  What does O, if indeed it is a Oh (As in the letter O) not the number Zero (0) mean? I think the n would be number, but I'm not sure as I'm not a 'real' computer programmer, just a hobbyist. And log would be logarithmic function, but I only know that because of smarter people then I have told me this, while never really explaining what a logarithm is. So please, in plain English, explain what this is, and the differences between the two (such as their applications.

  I'm trying to create a vertical toggle switch control for the iPhone (along the lines of UISwitch but vertical sliding). I was wondering whether an existing control already existed or if there are any good tutorials that explain the basics of creating custom controls for the iPhone. Currently I've tried using affine transforms to create the vertical switch from a basic UIswitch, and it works except that the slider is too small compared to the slider track, thus I'm looking for information on writing custom controls. Any direction is much appreciated.

  I'm confused about the correct way of using asynchronous socket methods in C#. I will refer to these two articles to explain things and ask my questions: MSDN article on asynchronous client sockets and devarticles.com article on socket programming. My question is about the BeginReceive() method. The MSDN article uses these two functions to handle receiving data: private static void Receive(Socket client) { try { // Create the state object. Now my questions are: What is the point of passing a state to the BeginReceive method if we're only working with a single socket? Is it to avoid using a class field? It seems like there's little point in doing it, but maybe I'm missing something. How can the state parameter help when dealing with multiple sockets? If I'm calling client.BeginReceive(...), won't all the data be read from the client socket? The devarticles.com tutorial makes it sound like in this call: m_asynResult = m_socClient.BeginReceive (theSocPkt.dataBuffer,0,theSocPkt.dataBuffer.Length, SocketFlags.None,pfnCallBack,theSocPkt); Data will be read from the theSocPkt.thisSocket socket, instead of from the m_socClient socket. In their example the two are one and the same, but what happens if that is not the case? I just don't really see where that last argument is useful or at least how it helps with multiple sockets. If I have multiple sockets, I still need to call BeginReceive on each of them, right?

I think the System.getProperty("user.name") won't be secure enough? ("user.name" seems to be got from environment variables, so I can't rely on that, I think?) Question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/390150/authenticating-against-active-directory-with-java-on-linux provides me the authentication for given name+pass but I'd like to authenticate based on the Windows logon? For the Active Directory access, the LDAP would probably be the choise? I'm not totally sure if I'm asking the right questions but hopefully somebody has some ideas to forward me on.

• web.config overrides app.config...why?

  Hi, I have to DLLs: one with a web.config, another one with app.config I moved the connection strings from web.config to app.config so that it can be used by other DLLs. Now, when I call ConfigurationManager.GetSection("SomeSection") , the application looks for a web.config, when it should be looking for the app.config. It doesn't make sense why it does it because web.config is in a separate DLL. Can anybody explain this please?

  While importing a .png file in Flash CS3, i noticed that it automatically gets resized. It gets imported smaller than its original size. Im importing it to the stage and not inside any symbol. • Ubuntu: What gcc to use when crosscompiling for the STM32 (Cortex-M3)?

  Hi I'm trying to get started with the STM32 (Cortex-M3) and my plan is get this working from Ubuntu (9.04 / AMD64). To start with I got the Olimex stm32-h103 header board and the Olimex ARM-USB-OCD jtag, and on to of that I will probably use OpenOCD, gcc and Eclipse. But right now I'm looking into what version of gcc to use and how to setup that to be able to crosscompile the code. There seem to be some arm projects out there but I don't know what to start with, can somebody push me in the right direction? Thanks Johan Update: There seems almost to be what I want from codesourcery, but they seem to focus on IA32 and not AMD64. However in the supported devices I find the Cortex-M3 ARM EABI, ARM M-profile Simulator -mcpu=cortex-m3 -mthumb Update: There is a possibility to install IA32 on AMD64, so maybe the marked answer is obsolete already.   Hi All, I am working on a project which involves reusing as well as migrating some of the existing MFC code to C#. The current code in MFC, creates some threads and uses ::PostthreadeMessage() and ON_THREAD_MESSAGE(msg,func) for inter thread asynchronous communication through messages. ::PostthreadeMessage() - sends a message to a particular thread id. ON_THREAD_MESSAGE(msg,func) - calls the function(func) when a message(msg) is received. Since i am not much aware of the threading interfaces in C#, i tried to search for similar API's in C#, but was not able to find any. It would be great, if somebody can help me in finding the appropriate functions for this purpose in C# Thanks, Harsha

  Hey, I am working on nesting of sheet metal parts and am implementing Minkowski Sums to find No Fit Polygons for nesting. The problem is I can give only convex sets as input to the code which calculates Minkowski sums for me. Hence I need to break a concave polygon, with holes into Convex sets. I am open to triangulation also, but I am looking for a working code on VC++ (6.0). I am slightly running short on time as my whole code is ready and just waiting for input in the form of convex sets. I would really appreciate if somebody with prior experience can help me in this. I have gone through other posts but did not find anything matching to this. I am a student of mechanical engineering and really dun have much idea about computer languages.   I am having trouble understanding the following article: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-jtp01255.html Under, Generics are not covariant the author states, Because ln is a List, adding a Float to it seems perfectly legal. But if ln were aliased with li, then it would break the type-safety promise implicit in the definition of li -- that it is a list of integers, which is why generic types cannot be covariant. I can't understand the part where it says "if ln were aliased with li". What does the author means by alias?(reference?). The code snippet above the quoted line seems to illustrate WHAT is illegal in java and not WHY. It would be very helpful to me if somebody could explain with an example. Thanks in advance.

  Normally when I have a private field inside a class or a struct, I use camelCasing, so it would be obvious that it's indeed private when you see the name of it, but in some of my colleagues' C# code, I see that they use m_ mostly or sometimes _, like there is some sort of convention. Aren't .NET naming conventions prevent you from using underscores for member names? And when you mention the MS naming conventions or what not, they tell you it's the best way, but don't explain the reasoning behind it.

• Hex representation of Euro Symbol €

  Hi I was using XVI32 (Hex Editor) to get the hex representation of the Euro symbol and it gives me the value as 80. Another site: http://www.string-functions.com/string-hex.aspx does the same. I am not able to understand why the hex representation is 80 instead of 0x20AC. This 0X80 gives 128 in decimal and if I use Alt+0128 it actually produces the Euro symbol. Could somebody throw some light on what could be the logic behind this conversion from string to hex conversion ? Thanks
