it from within Vista. • Any programs for getting rid of .DS_Store files? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to prevent Mac OS X creating .DS_Store files on non Mac (HFS) Volumes? I dual boot between Mac and Windows. When I browse my Windows partition with Finder, it drops little .DS_Store turds all over the folders. They show up when I boot back into Windows. Right now I've got one on my Desktop, sigh. Are there any (free) programs I can use to stop this from happening? I know, I know, there's a Finder setting to stop dropping .DS_Store files on network drives, but my local Windows partition is NOT a network drive.

• Get percentage free space on database volumes w/ SQL Server 2005?

  I am currently using SQL Server 2005 and (undocumented I believe) master..xp_fixeddrives to get free space on my database volumes as part of my monitoring. However, this only gives me an absolute number of MB free. What I really need is percentage free. Is there another way in SQL Server 2005 to get this? If not, is there some other light-weight way to get it? If I can, I want to avoid installing a Java JRE, or Perl, or Python on my database server. Perhaps vbscript, or a small Windows executable on the file system? Yes, I know I can Google this, and I have. It looks like there are a few ways to accomplish it, and I'm curious how my DBA brethren have handled this.

• Why can't I open programs after watching youtube videos for a while?

  I have recently built a new PC, and it worked fine for a while (1-2 months of no problems whatsoever). However in the recent weeks I noticed that after I watched some youtube videos and closed everything, I can no longer do anything except move the mouse and expand the Startup Menu. If I click on any of the programs on the Start Menu or type a program on the Run text box, it won't open anything. I can't open taskmgr, or windows explorer, or even shut down the PC. I don't have anything else running when I'm watching videos except ZoneAlarm and Avast. The only workaround I can do when this happens is a forced shutdown (holding the power button of my PC), and restart if I wanted to do anything more. But this happens a lot - about 4-5 times a week so I'm worried it would fry up my hardware if I keep on doing this. • Keyboard shortcut to cycle through programs (rather than just the alt-tab switch)?

  This question applies to both Windows and Mac OS X because I intend to use my mouse (Logitech G700) with both of them. The idea is I want one of my configurations to use two of my buttons to switch applications. However binding them to Alt/Cmd+Tab and Shift+Alt/Cmd+Tab is not good because the former functions as a toggle, and the latter cycles (in an unpredictable order). What I want is to move through my open applications in a circular buffer order. Do either of these OS's provide any keyboard shortcut that accomplishes this? I could live with just Alt/Cmd+Tab set to one button, but it limits me to being able to switch between only two programs.

• Create an iTunes Account without a credit card

  iTunes Store offers a large variety of free content, but to download it you have to have an account. Usually you have to enter your credit card information to sign up, but here’s an easy way to get an iTunes account for free downloads without entering any payment info. Although iTunes Store is known for paid downloads of movies, music, and more, it also has a treasure trove of free media.  Some of it, including Podcasts and iTunes U educational content do not require an account to download.  However, any other free content, including free iPhone/iPod Touch apps and free or promotional music, videos, and TV Shows all require an account to download.  If you try to download a free movie or music download, you will be required to enter payment information. Even though your card will not be charged, it will be kept on file so you can be charged if you download a for-pay item.  However, if you only plan to download free items, it may be preferable to not have your account linked to a credit card. The following steps will get you an account without entering your credit card info. Getting Started First, make sure you have iTunes installed.  If you don’t already have it, download and install it (link below) with the default settings. Now open iTunes, and click the iTunes Store link on the left. Click the App Store link on the top of this page. Select a free app to download.  A simple way to do this is to scroll down to the Top Free Apps box on the right side, hover your mouse over the first item, and click on the Free button that appears when you hover over it. A popup will open asking you to sign in with your Apple ID.  Click “Create New Account”. Click Continue to create your account. Check the box to accept the Store Terms and Conditions, and click Continue.   Enter your email address, password, security question, and date of birth, and uncheck the boxes to get email if you don’t want it…then click Continue. Now, you will be asked to provide a payment method.  Notice now that the last option says None!  Click that bullet option… Then enter your billing address.  Simply enter your normal billing address, even though you are not entering a payment method.  Click Continue and your account will be created! If you get the Address Verification screen just verify your county and click Done. An email will be sent to you to verify your account… Click on the link in your email to verify your account, iTunes will launch and you’re prompted to enter in the Apple ID and Password you just created. Your account is successfully created! Now you can easily download any free media from iTunes.  Keep an eye on the Free on iTunes box on the bottom of the iTunes Store page for interesting downloads, or if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, watch the popular Free downloads on the Apps page. And of course there is always great content on iTunes U to grab free as well. Purchasing for-pay media If you want to purchase an item on the iTunes store later, simply click on the item to download as normal.  Click Buy to proceed with the purchase. iTunes will prompt you that you need to enter payment information to complete the purchase.  Enter your Apple ID email and password, and then add the payment information as prompted.   Remove Payment Information from an iTunes Account If you’ve already entered payment information into your iTunes account, and would like to remove it, click Store in the top iTunes menu, and select View My Account. Enter your Apple ID email and password, and click View Account.   This will open your account information.  Click the Edit Payment Information button.   Now, click the None button to remove your payment information.  Click Done to save the changes. Your account will now prompt you to enter payment information if you try to make a purchase.  You could repeat these steps after making a purchase if you do not want iTunes to keep your payment info on file. Conclusion This is a great way to make an iTunes account without entering your credit card, or to remove your credit card info from your account.  Parents may especially enjoy this tip, as they can have an iTunes account on their kids computer or iPod Touch without worrying about them spending money with it. • Visual Studio &amp; TFS 11 &ndash; List of extensions and upgrades

  This post is a list of the extensions I recommend for use with Visual Studio 11. It’s coming up all the time – what to install, where are the download sites, last version, etc etc, and thus I thought it better to post it here and keep it updated. The basics are Visual Studio 11 connected to a Team Foundation Server 11. Note that we now are at Beta time, and that also many live in a side-by-side environment with Visual Studio 2010.  The side-by-side is supported by VS 11. However, if you installed a component supporting VS11 before you installed VS11, then you need to reinstall it.  The VSIX installer will understand that it is to apply those only for VS11, and will not touch – nor remove – the same for VS2010. A good example here is the Power Commands. The list is more or less in priority order. The focus is to get a setup which can be used for a complete coding experience for the whole ALM process. The list of course reflects what I use for my work , so it is by no means complete, and for some of the tools there are equally useful alternatives. Many components have not yet arrived with VS11 support.  I will add them as they arrive.  The components directly associated with Visual Studio from Microsoft should be common, see the Microsoft column. • Error -12 hibernation image. Not enough free memory (sometimes)

  I am having a problem with hibernation in Ubuntu 12.10, it had worked fine in 12.04. When I try and hibernate it sometimes appears to hibernate throws up an error and returns me to the desktop. The error I get is this: PM: Creating hibernation image: PM: Need to copy 375021 pages PM: Normal pages needed: 117957 + 1024, available pages: 110205 PM: Not enough free memory PM: Error -12 creating hibernation image Now I understand what the error means, but it doesn't make sense. My swap file is 5GB and is seldom ever used as I have 4GB of RAM. I know it is recommended to have 1.5 times more swap than RAM etc, but space doesn't seem to be the problem, despite the error. For example, I rarely use more than about 25%-30% of my RAM, yet still have the problem above. Moreover on a fresh boot and login, with no programs open and using only about 12% of RAM, I can get the above error - yet at other times I can hibernate whilst using 25% of my RAM. Also if I keep trying to hibernate, it eventually does after throwing up the above error four or five times. A successful hibernation looks like this: PM: Creating hibernation image: PM: Need to copy 295511 pages PM: Normal pages needed: 95534 + 1024, available pages: 132627 Is there some setting that I need to tweak or something I need to do before hibernating to avoid this problem? I guess the question could be better interpreted as: Is there some way of safely flushing the buffers and the cache before hibernation? Other than attempting to hibernate several times until it is successful! Thanks in advance.

The step for importing the certificate would be same for self-signed and third party certificates (like VeriSign) $JAVA_HOME/bin/keytool -import -v -noprompt -trustcacerts -alias <aliasname> -file <Path to the certificate file> -keystore $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/security/cacerts Here $JAVA_HOME refers to the path of JDK install directory Note: In case multiple certificates are required for establishing the trust, import all those certificates using the same keytool command mentioned above  One can verify the import of the certificate/s by using the below mentioned command $JAVA_HOME/bin/keytool -list -alias <aliasname>-v -keystore $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/security/cacerts When the trust gets established for the SSL communication, specifying the SSL specific settings in the Data Store (via OAM admin console) wouldn't result into the previously seen error (when Certificates are yet to be imported) and the "Test Connection" would be successful.

We've made a lot of strides in taking load off our brains by with good tools (Chrome dev mode/Firebug for web stuff, REPL's for many languages, IDEs), but I'd like my brain to be able to handle a bigger load, as opposed to paring the load down with tools.

• Forensic Analysis of the OOM-Killer

  Ubuntu's Out-Of-Memory Killer wreaked havoc on my server, quietly assassinating my applications, sendmail, apache and others. I've managed to learn what the OOM Killer is, and about its "badness" rules. While my machine is small, my applications are even smaller, and typically only half of my physical memory is in use, let alone swap-space, so I was surprised. I am trying to work out the culprit, but I don't know how to read the OOM-Killer logs. Can anyone please point me to a tutorial on how to read the data in the logs (what are ve, free and gen?), or help me parse these logs? Its job is to restart one of the applications if it dies, so a bit ironic that it is the first to get killed. Tail was monitoring a few logs files. Unlikely to be consuming memory madly. The apache web-server only serves pages to a little old lady who only uses it to get to church on Sundays a couple of developers who were in bed asleep, and hadn't visited a page on the site for a few weeks. The only traffic it might have had is from the port-scanners; all the content is password-protected and not linked from anywhere, so no spiders are interested. Python is running two separate custom applications. Nothing in the logs to suggest they weren't humming along as normal. One of them was a relatively recent implementation, which makes suspect #1. It doesn't have any data-structures of any significance, and normally uses only about 8% of the total physical RAW. It hasn't misbehaved since. The grep is suspect #2, and the one I want to be guilty, because it was a once-off command. The command (which piped the output of a grep -r to another grep) had been started at least 30 minutes earlier, and the fact it was still running is suspicious. However, I wouldn't have thought grep would ever use a significant amount of memory. It took a while for the OOM killer to get to it, which suggests it wasn't going mad, but the OOM killer stopped once it was killed, suggesting it may have been a memory-hog that finally satisfied the OOM killer's blood-lust.

• 501 Error during Libjingle PCP on Amazone EC2 running Openfire

  I am trying to implement Google's Libjingle (version: 0.6.14) PCP example and I am getting a 501: feature not implemented error during execution. Specifically, the error occurs after each "account" has connected, been authenticated and began communicating with the other. An abbreviated log of the interaction is provided at the end. I have set up my own jabber server (using OpenFire on an Amazon EC2 server), have opened all of the necessary ports and have added each "account" to the other's roster. The server has been set to allow for file transfers. My being new to working with servers, I am not sure why this error is occur and how to go about fixing it. Thanks in advance, AeroBuffalo P.S. • What Freeware/Open-Source/inexpensive CAD programs exist for the Mac?

• Do I lose anything by coding in c# and using free online vb.net code convertors?

  The company I work for uses vb.net since there are many programmers who moved up from vb6 to vb.net. Basically more vb.net resources in the company for support/maintenance vs c#. I am a c# coder and was wondering if I could just continue coding in c# and just use the many online free c# to vb.net code convertors. That way, I will be more productive and also be more marketable since there are more c# jobs compared to vb.net jobs. I have done vb6 many years ago and I am comfortable debugging vb.net code. It's just the primary coding language. I am more comfortable in c#. Will I lose anything if I use this approach. (code conversion). Based on what i read online the future of vb.net is really "Dim".   This question already has an answer here: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? 5 answers I have a test website that's hosted on a free plan by Zymic. At the moment I'm typing, it and my site is down. I don't want to let my clients down in the future. It's been down for over 2 days. I thought it was a coding problem at first, and then found out I couldn't connect to my server. Zymic had very good reviews, and its downtime was OK (not high or low), but now I want to change my web host. What should I look for (besides downtime guarantee)? Also, do you have any suggestions that with all the benefits? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
