• Ruby on rails generates tests for you. Do those give a false sense of a safety net?

  Disclaimer: I have not used RoR, and I have not generated tests. But, I will still dare to post this question. Quality Assurance is theoretically impossible to get 100% right in general (Undecidable problem ;), and it is hard in practice. So many developers do not understand that writing good automated tests is an art, and it is hard. When I hear that RoR generates the tests for you, I get very skeptical. It cannot be that easy. Testing is a general concept; it applies across languages. So does the concept of code contracts, it is similar for languages that support it. Code contracts do not generate themselves. The programmer must add the requirements and the promises manually, after doing some thinking about the algorithm / function. If a human gets it wrong, then the tools will propagate the error. Similarly with testing - it takes human judgement about what should happen. Tests do not write themselves, and we are far from the day when a business analyst can just have a conversation with a computer and tell it informally what the requirements are and have the computer do all the work. There is no magic ... how can RoR generate good tests for you? Please shed some light on this. Opinions are ok, for this is a community wiki. Thanks!

• Excluding a script from the general UrlRewrite rules

  Hi, I have following rewrite rules for a website: RewriteEngine On # Stop reading config files RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} .*/web.config$ [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} .*/\.htaccess$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.+)$ - [F] # Rewrite to url RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !^(/bilder_losning/|/bilder/|/gfx/|/js/|/css/|/doc/).* RewriteRule ^(.+)$ index.cfm?smartLinkKey=%{REQUEST_URI} [L] Now I have to exclude a script including its eventually querystrings from the above rules, so that I can access and execute it on the normal way, at the moment the whole url is being ignored and forwarded to the index page. I need to have access to the script shoplink.cfm in the root which takes variables tduid and url (shoplink.cfm?tduid=1&url=) I have tried to resolve it using this: # maybe?: RewriteRule !(^/shoplink.cfm [QSA] but to be honest, I have not much of a clue of urlrewriting and have no idea what I am supposed to write. I just know that above will generate a nice 500 error. I have been looking around a lot on stackoverflow and other websites on the same subject, but all I see is people trying to exclude directories, not files. In the worst case I could add the script to a seperate directory and exclude the directory from the rewriterules, but rather not since the script should really remain in the root. • People not respecting good practices at workplace

  Hi There are some major issues in my company regarding practices, procedures and methodologies. First of all, we're a small firm and there are only 3-4 developers, one of which is our boss who isn't really a programmer, he just chimes in now and then and tries to do code some simple things. The biggest problems are: Major cowboy coding and lack of methodologies. I've tried explaining to everyone the benefits of TDD and unit testing, but I only got weird looks as if I'm talking nonsense. Even the boss gave me the reaction along the lines of "why do we need that? it's just unnecessary overhead and a waste of time". Nobody uses design patterns. I have to tell people not to write business logic in code behind, I have to remind them not to hardcode concrete implementations and dependencies into classes and cetera. I often feel like a nazi because of this and people think I'm enforcing unnecessary policies and use of design patterns. The biggest problem of all is that people don't even respect common sense security policies. I've noticed that college students who work on tech support use our continuous integration and source control server as a dump to store their music, videos, series they download from torrents and so on. You can imagine the horror when I realized that most of the partition reserved for source control backups was used by entire seasons of TV series and movies. Our development server isn't even connected to an UPS and surge protection. It's just plugged straight into the wall outlet. I asked the boss to buy surge protection, but he said it's unnecessary. All in all, I like working here because the atmosphere is very relaxed, money is good and we're all like a family (so don't advise me to quit), but I simply don't know how to explain to people that they need to stick to some standards and good practices in IT industry and that they can't behave so irresponsibly. • iPhone User Interface Design

  Hey guys, I've just had a nagging question for a while regarding iPhone app user interfaces. For example, consider WeightBot's User Interface. I am wondering, how are most of these user interfaces created? In general, of course. Is there a way to simply design controls (that is, the images) in a program like Photoshop, then use that 'skin' for controls in UIKit? I realize that there are some controls that are probably created by the programmer (custom controls), but I'm referring to the ready-made ones that come in UIKit. In other words, is the concept similar to 'splicing' web site designs? Where a designer draws out the design of the website in something like Photoshop, and then it is cut up into pieces which can be applied to form the actual website? I know this can be done for UIButtons, can this also be done for other controls, and is this how it is usually done? Or perhaps this is done with Core Animation? I've heard this from time to time, so does this mean that the User Interfaces are 'hard-coded'? Or is Core Animation only use for the 'effects', such as applying the glowing effect to the numbers in WeightBot? If there are any resources you can point me to I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

• Can you review my Perl rewrite of Cucumber?

  There is a team working on acceptance testing X11 GUI application in our company, and they created a monstrous acceptance testing framework that drives the GUI as well as running scenarios. The framework is written using Perl 5, and scenario files look more like very complex Perl programs (thousands of lines long with procedural-programming style) than acceptance tests. I recently learned Ruby's Cucumber, and generally have been using Ruby for quite a lot of time. But unfortunately I can't just shove Ruby to replace Perl because the people who are writing all of this don't know Ruby and it's quite certain that they wont want "this" kind of interruption. So to bring Ruby's Cucumber a bit closer to their work, I rewrote it using Perl 5. Unfortunately I am really not a Perl programmer, and would love to get a code review and to hear suggestions from people who both know Perl and Cucumber. • Contact-to-hire from the perspective of the headhunter agency?

  I operate a small IT consulting firm. One of my clients has expressed an interest in having an ASP.Net programmer on-site at their location for a six-month contract, with an option to hire. I've never really operated my company as a body shop (renting out talent for the long term) and an unfamiliar with how to price my quote. Assume I were to bring on a new developer as a 1099'ed contractor and then contract that person out to my client for the duration of the project. If I'm billing my client $X per hour for this developer's time, what should I be compensating this developer? $X/2 per hour? What's the typical ratio? If the client decides to hire this person at the end of the contract, what should I be compensated? Is it a flat finders fee, or maybe a function of the developer's annual salary? Would there be any advantage to actually hiring the person as a 1040'd employee rather than a 1099 contractor even if I can't offer him benefits? I know other body shops (like Robert Half) do this and never understood why.

• Natural language processing - Ideas for beginner's projects

  Hi guys, I am a beginner in NLP and NLTK. I am very interested in NLP and hence joined a weekend course on AI in some local institution, which requires me to do a project for completion of the course, and I decided to do it in NLP. The problem is,the instructor is not good at all for this course (According to me she is just a charlatan) (or may not be very interested in teaching as this is her last batch here after which the institute is going to send her out). So I am stuck in a situation where where I got to finish this project in a month to one and half months period, but as a naive person in the field I am feeling it very difficult to comprehend the things required to decide on project. (Also, as I am working full time, I am not finding enough time to dedicate on this). I considered using NLTK toolkit in python for the project for following reasons. (1) Python is famous for ease of use, rapid prototyping and very active community (considering very short span of time I have, and as I am a C programmer by profession, I need a language that I can learn fast and is simple to use). (2) NLTk has good review, and extensive documentation and a very active community. So the problem is what project should I take up, so that I can learn something and will be able to finish project in time. (I know almost nothing in NLP, don't even know what exactly corpora is... :( ) So, please suggest me some topics that I should consider for the project. Regards, MicroKernel :)

• What was Tim Sweeney thinking? (How does this C++ parser work?)

  Tim Sweeney of Epic MegaGames is the lead developer for Unreal and a programming language geek. Many years ago posted the following screen shot to VoodooExtreme: As a C++ programmer and Sweeney fan, I was captivated by this. It shows generic C++ code that implements some kind of scripting language where that language itself seems to be generic in the sense that it can define its own grammar. Mr. Sweeney never explained himself. :-) It's rare to see this level of template programming, but you do see it from time to time when people want to push the compiler to generate great code or because they want to create generic code (for example, Modern C++ Design). Tim seems to be using it to create a grammar in Parser.cpp - you can see what look like prioritized binary operators. If that is the case, then why does Test.ae look like it's also defining a grammar? Obviously this is a puzzle that needs to be solved. Victory goes to the answer with a working version of this code, or the most plausible explanation, or to Tim Sweeney himself if he posts an answer. :-)

• Proper way to implement IXmlSerializable?

  Once a programmer decides to implement IXmlSerializable, what are the rules and best practices for implementing it? I've heard that GetSchema() should return null and ReadXml should move to the next element before returning. Are these true? And what about WriteXml: should it write a root element for the object or is it assumed that the root is already written? How should child objects be treated and written. Here's a sample of what I have now. • Java and tomcat vs ASP.NET and IIS

  Until recently I'd considered myself to be a pretty good web programmer (coming up for 10yrs commercial experience on a variety of e-commerce, static and enterprise applications). I'm self taught and have always used the Microsoft product stack (ASP, ASP.NET)... My applications are always functional, relatively bug free, but have never been lightening quick. As a frequent web user I always found this to be the norm... how fast are the websites from the big tech players (eBay, Facebook, Microsoft, IBM, Dell, Telerik etc etc) - in truth none are particularly fast. I always attributed this to "the way things are with web apps"... ...then I cam across a product called Jira from atlasian and this has stopped me in my tracks... This application is fast, and I mean blindingly fast.. too fast to time the switches between pages, fully live content, lots of images and data and cross references etc etc... I run this on an intranet, with a large application DB, and this is running on a very normal server (single processor, SATA HDD, 8GB RAM). Am I missing something?? Are my programming techniques that bad?? I am wondering if this speed gain is down to it being written in Java and running on Tomcat. Does anyone have any benchmarks to compare JSP / ASP or Tomcat / IIS??? Thanks, Mark NOTE: this isn't a blatant plug for Jira. I'm also trying to create a form for it that shows the student name as a field that can not be changed, the only thing that can be changed here is the finalGrade. I'm guessing that, since the field is "disabled", the value is not being reported in the POST and for reasons unknown to me the instance isn't being used in its place. I'm a new Django/Python programmer, but quite experienced in other languages. I can't believe I've stumbled upon such a difficult to solve problem in my first significant django app. I figure I must be missing something. Any ideas?

• Decisions in teaching someone else to program: language selection

  My friend would like for me to guide her into learning programming. She's already proven enormous aptitude for thinking like a programmer but is scared of the idea of programming since in her mind it's relegated to some magical realm accessible only to smart people and trained computer scientists (ironically, I am neither but that's beside the point). My main question is the age-old and irritating question: which language should I chose? I've limited it down to these: PHP: dead simple to start with and I remember enough of the language to answer all novice questions. However, I can think of a million reasons why I wouldn't recommend this as a first language. The most diplomatic of which is that there's no desktop app option to which I would feel comfortable subjecting a novice. Python: supposed to be wonderful for beginners and generally everything I've heard about it screams that this is the correct choice. That's the problem: everything I've heard about it. I don't know it yet and have a lot of projects going on right now so I don't feel like learning it yet -- but I'm going to be the tech-support when any little thing goes wrong. I know there are tons of online resources but in the frustration of the moment, it's always going to be just me. C#: this is the language I'm most comfortable with so I know I can be good tech support. I also love this language and its versatility and community. The big drawback here is that I remember when I first learned it after doing mainly PHP, Perl, and JavaScript and I found the experience overwhelming. You are simultaneously learning: programming concepts, C# syntax, strong typing, OOP, and a complex powerful IDE with a bazillion options and buttons all over it.

  Hi, I'm trying to create a GUI (WPF) Library where each (custom) control basically wraps an internal (third party) control. Then, I'm manually exposing each property (not all of them, but almost). • GTK implementation of MessageBox

  I have been trying to implement Win32's MessageBox using GTK. • An alternative to reading input from Java's System.in

  I’m working on the UVa Online Judge problem set archive as a way to practice Java, and as a way to practice data structures and algorithms in general. They give an example input file to submit to the online judge to use as a starting point (it’s the solution to problem 100). Input from the standard input stream (java.lang.System.in) is required as part of any solution on this site, but I can’t understand the implementation of reading from System.in they give in their example solution. It’s true that the input file could consist of any variation of integers, strings, etc, but every solution program requires reading basic lines of text input from System.in, one line at a time. There has to be a better (simpler and more robust) method of gathering data from the standard input stream in Java than this: public static String readLn(int maxLg) { byte lin[] = new byte[maxLg]; int lg = 0, car = -1; String line = “”; try { while (lg < maxLg) { car = System.in.read(); if ((car < 0) || (car == ‘\n’)) { break; } lin[lg++] += car; } } catch (java.io.IOException e) { return (null); } if ((car < 0) && (lg == 0)) { return (null); // eof } return (new String(lin, 0, lg)); } I’m really surprised by this. It looks like something pulled directly from K&R’s “C Programming Language” (a great book regardless), minus the access level modifer and exception handling, etc. Even though I understand the implementation, it just seems like it was written by a C programmer and bypasses most of Java’s object oriented nature. Isn’t there a better way to do this, using the StringTokenizer class or maybe using the split method of String or the java.util.regex package instead?

• Google Contacts API - No Redirection

  Hello there, I am currently working on Contact Importer web app (in PHP) so I will be able to grab email address from a user's account on Gmail, Yahoo, etc and use them for my own evil purposes. Just kidding, my web app is very friendly. I thought I would start with Google. I found they have a fantastic little API called Google Contacts API which lets a programmer, like myself, to access a user's contacts. After a couple of hours of struggling and throwing shitty code together, I ran into a few road-blocks. My main question is this: Is there any way that I can have a user provide their username and password for Gmail on my website and have my code retrieve the contacts without that nasty redirection to a Google login page? It's kind of ruins the whole flow of my web app. I've looked into AuthSub, and gotten that to work, but of course the catch is that you have to redirect the user to obtain the access token. It looks like OAuth will have this same catch. The one ray of hope I have is the ClientLogin method of authentication. Again, there is a catch, sometimes Google throws you a CAPTCHA instead of the auth token. Again, the user flow is ruined. I've noticed that our good ol' friends over at Twitter have it working just fine. Does anyone know how they do it? Thanks!

• Programming R/Sweave for proper \Sexpr output

  Hi I'm having a bit of a problem programming R for Sweave, and the #rstats twitter group often points here, so I thought I'd put this question to the SO crowd. I'm an analyst- not a programmer- so go easy on me my first post. Here's the problem: I am drafting a survey report in Sweave with R and would like to report the marginal returns in line using \Sexpr{}. For example, rather than saying: Only 14% of respondents said 'X'. I want to write the report like this: Only \Sexpr{p.mean(variable)}$\%$ of respondents said 'X'. The problem is that Sweave() converts the results of the expression in \Sexpr{} to a character string, which means that the output from expression in R and the output that appears in my document are different. For example, above I use the function 'p.mean': p.mean<- function (x) {options(digits=1) mmm<-weighted.mean(x, weight=weight, na.rm=T) print(100*mmm) } In R, the output looks like this: p.mean(variable) >14 but when I use \Sexpr{p.mean(variable)}, I get an unrounded character string (in this case: 13.5857142857143) in my document. I have tried to limit the output of my function to 'digits=1' in the global environment, in the function itself, and and in various commands. It only seems to contain what R prints, not the character transformation that is the result of the expression and which eventually prints in the LaTeX file. as.character(p.mean(variable)) >[1] 14 >[1] "13.5857142857143" Does anyone know what I can do to limit the digits printed in the LaTeX file, either by reprogramming the R function or with a setting in Sweave or \Sexpr{}? I'd greatly appreciate any help you can give. Thanks, David

• Wysiwyg with image copy/paste

  First, I understand that an image cannot be "copied" from a local machine into a website. I understand that it must be uploaded. I am a web programmer, and am familiar with common web wysiwyg tools such as TinyMCE and FCKEditor. My question is if there exists a program or web module or something of the sort that works will perform an automatic upload of images for a wysiwyg. I have a client that is constantly complaining about not being able to copy/paste documents with images from MS Word into a wysiwyg to create content on their website. I have looked into TX Text Control (http://labs.textcontrol.com/) and was looking into a possibly flash wysiwyg that could upload the file automatically behind the scenes. I don't know if this exists, and google did not much help me in my search, so I thought I would ask other coders. I am open to any sort of server technology, or browser requirements. I am looking for some browser based tool instead of an application tool such as Dreamweaver or otherwise. If no good solution to the problem exists, I am willing to accept that at this point. Note: This was a request from a client, and to me it seemed rather unreasonable. • visual studio 2008 vs 2010 Pro unmanaged code

  Hi, I'm a C++ programmer, I use Visual Studio 2008 Professional, only unmanaged code. I'm thinking of buying VS 2010 Pro. I'm confused, I don't know what are differences between those two. I know that, in plus, it has tr1 included. When I started using 2008 edition I was very pleased to see f.e. unit testing support but all new features are only for managed code. The C++ debugger in 2008 is very good, better than 2003 edition one. I would't like to buy a new tool and discover that I gained nothing and lost some functionality ( because f.e. something was moved to higher version). Once upon a time I switched from very good VS6 to VS 2003.Net and imagine what, after some time I discovered that Pro has no support for code optimalization. It is wonderful how Microsoft makes money. I wouldn't like to experience something like that again. What do you think, what can you recommended?

• Choosing a Java Web Framework now?

  we are in the planning stage of migrating a large website which is built on a custom developed mvc framework to a java based web framework which provides built-in support for ajax, rich media content, mashup, templates based layout, validation, maximum html/java code separation. Grails looked like a good choice, however, we do not want to use a scripting language. We want to continue using java. Template based layout is a primary concern as we intend to use this web application with multiple web sites with similar functionality but radically different look and feel. Is portal based solution a good fit to this problem? Any insights on using "Spring Roo" or "Play" will be very helpful. I did find similar posts like this, but it is more than a year old. Things have surely changed in the mean time! EDIT 1: Thanks for the great answers! This site is turning to be the best single source for in-the-trenches programmer info. However, I was expecting more info on using a portal-cms duo. Jahia looks goods. Anything similar?

• How Random is System.Guid.NewGuid()? (Take two)

  Before you start marking this as a duplicate, read me out. The other question has a (most likely) incorrect accepted answer. I do not know how .NET generates its GUIDs, probably only Microsoft does, but there's a high chance it simply calls CoCreateGuid(). That function however is documented to be calling UuidCreate(). And the algorithms for creating an UUID are pretty well documented. Long story short, be as it may, it seems that System.Guid.NewGuid() indeed uses version 4 UUID generation algorithm, because all the GUIDs it generates matches the criteria (see for yourself, I tried a couple million GUIDs, they all matched). In other words, these GUIDs are almost random, except for a few known bits. This then again raises the question - how random IS this random? As every good little programmer knows, a pseudo-random number algorithm is only as random as its seed (aka entropy). So what is the seed for UuidCreate()? How ofter is the PRNG re-seeded? Is it cryptographically strong, or can I expect the same GUIDs to start pouring out if two computers accidentally call System.Guid.NewGuid() at the same time? And can the state of the PRNG be guessed if sufficiently many sequentially generated GUIDs are gathered?

• PHP, jQuery and Ajax Object Orientation

  I'm a fairly experienced programmer getting my head around PHP and Ajax for the first time, and I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how to incorperate object oriented PHP into my ajax webapp. I have an admin page (admin.php) that will load and write information (info.xml) from an XML file depending on the users selection of a form on the admin page. I have decided to use an object (ContentManager.php) to manage the loading and writing of the XML file to disk, i.e : class ContentManager{ var $xml_attribute_1 ... function __construct(){ //load the xml file from disk and save its contents into variables $xml_attribute = simplexml_load_file(/path/to/xml) } function get_xml_contents(){ return xml_attribute; } function write_xml($contents_{ } function print_xml(){ } } I create the ContentManager object in admin.php like so <?php include '../includes/CompetitionManager.php'; $cm = new CompetitionManager() ?> <script> ...all my jquery </script> <html> ... all my form elements </html> So now I want to use AJAX to allow the user to retrieve information from the XML file via the ContentManger app using an interface (ajax_handler.php) like so <?php if(_POST[]=="get_a"){ }else if() } ... ?> I understand how this would work if I wasn't using objects, i.e. the hander php file would do a certain action depending on a variable in the .post request, but with my setup, I can't see how I can get a reference to the ContentManager object I have created in admin.php in the ajax_handler.php file? Maybe my understanding of php object scope is flawed. Anyway, if anyone can make sense of what I'm trying to do, I would appreciate some help!

While I don't expect to use continuations all over my code anytime soon, I wish I knew a few cases where they can be appropriate. • Project Euler: Programmatic Optimization for Problem 7?

  So I would call myself a fairly novice programmer as I focused mostly on hardware in my schooling and not a lot of Computer Science courses. So I solved Problem 7 of Project Euler: By listing the first six prime numbers: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, and 13, we can see that the 6th prime is 13. What is the 10001st prime number? I managed to solve this without problem in Java, but when I ran my solution it took 8 and change seconds to run. I was wondering how this could be optimized from a programming standpoint, not a mathematical standpoint. Is the array looping and while statements the main things eating up processing time? And how could this be optimized? Again not looking for a fancy mathematical equation..there are plenty of those in the solution thread. • How do I change an attribute in an HTML table's cell if I know the row and column index of the cell?

  I know nothing about jQuery but am an experienced C++ programmer (not sure if that helps or hurts). I found jQuery code that gives me the row and column index of a cell in an HTML table when a user clicks on that cell. Using such row-column index numbers, I need to change an attribute's value in the previously selected cell and in the cell just clicked. The index numbers are produced and saved with this code: var $trCurrent = 0; // Index of cell selected when page opens var $tdCurrent = 0; // i.e., previously selected cell $(document).ready(function () { $("td").click(function () { // How toclear previously selected cell's attribute here?
