• Can a motherboard be faulty even if it's getting power and so are components hooked up to it?

  Sort of a followup to this question. The mobo's getting power, the lights are on. The GPU fan is spinning (it doesn't use auxiliary power, it's only connected to the mobo). I'm not getting any video signal, and it's not the video card (nor monitor) that's faulty, so I'm suspecting mobo or CPU (possibly RAM?) and I'm trying to pinpoint which part is at fault. Is the motherboard a candidate for being broken or is it not very likely if it's getting power and powering other components? The CPU fan is getting power as well.

• How to cleanup tmp folder safely on Linux

  I use RAM for my tmpfs /tmp, 2GB, to be exact. Normally, this is enough but sometimes, processes create files in there and fail to cleanup after themselves. This can happen if they crash. I need to delete these orphaned tmp files or else future process will run out of space on /tmp. How can I safely garbage collect /tmp? Some people do it by checking last modification timestamp, but this approach is unsafe because there can be long-running processes that still need those files. A safer approach is to combine the last modification timestamp condition with the condition that no process has a file handle for the file. Is there a program/script/etc that embodies this approach or some other approach that is also safe? Incidentally, does Linux/Unix allow a mode of file opening with creation wherein the created file is deleted when the creating process terminates, even if it's from a crash?

• Why does Resource Monitor in windows 7 show half my memory as "Hardware Reserved"?

  Does anyone know why in Windows 7 Resource Monitor shows that I have 8 GB of RAM installed on my computer, but I only have 3.2 GB available as 4.8 GB are in "Hardware Reserve". I researched this issue and tried going into msconfig and making sure that in the boot options the number of processors and max memory options were turned off. I also opened the computer up and reseated each of the memory sticks while clearing out any dust that was in there. Some info on the system I am using: OS: Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit Edition CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9750 Memory: 4 X 2GB DDR2 memory Motherboard: MS-7548 (Aspen) Any help would be much appreciated.

• How can I let my users set PHP.ini settings for wordpress?

  I set up a wordpress server from a fairly standard Ubuntu 9.10 for a class and they're constantly running into problems with the default PHP.ini settings. First memory settings were too low, then the file upload limits were too small, etc. And more concerning was a wordpress wide blank page that I suspect was killed for ram consumption but turning on php errors in php.ini didn't reveal anything! I'm not familiar with shared hosting, but I feel there's a way such places allow users to edit such things without needing me to intervene and restart Apache.

  We restart an apache server every day because RAM usage reaches its limit. Though of value See this serverfault answer, I dont think lowering the MaxClients in the apache configuration is a solution to the unknown root problem. Can you make sense out of the below data?   I have an ASUS N53S that I mainly bought for its RAM capacity. (I run a lot of VMs.) But as a bonus, it came with a fancy ATI video card. So I decided to install GTA 4 and plug it into a big monitor and settle down for some casual mayhem. But after about 5 minutes, it goes into hibernation! What gives? Since I was using an external monitor and didn't need the keyboard (using an XBox controller) I closed the lid on the laptop. Gaming is compute-intensive, so my GPU and CPU were both working hard and generating heat. Closing the lid interfered with cooling. Since I have the laptop configured to hibernate when I press the power button, the heat-triggered shutdown caused hibernation.

  What is needed to make a GPU fully fed by CPU? Comparing their flops/s is enough? For example, if i could manage to make a very old(pentium-3) CPU with one of Nvidia-Fermi GPU, it would not be able to fed the gpu with data per sec. What is the criteria to fit CPU to GPU exactly when OpenCL or some similar work needed? Of course RAM and BUS will be chosen in a similar way but how exactly? Assume each GPU-core will calculate a sqrt and a division and an adding for 100 times for every itearation. Thanks.

• Windows 7 slowing down during hard drive activity

  Sometimes when normally using my PC, it will (seemingly) randomly slow down, and maybe sometimes even freeze for several seconds. During this slow down period, it looks like a (I don't know which drive it is) hard drive is constantly being written to. During the last slow down, I started Windows's Ressource Monitor and found out that the System process was writing up to 10MB/s to a drive (I suspect it's the system drive, C:\, but I don't know for sure). I'm not doing anything unusual (at least, I don't think I am), and most of the time, it will work normally, but, as I said, it just randomly slows down for some times. Any ideas on what might be causing this and how I can prevent this from happening again? (I have a triple-core processor and 4GB of RAM. My system drive is a WD Caviar Black 500GB, my secondary, 'data' drive is a Samsung drive, which I don't know the model number of, but I can look it up. I can also post my full PC specs if needed.)

• Configure redis to not have everything in memory?

  I like redis because it lets me do operations on data structures. I wanted to see what would happen if i were to put more data into redis then i have for ram. So i wrote a loop that inserted 30k bytes repeatedly and set maxmemory 100MB. I figure it would stay at 100mb. It kept growing. Past 1gb then past 2gb. Suddenly it crashed because i ran the 32bit version. Now... i dont understand what the point of maxmemory is? I am using the windows version so maybe its ignored. Does redis have to have everything in memory? If i have a site (on linux) with a 10gb database and 512mb on the machine will redis work? I don't need it to be amazingly fast i just prefer to modify data in it then sql (although i hope it is still faster then mysql)

• Keyboard glitches for some when Ctrl key is pressed

  I'm having some problems with my keyboard, if I press the Ctrl key it glitches for some time. For example, if I press Ctrl and press Tab while it's still glitched the computer shuts down as if i pressed the Power On/Off button. If I press a it "presses" Alt, A and a symbol I can't remember, if I recall correctly it's a currency symbol. If I press Ctrl again it "presses" the ' key. I'm using Windows 8 Single Language 64 bits with a ABNT2 keyboard. The processor is a Intel Celeron G530 with 2 GB of RAM.

• Why Windows Media Center (Vista 32-bit) unable to record TV Series?

  I can record individual shows just fine, but trying to setup the recording of a Series throws an error (something like, "unable to schedule, try restarting Media Center", pops up in the bottom right of the screen). Trying to access the "Other Showings" menu causes Media Center to crash ("check for a solution online" dialog comes up). The machine is a fresh reinstall of 32-bit Windows Vista from the HP recovery CDs, plus all Microsoft updates and service packs. Hardware: HP s3220n, AMD X2 5000+, 2GB RAM, 300GB free space on disk. Media Center came bundled. The "Media Center update for Vista" failed to install (it says, not appropriate for my computer). Any ideas? Thanks

• How to increase the volume gain when viewing online flash video?

  When watching online Flash videos on Youtube, Dailymotion, etc... sometimes the videos are recorded at low volume. The thing is that, I have a HP Notebook with good enough audio volume, but when I watch these "low volume" videos the sound level is really low, even when I have the volume at 100%. So I am looking for a way to increase the volume gain (like VLC player where you can increase it to 200%), BUT while watching it live on Youtube... that is, I don't want to download the video on my PC. Is there a software that can do that? Maybe an advanced flash video player that integrates to browser? or some other software to increase the volume gain overall on my laptop? My Specs: HP Pavilion Notebook, Audio: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC (integrated), Vista 64-bit, 4 GB RAM, etc.....

• What is the best way to configure the number of workers in Apache?

  My site receives a lot of traffic for 2 hours during the day (2000 hits per minute). The rest of the day receives less traffic(500e hits per minute). I have been experimenting with the MaxClients and MaxSpareServers values but I still get some downtime during peek hours. How can I calculate the best values for my configuration based on the amount of ram that I have ? • How to identify who is using Hardware Reserved Memory in Windows 7

  I run Windows 7 x86 Home Premium. I have an installed physical memory of 4 GB, out of which, 2.96 GB is usable (My Computer Properties). I checked the memory usage using Resource Monitor and found 3036 MB / 4096 MB is available. I noticed that 1060 MB is unavailable since it is reserved by some "Hardware component(s)". I would like to know which hardware component is using this 1060 MB. Is there any way or tool to identify this? Note: I know that Windows 7 Home Premium x86 supports a maximum of 4GB RAM.

• memtest86+ crashing on server

  we have a few DELL 1950 servers. 1 of this servers has CentOS6.3 and its randomly rebooting so I suspected it was hardware. (no log generated) the other 4 servers do not randomly reboot. We passed memtest86+ on the 5 servers, and on 3 of them memtest86+ crashes (displaying an odd and colorful screen, like if a video card failed) Although I tested old memtest86 (not +), and all servers did not crash. I also tested other RAM testers utilities, no tool failing. have any of you guys experience this? thanks

• Error 5A - Internal CPU Error

  So I built myself a pc for the first time. The machine has been running properly, and without issue, since March of this year. Today after an hour or so of gaming the machine shutdown without warning. Any attempts to reboot have been unsuccessful. I have managed to get it to post, twice, but it doesn't get as far as the OS before it shuts off again. I pulled the second video card so I could see the error code LED and it appears to be showing 5A which matches to "Internal CPU Error". Am I looking at a failed CPU or is this a symptom of another issue? Any feedback you can provide is most appreciated. • Apache stops serving requests when connections increase

  The values for MaxClients, ServerLimit etc parameters are quite high (4000). Available RAM on the server is high too (~8G). Load average remains below 1 on a 24 core CPU. But when the number of visitors on the website increase apache just stops serving requests. The apache error log is blank and access log shows no more requests coming in. Restarting apache makes it work again until the number of requests increases again. Any ideas where to start looking? UPDATE Getting the below errors in apache error log on running it with LogLevel Debug [info] server seems busy, (you may need to increase StartServers, or Min/MaxSpareServers), spawning 32 children, there are 479 idle, and 1027 total children

• Why won't Windows use the other CPU cores?

  In Windows Task Manager the Performance tab shows the first CPU maxed out, the other 7 just idling along with the occasional spike. What gives? More info: I've got 8GB and only 4.5GB are being used. The Processes tab has no indication of any process hogging processing power. In fact System Idle Process is 98-99. When I program stuff and have like 8 to 12 applications going (several directly unrelated to programming of course) my computer slows to a crawl.   I have fibre broadband with speeds up to 38mbs, my Dell D600 has its max 2gb ram and has an ATI Mobility RADEON 9000 4xAGP 32mb card in it...Its TV support it says is NTSC or PAL in S-video and composite modes with a 7-pin mini-DIN connector (optional S-video to composite video adapter cable) and a vga port which i am using at the moment... The laptop runs Windows XP, an 80g HD with only windows + necessary updates and anti virus software on it..... There is HDMI on the TV, but not the laptop Fairly slow moving and close up pictures arent too bad, but when the movment is fast(a shot on goal) or in the distance, I cant see the ball and the images go out of focus.

  We are having a terminal server ibm x3650 with 8 gb of RAM. On many occasions, at least once in a day, we get the error "The instruction at "0x7c8199b2" refrenced memory at "0x9ddc2ade". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program. Click on CANCEL to debug the program. I have surfed very many sites, microsoft included, but none of them have been able to give conclusive solution for ending this problem. When we press on ok or cancel, then our ERP application (VB-MS SQL) starts to work normally. till such time the message is there, all our reports are hanged (Business Objects reports). We have already installed all the drivers of printers on the TS. Can anyone help?

  I am facing boot loop. My backend Linux works flawlessly, But the Zygote and System server does not workout. I can still use ADB and LIVE cat .. ps show that both Zygote and system_server process are there, But boot animation remains forever !! I have : 1 Wiped Data + Cache Partition 2 System Partition has been RESTORED.. There is NO PERMISSION problem...
