  This is the second day at TechEd North America 2012 and yesterday I had many conversations about PowerPivot and SSAS Tabular. In the evening the book signing at O’Reilley booth has been a big success! I’m writing this post from the speaker’s room. It’s not crowded this morning because the keynote is going on and there are no people also in the hall, everyone is in the keynote room. Today will be a very busy day: I’ll be staffing at Technical Learning Center from 12:30pm to 3:30pm so this is a first chance for joining the conversation about Tabular and DAX. • Finding Telecommuting Opportunities as a Recent College Graduate

  Reading the answers to hiring practices of remote vs. local employees and freelance programming sites, I would like to add this question to the mix. I am a recent college graduate from an electrical engineering background with 2 years worth of work terms in programming (C, C++, VBA, Matlab, etc.) while I was still in school. While I am interested in learning other software tools (such as Python, Ruby on Rails, Javascript, etc.), I want to use the tools I have now in a telecommuting role while I grow my toolset. Despite having 2 years of work experience (and I've lost track of when I have started programming), my status as a recent college graduate may be an obstacle of my credibility to compete for telecommuting (or in fact any) programming opportunities. I don't know how I can go about finding telecommute programming opportunities for someone with my situation. Overall, many of previous places I've worked at liked my work. What are your suggestions? I  have been using the .Net Framework mainly to develop ASP.NET WebApps for some years now and I am moving from using the .Net Framework 2.0 to using the latest features on the 4.x Frameworks, I am planning to document whenever is possible some of the stuff I learn using this space kindly given by the staff of the site. • Tips for a first year CS student looking for a summer internship to gain experience?

  Hello all, I am a first year CS student and my programming experience is only what I have obtained in my computer programming I and II classes this school year. (console applications in C++) I want to find a summer job/internship that would help me build my skill set. Being that I am still such a beginner pay is not a concern, minimum wage would be nice, but as long as I am learning, I really don't care. My current resume just lists a bunch of random jobs i've had in the past (burger king, summer camps, best buy, etc.) Does anyone have any tips (places to look? things to put on resume?) that might help me?

• Moving from XNA/C# to DirectX/C++ quite confused

  I made some game with XNA/C# for Windows Phone and Windows 8, since XNA is dead and Visual studio doesn't support it (I have to target Windows Phone 7.1 to build with XNA), I want to start learning something more "consistent in time" and improve my skills. I'm a little confused about the possibilities, because C++/DirectX alone seems difficult, so I found some high-level classes to help: DirectX Toolkit Cocos2D My questions are: What will happen when they will "die" like XNA? Is C++'s approces more "professional" than C#/XNA and why? Is C++'s approces more "portable"? Is C++'s approces more resistant in terms of time? Is there any consideration about DirectX TK and Cocos2D in terms of performance? I ask that because I found that every Game software house in my country looks for skilled C++ programmers.

• Complete Guide/Tutorials on LWJGL?

  Dont get me wrong, I finished these tutorials on http://lwjgl.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page. I finished The Basics section, OpenGL 3.2 and newer section, and I looked at the Example Code section. They were great tutorials, and I have looked at the external tutorials as well. I don't know where to go from here, and OpenGL is not my strong point. Some one suggested Learning Modern 3D Graphics Programming, and I didnt learn much. I looked at the port to LWJGL, but the book was on C and I couldn't really understand what the OpenGL meant. I am trying to learn 2D gaming, not 3D. Maybe later. Is there any tutorials that aren't C/C++ heavy and teach you 2D OpenGL?

  Lua has been really awesome to learn, it's so simple. I really enjoy scripting languages, and I had an equally enjoyable time learning Python. The Love engine, http://love2d.org/, is really awesome, but I'm looking for something that can handle 3D as well. Is there anything that accommodates 3D in Lua? • F# &ndash; It&rsquo;s time to grow up baby.

  In the last few months since I started learning F# I have begin to notice an increase in the number of people blogging about the language. Sure, it could just be that I am noticing it more because I am actively looking out for questions and blog posts, but even in my day to day reading of Code Project Daily News and Stack Overflow questions there seems to be increased activity around the language. So what sparked this post? Well, today today I logged in and saw that the latest podcast by DNR was on F# and then immediately afterwards I received an email from CodeProject with a great article comparing F# and Scala. Currently, as of this blog posting (21 May 2010) F# is ranked on the tiobe site at position 43, but I am willing to put money on it that in the next few tiobe ratings this ranking will continue to rise till F# will be a top 20.

• Acer Aspire installation of Ubuntu as the one and only OS

  I am quite sick of a Win7 limited edition that was pre-installed on my Acer Aspire One 533. I want to have Ubuntu as the only OS on this little thing. I have tested Ubuntu on a pretty unstable system and I am simply in love with it, despite the fact that I am still on the learning path. So my questions is how do I format/erase all previous info, including windows files? I am interested in a real cleanup of the drives rather than just a re-partitioning, because I travel every now and then and I want to prevent any personal data remaining on the drives for anyone with recovery knowledge to sniff through.   I'm working on picking up XNA and this was a confusing point for me. KeyboardState keyState = Keyboard.GetState(); if (keyState.IsKeyDown(Keys.Left) || keyState.IsKeyDown(Keys.A)) { //Do stuff... } The book I'm using (Learning XNA 4.0, O'Rielly) says that this method accepts a bitwise OR series of keys, which I think should look like this... KeyboardState keyState = Keyboard.GetState(); if (keyState.IsKeyDown(Keys.Left | Keys.A)) { //Do stuff... } But I can't get it work. I also tried using !IsKeyUp(... | ...) as it said that all keys had to be down for it to be true, but had no luck with that either. Ideas? Thanks.

• What is a good way to pause a preseed network installation temporarily?

  I have been learning how to do PXE network install of Ubuntu 12.10 64bit. I would like to have a way to pause the installation at a certain point temporarily. This way, I can for example figure out why a particular preseed d-i statement is not working with Alt-F4, or test out a particular statement in busybox with Alt-F2. I do know that I can leave out the answer to an essential question, e.g. defining language but without country would trigger the debian-installer to prompt me for such info. But I am looking for more fine grained control of pausing. Is it possible?

• Where can I find affordable legal advice for game software related inquiries?

  I am working on simulation middleware which is applicable for game engine implementations. What I would like to do is to make it freely available for use for all non-commercial purposes, while at the same time imposing some percentage of royalty on revenue (above a certain threshold) that is derived from my work. Something very similar to Epic's UDK licensing model. To facilitate the use of my software, I plan to offer binaries (static libs) for several platforms, as well as obfuscated source code which I will freely distribute, in addition to documentation of the API. I simply want to impose the restriction that if you try to make money from it, I get a cut eventually. I'm wondering if there are online forums and such where I am likely to find people who are willing to assist me in terms of learning what sort of things I have to do to get things down on the right kinds of documents. So far a site like this seems to be the most promising.

• How do I go from a simple html5 tic tac toe game to an online 2 player game?

  I've been working on an online 2 player Tic Tac Toe solution for blackberries. both old and new. And so far I have html5 code that has a 3 x 3 layout that switches between x and o for the game mechanics. I believe I'm still missing a check for win function but my question is about the server side of this game. I'm not sure how to go about learning what exactly I want. how do you take what I have now, and make this into a functioning online game? I've been told WAMP is a good solution, as well as IIS. and its all really over my head, so i'm hoping to get a little more clarity as far as what I should focus on to bring this game to life.

  I'm using Visual Studio 11 Beta at home, mainly for learning purposes. But now it's possible to download VS 2012 RC. Does it make sense to install it instead? Does it have many changes comparing with VS 11? I know that VS 11 doesn't work with Azure, was it fixed in VS 2012? EDIT: Actually I found this: What’s new in the RC since Beta, which describes changes in RC and if I decide to install it, I don't need to uninstall previous version: We’ve enabled upgrade from beta to RC, so if you’re using the same product edition (e.g. Professional, Ultimate, etc.), you do not need to uninstall the beta first. Simply run the Visual Studio 2012 RC installer, which will uninstall the right Beta bits and lay down the RC bits, all at once.

• Inspecting the model in a Rails application

  I am learning some Ruby on Rails, and am a newbie. Most of my background is in ASP.net MVC on the back end. As I play with a basic scaffold project, I wonder about this case: you jump into an established Rails project and want to get to know the model. Based on what I have seen so far (again, simple scaffold), the properties for a given class are not immediately revealed. I don't see property accessors on the model classes. I do understand that this is because of the dynamic nature of Ruby and such things are not necessary or even perhaps desirable. Convention over code, I get that. (Am familiar with dynamic concepts, mostly via JS.) But if I am somewhere off in a view, and want to quickly know whether the (eg) Person object has a MiddleName property, how would I find that out? I don't have to go into the migrations, do I?

  I am semi-excited to say that today is my first day into the land of backbone.js.  This will of course take me into many other new javascript-y areas.  As I have primarily been focused on building backend systems for the past many years…with no focus on client side bits…this will be all new ground for me.  Very exciting! I am sure that this endeavor will lead to writing about many new findings along the way.  Expect the subject of near future postings to not be related to MVC or server side code.   I have been pleasantly surprised this week to discover that there is a choice of tools for measuring Code Coverage. If you have Visual Studio Team edition, then if you are using MSTEST, then you have built-in code coverage, however even then you may need a standalone tool. The tools I have found are (costs are per seat): 1) NCover  http://www.ncover.com/ (from $199 to $658 per seat) I have used it but it is very expensive. 2) PartCover http://sourceforge.net/projects/partcover/ - Free!  Steep initial learning curve to get it to work. 3) Dot Cover from http://www.jetbrains.com/dotcover/ - Personal licence - normally $99 but at a introductory price of $75 and free for OpenSource Developers (details at http://www.jetbrains.com/dotcover/buy/buy.jsp#opensource_) 4) Test Matrix from http://submain.com/products/testmatrix.aspx - $149 for a licence
