• How do you get a high paying job programming in finance?

  Hi, I'm interested in eventually programming for a financial company. Unfortunately, I have a degree in linguistics with a minor in CS along with 4 years experience in .NET. I picked .NET because I thought that it would be more used in the financial world. I've heard some horror stories about badly done VBA Excel programming and being way underpaid...but then I've heard great stories about highly skilled C++ programming along with high pay (including some feedback to previous questions). I just get the impression that unless you have a MS in CS from a top 10/20 school, it might not be realistic. For those of you doing programming for bankers/traders, how did you break in?

• How can be data oriented programming applied for GUI system?

  I've just learned basics of Data oriented programming design, but I'm not very familiar with that yet. I've also read Pitfalls of Object Oriented Programming GCAP 09. It seems that data oriented programming is much better idea for games, than OOP. I'm just creating my own GUI system and it's completely OOP. I'm thinking if is data oriented programming design applicable for structured things like GUI. The main problem I see is that every type widget has different data, so I can hardly group them into arrays. Also every type of widget renders differently so I still need to call virtual functions.

  Here's how I see it. There's machine code and it's all that the computers needs in order to run something. The computers don't care about programming languages. It doesn't matter to them if the machine code comes from Perl, Python or PHP. Programming languages exist to serve programmers. Some programming languages run slower then others but that's not because there is something wrong with them. It's often because they do more things that otherwise programmers would do and by doing these things, they do better what they are supposed to do - serve programmers. So why are slower programming languages considered worse than faster ones?

Looking at the release date for the popular ones I got somewhat close but I didn't look at less obvious ones, programming languages which are either dead or very little use nowadays.   I like XP (extreme programming) especially the part where there are 2 programmers at the same screen since often a problem's solution gets closer if only you explain what you're doing and pair programming forces you to explain what your doing. Last 10 years or so, the XP style of working seems to have gone out of date in favor of the working methodologies Agile and/or Kanban. Why? Since XP to me seems a veru good way to work and is a lot about the programming where Agile and Kanban are more about processes.

  I tried installing a trial version of SAP NetWeaver 7.1 on Windows Vista on my laptop but I couldn't succeed. Then I tried installing SAP Web Application Server 6.20. For example recently I had asked a question Reading xml document in firefox in stack overflow. Soufiane Hassou gave me a link to w3schools, where I found a example on parsing xml document, I understood how the example works, but I copied the code and tweaked it according to my requirement, since I don't like typing much. Edit: The setPosition() call seems to perform a translation of the camera toward the new position, therefore the camera stops at the first obstacle it encounters on its way.

  I love Rich Hickey, Clojure and Haskell and I get it when he talks about functions and the unreliability of side-effecting code. However I work in an environment where nearly all the functions I write have to read from the database, write to the database, make HTTP requests, decrement a user's balance, modify a frontend HTML component based on a click action, return different results based on the URI or the POST body. We also use PHP for the frontend, which is littered with functions like parse_str(), which modifies an object in place. All of these are side-effecting to one degree or another. Given these constraints and the side-effecting nature of the logic I'm coding, what can I do to make my code more reliable and function-able?

• Is “Application Programming Interface” a bad name?

  Application programming interface seems like a bad name for what it is. Is there a reason it was named such? I understand that people used to call them Advanced Programming Interfaces and then renamed to Application Programming Interface. Is that why it is poorly named? Why is it not named Application (to) Programmer Interface. I guess I'm just confused of the meaning behind that name? I write more about my confusion around the name here: BREAKING DOWN THE WORD “APPLICATION PROGRAMMING INTERFACE” This is a very confusing word. We mostly understand what the word Interface means, but “Application Programming”, what even is that. Honestly I'm confused. Is that suppose to be two words like “Application”, “Programming” and then the “Interface” is suppose to mean between the two? Like would a “Computer Human Interface” be an interface between a “Computer” and a “Human” (monitor , keyboard, mouse ) or is a “Computer Human” a real thing - perhaps the terminator. So a CHI is our boy Kyle Reese who is the only way we are able to work with the computer human. I think more likely “Application Programming Interface” was simply poorly named and doesn't really make sense. It was originally called an “Advanced Programming Interface” , but perhaps being a bit to ostentatious merged into the now wildly accepted “Application Programming Interface”. So now, not wanting to change an acronym has confused the living heck out everyone.... Any thoughts or clarification would be great, I'm giving a lecture on this topic in a month, so I would prefer not to BS my way through it.
