• Apache strace to hunt down a memory leak

  We have a server with a memory issue: the server keeps allocating itself memory and doesn't release it. We're running Apache. I set MaxReqsPerClient to a really low value just so the threads don't hold a lot of memory, but has anyone seen calls like this? • USB-Powered Speakers

  I use a set of external USB speakers at the office which have no power-source other than my laptop USB port. Sometimes they're silent, and at others it sounds like an electric moth is fluttering around inside one of the speakers (the main speaker). This doesn't happen when my machine is doing any heavy crunching, it just comes and goes. This has happened with other USB speakers on other laptops too in my experience. Any idea on what causes this, and how I can fix it?

I'm a computer science student and have been learning Flex and Actionscript 3.0 for 4 months. I know it's easy to program in MXML, and Actionscript 3.0 is pretty easy with bunch of classes, but when I try to code in C++ or C, I struggle, I feel I'm being inefficient and it scares me. Since I'm a student, I've no experience in developing algorithms and tough program solving? I'd like to be a web developer. Does a web developer need strong fundamentals when it comes to things such as complex algorithms and high end coding?

• crunchbang: it takes up *how* much memory?!?!

  I've been trying many distros of Linux lately, trying to find something I like for my netbook. I started out with Ubuntu, and I can tell you I am a big fan. Ubuntu is now fast to install, much simpler to administer, and pretty light resource-wise. My original install was the standard 32 bit version of 9.04. I tried the netbook remix version of this release, but it was very, very slow. Even the full-blown version used only about 200mb. Much better than the almost 800 that the recommended Windows y version took. Once the newest release of Ubuntu was released, I decided to try the netbook remx of 10.04. It used even less RAM; only about 150mb. I thought I'd found my OS. I certainly settled in and prepared to use it forever. Then, someone I know suggested I try cunchbang. It is the most minimalistic UI I've ever seen, using Openbox rather than Gnome or KDE. Very slick, simple and clean. Since I am using the alpha of the most recent version (using Debian Squeeze), the apps provided for you are few...although more will be provided soon. You do have a word processor, etc., although not the OpenOffice you would normally get in Ubuntu. But the best part? 48MB. That's it. 48mb fully loaded, supporting what I can "hotel services". It's fast, boots quick, and believe it or not, I can even do Java-based development....on my netbook! Pretty slick.   More on it as I use it.

I have separated 4 GB of RAM for PHP, now according to the calculations 40 Child Processes via one socket, and I have total of 3 sockets in my Nginx and FPM configuration. My doubt is about the amount of memory consumption by those child processes. I tried to create high load in the server via httperf hog and siege but I could not calculate the accurate memory usage by all the PHP processes (other processes like MySQL and Nginx were also running). And all the sockets were in use, So, I seek guidance from anyone who have done this before or know how exactly the pm.max_children in PHP Works. Since I have 3 Pools/sockets with 40 child processes does that count to 3 x 40 x 40 Mb of Memory usage ? or it is just like 40 Max. Child processes sharing 3 sockets (and the total memory usage is just 40 x 40 Mb) ?

But what to do when I have resource containing other resource (for example spriteFont contains reference to sprite and letters description). Should that sprite be added to resource manager? • Power scheme faulty [closed]

When I put the power cable back in, the screen brightens back to it's original brightness. However, I have since replaced the power cable, and the screen remains darkened.   I think I'm having difficulty fully understanding subvolumes and snapshots. The /home partition is btrfs. I want to create a "backup" snapshot of /home/user (for example) but user has existed for years (previously ext4 btrfs-convert). I believe you can only make a snapshot of a subvolume. I checked and there are no "default" subvolumes already present. 1) Is there another way for me to backup /home/user other than creating a subvolume /home/user2 and copying everything from user to user2 in order to snapshot it?

  I have a requirement to create a webservice to expose certain items from a CMS as a web service, and I need some suggestions - the structure of the items is as such: item - field 1 - field 2 - field 3 - field 4 So, one would think that the class for this will be: public class MyItem { public string ItemName { get; set; } public List<MyField> Fields { get; set; } } public class MyField { public string FieldName { get; set; } public string FieldValue { get; set; } //they are always string (except - see below) } This works for when its always one level deep, but sometimes, one of the fields is actually a point to ANOTHER item (MyItem) or multiple MyItem (List<MyItem>), so I thought I would change the structure of MyField as follows, to make FieldValue as object; public class MyField { public string FieldName { get; set; } public object FieldValue { get; set; } //changed to object } So, now, I can put whatever I want in there. This is great in theory, but how will clients consume this? I suspect that when users make a reference to this web service, they won't know which object is being returned in that field? This seems like a not-so-good design. Is there a better approach to this?

• Auto Save and Auto Load Game onto the Device's Storage Concept Question

  I'm trying to make a simple app that will test the save and load state. Is it a good idea to make an app that has an auto save and load game feature only every time the newbies open the first app then continues it on the other day? I tried making a sprite that is moving, starting at the center. When I close and re-open the app, the sprite goes back to the center instead of the last coordinate where the sprite land on this part (i.e. at the top). The thing I want to know how the sequence of saving and loading goes like this: I open the app The starting sprite at the center. It displays a coordinate of the sprite plus number of times does the sprite move. I exit the app that automatically saves the game without notice. Finally, when I re-opened it, it automatically loads the game retaining the number of times the sprite move, coordinates, and the sprite's area landed. These steps above are similar, but not the sprite movement test app, to the sequence of saving and loading the game's level and record in Jewel Stackers for the Android app. And, by default, if there is no SD card in any tab or phone that runs on Android, does it automatically save/load onto the internal drive or the APK file itself? Is it also useful to use auto save and auto load feature for protecting and fetching informations (i.e. fastest time, last time where the sprite is located via coordinates, etc.)?

• Avoid read-write access to bad sectors on HDD to continue working on the HDD

  I have a HP Pavilion dv6446 notebook. It had Windows Vista Home premium. After 4.5+ years of usage, just recently it started malfunctioning. While working fine, its screen goes white or sometimes some thin black lines horizontally. Laptop freezes. Hard reboot works. Again it works for some 2 hrs or so, same error. To diagnose I did run the Memory and Hard disk check which is present in the Bios Setup. Memory test passed. Hard disk test returned an error saying something like - "Replace the hard disk". Bad.. Some sectors or platters have gone bad on the disk. (I confirmed this later by further tests mentioned below) Then I tried installing a Ubuntu 11.10. It listed 3 partitions /dev/sda1, sda2, sda2. It again gave error and could not install grub loader on /dev/sda1. Bad sectors. Then redid the Ubuntu installation, this time asked to to install the Ubuntu on /dev/sda3. and kept /dev/sda1 for /home. Installed fine, and works fine as well. Due to unavailability of WiFi/ Ethernet driver for that adapters under Ubuntu( at least I could not configure them and get the networking working at all), I decided to go back to reinstall windows Vista. It did install fine. I did not have to format one data partition which has my data. I just formatted one partition which installed Windows So in effect HDD has not undergone a full format here. Worked ok for 1 day. But same white screen and freeze happened. Looks like while it is in use, it accesses the bad sectors for storing some data and that's when it bombs. I am inclined to think HDD has not failed fully or crashed but has developed bad sectors. Else if it was a HDD crash, it would have refused to boot at all let alone install on it. Questions: Is there any HDD test check under windows or any such tools windows/linux based ewhere which can identify the bad sectors of the HDD and 'lock/isolate' them from further read-write access of any kind. • A question about "add-apt-repository"(gcc 4.7 or bumblebee)

  I install ubuntu 12.04 in my notebook and I use c++. I want to use c++11,so I want to upgrade my gcc to gcc4.7. I do like this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gcc-4.7 sudo apt-get install g++-4.7 but when I run "sudo apt-get install gcc-4.7", it just can find gcc-4.7-base not gcc-4.7, and when I run "sudo apt-get install g++-4.7", it can find nothing... Today, I want to install the "bumblebee" and do like this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia sudo reboot but when I run "sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia", it tells me the packages can't be find. • Turn off backlight without X server commands

  Fn + F6 - backlight turns off immediately, image stays (visible if shine something at the display) xset dpms force {off,suspend,standby} - backlight turns off slowly, image cleared. How to programmatically just turn off backlight on Acer Extensa 5220 laptop in Linux? It should work fast and should not touch image (unlike xset method). Ideally if I could rapidly switching backlight off and on emulate lower_than_minimum brightness level (ideally - to be hardly visible (but visible) at night).

• A rather long question about installation/uninstall

  Ok so here's the deal guys, last week I decided I want to install Ubunutu again because I really missed it. (Last time I had an ubunutu was 7.somehting) I downloaded 12.04 and isntalled it via bootable usb device. Knowing how dual boots works I cleared up some space on my hard disc before hand using the windows 7 built in disc manager. During Ubunutu's installation I thought that by choosing "Install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7" will automatically just use the space I cleared before, but apperentaly it did not since that partition is still 100% free space. On what partition is Ubunutu installed when using that method? And how can I uninstall it to re-install it back on the space I cleared up for it? Thank you very your time reading and helping!

• A question about the cobbler-ubuntu-import bash script

  I have been testing the latest cobbler for PXE booting Ubuntu 12.04.1-server-x86_64 and 12.10-server-x86_64 using a Scentific Linux 6.3 host to run the cobbler server. With the former, I got everything going. But with the later, I haven't been successful. As an attempt to figure things out, I downloaded Ubuntu's cobbler 2.2.2 source package. Examining the content, I soon noticed that Ubuntu's cobbler 2.2.2 came with a cobbler-ubuntu-import bash script. I reviewed the code and spotted something interesting: line 9 of the script states: 9 AUTO_KOPTS='log_host=@@server@@ log_port=514 priority=critical locale=en_US netcfg/choose_interface=auto' But after extensive googling, reading both Debian and Ubuntu's documentation about the debian-installer, I don't see these two kopts log_host and log_port documented anywhere. Putting it in the profile of my current test setup, even my cobbler server host does run rsyslogd, I don't see anything logged either. No, I don't have iptables and selinux on on the cobbler server host. Can anyone point to me where I can read more about these two options? Having the ability to log an installation to a remote central logging host would be really cool.
