  I want to develop a simple App for iOS, Android and windows phone. I just wondered that a simple HTML5, JS and CSS combination can work in all of these platforms. I want to know which one will be efficient? No problem with time and coding. But if i can achieve everything with HTML5-JS itself, i will chose Hybrid development. I want to know the major difference between the Native and Hybrid Development with example(I know that the main difference is HTML5-JS supports cross platform). Note : I am not making a game app.

• alternatives for google adwords? [on hold]

  I'm making tests on my landing page, and trying to get some traffic using google adwords. Everytime I make a change or add a new keyword, I have to wait for two or three days for google to aprove the keywords. I'm in Italy, don't know if this happens anywhere else. But is really upsetting. Note: they keywords are things like fortran, SaaS, python... So, I'm looking for an adwords alternative that is fast. That is, if I change the keywords, I can start getting traffic as soon as possible without the long approval time. PD: I've found many alternatives to adwords, but they don't say anything about how fast your adds and keywords are approved which is my major problem right now. That, and price.

• Is the php method md5() secure? Can it be used for passwords? [migrated]

  So executing a php script causes the form values to be sent to the server, and then they are processed. If you want to store a password in your db than you want it to be a cryptographic hash(so your client side is secure, can you generate an md5 using php securely( without submitting the user:password pair in the clear), or is there an alternative standard method of doing this, without having the unecrypted pasword leaving the clients machine? Sorry if this is a stupid question I'm kind of new at this. I think this can be done somehow using https, and on that note if a site's login page does not use https, does that mean that while the databse storage is secure, the transportation is not?

• Generic Handler vs Direct Reference

  In a project where I'm working on the data access layer I'm trying to make a decision how to send data and objects to the next layer (and programmer). Is it better to tell him to reference my dll, OR should I build a generic handler and let him take the objects from there (i.e. json format) If I understand correctly, In case of 2. he would have to handle the objects on his own, whereas in case 1. he will have the entities I've built. Note: It is very probable that other people would need to take the same data, though, we're not up to that yet. Same question here - should I make it into a webservice, or have them access the handler?

  Good day! Our professor asked us to create a Web-based program using JSP and JDBC. The problem is I don't have any idea what to program. We have 5 days to create the program and I am searching websites like hotel reservation system, library catalogue system, Amazon, etc but I think it is too big for 5 days (and I am just a beginner).   I've run into an issue that breaks my collisions. Here's my method: Gather Input Project Rectangle Check for intersection and ispassable Update The update method is built on object_position * seconds_passed * velocity * speed. Input changes velocity and is normalized if 1. This method works well with just one object comparison, however I pass a list or a for loop to the collision detector and velocity gets changed back to a non zero when the list hits an object that passes the test and the object can pass through. Any solutions would be much appreciated. Side note is there a more proper way to simulate movement?

• How do you assign commands to keys to in Terminal?

  Is there a solution to assign special key combinations to words in terminal use. For example the less command is very usefull and i use i a lot to pipe the output of another process through it. The idea would be to set up special key combinations that are only active in terminal use assigned to write different commands? So pressing CTRL + l in terminal window could write | less or CTRL + G could stand for | grep Note: i just mean adding the letters to commandline not execute the finally. A similar way what's tabcompletion but more specific.

  I have two WordPress multisites under one domain - city-x.domain.com and city-y.domain.com. domain.com is a landing page where you select your city, and a cookie will redirect the user to that city on subsequent visits. I'd like to be able to track the number of hits on all pages on domain.com, city-x.domain.com and city-y.domain.com separately and combined. How is this On a side note, I've heard that GA underestimates hits. As this is important for advertising purposes, is there a better free service?

• Advice on approaching a significant rearrangement/refactoring?

  I'm working on an application (hobby project, solo programmer, small-medium size), and I have recently redesigned a significant part of it. The program already works in it's current state, but I decided to reimplement things to improve the OO design. I'm about to implement this new design by refactoring a big part of the application. Thing is I'm not sure where to start. Obviously, by the nature of a rearrangement, the moment you change one part of the program several other parts (at least temporarily) break. So it's a little 'scary' to rearrange something in a piece of software that already works. I'm asking for advice or some general guidelines: how should I approach a significant refactoring? When you approach rearranging large parts of your application, where do you start? Note that I'm interested only in re-arranging the high-level structure of the app. I have no intention of rewriting local algorithms.

  Where can I find a collection of 10-100 3D scenes with photorealistic levels of detail? For example, the scene rendered here contains photorealistic detail. Note I want the underlying object models, textures, etc, not final renderings. I'll be using these scenes to test a computer vision idea. BTW, this is a reposting of this question. I wasn't able to find a Stack Exchange site that is perfectly suited to the question, but as this is a modeling and rendering question, I'm hoping it is a good enough match for the venue.

  I would like to start developing games. I have tried before Game Maker 8, which was a very easy way to start creating games, if you were new in game development. Then, I tried Unity 3D, which was a much more serious and complete tool to create computer-games, and required some experience. And now, I would like to start creating games, and don't use any special environment or developer, but just code (in C++ preferably). • What can I learn to build a (kind of) recommendation system?

  I'm learning how to develop an android app (nothing serious, just for learning and fun), so I devised the following goal: an app that learns with users actions and, some time later, starts to suggest some useful things. For example: The user add some notes daily, in the morning, and mark some of them as done generally on thursdays and sundays, at evening. Based on that behaviour and the relation of the notes marked as done, the app will prioritize notes that are more propense to be marked, and avoid notifying in days where no note is marked. This is a silly example but I think it ilustrates well what I want to do. I know this is a matter of machine learning, but I don't know where I should start learning. To anyone interested, I'm build a backend in Python, so any libraries or frameworks in this language are very welcome. The frontend, by the way, is sencha touch + phonegap.

• How to avoid problems when installing Ubuntu and Windows 7 in dual-boot?

  I want to try out Ubuntu (and hopefully choose it as my primary OS). After looking at many versions of it in VirtualBox and from Live CD, I've finally decided to install it. So I defragmented and shrinked one of the partitions to make room for Ubuntu. My current setup (after shrinking the D: partition): [·100 MB·] [······250000 MB······] [·······600000 MB·······] [··100000 MB···] Reserved Windows 7 system (C:) Data (D:) Free space NTFS NTFS NTFS (for Ubuntu) The Internet (including AskUbuntu) is full of scary stories about Windows not loading after installation of Ubuntu, something about installing GRUB to a wrong partition, etc. As I am a newbie to Linux and Ubuntu, it is very easy for me to do something wrong. Please mention the problems that may appear and explain how to avoid them. Ubuntu version that will be installed: 10.10 Desktop amd64 Please note that I have installed Windows 7 about a year ago, so I have much to lose if something goes wrong. I want to be very careful because there is no way for me to backup all the data.

• How to clean unused app files

  I've finished working on a web app and looking back at the process, I can see that a lot of extra files have been accumulated - backup css, php files, javascripts, images. I'm using an MVC workflow (codeigniter) and I would like to clean the app from unused files. There are also libraries which I've downloaded but referenced some of the files in my code, yet I've kept the unused files too. Total mess really, I'll take a note for the next app to become more organized. There is also a fair security concern regarding these sorts of situations, plus I think that it would be better to omit all the extra files when search engines are indexing the app. Has anyone been in that situation and what is the safest/fastest way to clean the app? This review closes 27 October. JSR 339,  JAX-RS 2.0: The Java API for RESTful Web Services, has published a Public Review. This review closes 12 November. The EC Nominations are now open until 11 October.  Any JCP Member may nominate themselves for the 2 open seats in the 2012 EC Elections.  Note that both seats will be for a 1 year term only, since all EC Members will stand for Election in 2013.  The merged EC will take effect in November 2012.

• Garbled screen after sleep/suspend with nVidia 8800M GTS Ubuntu 11.10

  Just did a clean install of 11.10, have been using it (and enjoying it!) for about a day now. But it seems that every time I resume from a sleep or blank screen after idling for a while, my desktop, as well as any programs on the screen get "garbled" I had a few windows open and all displayed the same gui glitching except for Chromium (I am guessing because it was minimized to the Unity Launcher, and not currently on the screen when I woke the PC up.) Anyone know what might be causing this, and how I might be able to fix it? I am using a Gateway P-6860FX with a C2D 1.8GHz, and nVidia 8800M GTS 512mb. • NetBeans 7.0.1 now in RC

  What would a GlassFish release be without a NetBeans version to go with it? The NetBeans team has released the NetBeans IDE 7.0.1 RC 1 which will bring full compatibility with JDK 7 as well as GlassFish 3.1.1 support (this particular RC ships with the soft code freeze build of GlassFish 3.1.1). This 7.0.1 RC 1release also includes numerous bugfixes and performance improvements across all areas and is available from the usual download page and the final version of NetBeans IDE 7.0.1 is expected in late July (once JDK 7 has shipped would be an educated guess). Note that if you're an existing NetBeans 7.0 user you'll be offered with updates to your existing install via the Update Center once 7.0.1 final ships.

• Can I create two databases, each for different directories?

  I have run Recoll which created a database for my data partition on my internal hard drive. The database is stored under my home partition in the same internal hard drive. I now want to run Recoll to create a database for a dicrectory on my external hard drive, and store this new database on that external hard drive, because my internal hard drive doesn't have enough space to hold the new database. I was wondering how to do that in Recoll? Note: my current Recoll was installed from software center of Ubuntu 12.04. Thanks!

• Ubuntu is kde styled after install AND removal

  I installed kubuntu-desktop and every thing was fine. Then later when I actually logged in to Kde, I decided that I still like Unity better so I ran sudo apt-get purge kubuntu-desktop && sudo apt-get autoremove. After that bits and pieces of my Ubuntu/Unity have been Kde styled. All browsers have Kde icons and some applications show 'About Kde' in their menus, all text fields have that 'bluesh glow' around them, etc. What is still left of Kubuntu? Note: I saw this question and this question, but both where outdated and didn't work.

• Letters of recommendation from customers? [closed]

  I am leaving my job soon and am looking for letters of recommendation. My problem is, I've worked more closely with my customers than my project lead (not technical) or manager (the customers usually talk to me first and rarely even if CC my lead if I don't). So in this case, the customer has seen my work more closely than my leadership and can better attest to my abilities, communication skills, and performance. Are recommendations from customers viable, or will they be largely dismissed? Secondarily, can they be more useful than letters from managers that don't really know your work at all? Note: I already have a letter from the only coworker I've really worked with, but I'm looking to get more than one for good measure.

• Is this a typo in the Artistic License 2.0?

  I'm not sure if this would fit better in StackExchange/English, but regardless, there is no practical use to the answer, other than to cure my curiosity. Note this sentence at the end of the Artistic License 2.0: THE PACKAGE IS PROVIDED BY THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER AND CONTRIBUTORS "AS IS' AND WITHOUT ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES. It does not affect any legal aspects of the license, but is there a reason they mixed the use of single and double quotes on AS IS? The license is so new that this wouldn't have been for "command prompt friendly" reasons. Is there special use or meaning behind this in the English language, or was it a typo?
