• What grid distributed computing frameworks are currently favoured for trading systems

  There seems to a quite a few grid computing frameworks out there, but which ones are actually being used to any great extent by the investment banks for purposes of low latency distributing calculation? I'd be interested to hear answers covering both windows,Linux and cross platform. Also, what RPC mechanisms seem to be favoured most? I've heard that for reason of low latency and speed, the calculations themselves are quite often written in C++/C as calculations running on VMs are several orders of magnitude slower than native code. Does this seem to be a common scenario in practice? e.g distributed .NET grid framework running calculations written in native c++/c?

Is it really necessary to spell out OPTIONS in every defined route that restricts the verbs supported?

• How do i get the default gateway in LINUX given the destination?

  Good day! I'm trying to get the default gateway, using the destination 0.0.0.0 i used this command: netstat -rn | grep 0.0.0.0 and it returns this list: Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface 10.9.9.17 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 tun0 133.88.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 0.0.0.0 133.88.31.70 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0 My goal here is to ping the default gateway using destination 0.0.0.0; thus, that is "133.88.31.70"; but this one returns a list because of using 'grep'. Question is: How do i get the default gateway only? I will need it for my bash script to identify if net connection is up or not. Any answers will be much appreciated. =)

• Learning OpenGL ES 1.x

  What is the quickest way to come up to speed on OpenGL ES 1.x? Let's assume I know nothing about OpenGL (which is not entirely true, but it's been a while since I last used OpenGL). I am most interested in learning this for iPhone-related development, but I'm interested in learning how it works on other platforms as well. I've found the book OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide, but I am concerned that it might not be the best approach because it focuses on 2.0 rather than 1.x. My understanding is that 2.0 is not backwards-compatible with 1.x, so I may miss out on some important concepts.   I'm new to stackoverflow and I'm looking for a question list, like the one on top, which just contains questions about interested tags. For example I'm interested in Java, but I have no clue about Python and questions about python clutters my questions page. I don't have answers concerning any python problem. I think it's too exhausting to enter my interested tags in the search combined with [xxx] OR. Is there a usable way to do this? By the way, what for are interested tags used right now? I added some in my profile but didn't see a benefit.

• How can I see who in my team are writing the most code and who is writing the least using TFS?

  I am having a problem with one of my team members output. He seems to be always 'busy' yet I am unable to see exactly what code he has done and he seems be delivering very little and it seems to take a long time to do so. I'd like to investigate further using TFS and was wondering if there is any functionality in TFS that shows what has been written by an individual or similar? Just to clarify I am NOT spying I am trying to resolve situation. This is only a starting point. I un derstand that quantity of code does not equate to best programmer thanks for any answers

• For simple C cmd programs: how to add "program executed in 12,345 seconds" ?

  I'm a windows user, and I'm learning C. I use Codeblocks and visual c++ 2008 express at home to write simple C command line programs (I'm a beginner) and I find really useful when codeblocks adds a few lines at the end with the time it takes (example: "Process returned 0 (0x0) execution time : 6.848 s"). I want to add this functionality to the .exe so I can 'benchmark' or 'test' the program on a few computers. I tried using time(NULL) but it only works with 1 second precision. I also found very interesting answers here (I'm actually looking for the same thing): http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2173323/calculating-time-by-the-c-code The solution proposed by Mark Wilkins, works fine on visual c++ 2008 express on my windows 64 bit PC, but the .exe does not work anywhere else. Am I doing something wrong? I would like a method to count elapsed wall time for my programs, that must have 32bit compatibility. Thanks in advance!

• Data Warehouse: One Database or many?

  At my new company, they keep all data associated with the data warehouse, including import, staging, audit, dimension and fact tables, together in the same physical database. I've been a database developer for a number of years now and this consolidation of function and form seems counter to everything I know. It seems to make security, backup/restore and performance management issues more manually intensive. Is this something that is done in the industry? Are there substantial reasons for doing or not doing it? The platform is Netezza. The size is in terabytes, hundreds of millions of rows. What I'm looking to get from answers to this question is a solid understanding of how right or wrong this path is. From your experience, what are the issues I should be focused on arguing if this is a path that will cause trouble for us down the road. If it is no big deal, then I'd like to know that as well.

  I've got a classification problem in my hand, which I'd like to address with a machine learning algorithm ( Bayes, or Markovian probably, the question is independent on the classifier to be used). Given a number of training instances, I'm looking for a way to measure the performance of an implemented classificator, with taking data overfitting problem into account. That is: given N[1..100] training samples, if I run the training algorithm on every one of the samples, and use this very same samples to measure fitness, it might stuck into a data overfitting problem -the classifier will know the exact answers for the training instances, without having much predictive power, rendering the fitness results useless. An obvious solution would be seperating the hand-tagged samples into training, and test samples; and I'd like to learn about methods selecting the statistically significant samples for training. • XAMPP - local host problems

  I have picked up some possible answers to my problem here, but none have so far worked. I have installed XAMPP but get the dreaded HTTP 404 error on both IE and Firefox when asking for 'http://localhost/'. I work with Dreamweaver but cannot get the testing server (XAMPP) to work, although I can connect to the linux/apache remote server. Skype has been uninstalled. Therefore XAMPP is running on port 80 by itself. XAMPP says Apache and Mysql have 'started'. Is there someone that could please help me?

• Laravel 4 - Using multiple paginators on one page

  I've been googling for this question but can't find any good answers. I found that there is a method called setPageName() for the paginator but it only works when used like Paginator::setPageName('page'). I looked up the paginator in the Laravel API (http://laravel.com/api/class-Illuminate.Pagination.Environment.html) and the method is a public function just like setBaseUrl which I am currently using like $albums->setBaseUrl('/album/'); for instance I want to have a Photo paginator (?photoPage=n) and a Comment paginator (?commentPage=n). Is there any way that I can use two paginators that use different page names in the URL on one page, or at least call the setPageName() method like setBaseUrl()?

• What can I use the Google App Engine for?

  This question possibly doesn't belong here. We'll see how the answers pan out, if this doesn't belong here please move it to where it belongs. I'm following the getting started guide for Google App Engine, and I'm seeing what it can and can't do. Basically, I'm seeing it's very similar to an MVC pattern. You create your model, then create a View that uses that Model to display information. Not only that, but it uses a controller of some kind in this fashion: application = webapp.WSGIApplication( [('/', MainPage)], debug=True) My question is, why would you use this Google App Engine if it's the same as using a number of other MVC frameworks? Is the only benefit you gain the load balancing being handled by Google automagically? What is a good example of something you would need the App Engine for? I'm trying to learn, so thanks for the discussion.

  I'm writing an application that searchs for Semaphore types in the fields of unknown classes in unknown application (passed by user). I made it using Reflection and it worked. Now I want to fill up these semaphores with values, taking them from a running instance of this unknown application. So i took the class with "main" method of this unknown application, made a newInstance, and passed it when invoking the main method to start the application: Class mainClass = getItSomeWhere(); Object instance = mainClass.newInstance(); Method mainMethod = mainClass.getDeclaredMethod("main", new Class[]{String[].class}); mainMethod.invoke(instance, new Object[]{args}); and it worked fine. Now, how can I get the semaphore values, taking them from the classes of this running application, when I only have an instance of the main class? Many thanks for the answers.

  I feel bad asking this question but I am currently not able to program and test this as I'm writing this on my cell-phone and not on my dev machine :P (Easy rep points if someone answers! XD ) Anyway, I've had experience with using hashvalues from String objects. E.g., if I have StringA and StringB both equal to "foo", they'll both compute out the same hashvalue, because they're set to equal values. Now what if I have a List, with T being a native data type. If I tried to compute the hashvalue of ListA and ListB, assuming that they'd both be the same size and contain the same information, wouldn't they have equal hashvalues as well? Assuming as sample dataset of 'byte' with a length of 5 {5,2,0,1,3}

  I'm looking for simple ways to monitor and limit the number of instances of our application under Terminal Server (2003 and 2008). The purpose of this restriction is to make sure we don't overload our servers. This is an internal administrative requirement - I am not looking for a licensing solution. For a printer object use: PrinterName,Job xxxx. For an XcvMonitor, use: ServerName,XcvMonitor MonitorName. For an XcvPort, use: ServerName,XcvPort PortName. Obviously I'm interested in the bold part. What exactly is XcvPort? I know it seems like a question of lazy person but I really couldn't find info abou this concept.   Hi, I'm building a registration script and I want to insert the user's input (username, mail) ONLY if it's not already in the database. What I usually do in such cases is a request to see if something's already there, something like: "SELECT * FROM things WHERE thing_name = '$treated_user_input'". I have two fields that need to be unique this time though. Is there a way to do only one SELECT request and still be able to tell the user exactly what field went wrong? Every keyword shows up properly with no problems in unicode conversions etc. Now, When I am adding these words to the database column of a table, the words show up as messed up. http domainsoutlook.com/b/site/bhaskar.com.html For example on this front end page if you see there is a keyword that is shown as a blank but still occurs on the website 8 times. (It isnt empty in the database though). I have checked and there is no problem with mysql_real_escape_String...because the output stays the same before and after the word is gone through mysql_real_escape_String. Another problem was that I wanted to fix my urls for arabic language. They should be showing up as /word-{1st letter of the word}/{whole word}.html but its showing as /word-{whole word}/{1st letter of the word}.html I really need answers for these two questions.
