• What video codecs have most amount of content and thus popular at present/in future?

  Hi, I want to find out if I can get some data on the percentage wise distribution of video content, for different video codecs currently used for video encoding. I know there are different applications/use-case scenarios which have different encoder used but i want to consdier all that and have a overall usage number(%) My guess is(highest to lowest % of content) - H.264(AVC) DivX MPEG2 VP6 Where do H.263, MPEG4, VC-1, RV, Theora, etc. fit in here. How may this look like in future? PS:I would like this to be community wiki to have get wider range of inputs, if someone with privileges can do it for me please. thank you. -AD

• jquery vote up down, request for some help

  I want to make some changes in the following piece of code. The demo of the code can be seen here. http://cyberbuff.noadsfree.com/lab/reddit_votes/ The above example shows calculated number of votes (vote ups - votes down). And when you click on any thumbe, it disappears the thumbs and shows the updated votes. I want to make changes that in begining it shows vote up and vote down separately (which are stored in database separately). and after thumb up or down is pressed, it should not remove the thumbs, but it should show the updated vote up and down separatetly. • What is the most efficient way to encode an arbitrary GUID into readable ASCII (33-127)?

  Dear ladies and sirs. The standard string representation of GUID takes about 36 characters. Which is very nice, but also really wasteful. I am wondering, how to encode it in the shortest possible way using all the ASCII characters in the range 33-127. The naive implementation produces 22 characters, simply because 128 bits / 6 bits yields 22. Huffman encoding is my second best, the only question is how to choose the codes.... Any more ideas? Thanks. P.S. The encoding must be lossless, of course.

  I have an application with some bunch of code like this: errCode = callMainSystem(); switch (errCode){ case FailErr: error("Err corresponding to val1\n"); case IgnoreErr: error("Err corresponding to val2\n"); ... ... default: error("Unknown error\n"); } The values are enum constants. Will it make some sense to have something like: // Error* callMainSystem() ... Some code return FaileErr(); // or some other error // handling code Error* err = callMainSystem(); err->toString(); The Error class may be made singleton as it only has to print error messages. What are the pros and cons of above methods,size is an important criteria as the application needs to be supported on embedded devices as well. P.S: I don't want to use exception handling because of portability issues and associated overheads.

• Joomla article not showing in the frontend but its visible in administrative part.

  I have a very big article to be put into our joomla site. At first I was getting "Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 285487 bytes) in..." . But then I increased the memory_limit in php.ini . And I was able to create the article. Now I can view the article by logging into backend. But the article is not at all visible in the front end. If I click on the menu item pointing to that article, all I can see is a blank page with nothing in it. All other articles in the site are visible properly. Any idea? ps: I have enabled the error reporting to maximum, also ran the site in debugging mode. But saw nothing unusual.

• ASP.NET profile deletion

  We use the ASP.NET profile subsystem to associate key-value pairs of information with users. I am implementing functionality for the deletion of users. I have been using the ProfileManager.DeleteProfile(string userName) method, but I have noticed that this leaves a row in the aspnet_Users table in the aspnetdb database we use to store the profile information. Clearly, I could manipulate the database directly, but I am reluctant to do so. What is the best way to ensure all information assocaited with a user is deleted from the aspnetdb? PS: there is a tantalising Membership.DeleteUser(string userName, bool deleteEverything) method, but this returns a database connection error. A web.config issue?

• How to reduce the number of points in (x,y) data

  I have a set of data points: (x1, y1) (x2, y2) (x3, y3) ... (xn, yn) The number of sample points can be thousands. I want to represent the same curve as accurately as possible with minimal (lets suppose 30) set of points. I want to capture as many inflection points as possible. However, I have a hard limit on the number of allowed points to represent the data. What is the best algorithm to achieve the same? Is there any free software library that can help? PS: I have tried to implement relative slope difference based point elimination, but this does not always result in the best possible data representation. Thanks for your time. -Gowtham

  Hi, I need to create a handover document for a fairly large system consisting of all the stuff you'd expect from a telecom deployment: many servers, database clusters which copy some data between them in specific ways, tons of log files, both off-the-shelf and locally developed software, scripts, network configurations, local know-how, etc. It's really got as many sysadmin-typical elements, as development ones. The target of this document are in the first place sysadmins who take over the day-to-day operation tasks and some problem resolving, and in the second place people who want to learn about the system in general. Is there some place I can learn about how to write something like that? It could just as easily be a 10 page "what's where", as a 500 pages book about "all things telephony". Maybe it should be more than one document really. Please link some useful resources / books I could use for this task. PS: this is intended to be internal only, customer interactions etc. are out of scope here

• Unix - "xargs" - output "in the middle" (not at the end!)

  Hello, example use of "xargs" application in Unix can be something like this: ls | xargs echo which is the same as (let's say I have "someFile" and "someDir/" in the working dir): echo someFile someDir so "xargs" take its "input" and place it "at the end" of the next command (here at the end of echo). But sometimes I want xargs to place its input somewhere "in the middle" of next command. For example: find . -type f -name "*.cpp" -print | xargs g++ -o outputFile so if I had in the current directory files "a.cpp" "b.cpp" "c.cpp" the output would be the same as with the command: g++ -o outputFile a.cpp b.cpp c.cpp but I want to have something like this: g++ a.cpp b.cpp c.cpp -o outputFile Is there a way to do it? P.S.: I need it in some cases, because e.g.: i586-mingw32msvc-g++ -o outputFile `pkg-config --cflags --libs gtkmm-2.4` a.cpp b.cpp c.cpp doesn't work but this one works fine: i586-mingw32msvc-g++ a.cpp b.cpp c.cpp -o outputFile `pkg-config --cflags --libs gtkmm-2.4` Thanks. • Win32: No Window Appears

  I was programming the example code from Frank Luna's book "Introduction to 3D Game Programming with DirectX 10". The code is the first Win32 example in the Appendix A: Windows Programming section. Right now, the program compiles under both VC++ 2008/2010, but no window appears, although the debug session has started and I have to forcefully close it. I have no idea where it is, I'm not using Win32 Console mode, I have closed all other windows and no other IDE or session of VC++ is running. Any idea why this might be happening? PS: I have also checked my Processes. It is indeed running.

• Visual Studio 2008 Navigate Forewards/Backwards Buttons Don't Work As Expected

  I just installed VS2008 on my new Win7 box. I have Navigate Backwards and Navigate Forwards buttons on my tool bar. When I change between documents, I do NOT see a list drop down for each of the buttons like should be seen here after opening multiple documents and switching between their methods: How it should work. Instead, I just see the buttons without drop downs. I find that navigating forwards and backwards doesn't work as it should. I should be able to click in different lines of the code and press the nav back/forwards buttons to jump between lines. This is not the case. Any suggestions? Thanks in advanced. PS - I installed SP1 just to see and nothing changed.

• VS 2010 / Resharper 5 Mouse Behavior

  After upgrading to the above configuration I notice that 1) CTRL-Click on a type highlights the type but doesn't take me to the declaration, 2) Clicking on some closure (ie, like a method) toggles whether it's expanded or collapsed. Since these are both mouse related tasks I figure there is some setting in either VS or R# that I need to change, but I sure can't figure out what it is. Anybody know?   Let's say I have the following structure: abstract class Hand {} class Rock extends Hand {} class Paper extends Hand {} class Scissors extends Hand {} The goal is to make a function (or a method) Hand::compareHands(Hand $hand1, Hand $hand2), which would return the winning hand in a rock-paper-scissors match. That would be very easy with a bunch of ifs, but the point is to have a more robust structure, that's relying on polymorphism rather than on procedural code. P.S. this is done in actual production code, if someone is asking. This isn't some sort of challenge or homework. (It's not really rock-paper-scissors, but you get the point).

• Proper way to structure a Sync Framework DAL

  I am creating a WPF app that needs to allow users to work in a temporary disconnected state and I plan to use a Local Database Cache. My question's are about my data access layer. Do you typically create the whole DAL to point at the Cache or both and create a switching mechanism? Is Entity's a good way to go for my DAL against the Cache? I am used to L2S but my understanding is that I can't use that against SQLCE, correct? Thanks! PS: Any good resources out there for using Sync, Linq, and WPF ALL TOGETHER? Tutorials, videos, etc?

• Where is the windows app installed + .NET + VS2005

  I deployed a windows application in the following website http://StagingServer/MyProgs/MPP/ on my intranet site, using the Publish Wizard of VS 2005... I accepted all defaults (including Offline support). My users were also able to install the same from the path specified. But when I try to find out the exact location of the EXE in the client, it is not pointing anywhere. I also tried a file search but in vain. Initially I thought the application is running from the server itself, but we were able to start the app, even when the server is down (ofcourse it takes more time to search for updates initially). Ps : The app is showing even in control panel... Raja

Currently, I have a method that accepts two parameters and each parameter value is stored in first and second hashmap. I have to iterate first hash then second to get values. I think there must be a good way to do it but I don't know :( P.S: there could be some errors in above code as this is just an example to explain my problem. Each iterator is a method in original program and accept one parameter. I couldn't copy past real time functions as they are HUGE !

Why should I use them with try-catch(-finally) statement ? Is there any meaningful reason ? Is it only because that some people think that code is hard to read ? • Return popupmenu selection in MATLAB using one line of code

  I have a GUI which uses a selection from a popupmenu in another callback. Is there a way to return the selected value of the popupmenu in only one line without creating any temporary variables? I've tried several solutions, but I've only managed two lines with one temporary variable: Three lines: list=get(handles.popupmenu1,'String'); val=get(handles.popupmenu1,'Value'); str=list{val}; Two lines: temp=get(handles.popupmenu1,{'String','Value'}); str=temp{1}{temp{2}}; Can anyone shave it down to one? PS, It's a dynamic menu, so I can't just use get(handles.popupmenu1,'Value') and ignore the string component altogether.)

• Care to be taken when serving static content (JS, CSS, Media) from different domain?

  Let me try to explain by example. Say website is hosted at example.com (NOT www.example.com). In order to serve static content cookie-free, I've chosen to use a different domain example-static.com. Now, lets consider that my static content is currently served like this: http://example.com/js/script.js http://example.com/css/style.css http://example.com/media/image.jpg ** Now I create a CNAME record aliasing example-static.com to my main domain i.e. example.com so that the static content is served as such: http://example-static.com/js/script.js http://example-static.com/css/style.css http://example-static.com/media/image.jpg ** Is that all I have to do? Will all browsers execute JavaScript files and load web fonts without any security concerns? OR should I be using some .htaccess rules to modify header information and the like? PS: It would be great if you can provide what rules should be added, if need be.

• How to escape/strip special characters in the LaTeX document?

  We implemented the online service where it is possible to generate PDF with predefined structure. User can choose a LaTeX template and then compile it with an appropriate inputs. The question we worry about is the security, that the malicious user was not able to gain shell access through the injection of special instruction into latex document. We need some workaround for this or at least a list of special characters that we should strip from the input data. Preferred language would be PHP, but any suggestions, constructions and links are very welcomed. PS. in few word we're looking form mysql_real_escape_string for LaTeX
