• Find Date From Non Contiguous Ranges

  I am looking to find an best way to find a date from date ranges that may or may not be contiguous (I am trying to avoid a cursor, or a heavy function if possible). Lets say I have hotel guests that come and go (check in, check out). I want to find the date that a certain guest stayed their 45th night with us. The database we use records the data as so: Create Table #GuestLog( ClientId int, StartDate DateTime, EndDate DateTime) Here is some data Insert Into #GuestLog Values(1, '01/01/2010', '01/10/2010') Insert Into #GuestLog Values(1, '01/16/2010', '01/29/2010') Insert Into #GuestLog Values(1, '02/13/2010', '02/26/2010') Insert Into #GuestLog Values(1, '04/05/2010', '06/01/2010') Insert Into #GuestLog Values(1, '07/01/2010', '07/21/2010') So far I can only think of solutions that involve functions with temp tables and crazy stuff like that, I feel like I'm over thinking it. • scrolling a readonly cell in NSTableview?

  I have a table that the user should not be able to edit directly (although user actions may cause changes). One column may contain a string too long for any reasonable size cell, so to see everything there, the user needs to scroll the cell (using arrow keys, for example). If I make either the column or cell not editible, I loose the ability to scroll the cell. If I make it editable, of course, I loose the ability to keep the user from changeing it. (I'm using NSArray controller and a couple of NSObject controllers to get from the model to the table view using bindings. Binding compliance via @property(copy) and @synthesize.   i have a class named cv,and a class named university, and each user that completes his cv, should choose a University he studyes at. My problem is: one student can study at one or 2 or three universities, or may be a user that is not student. I need to take this data into a form, and i use ModelForm. The data from the Cv class, and from the University class in the same form, and the user can add one or more universities, or no university. (in the same form) How should i do it? Should i use ModelForm? if i have a foreign key in the CV class, and the user is not a student (so he is at zero universities), i may get an referencial integrity error. thanks a lot

• How do I view Visual Studio BuildLog.htm files without cutting and pasting into an external browser

  This may or may not be specific to VS2005 (as that is the version I'm referring to for this question). I find often the case is that I see this in the Output panel inside Visual Studio 2>Build log was saved at "file://c:\\vsdll_example\MyExecRefsDll\Debug\BuildLog.htm" Now, since that looks and smells like a URL, I would have thought that I could simply left mouse click on it, or left mouse double-click on it, and a browser window of some sort would be displayed. No, that doesn't work. So, to view it, I have to cut and paste the "file://bla/bla/bla" part into an external window. Is there a way to set up Visual Studio to allow me to browse to that file directly, or view it inside Visual Studio IDE, or something to that effect, without the extra fiddling with cutting and pasting? Or is there some type of keybinding I'm not aware of? Thanks, bg

  I am parsing a very large file of records (one per line, each of varying length), and I'd like to keep track of the number of bytes I've read in the file so that I may recover in the event of a failure. I wrote the following: string record = myTextReader.ReadLine(); bytesRead += record.Length; ParseRecord(record); However this doesn't work since ReadLine() strips any CR/LF characters in the line. Furthermore, a line may be terminated by either CR, LF, or CRLF characters, which means I can't just add 1 to bytesRead. Is there an easy way to get the actual line length, or do I write my own ReadLine() method in terms of the granular Read() operations?

  I recently came in contact with this interesting problem. You are given a string containing just the characters '(', ')', '{', '}', '[' and ']', for example, "[{()}]", you need to write a function which will check validity of such an input string, function may be like this: bool isValid(char* s); these brackets have to close in the correct order, for example "()" and "()[]{}" are all valid but "(]", "([)]" and "{{{{" are not! I came out with following O(n) time and O(n) space complexity solution, which works fine: Maintain a stack of characters. Whenever you find opening braces '(', '{' OR '[' push it on the stack. Whenever you find closing braces ')', '}' OR ']' , check if top of stack is corresponding opening bracket, if yes, then pop the stack, else break the loop and return false. Repeat steps 2 - 3 until end of the string. This works, but can we optimize it for space, may be constant extra space, I understand that time complexity cannot be less than O(n) as we have to look at every character. So my question is can we solve this problem in O(1) space?

  I'm building a question and answer application on top of twitter and I'm hitting some snags because I'm inevitably dealing with two classes of users: authenticated and non-authenticated. The site enable users to give points to other users, who may or may not be authenticated, and I want to create a site-wide point system where the application stores and displays this information on their profile. I want to save this point data to the user because that would be faster and more efficient but non-authenticated users aren't in our system, we only have the twitter handle. So instead we display the points in our system like this: @points = point.all( :select => "tag, count(*) AS count", # Return tag and count :group => 'tag', # Group by the tag :order => "2 desc", :conditions => {:twitter_handle => params[:username]}) Is there a better way to do this?   I'm implementing a CORBA like server. Each class has remotely callable methods and a dispatch method with two possible input, a string identifying the method or an integer which would be the index of the method in a table. A mapping of the string to the corresponding integer would be implemented by a map. The caller would send the string on the first call and get back the integer with the response so that it simply has to send the integer on subsequent calls. It is just a small optimization. The integer may be assigned dynamically on demand by the server object. The server class may be derived from another class with overridden virtual methods. What could be a simple and general way to define the method binding and the dispatch method ?

The messages table looks like this: Messages - Id (PK, Auto-increment int) - UserId (FK, Users.Id) - FromUserId (FK, Users.Id) - ParentMessageId (FK to Messages.Id) - MessageText (varchar 200) I'd like to show messages on a page with each 'parent' message followed by a collapsed view of the children messages. Can I use the GROUP BY clause or similar construct to retrieve parent messages and children messages all in one query? Right now I am retrieving parent messages only, then looping through them and performing another query for each to get all related children messages. • Passenger problem: "no such file to load" -- /config/environment

  I've been researching this one and found references to similar problems here and there, but none of them has led to a solution yet. I've installed passenger (2.2.11) and nginx (0.7.64) and when I start things up and hit a Rails URL, I get an error page informing me of a load error: no such file to load -- /path/to/app/config/environment From what I've found online this appears to be some sort of a user/permissions error, but I've tried all the logical fixes: I've made sure that /config/environment.rb is not owned by root, but by a webapp user. I've tried setting passenger_default_user, I've tried setting passenger_user_switching off. I've even tried setting the nginx user, though that shouldn't matter much. I've gotten some differing results, but nothing's actually worked. I'm hoping someone may have the magical combination of settings and permissions for this. I may try backing down to an earlier version of Passenger, because I've never had this issue before; it's been a little while since I set up Passenger though. Thanks for any suggestions.

• I'm getting reports that my app is draining the battery, but only on HTC Incredible.

  Has anyone else noticed behavior specific to the HTC Incredible that might result in an app keeping the device awake and busy? I've received reports that my app is responsible for keeping the device awake and draining the battery, but only from HTC Incredible users. My app responds to a number of Intents that might be related. It has a service that starts on boot, and it also responds to changes in network connectivity. I do use a WakeLock, but I'm careful to release it when I'm done processing, and the WakeLock times out after a couple minutes whether I'm done or not. I've heard that the Incredible may have some connectivity problems, or that some of them do. Could it be that the network is going up and down frequently, triggering my app? Any other ideas? I've asked a user to send me their logs with aLogCat. If they're willing, that may help narrow down the cause.

  Hi i need to pass a long list of Ids from one page to another, i was thinking of using querystring but taking in consideration that the number of ids to be passed may reach 300 i think is not a good idea. an option from my understanding may be the use of session, this seems to me an optimal solution in my case but on the other hand I can certainly clear the session when the user performs a certain action and the list of ids is not longer needed, but if the user leaves the page without performing any action i want to clear the session, how can i do it? If multiple users are using the same functionality do i need the session's items to be confused or the session is for a single user? I am working in asp.net c# Thanks

  We have a small .Net program that we sell with individual licenses. The individual licenses are enforced by registering a key file that is generated using information from the machine used to install the program (MAC address, etc.) Now, we have a customer request for a site-wide license, such that they can deploy to as many machines on their site as possible. From the technical POV I'm not sure what are the usual approaches for this; our old approach won't work since we can't map the license to any machine-specific information. Any suggestions? A few more details: the program is a client-side program that includes an Office Add-In the machines to be installed on may or may not have internet access we aren't restricted to .Net-only approaches, I'm just looking for a general idea of how this sort of thing is usually handled

• Inconsistent values in network switch throughput values

  Quite simple, I have a network switch with SNMP, and need to calculate the throughput of the switch port, so simply I use ifOutOctets. We transfer a file which is 145MB and if we use the total from the start, subtracted from the value at the end then the value is : 158901842 I simply can't get the value to match, or be anything similar to what the real transfer is. I understand that there may be excess traffic etc but I just can't get it to be anywhere similar (the server being tested has no traffic when this is not running) We have tried for a long time and suspect there may be an issue with the recording on the HP switch, do you have any suggestions, or how should we be calculating it? • What are the new features in Java 7

  What is the most official Java 7 feature list? I find very little useful information regarding this on the official JDK 7 site. Apart from that I can only find blogs with people summarizing "some" of the new features. However, some of these blog entries are old and some of them claim that these features "may or may not" be included in Java 7. Can anyone provide a list of features that will definitely be included in Java 7? I would also very much like to know the estimated release date. Will it be backwards compatible with my existing Java EE 6 stuff. That is, will I be able to switch seamlessly using EJBs, JPA2, Glassfish 3 and so on. The feature I am mostly interested in is Closures, so I'll happily switch to Java 7 as soon as a stable release comes out. Thanks!

• Is a Multi-DAL Approach the way to go here?

  Working on the data access / model layer in this little MVC2 project and trying to think things out to future projects. I have a database with some basic tables and I have classes in the model layer that represent them. I obviously need something to connect the two. The easiest is to provide some sort of 'provider' that can run operations on the database and return objects. But this is for a website that would potentially be used "a lot" (I know, very general) so I want to cache results from the data layer and keep the cache updated as new data is generated. This question deals with how best to approach this problem of dual DALS. One that returns cached data when possible and goes to the data layer when there is a cache miss. But more importantly, how to integrate the core provider (thing that goes into database) with the caching layer so that it too can rely on cached objects rather than creating new ones. Right now I have the following interfaces: IDataProvider is used to reach the database. It doesn't concern itself with the meaning of the objects it produces, but simply the way to produce them. interface IDataProvider{ // Select, Update, Create, et cetera access IEnumerable<Entry> GetEntries(); Entry GetEntryById(int id); } IDataManager is a layer that sits on top of the IDataProvider layer and manages the cache interface IDataManager : IDataProvider{ void ClearCache(); } Note that in practice the IDataManager implementation will have useful helper functions to add objects to their related cache stores. (In the future I may define other functions on the interface) I guess what I am looking for is the best way to approach a loop back from the IDataProvider implementations so that they can access the cache. Or a different approach entirely may be in order? I am not very interested in 3rd party products at the moment as I am interested in the design of these things much more than this specific implementation. Edit: I realize the title may be a bit misleading. I apologize for that... not sure what to call this question.
