  This question already has an answer here: Will having multiple domains improve my seo? 7 answers I'm running a website for a global company, and although we rank first in search engine results here in Ireland, a search done from other countries doesn't rank us as highly. If I register the domain at other top level domain names (eg. example.co.uk, example.nor etc.) and then just mirror the .com site to those other domains, will I be penalised by search engines for having duplicate content? Has anyone else faced a similar problem and found a way to capture the global search engine? Thanks.

• How do I tackle top down RPG movement?

  I have a game that I am writing in Java. It is a top down RPG and I am trying to handle movement in the world. The world is largely procedural and I am having a difficult time tackling how to handle character movement around the world and render the changes to the screen. I have the world loaded in blocks which contains all the tiles. How do I tackle the character movement? I am stumped and can't figure out where I should go with it. EDIT: Well I was abstract with the issue at hand. Right now I can only think of rigidly sticking everything into a 2D array and saving the block ID and the player offset in the Block or I could just "float" everything and move about between tiles so to speak.

  Occasionally, my Conky window jumps to the top and covers all other windows. The only way to solve it is to kill and restart Conky. This happens at seemingly random times while using Compiz features. It seems especially common while using the scale plugin's window picker, but no plugin consistently causes this problem every time. I've seen several questions that appear related on the surface. However, all those questions are solved by ensuring that Conky starts after Compiz. In my case, my problems occur even if Conky starts after Compiz.

• Enemy Spawning method in a Top-Down Shooter

  I'm working on a top-down shooter akin to DoDonPachi, Ikaruga, etc. The camera movement through the world is handled automatically with the player able to move inside of the camera's visible region. Along the way, enemies are scripted to spawn at particular points along the path. While this sounds straightforward, I could see two ways to define these points: Camera's position: 'trigger' spawning as the camera passes by the points Time along path: "30 seconds in, spawn 2 enemies" In both cases, the camera-relative positions would be defined as well as the behavior of the enemy. The way I see it, the way you define these points will directly affect how the 'level editor', or what have you, will work. Would there be any benefits of one approach over the other?

• installing ubuntu 10.04 over top 11.04

  im looking to install 10.04 over top the 11.04 partition, it wouldnt let. keeps giving me a "root file system not found" error ever time i manually select partition. (i have a win7 partition) 11.04 popped up after upgrade that my hardware isnt supported for unity. and i cant boot into it, hangs up on purple screen right after boot menu. if anyone can post a link to a how to guide or put it on here, would be great? im trying to take advantage of my nvidia geforce gt 120m (its a laptop) to play around with cuda/c++ programming!

  When starting the first project in a new language, you have basically two approaches to learning. Either you do a quick Google search, pull together the most popular frameworks and libraries and work your way from their tutorials towards what you want to achieve (top-down). Or you start with the language basics and the standard library and by and by replace your own simple components with more sophisticated third-party components once you know what you're searching for (bottom-up). Now I'm about to embark on my first serious Javascript project. There's probably as much to know about the language as there is about jQuery, ExtJS and whathaveyou, and I'm trying to decide what to focus on.

• Nautilus menubar behind top panel ubuntu 11.10

  The nautilus menubar appears behind the top taskbar, I have tried to uninstall appmenu-gtk3 and restart nautilus as suggested but no joy. There is a duplicate but it is closed with no proper solution, disabling nautilus is not a solution! Thanks all Note: Not resolvable, it is a bug, wait for an official fix! A fresh install corrected the problem. The only work around is to disable Nautilus as your desktop manager. I suggest the easiest way is to use gnome-tweak-tool found in the repos. Thanks all

• Top Down bounds of vision

  Obviously in a first person view point the player sees only what's in front of them (with the exception of radars and rearview mirrors, etc). My game has a top down perspective, but I still want to limit what the character sees based on their facing. I've already worked out having objects obstruct vision, but there are two other factors that I worry would be disorienting and want to do right. I want the player to have reduced peripheral vision and very little view behind them. The assumption is he can turn his head and so see fairly well out to the sides, but hardly at all behind without turning the whole body. How do I make it clear you are not seeing behind you? I want the map to turn so the player is always facing up. Part of the game is to experience kind of a maze and the player should be able to lose track of North. How can I turn the map rather than the player avatar without causing confusion?

• Flikering line on top of display

  I just bought a new Dell Inspiron pre-installed with Ubuntu 11.10. All was fine until I updated the OS. Since then, I have this flickering line at the top of my screen and it won't go after rebooting or changing the screen resolution. It gets really annoying. I don't know which update did this. I tried reinstalling the image from Dell, and it worked fine until I applied the updates. I tried to take a screen shot but it does not show. The line seems to be outside the desktop area. Help please... Thanks!

What are the X (X could be 5 / 10 / ... or even 100 :) most important tips to code and debug efficiently in general (and in particular with java / javascript) ? I'll start with some basic ones : Use functions everytime a portion of code is used more than twice. Try not to code features with more than 15 lines of code in one shot. Rather write 5 lines of code then check if they work correctly then write 5 more... and so on start with the outcome of the function and then code it backwards (bottom-top approach) ... • PHP ZendOptimizer on Red Hat Enterprise Linux

  I would like to install FlashMoto and the requirements are not unreasonable: PHP 5.2.1 or higher, Zend Optimizer 3.3 or higher. However my RHEL 5.4 provides me with PHP 5.1.6. So I tried the remi repository http://rpms.famillecollet.com/ but it gave me PHP 5.3.1 and Zend Optimizer from zend.com does not support anything higher than 5.2.x. I also tried the dag repo but it does not have PHP in any version. I also tried some RPMs that Oracle provides on their homepage but they don't provide php-mbstring that I also need. Does anyone know how to get PHP 5.2.1 installed on a RHEL 5.4? Then I can probably fix install the Zend thing. Thanks in advance.

  My physical PC is running 2 VMs on virtualbox. Both of the VM's are linux 64 bit. Don’t forget to give it a look. I agree with Mike because after I looked into the /etc/hosts files, it has just default localhost stuff in it. How should I reconfigure the hosts file?

• Red Hat 5.3 on HP Proliant DL380 G5 and failed drive on RAID controller

  I have a development ERP server here in my office that I assist with support on, and originally the DBA requested a single drive setup for some of the drives on the server. Thus the hardware RAID controller (an HP embedded controller) looks like: c0d0 (2 drive) RAID-1 c0d1 (2 drive) RAID-1 c0d2 (1 drive) No RAID <-- Failed c0d3 (1 drive) No RAID c0d4 (1 drive) No RAID c0d5 (1 drive) No RAID c0d2 has failed. I replaced the drive immediately with a spare using the hot-swap, but the c0d2 continues to mark itself as failed, even when I umount the partition. I'm loathe to reboot the server since I'm concerned about the server coming back up in rescue mode but I'm afraid that's the only way to get the system to re-read the drive. I assumed there was some sort of auto-detection routine for this, but I haven't been able to figure out the proper procedure. I have installed the HP ACU CLI utilties, so I can see the hardware RAID setup. I'd really like to find out what the proper procedure should have been, where I went wrong, and how to correct it now. Obviously this goes without saying I should NOT have listened to the DBA and set the drives up as RAID-1 throughout as was my first instinct. He wasn't worried about data loss, but it sure would have been easier to replace the failed drive. :)

• How to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux on Apple Macbook Pro MacBookPro4,1

  I have a one year old Mac Book Pro that I am trying to get RHEL 5.4 installed on via bootcamp. No matter what I do I can't get the installer to boot. I have tried multiple DVD's and even verified the install works on a new Mac Book Pro. Most of the time the installer simply locks up. I usually use Linux text with all-generic-ide on the boot line. I removed the ide parameter and I just used linux text. The results I get are that a bunch of kernel messages appear then the background turns blue and a thin text box pops up saying its loading ata..... something it disappears too fast for me to read. Then the machine freezes. I pressed the alt function keys to see if I could look at the system log, here is what it says: Alt-f3 says "trying to mount CD device hda" Alt-f4 says status error: hda: lastFailedSense Hda: Failed opcode was: unknown Hda: Lost interrupt Hda: Drive not ready for command Ide-cd: command 0x3 timed out Above this junk it looks like it found the partition because it knew it was 20 GB and listed as /dev/sda3. I think it has something to do with the CD drive, is that possible? Thanks again for the support.   I am a total noob with linux. So please explain clearly if you have a solution for me. I have an VPS and I want to update JAVA. I found a guide on the Java site which says: rpm -e < package_name I searched for the packages: [root@srv1 ~]# rpm -qa | grep java java_cup-0.10k-5.el6.x86_64 java-1.5.0-gcj-1.5.0.0-29.1.el6.x86_64 Than I tried to do the delete command [root@srv1 ~]# rpm -e java-1.5.0-gcj-1.5.0.0-29.1.el6.x86_64 error: Failed dependencies: java-gcj-compat is needed by (installed) java_cup-1:0.10k-5.el6.x86_64 java-gcj-compat >= 1.0.70 is needed by (installed) sinjdoc-0.5-9.1.el6.x86_64 What should I do now? • Locale setting on a Red Hat box

  Hi all, Recently our organization got a couple of server boxes which are I guess present in some data-center in UK. The problem is that for some reason the default Locale representation in Java on that server returns en_US instead of the expected en_GB (I confirmed this by running a code on that server which simply outputs Locale.default()). I am pretty sure this has got something to do the way in which the boxes were set up. My question is: what would be the approach to fix this issue now that the OS has been installed? Is there any way I can for a given SSH session set the locale as en_GB instead of the current en_US? TIA, sasuke
