• How can I mount a Synology DS212?

  I Have installed Ubuntu 11.10 and want to mount a synology ds212. I can see the diskstation in de filebrowser (before mounting with nfs) but can not open it. I've tried to mount it with nfs but no succes. Everything should be right at the Synology (nfs is on and maps are selected), and I've added a line in fstab. If I type sudo mount -a I dont't get an error. If I go to the mounted map I can't see anything in it..... What is going wrong? maybe router? Hope someone can help..!

• Checking whether php script was resolved by optimal way

  Can anybody give some advise how to check the arbitrary php code on optimal solution. For example I create a simple algorithm and sent it on the special resource. After proccessing my algorithm this resource give me result whether my code is nice. If no it give me some advice and tell what is wrong (maybe I forgot check devision by zero etc). I looked for php code analyzer but could't find any variants. Maybe someone give me a resource where I can research this problem. Thanks in advance!

• Multilevel Queue Scheduling (MQS) with Round Robin

  I'm trying to use MQS to create a Gantt chart of 5 processes (P1-P5) as well as their waiting, response, and turnaround times (and averages of those metrics) within a CPU task schedule. Here's the basic table of arrival times and bursts: Here's my actual work version after ticking off the finished processes. The time quantum for each time slice is (2 queues) TQ1=4 and TQ2=3. Note that I'm doing MQS and NOT MLFQ: It just doesn't feel like I'm doing MQS right here, I know this gets a little complex but maybe someone can point out where I'm going totally wrong.

• The cost of longer delay between development and QA

  At my current position, QA has become a bottleneck. We have had the unfortunate occurence of features being held out of the current build so that QA could finish testing. This means features that are done being developed may not get tested for 2-3 weeks after the developer has already moved on. With dev moving faster thean QA, this time gap is only going to get bigger. I keep flipping through my copy of Code Compelte, looking for a "Hard Data" snippet that shows the cost of fixing defects grows exponentially the longer it exists. Can someone point me to some studies that back up this concept? I am trying to convince the powers that be that the QA bottleneck is a lot more costly than they think.

• Silverlight Goes Mobile!

  The most exciting announcements from Mix 2010 last week for me were the release of the Windows Phone 7 Series SDK and the news that the platform utilizes Silverlight for the application development technology. From the press and exposure that the platform is being given and the experience that is promised it looks like the Windows Phone 7 Series could eventually compete with the iPhone. For me this is exciting as Silverlight can now be used to develop RIA apps, easily deployed desktop apps and mobile apps. As someone who delivers enterprise technology solutions this equates to a whole bunch of opportunity knocking at the door and asking to join the party. • How was collision detection handled in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past?

  I would like to know how the collision detection was done in The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past. The game is 16x16 tile based, so how did they do the tiles where only a quarter or half of the tile is occupied? Did they use a smaller grid for collision detection like 8x8 tiles, so four of them make one 16x16 tile of the texture grid? But then, they also have true half tiles which are diagonally cut and the corners of the tiles seem to be round or something. If Link walks into tiles corner he can keep on walking and automatically moves around it's corner. How is that done? I hope someone can help me out here.

  I heard someone talking about a fork bomb, I did some research and found some dreadful information about some strange looking characters people can have you type at the command line and as a result do bad things on the computer. I certainly would not issue commands I do not understand but one never knows what can happen. I heard that some OS allows the administrator to place some limit on user processes to mitigate the effects of fork bombs, is this protection in Ubuntu by default or would a person with sudo privilege have to set this? If so, how?

• How to get windows back? Lubuntu?

  I installed lubuntu and I don't like it. I did a clean install to lubuntu rather than making it dual. Now when I want to go back to Windows it won't work. I put the Windows Vista CD in and it won't load. It just loads lubuntu back. I know for a fact that the CD works just fine. I don't know what to do? I did a little research and it says I deleted the windows loader or the partition. Can someone help me?

• how to select categories for user generated content site?

  On the site I'm building, users can create tutorials. I want the users to be able to create tutorials on as many subjects as possible, but still have some preset categories. What's the best way to select these categories? The reason I don't just let users add keywords, and use these for categorization, is because users gain experience points in a certain subject when their tutorial is liked by someone, and in a similar way the Stack Exchange network does, create communities around these subjects. • Are too many assertions code smell?

  I've really fallen in love with unit testing and TDD - I am test infected. However, unit testing is used for public methods. Sometimes though I do have to test some assumptions-assertions in private methods too, because some of them are "dangerous" and refactoring can't help further. (I know, testing frameworks allo testing private methods). So, It became a habit of mine that (almost always) the first and the last line of a private method are both assertions. I guess this couldn't be bad (right ??). However, I've noticed that I also tend to use assertions in public methods too (as in the private) just "to be sure". Could this be "testing duplication" since the public method assumpotions are tested from the unit testng framework? Could someone think of too many assertions as a code smell?

• The practical cost of swapping effects

  I use XNA for my projects and on those forums I sometimes see references to the fact that swapping an effect for a mesh has a relatively high cost, which surprises me as I thought to swap an effect was simply a case of copying the replacement shader program to the GPU along with appropriate parameters. I wondered if someone could explain exactly what is costly about this process? And put, if possible, 'relatively' into context? For example say I wanted to use a short shader to help with picking, I would: Change the effect on every object, calculting a unique color to identify it and providing it to the shader. Draw all the objects to a render target in memory. Get the color from the target and use it to look up the selected object. What portion of the total time taken to complete that process would be spent swapping the shaders? My instincts would say that rendering the scene again, no matter how simple the shader, would be an order of magnitude slower than any other part of the process so why all the concern over effects?

• Payments for Android through Checkout/AdSense

  To those that don't know, Android developers in some countries recently transitioned from AdSense to Checkout for Play Store payments. This is told to existing seller accounts: Q: What happens if I have funds in my AdSense account but am not eligible for a payout yet? A: AdSense accounts have minimum thresholds for payouts. If you’re not eligible for a payout through AdSense for [month of migration], the funds will be automatically transferred back to your Google Checkout account. Once you enter bank account information through your Checkout account and have accrued at least $100 USD, your first wire transfer will be issued during the next monthly payout cycle. However, AdSense is still holding my funds, and since Checkout already paid me directly, following the new directives, I'm afraid the funds will be held in AdSense forever (I used AdSense only for Play Store payments, as required). Obviously, this is no replacement for Google support (a crusade to reach them, but nevermind...), I'm just asking if someone experienced this problem during the transition and how it was fixed.

• Symbolic link all files in directory to show in another directory?

  What I want is to be able to display all files that are ftp'd into /home/ftp in /srv/ftp /srv/ftp is password protected, and has files in it which I don't want to be accessible from the public ftp. So as such I wish that all files uploaded to /home/ftp are automatically symbolically linked (or otherwise) to /srv/ftp. Does this make sense? e.g. ls /srv/ftp: file.sh another.txt something_else.i386 then a user ftp's and drops a file in /home/ftp (or ssh, or whatever) ls /home/ftp: user_file.mk ls /srv/ftp: file.sh another.txt something_else.i386 user_file.mk I hope this makes sense. I have been told that this can probably be achieved using ln to create symbolic links, but I don't want to have to ssh in and create the links every time I (or someone else) puts files over ftp.   Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I just finished writing a website and I'm about to publish it. I was looking at hosting options and I was about to get regular hosting from godaddy, which is about $6 a month with unlimited bandwidth, 150 gb of data, 500 emails and 25 mysql databases. The other option is dedicated servers, which range a lot in price, but are around $200 a month. Why would someone choose dedicated servers? Is it becuase they max the limits of regular hosting or is it because the ram/cpu is shared on regular hosting? If the latter, what will happen if a lot of users come to my site and max the ram/cpu?

• Samsung 305u notebook touchpad not working in Ubuntu 13.10

  I just installed Ubuntu 13.10 on my Samsung 305u notebook. The problem is that the touchpad (cursor and clicking) doesn't work, it does nothing. The only way to fix it is to plug an external mouse, which isn't the optimal. I already checked the system preferences and the touchpad is enabled. I used Ubuntu 13.04 before, and it worked. Then I installed Linux Mint and the touchpad stopped working, that's way I installed 13.10, but now it doesn't work here either. I hope someone can help me.

• How do I fix "malformed line" errors in sources.list?

  I had problems with my movie player. The sound was fine but the picture seemed to hesitate or stick or pause every few seconds so I was looking for some help on how to do this. I tried to install a command in the terminal and got this message: E:Malformed line 68 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse) Can someone tell me how to fix this problem. I cannot open the software center or the update manager. The only other option I can think of is to wipe everything out and do a clean install. Thank you.

  This may be of use to someone else doing this course… The Problem In the section on Computer Arithmetic it gives an example of converting -7.6875 to IEEE floating point format. I understand all the steps except for the first one, where it does the following... 7.6875 (base 10) = 111.1011 (base 2) I don't understand the conversion - I realize that 111 (base 2) = 7 (base 10), but how does the .6875 part relate to the .1011? Or am I totally off track with this? The Solution The fractional part of the decimal to binary conversion is done as follows: 0.6875 x 2 = 1.375 = 0.375 + 1 (Keep the 1 separate) 0.375 x 2   = 0.75   = 0.75    + 0 0.75 x 2    = 1.5      = 0.5      + 1 0.5 x 2     = 1.0       = 0.0       + 1 The bit pattern of 0s and 1s on the right-hand side gives you the fractional part. So 0.6875 (base 10) = .1011 (Base 2) See also Stallings, chapter 19.

Will previous versions of SS (prior to commercial licensing) always be opensource and use the same license as before? If I fork SS today (prior to commercial licensing) on Github, would it be illegal to maintain that after SS goes commercial? If the answer to question 2 is yes, then would I still be able to fork a previous version after SS goes commercial without worrying about the commercial license (all the while maintaining and releasing the source to the public)?

Normally I use interfaces instead of classes to inject beans using setter and I consider it as interface injection, but in case of constructor we also use interfaces (I am confused). • Wanting to learn .NET, can I benefit from the MS discounts?

  I quit high-school a couple of years ago and now I'm studying to get my diploma at a special course the EU created for people in my situation. This course is basically identical to normal high-school the only difference being fewer hours due to the fact that a lot of us have jobs(not me). I would like to learn windows development and .NET and I've seen around that they offer students some great discounts and even some free tools such as Visual Studio and Windows 7. I'm learning Java on Ubuntu at the moment but I'd like to move to .NET but can't afford Windows or other MS-related tools since I don't have a job and no real income. Can someone in my situation benefit from their offers?
