• Time diff calculations where date and time are in seperate columns

  I've got a query where I'm trying to get the hours in duration (eg 6.5 hours) between two different times. In my database, time and date are held in different fields so I can efficiently query on just a startDate, or endDate as I never query specifically on time. My query looks like this SELECT COUNT(*), IFNULL(SUM(TIMEDIFF(endTime,startTime)),0) FROM events WHERE user=18 Sometimes an event will go overnight, so the difference between times needs to take into account the differences between the dates as well. I've been trying SELECT COUNT(*), IFNULL(SUM(TIMEDIFF(CONCAT(endDate,' ',endTime),CONCAT(startDate,' ',startTime))),0) FROM events WHERE user=18 Unfortunately I only get errors when I do this, and I can't seem to combine the two fields into a single timestamp.

  Hi, In .NET land what would be a good approach for quick prototyping of a concept (i.e. development just on my PC) that could then be extended out to product (users across LAN/WAN), BUT in a fashion that the model/business logic code and data access layer code can be used as is? One thought for example I had as to do: (a) WinForms with business logic and Entity Framework layer to SQL Server Express on my PC, then (b) Go then to ASP.net (using the business logic / data library) with SQL Server/IIS Any comments? Other suggestions?

• Entity Framework 4.1 auto generate with DbContext when creating ADO.NET Entity Data Model

  I would like to work with DbContext instead of ObjectContext. I updated EF so now I have the DbContext, but I want to generate my strongly-typed context based on the DbContext and not the ObjectContext. When I add new ADO.NET Entity Data Model, it is still based on the ObjectContext. Is it not possible to have it base off of DbContext in Visual Studio 2010 with EF 4.1? UPDATE: Okay, I followed the directions in this link and was able to generate the DbContext template objects. However, now it is saying there is ambiguity between the template entities and the entities in my .edmx file. How do I resovle this? Do I blow away the ones in the .edmx file?

• NHibernate: Dynamically swapping a single domain model between multiple physical data models

  Hi In this article Ayende describes how to map a single domain model to multiple physical data models. Is it possible to extend this principle such that the mapping can chosen dynamically? So for example, imagine we had an entity that could be written to the same physical schema in three ways depending on its current status, and lets assume that regardless of status each entity had a unique identifier. One solution would be to represent the entity in its different states with three separate classes: one for each mapping. Then the entity could be loaded and in order to change its state the entity could be mapped to a class representing one of its other states and then saved back to the schema, making use of a different mapping. I was wondering if it is at all possible to have the same entity represented by one class that held a status flag (kind of like a discriminator), and any save to the schema would choose the appropriate mapping based on the value of the status flag. I would love to hear what do you guys think. Ideas: just hashing all the custom data in a data field (pro: writing is easier, con: reading back out may be harder); children fields (the model will have multiple fields of strings, fields of text, and fields for file path); fixed number of custom fields in the same table with a key mapping data hash stored in the same row; Non-SQL approach, but then the problem would be generating/changing models on the fly to work with different custom fields;

Is anyone more experiencing this problem?   hello all....firstly any help is greatly appreciated! i have been searching for a solution to my problem for a while and haven't found exactly what i am looking for. i have two tables notifications and mailmessages. notifications has fields( notifytime, notifynumber, and accountnumber). mailmessages has fields(id, messagesubject, messagenumber, accountnumber) my goal is to create a single sql query to retrieve distinct rows from mailmessages WHERE the accountnumber is a specific number AND the notifynumber=messagenumber AND ONLY the most recent notifytime from the notifications table where the accountnumbers match in both tables. i am using sqlexpress2008 as a backend to an asp.net page....this query should return distinct messages for an account with only the most recent date from the notifications table..please help! i'll buy you a beer!!!

  My application makes use of the sfGuardUser plugin. One of my tables has a relation onto the sf_guard_user table so there is a corresponding setSfGuardUser() function in the base model. From Actions.class.php, I am attempting to set the current user into the object using this function, (Which I then save in the database). my attempt: ->setSfGuardUser($this->getUser()); //called from inside Actions.class.php this throws an error: Couldn't call Doctrine_Core::set(), second argument should be an instance of Doctrine_Record or Doctrine_Null when setting one-to-one references. ...# at Doctrine_Record->coreSetRelated('sfGuardUser', object('myUser')) Which makes me think that getUser() is not returning a sfGuardUser object, though I don't know how to check this. Can anyone offer any insight?

I am trying to find out if it is possible for the view helper that generates these images to access the model or controller directly, as it is not possible to load the image data at any other point in the controller work flow. I know this is a bit of a hack really, but it is easier than trying to rebuild the entire data management stack above the view.

  I'm quite interested in automatic images translation to 3d models. Not really for commercial product, but from the point of possible academic research and implementation. What I'd like to achieve is almost transparent for user process of transformation series of images (fewer is better) to 3d model which might be shown in flash/silverlight/javafx or similar. Consider online furniture store with 3d models of all items in stock. Kinda cool to have ability to see the product in 3d before purchasing it. I managed to find a few pieces of software, like insight3d, but it couldn't be used in my case I guess. So, are there any similar projects or tips for me? If it would require to write that piece of software - I'd really love to dig into research on this field.

  So I have a table containing different elements and dates. It basically looks like this: actieElement beginDatum 1 1/01/2010 1 1/01/2010 1 10/01/2010 2 1/02/2010 2 3/02/2010 What I now need is the smallest date for every actieElement. I've found a solution using a simple GROUP BY statement, but that way the query loses its scope and you can't change anything anymore. Without the GROUP BY statement I get multiple dates for every actieElement because certain dates are the same. I thought of something like this, but it also does not work as it would give the subquery more then 1 record: SELECT s1.actieElement, s1.begindatum FROM tblActieElementLink AS s1 WHERE (((s1.actieElement)=(SELECT TOP 1 (s2.actieElement) FROM tblActieElementLink s2 WHERE s1.actieElement = s2.actieElement ORDER BY s2.begindatum ASC)));

• mysql date format with changing string value

  I have a field called Timestamp, that stores its values as text as opposed to an actual Timestamp. The logging application is unchangeable, unfortunately. So table.Timestamp -> text field with format -> "Wed Mar 02 13:28:59 CDT 2011" I have been developing a query to purge all but the most recent row using this as my Timestamp selector, which is also converting the string into a date - MAX( STR_To_DATE( table.Timestamp , '%a %b %d %H:%i:%s CDT %Y' ) My query works perfectly... However, what I've found is that the string value - 'CDT' - changes between 'CDT' and 'CST' depending on whether the current time is daylight savings time or not. During daylight savings time, it logs as 'CDT', and vice versa. So all the rows that contain 'CST' get ignored when I run this - MAX( STR_To_DATE( table.Timestamp , '%a %b %d %H:%i:%s CDT %Y' ) and all the rows that contain 'CDT' get ignored when I run this - MAX( STR_To_DATE( table.Timestamp , '%a %b %d %H:%i:%s CST %Y' ) Is there a way to make it run against both string formats?

  Howdy - today a weird problem occured to me: I have a modle class in Django and added a custom property to it that shall not be saved into the database and therefore is not represent in the models structure: class Category(models.Model): groups = models.ManyToManyField(Group) title = defaultdict() Now, when I'm within the shell or writing a test and I do the following: c1 = Category.objects.create() c1.title['de'] = 'german title' print c1.title['de'] # prints "german title" c2 = Category.objects.create() print c2.title['de'] # prints "german title" <-- WTF? It seems that 'title' is kind of global. If I change title to a simple string it works as expected, so it has to do something with the dict? • How to design model for multi-tiered data?

  Say I have three types of object: Area, Subarea and Topic. I want to be able to display an Area, which is just a list of Subareas and the Topics contained in those Subareas. I never want to be able to display Subareas separately - they're just for breaking up the Topics. Topics can, however, appear in multiple Areas (but probably under the same Subarea). How would I design a model for this? I could use ForeignKey from Topic to Subarea and from Subarea to Area, but it seems unnecessarily complex given that I never want to interact with subareas themselves. Also, none of these objects are ever altered or added to by the user. They're just for me to represent information. Maybe there is a better way to represent it all?
