• Favouriting things in a database - most efficient method of keeping track?

  I'm working on a forum-like webapp where I'd like to allow users to favourite an item so that they can keep track of it, and also so that others can see how many times an item's been favourited. The problem is, I'm unsure on the best practices for databases, which includes this situation. I have two ideas in my head on how to do this: Add an extra column to the user table and store things like so: "|2|5|73|" Add an extra table with at least two columns, one for referencing an item, the other for referencing a user. I feel uncomfortable about going for the second method as it involves an extra table, and potentially more queries would be required. Perhaps these beliefs aren't an issue, as I have little understanding of databases beyond simply working with table layouts and basic queries.

• C# method generic params parameter bug?

  Hey, I appears to me as though there is a bug/inconsistency in the C# compiler. This works fine (first method gets called): public void SomeMethod(string message, object data); public void SomeMethod(string message, params object[] data); // .... SomeMethod("woohoo", item); Yet this causes "The call is ambiguous between the following methods" error: public void SomeMethod(string message, T data); public void SomeMethod(string message, params T[] data); // .... SomeMethod("woohoo", (T)item); I could just use the dump the first method entirely, but since this is a very performance sensitive library and the first method will be used about 75% of the time, I would rather not always wrap things in an array and instantiate an iterator to go over a foreach if there is only one item. Splitting into different named methods would be messy at best IMO. Thoughts?

  I have a generic question that I will try to explain using an example. Say I have a table with the fields: "id", "name", "category", "appearances" and "ratio" The idea is that I have several items, each related to a single category and "appears" several times. The ratio field should include the percentage of each item's appearances out of the total number of appearances of items in the category. In pseudo-code what I need is the following: For each category find the total sum of appearances for items related to it. For example it can be done with (select sum("appearances") from table group by category) For each item set the ratio value as the item's appearances divided by the sum found for the category above Now I'm trying to achieve this with a single update query, but can't seem to do it. What I thought I should do is: update Table T set T.ratio = T.appearances / ( select sum(S.appearances) from Table S where S.id = T.id ) But MySQL does not accept the alias T in the update column, and I did not find other ways of achieving this. Any ideas?

  I am trying to create a dynamic hyperlink that depends on a value passed from a function: {% for item in field_list %} <a href={% url index_view %}{{ item }}/> {{ item }} </a> <br> {% endfor %} The problem is that one of the items in field_list is "Hockey Player". The link for some reason is dropping everything after the space, so it creates the hyperlink on the entire "Hockey Player", but the address is http://126.0.0.1:8000/Hockey How can I get it to go to http://126.0.0.1:8000/Hockey Player/ instead?

  I'd like to clean up some directories after my script runs by deleting certain folders and files from the current directory if they exist. Originally, I structured the script like this: if (Test-Path Folder1) { Remove-Item -r Folder1 } if (Test-Path Folder2) { Remove-Item -r Folder2 } if (Test-Path File1) { Remove-Item File1 } Now that I have quite a few items listed in this section, I'd like to clean it up.   Flex has an issue with hyphens in xml. I need to generate an xml object with hyphens in the attribute for a Google Checkout implementation. I can get away with: var xml:XML = <item-description/>; and var xml:XML = <item-description the-name="foo"/>; but what I need to do is set the value of an attribute like this: var timestamp:String = methodToGetMyTimestampString(); var xml:XML = <item-desc/>; xml@start-date = timestamp; but I can't do that. Since flex doesn't like the hyphens, I don't know how to get or set attributes with hyphens in the name.

I'd like to re-factor as much as possible to another thread, but I'm not sure where I should start. Is it OK to put everything (1-4) to the separate thread?

  We are a network of Mac computers. I would like to send email addresses to colleagues with links to files on network locations. I made the following applescript: tell application "Finder" set uuu to URL of the first item of (get the selection) set the clipboard to uuu end tell which puts the URL of the currently selected file into the clipboard, which can then be pasted into the message (using the Add Link menu item), providing, for example: file://localhost/Volumes/Commerciale/Clienti/ unfortunately these links do not work. If I select Go To Folder from the menu item, I can get to the folder using an afp:// type url. Is there any way to get this via applescript like I do with url above? Thanks

  Hi, I'm working on a pure css menu that consists of four levels Level 1 and 2 are a dropline menu in style Levels 3+ are dropdown menus When you hover over a level 1 menu item, the level 2 menu displays directly below menu item you are currently hovering over. However if there are lots of menu items on level 2 then the level 2 menu goes off the screen and you see a horizontal scroll bar. What I want to happen is that if the menu is going to go off the screen I want it to get pushed to the left. For example, if the menu was 300px long, but there was only 250px between the level 1 menu item and the edge of the page, then the level 2 menu should not be placed directly under the level 1 parent, instead it should be 50px to the left. I use a nested unordered list for the menu.

  How should I implement items that are normalized in the Database, in Object Oriented classes? In the database I have a big table of items and a smaller of groups. Each item belong to one group. It should also be easy to do calculations with a bunch of items. The group information like VAT are needed for the calculations. I will write an Item class, but do I need a Group class? and if I need it, should I keep them in a global location or how do I access it when I need it for Item-calculations? Is there any design pattern for this case?

  Hello, I am trying to write a macro for Building my application, kicking off an external tool, and ataching the debugger to that external tool. Everything is working except for the building. It builds, but it is not blocking the thread so the external tool gets kicked off before it can finish. Is there a way I can run ExecuteCommand and wait for the thread to finish? Imagine: @Html.ActionLink(item.title, "Singlet", new { id = item.blog_id }) produces http://[url]/[controller]/Singlet/[id] But what if I want to suffix some more arbitrary data at the end? For example: http://[url]/[controller]/Singlet/[id]/#comments To jump to the comments div.   How could I implement a sub item where the item would have a parent to that of the same item. For example, I have a database that holds tasks/todos. Each todo has a title(TEXT), completed(INTEGER [1 if true, 0 if false]), and due date(TEXT) column. I would like to add functionality to have subtasks, where a task could possibly have a parent task. How would I implement this in SQLite for Android? NOT IN SQL! So no foreign keys (triggers are allow, though)! Could I just have a separate table (subtask) and have a foreign key trigger to link subtask(INTEGER parent) to task(INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT _id)? Or should I add a column to my original task table(INTEGER parent)? How could I implement this?

  Hi All, Does any one know, or is it possible to do one time payment, with paypal in android ? Consider the senario. Buyer purchases installs free application. Clicks on paypal module and makes in-app payment, purchases feature successfully. Buyer deletes application. All information including the feature purchase enty in database is deleted. Buyer reinstalls the application. Here is the catch, if he wants to use the feature he will have to do a re-purchase. Which I wann to avoid in my application. This is taken care in iPhoen in-app purchase. That is if a buyer has already purchased an feture or in-app item, and if he trys to repurchase it (item has been set to one time payment) , the in-app purchase transaction will succeed without the user actually having to repay for the item. Is there an solution for this can anyone help.
