• need help with acts_as_ferret and will_paginate to play nice together

  I have installed will_paginate and acts_as_ferret on my system for ruby rails. My paginate seems to work fine before installing acts_as_ferret. When I put in the code to do searching I get the following error: NoMethodError in Community#search Showing app/views/community/_result_summary.rhtml where line #3 raised: undefined method `total_entries' for []:Array Extracted source (around line #3): 1: <% if @users %> 2: <p> 3: Found <%= pluralize(@users.total_entries, "match") %>. 4: </p> 5: <% end %> If I take out the search function, paginate works but it's pointless because I can't do searches. • I need to stop execution during recursive algorithm

  Hey, I have a problem in choosing the right method to accomplish my goal. I'm working on Algorithms teaching system, I'm using C#. I need to divide my algorithm into steps, each step will contain a recursion. I have to stop execution after each step, user can then move to the next step(next recursion) using a button in my GUI. After searching, threads was the right choice, but I found several methods: (Thread.sleep/interrupt): didn't work, my GUI freezed !! (Suspend/Resume): I've read that it's a bad idea to use. (Waithandles): still reading about them. (Monitor wait/resume). I don't have much time to try and read all previous methods, please help me in choosing the best method that fits my system.Any suggestions are extremal welcomed.

• Microsoft Chart Control labels

  Hello, I've been searching for a while and browsing through the samples but could not find a solution to my problem. In Microsoft Chart Control I have created a line series that plots real-time data. As new data points are added, the chart margins will sometimes jump on the form. I have tried disabling the grid lines and have determined that the margins change when the x-axis label overlaps with the y-axis label. I have tried auto-fitting the labels but that does not seem to work probably because it treat x-axis and y-axis separately. Is there any way to prevent the overlap, or keep the labels and corresponding grid lines stationery and just change their value when the data scrolls? Thank you for your help.

• generic async loading method for page web scripts?

  The google analytics code went to an async load model some time back. I've noticed that a lot of the other scripts I use on many sites are causing slow load times - specifically the addthis script and the facebook like button. I'm noticing that the slow load times of these scripts is causing the google bot to calc my page loadtimes as being much slower than previously. I'd like to know if there is a standard/generic way of causing these scripts to load async as well, or perhaps a pointer to someone who has done the work for this already. Seems this would be a popular thing to do, but not much luck searching around.

• Union on ValuesQuerySet in django

  I've been searching for a way to take the union of querysets in django. From what I read you can use query1 | query2 to take the union... This doesn't seem to work when using values() though. I'd skip using values until after taking the union but I need to use annotate to take the sum of a field and filter on it and since there's no way to do "group by" I have to use values(). The other suggestions I read were to use Q objects but I can't think of a way that would work. Do I pretty much need to just use straight SQL or is there a django way of doing this? What I want is: q1 = mymodel.objects.filter(date__lt = '2010-06-11').values('field1','field2').annotate(volsum=Sum('volume')).exclude(volsum=0) q2 = mymodel.objects.values('field1','field2').annotate(volsum=Sum('volume')).exclude(volsum=0) query = q1|q2 But this doesn't work and as far as I know I need the "values" part because there's no other way for Sum to know how to act since it's a 15 column table.

• real time updates for new page events

  I know there's a few questions knocking around on this topic but none quite the same. I'm currently searching by location for all the pages relating to a particular geographic location and caching their events in a database. The problem being I have to currently loop through all the pages i'm watching frequently to check for updates. At the moment the 10,000 Pages I'm keeping track of takes a good while to update. It would be much neater (and nicer to fb) to be notified instead of polling. Does anyone know of a more efficient to do this? Thanks Ben

We need reliable messaging between our clients and the server, preferably over HTTP protocol. Besides the multiplayer functionality, we’ll also need a content delivery service. Could you please recommend a server-side technology for us, so we’ll start searching for the right people to hire? • Strategy to structure a search index in a relational database

  I am interested in suggestions for building an efficient and robust structure for indexing products in a new database I am building (i'm using MySql) When a product is entered through the form there are three parts I am interested in indexing for searching purposes. The product title The product description Tags The most important is title, followed by tags, followed by the description. I was thinking of using the following structure CREATE TABLE `searchindex` ( `id` INT NOT NULL , `word` VARCHAR( 255 ) NOT NULL , `weighting` INT NOT NULL , `product_id` INT NOT NULL , PRIMARY KEY ( `id` ) ) Then each time a product is created I would split apart the title, description and tags (removing common words) and award them a weighting. Then it is trivial to select out the words and corresponding products and order them by weighting. Is there a better way to do this? I would be worried that this strategy would slow down over time and as the database filled up.

  So I purchased a computer recently and have been trying to customise the display. Radeon 6800 series Ubuntu 10.10 I have three 22inch 1080P lcd monitors that are mounted together. Everything is working smooth. How do I get the 'big-desktop' display where I have one enormous display across all monitors? Linux - ATI Catalyst Control Center 11.2 does not give me an option to 'group' my profiles like the pictures on their site show with Windows. I have been searching all over for help. • Page content bleeding past footer, dynamic resize?

  Hey all im learning as i go with editing CSS and PHP and ive manage to put together a layout, looks fine on the main page, but I noticed the content is not stretching properly height wise when i goto click on the 3D gallery. What steps do i take to allow it to be dynamically resized with the content in it? • Creating multiple markers in Google Maps using XML

  I'm almost sure this question has been asked before, but for the love of me I just can't find the answer anywhere. Basically what I want to do is create multiple markers on a custom Google Map I'm building. I already have an XML file with the coordinates (lat/lng) and title of each item. I'd like to take the data from the XML file and use it to create markers on the map. I've found how to do this using KML files and MySQL/PHP, but I need to know how to do it in Javascript. One more thing: I have a .xml file of my own, so it won't be like I'll be getting the data from a webpage because I believe (from research I've done today) that the code for that may be different. If anyone knows if this has been posted somewhere else before, could you please direct me there? I've literally been searching all day, this is my last resort. Thanks a ton!!!

• PHP: passing GET between multiple pages

  I'm building a set of pages where I have a number of GET variables and it is often valuable to keep passing it along to the next page. This leads to ugly code where I have to have "if this $_GET variable is set, dynamically add it to this hyperlink". This is, in many senses, not a problem; but I had the thought "there must be a better way to do this", I mean after all basically all I want is to take the '?' and everything after it and append it to the links on that page, it would seem this should be rather simple (or at least possible to do in a for loop). I tried google searching but couldn't find anything, so I figured I'd see if any of you happen to know. Why not use SESSION? Because these pages need to be capable of being bookmarked. Thank you.

  Currently all web apps are deployed using seperate config files: <!-- <import bean.... production/> --> <import bean... development/> This has disadvantages, even if you only need to swap out one config file, that I'm sure everyone is familiar with (wondering what just deployed without searching through XML is one of them) I want to add Logging to my application that basically says 'RUNNING IN PRODUCTION MODE', with a description of the services deployed and what mode they are working in. RUNNING IN PRODUCTION MODE Client Service - Production Messaging Service - Local and so on... Is this possible in Spring using a conventional deployment (putting a war on a server)? What other things do people do to manage deployments and software configurations? If not, what other ways could you achieve something similar?

• Adding a new view to a Window-based app (re: MapKit tutorial)

  I'm trying add a new view in a window-based application but not really getting anywhere. I've been going through a great MapKit tutorial lately, http://mithin.in/2009/06/22/using-iphone-sdk-mapkit-framework-a-tutorial/ and have successfully set it up and added some further buttons and customizations. However I've gotten stuck at what I assume ought to be a brain-dead simple step. I have added a toolbar to the bottom of the app, and a 'settings' style button. Following this I created a SettingsViewController complete with it's own view. Now I'd like to connect them but I've had absolutely no luck trying to figure out how to do this. I've also gone through several other good tutorials lately, http://miketeo.net/wp/index.php/2008/08/31/simple-iphone-tutorial-part-1.html http://blog.webscale.co.in/?p=228 http://www.iphonesdkarticles.com/2009/01/uitableview-searching-table-view.html but I've gotten lost trying to tie these two bits together. • measuring performance - using real clicks vs "ab" command

  I have a web site in closed beta, developed in Django, runs with Mysql on Debian. In the last few days, the main page has been showing a slowdown. For every ten clicks, one or two receives extremely slow response (10 secs or more), others are as fast as they used to be. When I was searching for the problem, I ran into this issue that I couldn't grasp: top command shows that when I request the main page, mysql shoots up to 90% - 100% cpu usage. I get the page just as the cpu use gets back to normal. So, I thought, it is db. Then I called ab with parameters -n 1000 -c 5, I got decent performance, about 100 pages per second, just as it was before the slowdown. I would imagine a worse performance as 10-20% of requests take 10 secs to load. Is this conflict between ab and "real" clicks normal, or am I using ab in a wrong configuration?

  I've been searching on how to solve this issue but could not find any real and working solution. User model: validates_attachment_content_type :avatar, :content_type = ['image/jpeg', 'image/pjpeg', 'image/x-png', 'image/png', 'image/gif'] Unnecessary error shows up when invalid file type is uploaded: Avatar /tmp/sample,23283,0.txt is not recognized by the 'identify' command. Server details: Ubuntu and Debian which identify results to /usr/bin/identify Specifying command path does not solve the issue: Paperclip.options[:command_path] = "/usr/bin" Any ideas? • Finding Errant Output to System.out in Large Java Program

  Hi, We have a large java code base [~1 M Lines]. Buried (somewhere) in the code base is some old debug output to System.out that we want to remove (its cluttering things up). The problem is: out code base is so large that we can't easily find where the output is coming from. What we want is a way to see where System.out.println is getting called from (like a stack trace from an exception or some such). Its not suitable to debugging -- the errant output is coming from some errant thread somewhere etc. Any ideas on how to track the source of this errant output down? PS: 99.99% of calls to System.out are legit, and we have thousands of them, so simply searching the code base for System.out calls is not a solution!

  I've been searching stackoverflow for about an hour now and couldn't find any topics related, so I apologize if this is a duplicate question. My inquery is this. Is there a point at which there are too many tables in a database? Even if the structure is well organized, thought out, and perfectly facilitates the design intent? I have a database that is quickly approaching 40 tables - about 10 main ones, and over 30 ancillary tables (junction tables, 'enumeration' tables, etc). Am I just a bad developer - or should I be trying something different? It seems like so many to me, I'm really afraid at how it will impact the performance of the project. I have done a lot of condensing where possible, grouped similar things where possible, etc. The database is built in MS-SQL 2008.

• <transport> tag within the ServicesReferences.ClientConfig

  I've created a WCF service and added it to an existing Silverlight application that I am working on. When I run the silverlight application in debug mode it fails when I reference the WCF web service. Unrecognized element '' in service reference configuration. Note that only a subset of the Windows Communication Foundation configuration functionality is available in Silverlight. After searching around apparently the following line is causing the app to fail: <transport> <extendedProtectionPolicy policyEnforcement="Never" /> </transport> After removing the above lines everything works. What is the issue here? Should I believing this code in and configuring something else?
