• Cannot mount Android phone in Ubuntu and sync with Banshee

  I can't get my LG Optimus One to sync with Banshee. I read somewhere that the root needs to have an empty file called '.is_audio_player'. I did that and it still doesn't mount. I ran dmesg however and it appears that the card is unmounting before I even have a change to run Banshee. This clever hack dumps the credit card reading in favor of snagging the audio from old music reels. Evan Long was curious about whether the through-the-headphones interface of the Square Reader could be used to read audio data off old magnetic recordings. • Live CD / Live USB much faster than full install

  I've observed it on both laptops I own! HP Compaq nx6125 and Ubuntu 11.04 x64 - somewhat solved Lenovo Thinkpad T500 and Ubuntu 11.10 x64 - help needed! I'm still struggling with the Thinkpad to get performance level similar to that of 10 y.o. laptops... All in all a really serious issue with multiple versions of Ubuntu that renders computers with perfectly compatible hardware unusable, as far as out of the box experience is concerned. Troubleshooting resultant issues seems to be a hard case even for users with some experience with installing graphics drivers. EDIT: I can't really post additional details. Two different ubuntu versions, two laptops, two different set of graph. drivers (OS vs ATI prop.) - all with the same symptoms. Also I can't stress enough how massive the performance degradation is compared to a healthy system. For that reason I ask for input from people who may know roughly what are we dealing with here. I can post more details if we were to focus on my current Thinkpad T500. In that case my current system details: Lenovo Thinkpad T500 Ubuntu 11.10 x64 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (also see the "What I have already tried" section about Intel graphics tested) ATI Catalyst 11.10 drivers OCZ Agility 3 SSD but! same with the default driver for ATI the card same with the prop. driver for the ATI card from Jockey (Additional drivers applet) What I have already tried: 0. Switching to Intel integrated card (Intel GMA 4500M HD) with the default driver - same effects = may indicate not driver related problem but a problem with something of global influence like e.g. nomodeset or other I don't even know about. (What you can read above) ATI Catalyst 11.10 and radeon.modeset=0 boot parameter + disabled Wait for VBlank. Unity 2D Ubuntu 10.04 LTS tested (ubuntu-10.04.3-desktop-i386.iso): Both live USB and installed version blazing fast! (on the default drivers - without even installing the proprietary fglrx drivers). re2 a) seems to give me the only significant results (still poor) - perfect Unity elements performance with the same crawling stuttering/lagging when dragging windows around. re2 b) this happens often http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b68/Bucic/ubuntuforumsorg/Screenshotat2011-10-28083140.png re2 c) Sometimes I am able to witness a normal performance when dragging a window around but only for a second or two. When I try to shake it longer it starts to lag and it will keep lagging like that with an increased probability of what you see in the sshot in point re2 b). re2 d) I can't establish the radeon.modeset=0 influence though. Once it seems to work be smooth with it, the other time - without it. Really can't tell.

This PDF indicates that it is possible to connect up to four external monitors to the laptop. The information is Windows only. I was planning to disable the NVidia card, since I have read that Linux support for Optimus is not good. Questions: Has anyone set up three monitors on NVidia hardware? Has anyone set up three monitors using Intel HD 3000? Can I expect it to work out of the box, or are there tricks I need to be aware of?

• Forked-daapd with alternative soundcard

  I am trying to configure forked-daapd on my computer, and everything goes well except that in configuration file I can not set a new value for the line corresponding to soundcard. This is the default code in the config file: #card = "default" I want to use a soundcard called "DG2", which is the soundcard no.1 and has a first device that ALSA recognizes as no.0. So, I change the line to the following: card = "hw:DG2,0" I restart the daapd service and the next time I play a file through iTune remote, I get a message in my server log file saying that it can not play the file because the device is busy. Any change in the device name will return a different error, saying that the device does not exist. I am pretty sure no other uses this external device, and I don't understand why I get this message. I have tried hwplug as well, with no result.

  Is there any way to make my graphics card (ATI x800) work with tvout? I know there are no proprietary drivers for this card only the opensource ones. • How to program for constraints/rules

  First the background, during interviews in the past, many times I have been asked to design some or other variation of card game as programming puzzle, and I have tried to design it in OO way, but I have never been satisfied with my solutions. However it was not until recently that I realized that I had been approaching the problem from the wrong direction. Specifically I was trying to solve the problem by modeling individual card as an object. Problem with this is individual cards don't have any non-trivial intrinsic behavior and therefore are not suitable (or primary) candidate as objects. What is interesting and important about cards are rules and constraints, such as there could be only four suits, or only thirteen cards in each suit. Of course, then there are any number of rules for games. So my questions are Are there any idioms/constructs/patterns to program for rules & constraints. How many in 1 can be applied in conjunction with OO paradigm.

• Listen to Local FM Radio in Windows 7 Media Center

  If you have a supported tuner card and connected FM antenna, you can listen to your favorite local over-the-air FM stations in Windows 7 Media Center. Before the FM radio option will be available in Windows Media Center, you’ll need to have a TV or Radio tuner card installed and configured. If you have a TV tuner card installed, you may already have a Radio tuner as well. Many TV tuner cards also have built in FM tuners. Open Windows Media Center, scroll the “Music” and over to “Radio.” Click on “FM Radio.”   The radio will turn on and you’ll see the current station number listed in the white box. Just below are standard “Seek” and “Tune” buttons, as well as “Preset” options. Tuning works just like a typical FM radio. Click on the (-) or (+) buttons to “Tune” or “Seek” up and down the dial. If you already know the frequency of the station, enter the numbers using the numeric keypad on the remote control or keyboard. To save the current station you’re listening to as a preset, click on the “Save as Preset” button. Type in a custom name for your preset station and click “Save.”   Once you set your presets, they will also be available on the main FM Radio screen. The transport controls at the bottom of the screen also allow you to control Volume, Pause, Play, Skip back, and Skip forward. Fast Forward and Rewind, however, are not supported.   This is a nice option if you’d like to listen to your local FM favorites on your computer, especially if those stations aren’t available online. • DVI+HDMI out, at startup only HDMI is available

  I have my computer next to my hdtv. The main screen is connected via DVI while the tv is connected via HDMI. If I start the computer without the HDMI plugged in, everything is ok: I see the login screen and sound is output through analog out. But if the HDMI is plugged in before I start the computer, only the tv gets an image (the login screen), the main screen is black or at some times purple, but even after login the main screen is black. Also sound is still output through analog out. Not sure whether it's a hw issue, or an Ubuntu issue, or a combined hardware/Ubuntu compatibility issue (Sandy Bridge). This is my setup: Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot (64bit) ASUS P8H67-M LE Intel Core i3-2100 I don't have any custom video settings, my main screen is recognized properly when HDMI is not plugged in at startup. • Is gstreamer the best encoder for vorbis or is there a better encoding engine I should use?

  I have sound juicer installed and I want to rip to vorbis.ogg. Is gstreamer the best encoder for vorbis or is there a better encoding engine I should use. The default gstreamer profile is audio/x-raw-float,rate=44100,channels=2 ! vorbisenc name=enc quality=0.5 ! oggmux I am going to raise the quality to 0.7 but thats all nothing if gstreamer isn't the best encoder. Any suggestions for high quality ripping? Edit: a good answer to this will also be the top search result in google for "best vorbis encoding engine". Double Edit: It appears oggenc itself is the best encoder which rules out using sound juicer to rip cd's as it uses gstreamer. I have installed oggenc and am testing the command ripper abcde. Found a good configuration for it here oggenc config for abcde

• Anyone know how to get an LTSP image working with VIA VX855 chipset?

  I'm running an LTSP server on Ubuntu 11.10 and can load the i386 image via PXE boot on a VirtualBox VM just fine. However, when I PXE boot a Dell FX130 thin client on the LTSP network the login screen ends up being a white screen with a bunch of wavy black lines going up and down it. The 11.10 splash screen displays just fine as the image is booted, then I get a "INVALID CARD NUMBER" message, then a black screen, then finally the white screen with wavy lines. I'm not sure if the "INVALID CARD NUMBER" message has anything to do with the issue, but in the end the white screen with wavy lines makes me think it's a video driver problem. On the LTSP server, I chrooted into /opt/ltsp/i386 and made sure xserver-xorg-video-openchrome was installed. I did notice that no xorg.conf exits in /etc/X11 though.

• How to mount an external Soundcard during startup?

  I have an external sound card (Soundblaster XFi HD) connected to my Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit. that won't show up automatically after booting. After each boot process I need to plug the card out of the USB port and reconnect it, then it is found by the system and automatically used. I would like to either have it connected automatically during the boot process or at least have a little script or something which I can use after booting so that I don't have to manually plug the device off and on. Please note that I'm a total noob. If you don't mind please tell me the procedure step by step. Also, if I need to get some information via the terminal I'd need to be told the precise command to get it.

• Optical Illusion Freezes Water In Place [Video]

  This clever optical illusion uses sound frequency and a digital camera to “freeze” water in time and space. YouTube user MrBibio explains the hack: Creating the illusion of a static flow of water using sound. Of course this isn’t my idea and plenty more refined examples already exist. I tried this same experiment years ago but using a strobe light, but it’s harsh on the eyes after a while and hard to video successfully. It only dawned on me shortly before making this that for video purposes, no strobe light is required. This is because the frame rate and shutter of the camera is doing a similar job to the strobe. The speaker-as-frequency-generator model is definitely easier on the eyes than similar experiments that rely on high-speed strobes. • Skype, green screen, no microphone

  I have issues with skype using my brand new System 76 Galago Ultrapro, running Ubuntu 13.04. I installed Skype through ubuntu software centre (after allowing Canonical partner stuff), but it won't work, the video is a green screen, and it won't connect to the microphone. The webcam works when using Cheese, and the microphone appears to work in general (it shows sound levels when I go to the Input tab under the Sound settings). I tried to fix the green screen issue using this command: $ echo -e '#!bin/bash n LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype' | sudo tee /usr/local/bin/skype sudo chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/skype as suggested here: http://debianhelp.wordpress.com/2012/09/28/to-do-list-after-installing-ubuntu-13-04-aka-raring-ringtail-operating-system/ but no luck. • Error on restarting networking :SIOCSIFFLAGS

  I have a sever with 2 network cards, an internal IP on one card (eth0) and external IPs (aliased) on the other card (eth1). I lost connection the public network and I tried to restart networking with /etc/init.d/networking restart and got the error "SIOCSIFFLAGS: cannot assing requested IP and Failed to bring up eth1". I even added the IPs in the interfaces file but still got an error on restarting. I could not ping my default gateway. A work around was to add ifconfig eth 0 x.x.x.x route -add default gw x.x.x.z I could then connect to the public network. What could be the issue here?

• Recording Topics manually and automatically

  When you are recording UPK topics, the default mode for recording is manual recording, where you tell the system when to record each screen shot. This mode allows you to take the exact screen shot you need. However, it does get a bit tedious when you are recording long topics, especially if you forget to take a few screen shots. In UPK 3.5, a new version of recording was introduced - Automatic Recording. It was designed to simplify the recording process by automatically capturing screen shots as you perform your transaction. If you haven't experimented with Automatic Recording, I'd recommend you give it a try - it might make your recording life easier. If you are recording with sound, you can also narrate your topic while recording it. To turn on Automatic Recording: 1. In Tools/Options, there are two recorder tabs. The first tab, under content defaults, includes settings that you may want to share between developers, like whether keyboard shortcuts are automatically captured. 2. The second tab is the one that contains the personal preferences, like screen shot capture key and whether to record automatically or manually. On this tab, choose the option for Automatic Recording. 3. Save the settings. Note that this setting will NOT impact content defaults; this is for your user only. When you launch the recorder, you will notice a slightly different message with guidance on how to start and stop automatic recording. Once you start recording, the recorder window is hidden until the end of the recording session to allow you to capture your transaction. In the task tray, there is a series of icons that let you know that you are capturing content. You can pause the recording, as well as set and view your sound levels if you are using sound. A camera appears during each screen capture to help you know when the system is capturing a screen shot, and a context indicator appears to show the recognition. With automatic recording, you can let the system capture the necessary screen shots. It may provide a more natural recording experience, and is probably easier for the untrained developer. On the other hand, you have a bit more control with manual recording on which screen shot appears, but it also means you have to remember to capture the screen shot. :) We'd be interested in hearing which type of recording you do, and any rationale on why you made that choice. • Acer Revo (ION platform) + Maverick + 5.1 surround over HDMI

  I've had a turbulent relationship with my media centre box. Every upgrade I perform on it seems to bring a brand new set of audio issues (the opposite of my desktop where things seem to get better and better). It's a Acer Revo 3600. That's basically an low-end Intel Atom chip with a Nvidia 9400M onboard. On paper that's perfect for something like a media centre. But having just upgraded to Maverick, the sound properties box only wants to offer me stereo sound over HDMI. The exact setup goes: Revo - Onkyo AV receiver - LG TV. The Onkyo box strips off the audio (supporting 7.1 -- though we're only using 6 speakers) and feeds the video onto the TV. I'd like to get to a point where Ubuntu thinks it's doing 5.1 over HDMI, upmixing stereo to 6ch and supporting DTS/AC3 (through Boxee). I've had this working before but it's frankly been a bit of a hacktastrophe. The audio chip is recognised as Nvidia MCP79/7A HDMI in alsamixer if that helps.

• Ubuntu 12.10 Skype cannot use Web Cam Microphone

  This is making me crazy. After upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, Skype 4.1.0.20 cannot use my Logitech Web Cam microphone anymore, it keeps using the front panel microphone. I can record correctly from the web cam microphone using the sound recorder the web cam microphone is selected in the sound settings I have tried using pavucontrol I have even shut down pulseaudio and set the web cam microphone device in the skype options manually No matter what, Skype will keep recording using the front panel microphone. Everything was working fine with Ubuntu 12.04 before I upgraded to 12.10. Update: the webcam icon is grayed during calls, even tough everything looks ok in the video options . This makes me think skype has some problems in fully recognizing my web cam.

• Cannot control the fan on a Sony Vaio laptop

  I've got Sony Vaio laptop and my fan is on all the time, though the temperature on the video-adapter is always over 60°?. As I've googled, vaiofand does not support VPC-EA series. Is there anything I can do with that or I need another laptop? I'm using the following graphics card: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series] though the problem is not with the graphics card. I've mentioned its temperature as the highest (64°C now btw). Seems like the notebook is always overheated and I cannot control the fan speed to make it cooler. And yes, I'm using the proprietary driver ATI/AMD FGLRX graphics driver. I'm using Kubuntu 11.04.

• Bastion unexpectedly exits when I move my cursor

  I downloaded the Humble Indie Bundle V, mostly because my friend told me about how great Bastion was. When I first installed it, I was getting the seemingly common "black screen" error that most people got (fixed that half with this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11992661). But I also have an error where every time I move my cursor, in any direction, any amount, the game closes instantly. I can use the keyboard no problem, but without fail, every time I move my mouse, it crashes. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Has anyone encountered anything like this before? I am worried it may be a hardware issue, but hoping someone might be able to help me out. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Studio 1558. Graphics card is the stock Intel graphics card, running on 4 GB of RAM.

  I installed Ubuntu 10.10 today and have had mouse problem since. Symptoms: At some arbitrary point in time (frequency: 2-3 times per hour), the mouse and keyboard stops working for ever(may be). I start System monitor, I found out network was shutdown just before mouse freeze. Some time my keyboard keep typing one key. For example:77777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777.....(it keep typing for 20 sec) I found out a script just solve the freeze problem:(I hit Powerbutton) -----------------/etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh------------------------ event=button[ /]power action=/usr/sbin/fix_mouse.sh -----------------/usr/sbin/fix_mouse.sh------------------------ rmmod psmouse modprobe psmouse Yesterday I install Ubuntu 10.04 FAILED also have mouse problem. When I switch back to Windows XP. The network card is down. It kept connecting and disconnecting 1 time per sec.
