• Website Sitemaps and <priority>, is it working?

  Hi, My "Privacy Policy" page is seen more important by Google than other really more important pages on my website. I'm currently creating a script to generate a sitemap, should I bother with the priority? How do you effectively assign priorities to pages? I consider one of my page important but the page have less content than another one less important to my eyes... but maybe Google bot will see it the other way around. If my degree of "importantness" differs from the one of Google, will I get penalized on the ranking for a particular page? Thank you for sharing your black art with us :P

• fd.seek() IOError: [Errno 22] Invalid argument

  My Python Interpreter (v2.6.5) raises the above error in the following codepart: fd = open("some_filename", "r") fd.seek(-2, os.SEEK_END) #same happens if you exchange the second arg. w/ 2 data=fd.read(2); last call is fd.seek() Traceback (most recent call last): File "bot.py", line 250, in <module> fd.seek(iterator, os.SEEK_END); IOError: [Errno 22] Invalid argument The strange thing with this is that the exception occurs just when executing my entire code, not if only the specific part with the file opening. At the runtime of this part of code, the opened file definitely exists, disk is not full, the variable "iterator" contains a correct value like in the first codeblock. What could be my mistake? • Is it possible to write a Skype client?

  Is there any libraries for this? I will put this on a server and it will be a windows service. And Skype will not be installed on server. So Skype API will not mean anything I guess. Edit: I am sorry for not being clear. Here is what i need: I just need a Skype client which will act like a small bot. A person who uses Skype will ask it something like: print totalCreditsLoadedToday And it will answer: 567867867 credits. I need to write a windows service which will accept text messages from Skype and will send responses as text message (a very simple Skype client). I don't need voip support but Skype is a, errr customer requirement lets say. (And yes I suggested Google Talk but not accepted) But i need to achieve this without installing Skype to the server.

• Python unicode issues (2.6)

  I'm currently working on a irc bot for a multi-lingual channel, and I'm encountering some issues with unicode which are proving nearly impossible to solve. No matter what configuration of unicode encoding I seem to try, the list function which the below code sits within just flat out does nothing (c.notice is a class function which sends a NOTICE command to the irc server) or when it does do something, spits out something which obviously isn't encoded. The command should be sending ??, but instead it seems hellbent on sending å¤©å­ with a previous configuration of the same commands. The one I have specified below is of the 'send nothing' variety. I haven't worked with unicode before this, and thus I am quite stuck. I'm also positive that I'm doing this completely wrong as a consequence. • BackgroundWorker and WebBrowser Control

  Is it possible/recommended to use background worker threads with the web browser control? I am creating a bot that searches google for keywords, then checks for sites in the first 10 pages to see if a site is ranked. The user can provide a maximum of 20 sites to check, and can use proxies. So ideally I'd like to have 5 threads working at once. Is it possible? I might have heard somewhere that there are problems with WebBrowser control and threads.

• Another answer to the CAPTCHA problem?

  Most sites at least employ server access log checking and banning along with some kind of bot prevention measure like a CAPTCHA (those messed-up text images). The problem with CAPTCHAs is that they poss a threat to the user experience. Luckily they now come with user friendly features like refresh and audio versions. Anyway, like linux vs windows, it isn't worth the time of a spammer to customize and/or build a script to handle a custom CAPTCHA example that only pertains to one site. Therefore, I was wondering if there might be better ways to handle the whole CAPTCHA thing. In A Better CAPTCHA Peter Bromberg mentions that one way would be to convert the image to HTML and display it embedded in the page. On http://shiflett.org/ Chris simply asks users to type his name into an input. Examples like this are ways to simplifying the CAPTCHA experience while decreasing the value for spammers. Does anyone know of more good examples I could use or see any problem with the embedded image idea?

So what are the guidelines for good webcrawler 'Etiquette'? Things that spring to mind: Observe Robot.txt instructions Limit the number of simultaneous requests to the same domain Don't follow ad links? Stopping the crawler from clicking on ads - This one is particularly on my mind at the moment... how do i stop my bot from 'clicking' on ads? if it is going straight to the url in the ad is it counted as a click?

  I am working on an AI bot for the game Defcon. The game has cities, with varying populations, and defensive structures with limited range. I'm trying to work out a good algorithm for placing defence towers. Cities with higher populations are more important to defend Losing a defence tower is a blow, so towers should be placed reasonably close together Towers and cities can only be placed on land So, with these three rules, we see that the best kind of placement is towers being placed in a ring around the largest population areas (although I don't want an algorithm just to blindly place a ring around the highest area of population, sometime there might be 2 sets of cities far apart, in which case the algorithm should make 2 circles, each one half my total towers). I'm wondering what kind of algorithms might be used for determining placement of towers?

• generic async loading method for page web scripts?

  The google analytics code went to an async load model some time back. I've noticed that a lot of the other scripts I use on many sites are causing slow load times - specifically the addthis script and the facebook like button. I'm noticing that the slow load times of these scripts is causing the google bot to calc my page loadtimes as being much slower than previously. I'd like to know if there is a standard/generic way of causing these scripts to load async as well, or perhaps a pointer to someone who has done the work for this already. Seems this would be a popular thing to do, but not much luck searching around.

  Hi I am getting the following errors reported by ELMAH on my asp.net mvc 2 site for javascript files, images etc. System.Web.HttpException: The remote host closed the connection I have done some research and it appears that the user/bot is clicking a link on the site before the page has fully loaded. Now this error never occurs on a controller action but always on a file that is on disk. e.g. /Content/CmsImages/logo.png /Content/CmsImages/MemberImages/Photo-001605.jpg /Content/jquery.tickertype.js So this means that all static files are being routed through the mvc pipeline. What options do I have?

  The other day I found myself addicted to a flash game and frustrated by the thing at the same time. In a moment of frustration with the game I thought I would make a 'bot' to beat it for me. Well, I really wouldn't, but it made me realize: I don't know how to interact with another application in a way to do this. Which brings me to the question, how would one take screenshots of another running application and interact with it with the keyboard and mouse. Ideally the solution would be in a managed language like c#. When doing the background reading the net was drowning with articles on scrapping HTML. There were not many articles on actually screen scrapping an application. Diverse answers are appreciated as I’m really looking at surveying what’s out there.

  So I understand this may come across as a open question, but I need away to solve this issue. I can either make the site do ajax request that load the body content, or I can have links that re-loads the whole page. I need the site to be SEO compliant, and I would really like the header to not re-load when the content changes, the reason is that we have a media player that plays live audio. Is there away that if Google BOT or someone without ajax enabled it does the site like normal href but if ajax or javascript allowed do it the ajax way.

  Basically im trying to build a bot that can send a message using one of many accounts out to a user and be able to receive messages to that account it originally used process and do whatever I need it to do. So far I found the JAXL library (http://code.google.com/p/jaxl/) but based on examples it is only able to handle one user at a time. Any suggestions or ideas? thank you in advanced. btw if there is anyway to make the server automatically forward those messages to another program or whatever that works just as well.

• WebClient.DownloadString() Not Producing Exact HTML

  So here's the deal. I'm creating a spider bot for a website that scans all the product pages and records the product data. I'm using C# and the WebClient library to download the HTML string. The site I'm crawling must be specially made because the HTML that is received from WebClient.DownloadString() is different than the HTML that I get when I view the source of the HTML when visiting it on a browser. This seems intentional because the only info I can't get is the price. Does anyone know a workaround for this problem or can anyone explain what is happening? Thanks.

  I've been stuck on something for the past day. I'm building a RoR bot, and part of it involves signing up for an email account with mail.com. I've automated all the filling out of the form, apart from the captcha (Recaptcha). I'll be using the deathbycaptcha Ruby gem. However, in order to have the captcha solved, I'll need to get either its ID or its URL. While this shows up when I "enable form details" with the Firefox Web Developer toolbar, it doesn't seem to be in the source. How can I find it out? I'm using Watir. Thanks! Joe

And then i add the UIScrollView in xib (bot of textview are made in xib too). and this is the picture if this hierarchy : in the viewDidLoad method, i add this code : - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; [scrollTextView addSubview:lineNumberTextView]; [scrollTextView addSubview:_codeTextView]; [lineNumberTextView bringSubviewToFront:scrollTextView]; [_codeTextView bringSubviewToFront:scrollTextView]; } but when i tap on the 2nd textview, the keyboard is not appear. • Getting service unavailable message when sending messages to google xmpp using wokkel

  Hi, I made a wokkel (twisted python) bot to send and receive messages from the google xmpp service. Everything (auth, presence) etc works fine. One of the rquirements of our prject is that we need to send broadcast messages to everyone in the list. Normal messages and replies work fin, but when i snd a broadcast message, i get this service unavailable error 503 message. There are about 1000 user in my contact list. Is this some bug in the code or is it google policy to prevent rapid messaging. Also, how do other google bots cater to a large contact base ? does google provide a commercial solution for such applications ? Thanks

  I have some kind of object model and I need to filter and sort it's nodes for some kind of property. What kinds of automated systems exist to generate and select properties of the object model that correlate to what I want? (I'm intentionally being abstract and non-specific) I'm thinking of a system that works kind of like spam filters or supervised classification systems in that given an example data set it identifies rules that find nodes of interest. However I'm looking for a more general system in that it shouldn't require any design time information about the object model. It should work equality well as a spam filter on e-mail, a bug finder on a code base, an interest filter in a newsgroup or bot accounts finder on a social networking site. As long as it can explore the object model via reflection and be given a set of "interesting" nodes, it should be able to find rules that will find more nodes like them.

  I need to develop a workflow for a call center. A bot will ask some predefined questions to the caller. Based on the answers the workflow will decide the questions to ask and finally redirect the caller to a representative that has required skills. Based on the scenario above, I have several questions. How can I make the workflow "wait" between asking a question to the caller and receiving response from the caller? Do I have to use HandleExternalEvent? If so do I have to define an event for every question? Flowchart workflow seems to be the best solution but I can't imagine how to handle this waiting issue right now. Any help is appreciated.

  Hello, I'm making a hit counter. I have a database and I store the IP and $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']; of the visitors. Now I need to add a filter, so I can put away the hits, that are made by bots. I found out, that many bots usually keep some common words in the $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']; , so I's like to make and array of words, that would keep the bot from displaying in the results. Here is what I have now: while($row = mysql_fetch_array($yesterday, MYSQL_ASSOC)) { <-- Here I need a code, that would run through an array and check, if it containts the keywords and if it doesn't ... just count++; -- } Also if you know any other way of detecting and removing the bots from the results, I'd be verry thankful.   Well, not my server. My friend found it and sent it to me, trying to make sense of it. What it appears to be is a PHP IRC bot, but I have no idea how to decode it and make any sense of it. Here is the code: <?eval(gzinflate(base64_decode('some base 64 code here')))?> So I decoded the base64, and it output a ton of strange characters, I'm guessing either encrypted or a different file type, like when you change a .jpg to a .txt and open it. But I have no idea how to decode this and determine its source. Any help?

• Whats the best way of using MVC + ajax (jquery) to load page content, aspx or ascx or both

  I want to have a menu that when I click replaces the content of a "main" div with content from a mvc view. This works just fine if I use a .aspx page, but any master.page content is then doubled (like the and any css/js). If I do the same but uses a .ascx user control the content is loaded without the extras, but if any browser loads the menu item directly (ie search bot's or someone with JS disabled), the page is displayed without the master.page content. The best solution I've found so far is to create the content as a .ascx page, then have a .aspx page load this if it's called directly from the menu link, while the ajax javascript would modify the link to use only the .ascx. This leads to a lot duplication though, as every user control needs it's own .aspx page. I was wondering if there is any better way of doing this? Could for example the master.page hide everything that's not from the .aspx page if it was called with parameter ?ajax=true?

How can I let google know what is there so people can find the site through a search engine. What programming techniques could I use to give more content to the google bot. I will have some overview and demonstration screens to tempt the users but will these five to ten pages of content be enough for the search engines. The key work is quite a highly sort one and there is quite alot of competition. And before anyone asks the site is not a subscription porn site (Sadly)
