• Router used as ethernet bridge wont show up

  I have a Netgear router in my living room that has the wireless signal. It is connected to a Powerline plug that goes up to my bedroom. That is plugged into another router that is used as an ethernet hub. It's cables go into my PS3 and my server. The second router shows up as a hidden network on my laptop, and I can connect to it. But it is not listed as an attached device on my main router, and my laptop says that it connects straight to the main router, not the second one. How can I connect to this router? Aside from swapping the two? Thanks in advance.

• RocketRaid gives me stuttering computer

  I have a SANS DIGITAL TowerRAID TR8M-BP (with the RocketRaid 622 raid device) with 5 x SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB 5400 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s harddrives in a raid 5. It connects via 2-esata cables. My drivers are up to date. When I'm writing data to the drives my computer stutters (meaning freezes for a 1/2 second every 2 seconds or so). My screen freezes, my music goes into a loop, its really annoying. I get the same thing in windows 7 as I do in linux. The only difference is it seems to happen less in linux, but occassionally linux will crash (I've never had linux crash for any other reason, so I'm assuming they have poor linux drivers and kernal mod). Any tips for how to deal with this? Thanks

• ASUS P5B Plus motherboard - no any drives found - how to restore RAID array?

  We have a small server machine with an ASUS P5B Plus motherboard and 4 SATA HDDs. The HDDs were configured in a RAID10 array. Up until now, everything worked fine, but now the system doesn't recognize the drives. BIOS is set to RAID, jMicron controller is set to RAID, yet I can't see any of the drives in the BIOS setup, and jMicron BIOS tells me "no any drives found" The HDDs all spin up, I hear no clicking sounds or anything that would suggest HDD error. I did a search on this problem and replaced the SATA cables as suggested, but nothing's changed. What I have in mind is checking the CMOS battery and resetting the BIOS to use IDE mode, but I don't know if it will ruin the RAID system on the HDDs. It is not a critical server and there's only one database running on it (which I have backup of), but I don't want to setup the server from scratch if not necessary. What should I try to restore the RAID array and put the server back to working order?

• New power supply, now computer doesn't recognise hard drive?

  Ok, I bought a new power supply, because my old one was too damn loud. I hooked it up to my PC, turned it on, everything is looking fine, start up detects my DVD drive, 2 hard disks.. then I get the message "BOOT FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISK". Now I've seen some other people talk about going into BIOS and changing the start up to the HDD and not the CD.. well I've done that and it doesn't help. If I let windows load up and it asks me to which partition I wish to install windows, no partition is present. It's as if after the initial start up the drives arn't being found. I plugged my old (but loud) PSU back in, connected up all the cables, and it works perfectly. Why does the new PSU not detect my HDD's after the first BIOS screen start up? Any ideas? :)

Task Portforward port 29000 from office computer. Problem Once I connected wan and lan cables I just had to set static lan ip (on server) and plug in switch with office computers into second nic. Then just right click on wan nic and select share internet connection. All office computers were assigned with an IP address 192.168.0.XXX and Gateway 192.168.0.1 (server). Now I have to open port and portfoward it from computer 192.168.0.190 (static ip, manual). Using this guide http://www.rosscode.com/blog/index.php?title=port_forwarding_in_windows_2003&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 I faced a problem. Before enabling "RRA" I had to unshare internet connection (wan interface) and was able to setup network. Now how do I setup a network within "RRA" and share internet with private network? • House Wiring for Ethernet/Coax/Power

  Hoping this is the right place to post, the rest didn't seem to fit. If not, I apologize. Remodeling my house and want to wire up each room with Ethernet/coax wall ports. Both Ethernet, coax and power will be running through the sub-floor. I've read that there needs to be 2 ft between power cables and Ethernet to limit/prevent interference. Is this true? If not, does anyone know what the distance is? Thanks!

• Frequent connection drops when playing online games (StarCraft 2, Battlefield 3) and behind NAT - how to diagnose?

  I am having some trouble with (I suspect) my wireless router. It's connected to the internet with a regular lan cable and has a static, public IP address. Our two home PCs connect to the router with regular lan cables, plus there's a laptop which connects over wifi. diagram: Internet | | <- isp-supplied cat5 ethernet cable | D-Link D300 ...wifi... laptop / \ / <- cable -> \ PC1 PC2 The PCs and laptop are behind NAT and share the router's public IP. The router is a D-Link D300. PC1 is used for online gaming and I'm experiencing frequent "connection dropped" errors when playing Battlefield 3, StarCraft 2 and the Diablo 3 beta; but not with TeamFortress 2 or the Tribes Ascend beta. The issue goes away when I remove the router and connect PC1 directly to the ISP's cable. I have also tried disconnecting PC2 and the laptop, leaving PC1 as the only machine connected to the router - doesn't help. How can I diagnose what precisely the issue is?

• Re-cased my computer now the power plug keeps shorting

  I've just re-cased my computer. I got the new case free and thought I'd be able to swap everything over myself but apparently I've done something wrong. I'm OK with components generally but wasn't totally confident about doing this. So, my question is, when setting up a new PC or moving old components into a new case, what could I have done which causes the power cable plug to short/fuse when I plug it in?. Is this likely to be an issue with the cables from my PSU, or could it be the internal case connectors? What steps would you take to diagnose the problem? • When to use MySQL replication or DRBD for HA on Xen VM?

  I'm setting up a database which needs to be needs to provide High Availabilty. My primary concern is high performance and robustness (I don't want something that will fail fast and badly). The database is accessed by the application at an average of 300 qps. It's will run on Xen VMs and it has some InnoDB tables as well as MyISAM tables. The VMs are connected via ethernet 100Mbit/s ethernet cables. Which of the two - MySQL replication or DRBD - would you recommend in such a situation? Or should I use DRBD to make the master database Highly Available and use MySQL replication on the slaves? I'm a developer so these things are all not so easy for me to make a sound judgement.

  Is it possible and advisable to use an Internal Hard Drive as an External Hard drive also. I wanted to install SAP ECC 6 on my system which has only 250 GB but atleast 300 GB is required.I wanted to buy an External Drive first, then I heard loading SAP on an External would make it extremely slow. I'll be using it only as a beginer so even if it is a little slow i don't mind. Is it feasible to run such a big application from an External Hard disk ? So can i purchase a 500 or 1 TB Internal Hard disk and use it as an External too by fitting it with the necessary USB 3.0 Hard drive cases and cables ? or should i purchase a External and load SAP onto it ?   I have just bought 60 meters of CAT6e cables, sold as "4 pair UTP RJ45". I have looked at various videos on Youtube but I cannot determine the correct wiring. all the colors of the cable I saw there are different from mine. Mine is untwisted, and it is not color coded. I have 8 pin connectors all of a single color. How should I wire this cable? EDIT THE PACKAGE DOES SAY TWISTED but they are not (twisted).

• Which hard disk drive is which?

  I want to know which hard disk drive corresponds to which device path. It's trivial to match the hard disk stats (brand, size) with the dev path, but I want more. I want to know which drive is which inside my case. What's a good way to go about getting this info? Rules: I am a lazy bum. I don't want to tear apart my server to remove all the drives, then add back one by one. A reboot is acceptable. The drives are inconveniently scrunched together in the case. All label information is hidden. The case can be opened. Most disks are SATA, so theoretically hot swappable. Unplugging cables is fair game. Bonus: For a cli only solution. I'll award answer to the best/easiest gui or cli answer, and give a bounty to the next-best answer of the other kind. Or maybe the other way around, because the bounty is worth more points.

  I was told that any monitor could be turned into a touch screen if you have the right software. This has got to be old news, or even a myth. Please shed some light on this if you can. Am I wrong? My primary question is which cable would normally be used to hook up a touch screen. Would you need 2 cables for this (one for the monitor, one to receive touch events?), or is a single cable going to have data in both directions (perhaps an HDMI?)

• HighPoint RAID Controller can't see drives

  I've just built a system with a HighPoint 2720 RAID controller. Everything appears to be OK, except that the controller doesn't see any of my drives - the RAID BIOS displays "ERROR. No Suitable disks". I have tried a WD SATA, Seagate SATA, and OCZ Vertex 3 SATA. I am using MiniSAS to 4x SATA breakout cables. How do I get this working? I've tried to sign up for HighPoint support, but their support site doesn't appear to be functioning correctly.

  I hi guys i'm trying to accomplish something: i have a modem (ADSL) which servers as a wireless router as well. There's a laptop connected to it through cable. On the other room i have a laptop which is connected through the router wirelessly. Now the problem is, since i have other appliances that need to get connected but are not wifi cable i have another wifi router.   when the traffic for a website grows i dont think one apache server in a vps is the way to go. i would like to know more about how i then should set up the server side architecture. im not that much into hardware stuff (what kind of cables to use, different cpu architectures etc), but interested in the software architecture: what servers (apache, nginx, squid, varnish etc) to use and how they interact with each other one server in one machine? how many mysql servers. how many apache, nginx servers and so on. how the "machine court" looks like. are there any good books about this area?

• How does a private intra network connect to the internet?

  Yesterday I visited the offices of RailTel - a public company in India that provides communication backbone to the Indian Railways, they had a very sophisticated setup of Optical Fiber cables for data transmission. They said that this is a private network for internal use only. Then when I was in the Exchange Office - the main communication office, a place where they actually use those communication channels. They said that we could connect to the Intranet and as well as the Internet! My question is, that how is this possible? How can privately laid optical fibers connect globally? On google, I picked up the term internet exhange? But this has got me confused further, why would a private network want to go to this exchange? Please explain me in very simple terms, how does this all work? If this is just a connection of wires, then why charge so much for little bandwidth? Thanks.

• What is the cause of a vertical white line on an LCD monitor?

  This just happened yesterday when I was browsing the internet. My AOC N941Sw monitor is suddenly showing a thin horizontal white line near the center of the screen. The white line distorts the images. I tried checking the cables for loose connection and dust particles but the white line is still here. There are times the entire image below the horizontal white line flickers and move up and down. When this happens, I just turn off the monitor then the flicker goes away but the white horizontal line is still there. After a few minutes, the same thing happen all over again. Is there a way to fix this?

• Crackling sound from right laptop speaker

  This problem lasts for several months already (first on Ubuntu 13.10, not on 12.04. I get very loud cracking/popping sound from my right Asus K56C's speaker, I searched everything but could not get rid of it. Several facts: There is no problem on Windows 8. It has nothing to do with applications running because it appears even before login screen of Ubuntu. Also same problem if I boot from Live USB. Muting sound will remove noise, but lowering volume has no effect. Inserting any headphones, removes the noise. If I disconnect power cable while there is noise, noise will always disappear, but only if there is no music playing. If I start playing music, noise again appear even with power cable disconnected. Sometimes that noise disappears for 1-4 weeks, and then again appears for no reason and lasts from several days to weeks. That noise is always the same, and I tried adding tsched=0 to /etc/pulse/default.pa. Also tried this PositionReporting fix, with no effect. I also tried disconnecting all the cables and removing all electronic devices around laptop, but it has no effect. I also tried removing Pulse Audio, didn't change anything. Would be great if someone has some real solution for this problem.

• HDDs randomly falling off raid

  I really need help on this it's Saturday long weekend.No customer service help:( .I recently build new server/light duty desktop.Main purpose is only file sharing.Raid configuration :Adaptec 6805 ,8x 3TB HDD WD Red,Intel RES2SV240 expander,Raid 6,set in Intel mobo DZ 77GA-70K.I upgraded firmwares, but I'm having strange problem. During Build Verify segment 7 got missing.I just reinsert drive into hot swap bay and it started to rebuild Array.After rebuild was done another segments 0 and 5 gone missing while build/verify.I reinserted drives and now I'm praying that raid is going to rebuild successfully from remaining 6 drives,because i already transfer some data on it(I know it was bad idea).I checked S.M.A.R.T on missing drives , it only says link failure and aborted commands on one of them.No Errors on HDDs.Connections and cables are good.I added 2 fans blowing on RAID controller because it was getting too hot, so I guess overheating shouldn't be issue.What can be possibly wrong? • Removing DVI connectors stuck in video card ports

  I need some help removing a couple of DVI connectors which are stuck in my video card ports. I don't know why they were screwed in so tightly in the first place but they won't move. I need to replace hardware in the machine, but doing so with the cables connected and the box in its current position is nearly impossible. I've tried pliers with grips to loosen the screws holding the cable, and I've tried a screwdriver, the latter ended up breaking off the plastic. Neither worked. I'm at a loss as to what to do and I'm very frustrated. Can I get some suggestions?

• random hard disk errors

  For the past 2 years or so (4 year old custom build) I've been getting random moments where everything stops responding (or takes a very long time to respond) followed by I/O and hdd not detected errors on restart. To fix it, all I usually need to do is unplug my SATA cables from the hdd and mobo and plug them back in again and the problem disappears, at least for a little while (it ranges anywhere from a day to a few months time). Sometimes even a startup repair does the job. I've done multiple reformats and have also ran chkdsk more times than I can remember and both do not seem to help in the long run. Both the drives seem to be exhibiting the same problem. Have both my hdds been "dying" for the past couple of years, even though they are fully functional besides these occasional hiccups? Does the issue lie elsewhere? All feedback is appreciated. System specs: Biostar Tpower i45 mobo 2x WD Caviar 640GB hdds Zalman 750w psu Radeon 5870 gpu 2x2gb Gskill DDR2 ram Win7 64

• Windows 8.1 triple monitors - can't enable all 3 at the same time

  Today decided to update from Win8 Pro to Win8.1. Everything was fine with enabled 3 monitors (Extended mode, not Eyefinity) at the same time. But after update can't enable 3d monitor, only 2 could be enabled at the same time. Did current things before write question here: Remove all drivers, reboots, re-installs Different cable input's and orders of enabling Tried to enable each monitor from Catalyst and Windows Screen Resolution Spec's: Windows 8.1 Pro XFX HD7970 3 of LG E2442 Cables: 2 DVI 1 HDMI Googled for many time and found one of possible solution is to buy ACTIVE mini DisplayPort to DVI/HDMI, but maybe there are some another more simple solutions?

• Monitor does not turn on until reset

  I have a system with an ATI 4870 hooked up to a Samsung P2350 using DVI. My motherboard is a GA-EP45 DS4P with the latest BIOS. The situation is: I turn on my PC (with the power switch) I get a blank screen I hit reset and the PC boots up normally, i.e. the monitor turns on and This has been the case for a couple of months (Was away for a while, came back and it was the same case). I was hoping the situation would somehow fix itself but alas, nothing. I have tried numerous settings in the BIOS (Combinations of different settings of the ACPI and power saving options) and have tried different cables. Has anyone experienced this before? I don't know where to go from here. It is pretty infuriating because it means I can't put my computer to sleep, as the monitor won't come on. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

  Hello all. I have just inherited a network at my work- 1 primary server and about 65 computers running XP. All machines have Gigabit ethernet cards and all are connected through Gigabit switches and cat. 6 cables. The workstations send large numbers of image files to the server where they are held until they need to go to a printer. And I'm talking Gigs of files. We get a network slowdown when large number of files are coming from the workstations at the same time large numbers are also going the the printers. All machines have to be on the same subnet because of some proprietary software. Is there anything I can do to lessen this logjam? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
