• The Uganda .NET Usergroup meeting for January 2011 - a look back.

  We had a very interesting meeting on Friday 28th last week. We had 10 attendees and two speakers. The first topic presented was Cloud Computing, presented by Allan Rwakatungu @arwakatungu who works with MTN Uganda. He gave a very brilliant outline of how Cloud computing and service oriented applications had begun changing the platform for operating business and the costs it saves because of scalability and elasticity. He went on to demonstrate the steps you would take if you are beginning a new Windows Azure project. He explained the history and evolution of the Windows Azure, SQL Azure and cloud services offered by Amazon and google.com. The attendees had many questions to ask (obviously), but they were all answered very well. We once again thank Allan, for taking time to prepare the presentation and demonstrating for us. We recorded a video on the entire presentation and after doing some editing we will publish it. One wish which was echoed by most members was that Microsoft should open the cloud services and development for Africa. Microsoft currently does not even have servers here in Africa and so far, that does not put African developers in the same platform as other developers in other continents. Now is the time considering the improvements in network speeds and joining of the Seacom network and broadband.   I presented on Parallelism and Multithreading using .NET 4.0, I also gave some details on the language changes in C# 5.0 and the async keyword and the TaskEx class. I explained the Task, Scheduling of parallel tasks and demonstrated problems that may arise from using parallelism inappropriately. I also demonstrated the performance improvements that may be achieved by taking advantage of multi-core processors. You may download the presentation on Parallelism and Multi-threading from here. The resolution of the meeting was that we should meet more than once a month and begin other activities which should be more fun. e.g. Geek Dinner, Geek Beer or CodeCamp.   Data governance,veri ile ilgili islemler için bir sorumluluklar sistemidir. Bu sistemin temelini ise politikalar, standartlar ve prosedürler olusturur. Sistem politikalar, standartlar ve prosedürler sayesinde verinin ne zaman, hangi sartlar altinda, hangi eylemlerde, hangi yöntemler ile kimler tarafindan kullanilacagina karar verir. Sistemin kurumda basarili bir sekilde islemesi için öncelikle kurumda farkindalik saglanmasi gereklidir. Farkindalik saglandiktan sonra ise kurum governance ve mimari kültürünü benimsemelidir. Ancak bu sartlar altinda sistem basarili bir sekilde isleyebilecektir. Bu sebeplerden dolayidir ki data governance kisa bir süreç degil, aksine kurum varligini sürdürdügü sürece isleyecek olan bir süreçtir. Bu durum bize data governance in bir proje degil bir program oldugunu açiklamaktadir. Programin baslangicinda kurumun ihtiyaçlarinin netlesmesi ve farkindaligin saglanmasi temeldir. Hedef kitle ise, veri ile dogrudan ve ya dolayli olarak iliski içerisinde olan herkesdir. Bu sebeple programin baslangicinda hedef kitleyi içeren ekipler ile toplantilar düzenlenecektir. Bu toplantilar sayesinde hem farkindalik saglanacak hemde ekiplerin ihtiyaçlari birebir ekipler tarafindan aktarilarak netlesecektir. Hedef kitlenin ihtiyaçlari netlestirildikten sonra ise devamli isleyecek olan bu sürecin planlamasi yapilacaktir. Bu sürecin planlanmasinda ihtiyaçlarin önceliklendirilmesi gerekmektedir. Sebebi ise her ekibin ihtiyaçlarinin farkli olabilecegi ve bütün ihtiyaçlara ayni anda karsilik verilemeyebileceginin öngörülmesidir. Bu öngörünün temeli ise ekiplerin ihtiyaçlarinin birbirleriyle olan baglantisidir. Süreç planlamasinda ihtiyaçlarin önceliklendirilmesinin ardindan kurumun büyüklügünün gözönünde bulundurulmasi gerekmedir. Kurumun büyüklügünün önemi ise eger kurum bir bütün olarak ayni anda govern edilemeyecek kadar büyük ise ihtiyaçlari öncelikli olarak bulunan ekipler ile govern edilmesine baslanarak sürecin belirli bir hiz ile bütün kurumda isler hale getirilmesini saglamaktir. Ihtiyaçlar belirlendikten ve ilgili ekipler seçildikten sonra artik programin planlanmasina geçilebilecek. Programin planlama asamasinda öncelikli olarak sürecin asamalarini kontrol edecek ve süreç kurum içerisinde isleyise geçtiginde kontrolü saglayacak olan Data Governance Office in planlanmasidir. Office in planlanmasiyla birlikte süreçteki roller ve bu rollerin sorumluluklari belirlenecektir. Planlama asamasinda Data governance office, roller ve sorumluluklar, güvenlik ve veri saklanan sistemler ele alinacak konulardir. Planlama asamasi tamamlandiginda ise belirlenen ekipler ve ihtiyaçlar dogrultusunda programin isleyis asamasina geçilebilecektir. Isleyis kisminda ekibin ihtiyaçlari dogrultusunda güvenlik konusunda ve veri saklanan sistemler üzerinde çalismalar yapilacaktir. Bu yapilan çalismalar bir süreç olarak dökümante edilecek ve süreç sona erdiginde baska bir ekiple baska bir ihtiyaç dogrultusunda çalisma yapilarak ayni süreç isletilecek ve böylece kurum içesinde ilgili süreçte standartlasma saglanacaktir. Güvenlik konusunda verinin erisim güvenligi ve kullanim güvenligi ele alinacaktir. Veri saklanan sistemler üzerindeki çalismalar ise saklanan sistemlerin program dahilinde belirlenen standartlar ile olusturulmasi ve yönetilmesi saglanacaktir. Isleyis kisminin ardindan ise programin izleme kismina geçilecektir. Bu kisimda artik Data Governance Office olusmus, politikalar, standartlar ve prosedürler belirlenmistir. Ve Data Governance Office çalisanlari rolleri ve sorumluluklari dahilinde programin isleyisini izleyecek ve gerek gördügünde politikalar standartlar ve prosedürler üzerinde degisiklikler yapacaklardir.

• OOF checklist

  When going on vacation or otherwise being out of office (known as OOF in Microsoft), it is polite and professional that our absence creates the minimum disruption possible to the rest of the business, and especially our colleagues. Below is my OOF checklist - I try to do these as soon as I know I'll be OOF, rather than leave it for the night before. Let the relevant folks on the team know the planned dates of absence and check if anybody was expecting something from you during that timeframe. Reset expectations with them, and as applicable try to find another owner for individual activities that cannot wait. Go through your calendar for the OOF period and decline every meeting occurrence so the owner of the meeting knows that you won't be attending (similar to my post about responding to invites). If it is your meeting cancel it so that people don’t turn up without the meeting organizer being there. Do this even for meetings were the folks should know due to step #1. Over-communicating is a good thing here and keeps calendars all around up to date. Enter your OOF dates in whatever tool your company uses. Typically that is the notification to your manager. In your Outlook calendar, create a local Appointment (don't invite anyone) for the date range (All day event) setting the "Show As" dropdown to "Out of Office". This way, people won’t try to schedule meetings with you on that day. If you use Lync, set the status to "Off Work" for that period. If you won't be responding to email (which when on your vacation you definitely shouldn't) then in Outlook setup "Automatic Replies (Out of Office)" for that period. This way people won’t think you are rude when not replying to their emails. In your OOF message point to an alias (ideally of many people) as a fallback for urgent queries. If you want to proactively notify individuals of your OOFage then schedule and send a multi-day meeting request for the entire period. Remember to set the "Show As" to "Free" (so their calendar doesn’t show busy/oof to others), set the "Reminder" to "None" (so they don’t get a reminder about it), set "Low Importance", and uncheck both "Response Options" so if they don't want this on their calendar, it is just one click for them to get rid of it. Aside: I have another post with advice on sending invites. If you care about people who would not observe the above but could drop by your office, stick a physical OOF note at your office door or chair/monitor or desk. Have I missed any? • Alert: It is No Longer 1982, So Why is CRM Still There?

  Hot off the heels of Oracle’s recent LinkedIn integration announcement and Oracle Marketing Cloud Interact 2014, the Oracle Social Cloud is preparing for another big event, the CRM Evolution conference and exhibition in NYC. The role of social channels in customer engagement continues to grow, and social customer engagement will be a significant theme at the conference. According to Paul Greenberg, CRM Evolution Conference Chair, author, and Managing Principal at The 56 Group, social channels have become so pervasive that there is no longer a clear reason to make a distinction between “social CRM” and traditional CRM systems. Why not? Because social is a communication hub every bit as vital and used as the phone or email. What makes social different is that if you think of it as a phone, it’s a party line. That means customer interactions are far from secret, and social connections are listening in by the hundreds, hearing whether their friend is having a positive or negative experience with your brand. According to a Mention.com study, 76% of brand mentions are neutral, neither positive nor negative. These mentions fail to get much notice. So think what that means about the remaining 24% of mentions. They’re standing out, because a verdict, about you, is being rendered in them, usually with emotion. Suddenly, where the R of CRM has been lip service and somewhat expendable in the past, “relationship” takes on new meaning, seriousness, and urgency. Remarkably, legions of brands still approach CRM as if it were 1982. Today, brands must provide customer experiences the customer actually likes (how dare they expect such things). They must intimately know not only their customers, but each customer, because technology now makes personalized experiences possible. That’s why the Oracle Social Cloud has been so mission-oriented about seamlessly integrating social with sales, marketing and customer service interactions so the enterprise can have an actionable 360-degree view of the customer. It’s the key to that customer-centricity we hear so much about these days. • Word 2010 Crashing

  We have an office with all users using the same spec'ed PCs with the same Image deployed to them, so that the software and configuration is identical. I have one user whos keeps having the install of MS Word 2010 crash intermittently. First i reinstalled Office 2010 Suite, but will have the crashes. The PC has been replaced with a clean install of Windows and Office but we are still having the issues with Word crashing. We have had the user to log onto another PC which we know to be working fine, but again, Word keeps crashing. • Ho can I tell when the background is touched on a UICollectionView?

  I've tried subclassing UICollectionView and overriding touchesBegan:withEvent: and hitTest:WithEvent:, and both of those methods trigger when I touch a cell. However, if I touch the space between the cells, nothing happens at all. • Sharepoint AD imported users are becomming sporadically corrupted, causing us to have to create a new account

  Sharepoint 2007 MOSS with AD imported users. All servers are 2008. ***UPDATE More details in testing. This Sharepoint is in an AD Child domain (clients.mycompany.local), which is sub to the root of the AD tree (mycompany.local). The user is in the parent tree (as are half of the other functional users. I have elevated the user rights to Domain. In looking at the logs, it seems that the Sharepoint server is trying to authenticate them by querying the DC for the clients domain (which is the way it normally works and still works for all existing identically configured users). I think if I could force it to authenticate up to the top domain DC then it would be ok?? I have around 50 users, over the past 2 months, I have had a handful of the users suddenly unable to login to Sharepoint. When they login, they either get a blank screen or they are repropmted. These users are using accounts that have been used for many months, sometimes the problem originates with a password change. In all cases, the users account works on every other Active Directory authenticated resource (domain, exchange, LDAP). In the most recent case, last night I was forced deleted a user ("John smith") because of corruption. The orifinal account name was jsmith. I deleted him from active directory, then deleted him from the profile list in Sharepoint Shared Services. I could not find a way to delete him from the Sharepoint user list, but I reran the import after recreating his account (renamed it too just to be sure to "smithj"). At first, this did not wor, the user could still access all other resources but Sharepoint. then, some 30 minutes later it inexplicably started working. This morning, the user changed passwords, which immediatly broke the login on Sharepoint again. • Can / should I prevent my domain controller doing forward lookups for remote users?

  I have a Windows Server 2003 server in the office. I VPN into the LAN remotely. My VPN has a virtual NIC with the Windows Server as the primary DNS since it is a domain controller. When connected to the VPN and I do a nslookup or simply browse the web my VPN's DNS (the office's Windows Server) provides the DNS answers - I beleive becuase it has DNS forwarders so queries it cant answer it forwards and then relays the answer. This is the desired behaviour for workstations in the office (they should query their domain controller first). However for remote VPN users this is not desirable - I do not want my remote office's server to answer DNS queries it is not the authority of (which happends to be 192.168.x.x). Is there any way I can configure this?

  I've generated a certificate using openssl and place it on the client's machine, but when I try to connect to my server using that certificate, I error mentioned in the subject line back from my server.   At our office, any of our Windows 7 Clients get this error message when we try and RDP to a remote W2K8 Server outside of the office :- Your system administrator does not allow the user of saved credentials to log on to the remote computer XXX because its identity is not fully verified. Please enter new credentials A quick google search leads to some posts they all suggest I edit group policy, etc. I'm under the impression, that the common fix for this, is to follow those instructions -per Windows7 machine-. Ack :( Is there anyway I can do something via our office Active Directory .. which auto updates all Windows 7 clients in the office LAN?

• Temporarily disable an AD server

  Topology and setup We have main office A, and branch office (abroad) B. Our ISP somehow messed up the MPLS, and office A<B will not be connected until a few days. At location B, we have an AD (and the other two ADs at location A). Location A also have an exchange server. The problems A few users at A have problem to login to their computers running Windows XP, the logon process kind of hangs where "Applying computer policies". Additionally, I can't start the Exchange management shell, it fails on get-recipient because the AD abroad (location B) is unreachable. Solution? I could delete the AD at B, but Im pretty sure it will be a hazzle to re-join it, and since the office is abroad it's not an option to just go there and re-install it - re join, I now wonder how I in location As primary and secondary ADs can temporarily disable AD at location B.

• ownCloud WebDAV interface seems to be broken

  I've been trying to host ownCloud on my server but everytime I try to it tells me this : Your web server is not yet properly setup to allow files synchronization because the WebDAV interface seems to be broken. Please double check the installation guides. This is my setup : Windows Server 2012 R2 IIS 8.5 PHP 5.5.11 ownCloud 6.0.3 MySQL 5.6.17 I tried google the error but I can't seem to find anything usefull. Some say I should try if this works : [hostname]/remote.php/webdav/ and yes I can navigate to this folder and I can open files from there. The calendar works and I can also just upload files the web version of ownCloud the only thing that doesn't seem to work is the sync client.   Our company has a handful of field offices that have recently been setup with a regular internet connection after we removed the T1 and router that connected them directly to our network. Now, when the users are in the office, they log in to the VPN to be able to connect to the network. For the sake of them being able to print and scan from the local multi-function we have setup a split tunnel VPN. We currently have about 15-20 users using this setup around the country without any problems. Recently one of our users started having problems accessing internal programs/sites when connecting from both home and the office. There are three other users in the same office and they do not have this problem. I assumed that it was something with the computer and went ahead and replaced it with another of the same model. The computer worked fine in our home office; however, when the user received it, she had the exact same problem both at home and in the field office. Thinking it may be a NIC driver issue I sent her another computer, this time a different model, same problem occurred. If I update the host file to point to the correct paths, things will work, and if I connect via a normal VPN connection everything works, but the user cannot scan or print - which is a problem. Have tried to find ways to create another tunnel on a normal VPN and have tried to find ways to force the correct tunnel on the split tunnel VPN. It appears that there is something related to the ISP because if I connect to Comcast or Verizon it is fine but once she connects to Insite then she has problems. I have been unable to get any support from Insite as they don't feel the issue is with them. We use a Nortel VPN client. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

• Network use of Gaming PC

  Background After YEARS of waiting, I built the custom gaming PC of my dreams: Intel i7 - 975 Extreme Edition 3.3ghz (overclocked to 4.0) ATI Radeon 5970 2gb Corsair 256 gb SSD Drive 2 TB Sata II 3.0 7200rpm data drive 12 GB Kingston Hyper-X (1600mhz) DDR3 Windows 7 Ultra 64 bit And so on. . . Problem I hooked this beast up to our home theater and settled in for a great gaming season only to realize a couple of drawbacks: It's hard to accurately wax bad guys using a keyboard in your lap whilst reclined on your couch (and using a wireless keyboard). It's hard to read the text on the screen (i.e. menus, etc). I find that a 1:1 ratio (screen diagonal inch to inch away from screen) is optimum, but using the home theater, it's more like 1:3 which has me squinting unless I sit on the coffee table. The wife always seems to want the TV the same time I do and, unfortunately "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" and Battlefield BC don't mix. I am losing the battle in the home theater room, but the PC has to stay there (long story). So, this leaves me with the option of playing in my home office which is about 30 feet away from the home theater. I am a software developer so I have a pretty decent set up in my office--multiple 1080p monitors, HP Envy 17 which can run games like Crysis in 720p with out stammering too much. Also, I can game very comfortably at my desk in the office. Still, even though the set up in my office can run games well enough, I don't want to regress to that when I have worked YEARS for an awesome gaming PC that can run everything on ultra high settings. My Question What are my options for running my games on the beastly desktop in the Home Theater, but physically playing in my office about 30 feet away? A really long HDMI cable? LAN/RDC? Details that May Help We have an open crawlspace so running cable from HT room to office is no problem. I already have networked the house with a LAN Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Matt

• Remote Desktop Services In A Virtual VMWare Environment

  I have a quick question regarding Microsoft Remote Desktop Services in a virtualized environment using VMWare. This environment will actually be hosted in a large data center with in a cloud that is offered. This particular data center has the ability to establish high speed point to point connections with customers via metro-ethernet who are hosted in the cloud. The result is that customers can actually host their corporate domain in the data center's cloud. Put the merits of such a configuration aside for the time being. Believe me when I say that the cloud is stable and had enough hardware behind it to rival a dedicated cabinet. My question has to do with RDS in a virtual environment, which would amount to virtual desktops hosted on a virtual server. I've read that this works without issue using Hyper-V and VMWare. But before I take the plunge I wanted to get some feedback from the community.

• SafeOffice 500 - how to enable VPN access to another network (out)

  Hi, I have a safe office 500 box at my edge. (checkpoint's hardware firewall) I'm trying to connect to another office VPN using windows 7 pptp connection. It fails (saying something about enabling GRE). (after authenticating, hangs for a while, than give the error message.) Using the same computer with direct internet access (not behind the firewalls) works fine and I get connected. how do I setup the safe office to enable me to use vpn (pptp) out connections.
