iphone web app: open directions in external maps application

I've seen the answers for opening the Maps app in a native iPhone app, but is there any way to do this in a web app? I've tried changing window.location to http://maps.google.com/maps?q=cupertino for example, to no avail. I've tried using a simple anchor tag linked to http://maps.google.com/maps?q=cupertino, also to no avail. Has anyone gotten this to work before? I'm working on a map-heavy application, and I'd like to provide users with directions at the end. I figured it would be easiest to simply open it up in the Map application. Note: I'm currently testing with just the simulator, could that lead to problems? My iPhone is down for the count at the moment.

Where is the best place to put <script> tags in HTML markup?

When embedding JavaScript in an HTML document, where is the best place to put the <script> tags and included JavaScript? I seem to recall that you are not supposed to place these in the <head> section, but placing at the beginning of the <body> section is bad, too, since the JavaScript will have to be parsed before the page is rendered completely (or something like that). This seems to leave the end of the <body> section as a logical place for <script> tags. So, where is the best place to put the <script> tags? (This question references this question, in which it was suggested that JavaScript function calls should be moved from <a> tags to <script> tags. I'm specifically using JQuery, but more general answers are also appropriate.)

API For Flex Apps To Interact

I have a large flex application (the app) running on one server, and many small flex applications (widgets) running on another server, which are to be included in the app so that visually the user see's one continuous application. Due to proprietary third party software, this structure cannot be changed. I am looking for some way to allow the app and the widgets to communicate, allowing the app to make changes to the widgets and the the widgets to notify the app when events are triggered, so that user interaction is fluid and continuous. There are a few related questions which indicate it's possible to do this by setting up event triggers and listeners. I am wondering if there is any standardized way to do this (the answers aren't very clear) or if anyone has developed a library or API to make this easier.

ExtJS accordion setActiveItem

Hello. I am developing an application using ExtJS. I have an accordion and I need to select an active item(so it expands). Accordion.setActiveItem outputs: "setActiveItem" is not a function in a browser's error window. Second issue is that hideCollapseTool property, when set to true in the initialisation, doesn't do anything. Collapse tools still are being displayed. I am using ExtJS 3.1.1. I would be very thankful for any tips and answers.

Sending variables in URLs in PHP with echo

Hi all, I can't really find good guidelines through google searches of the proper way to escape variables in URLs. Basically I am printing out a bunch of results from a mysql query in a table and I want one of the entries in each row to be a link to that result's page. I think this is easy, that I'm just missing a apostrophe or backslash somewhere, but I can't figure it out. Here's the line that's causing the error: echo "<a href = \"movies.php/?movie_id='$row['movie_id']'\"> Who Owns It? </a> "; and this is the error I'm getting: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE, expecting T_STRING or T_VARIABLE or T_NUM_STRING If you could elaborate in your answers about general guidelines for working with echo and variables in urls, that would be great. Downloading large files with AFNetworking

I'm trying to implement downloading of a large file and show to user current progress, but block in: -[AFURLConnectionOperation setDownloadProgressBlock:] returns incorrect bytesRead and totalBytesRead values (they are smaller than they should be). For example: If I have a 90MB file and when it downloads completely, latest block invocation in setDownloadProgressBlock: gives me totalBytesRead value about 30MB. On other side, if file is 2MB large, latest block invocation gives correct totalBytesRead 2MB value. AFNetworking is updated to the latest version from github. If AFNetworking can't do it correctly, what solution can I use? Edit: I've determined that even if file is not downloaded completely (and this happens every time with relatively big file) AFNetworking calls success block in: -[AFHTTPRequestOperation setCompletionBlockWithSuccess:failure] I asked a similar question here about this situation, but didn't get any answers. I can check in code downloaded and real file sizes, but AFNetworking has no API for continuation of partial download.

As an example, here is a way to get a matrix of all possible outcomes of rolling 4 (fair) dice. z <- as.matrix(expand.grid(c(1:6),c(1:6),c(1:6),c(1:6))) As you may already have understood, I'm trying to work out a question that was closed, though, in my opinion, it's a challenging one. I used counting techniques to solve it (I mean by hand) and I finaly arrived to a number of outcomes, with a sum of subset being 5, equal to 1083 out of 1296. That result is consistent with the answers provided to that question, before it was closed. I was wondering how could that subset of outcomes (say z1, where dim(z1) = [1083,4] ) be generated using R. Do you have any ideas? Thank you.

CSS: How to affect OTHER elements when a div is hovered

I think this is a very basic question but I not sure how/if it can be done. What I want to do is to is a certain div is hovered, affect the properties of another div. For example, in this simple example when you hover over #cube it changes the background-color but what I that when I hover over #container, #cubeis affected. Hi, I'm working as a QA (Software Tester with 3 years of experience) and was thinking of getting some certifications for my career. I already have the ISTQB certification and was thinking of doing SCJP along with MCTS 70-433 certification (SQL Server 2008 Database Development) as the next move. So my question is this: 1) Who should go for the 70-433 certification and is it worth going for, for a career in QA? 2) What would be a good book to study for this? I'm just looking for a simple book that is written just to the point and not much bloated up such as technical bibles. Not that they aren't good but they just take up too much of time. Maybe something similar to the one written by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates for SCJP. It is written in a very simple language and is enough to do SCJP. Edit: I'm still searching for answers to this. get the installed path of a vb.net application

Hi guys... I'm nearly ready to distribute my vb.net application. I have several picturebox files which are loaded currently from c:/temp I need to change this directory to one that will be OK to use when the user installs it to their PC. My question is how can I do this? Is there a way to get the installation path, then use that within the code as a variable? eg: myInstalledPath & "/xxx.jpg" Or... would it be better for me to use mypictures within the mydocuments structure? I'd rather keep all the image files created in a folder which is more hidden from the user (by hidden I mean not cluttering up their own image folders!) I've tried searching for this, but I seem to get varying results with no real answers... (possibly searching for the wrong thing!)

How can I test whether a csv file is currently open and being written to - the file, not a file hand

I've seen a few questions/answers here that deal with this, but none really give me an answer/solution. I've got a Clipper system writing csv files to a Windows directory. I have a perl script running on a Linux server that is reading a mount of that Windows directory and importing the files to a database. Right now we're using flag files to indicate when a csv is no longer being written to; the flag files gets written after the csv is done. I'd really rather just get what I need from the csv itself, but I can't seem to find a way to tell when the file is open and being written to. lsof doesn't seem to answer my need. I've tried using flock and open the file with an exclusive lock, thinking it might throw an error if the file is being modified, but it doesn't. Any thoughts?

The cost of finalize in .Net

(1) I've read a lot of questions about IDisposable where the answers recommend not using Finalize unless you really need to because of the process time involved. What I haven't seen is how much this cost is and how often it's paid. Every millisecond? second? hour, day etc. (2) Also, it seems to me that Finalize is handy when its not always known if an object can be disposed. For instance, the framework font class. A control can't dispose of it because it doesn't know if the font is shared. The font is usually created at design time so the user won't know to dispose it, therefore finalize kicks in to finally get rid of it when there are no references left. Is that a correct impression?

Today I've interviewed a candidate who didn't answer any question. At all. After 3-4 answers (attempts to answer) for me was obvious: we won't hire him. Would you recommend me to say (definitely in polite form) something like: Sorry you don't meet our requirements? Or just to tell in another way: thank you, that are all my questions for now. In theory this must throw IOException("Exception rised.") and the whole method retIntExc() must throws Exception. But nothing happens, the method returns 2. I've not tested his example, but I think that this isn't the expected behavior. EDIT: Thanks for all answers. Some of you have ignored the fact that method is called retIntExc, which means that this is only some test/experimental example, showing problem in throwing/catching mechanics. I didn't need 'fix', I needed explanation why this happens.

I am working both in C# and ActionScript 3. Both language are type-aware, so you can do verifications such as: if (some_object_instance is SomeClassName_ThatIs_SomeType) I'm doing these kind of verifications in a few places. Might be a dumb question, but I will ask it anyway, and I want answers from both camps, C# and ActionScript: What goes on behind the scenes? Is it Reflection? If is, isn't this a long verification which might degrade performance if done in thousands of loops? And by "degrade performance" I mean, is it more intensive than say if (Math.sqrt(8) > Math.sin(10))

How does browser work with expiration headers, cache-control headers, last-modified-header ?

I am a web developer, have worked with PHP and .NET both. having over a year of experience working on web I haven't been able to understand the browser caching features thoroughly, I hope Web Gurus here can help me with it. Questions I have in my mind are : How does browser actually caches stuff, does it request for to see if the cached file has changed on the server or not, What is the Ideal way for a developer to make use of browser chaching to its full, but also to be able to push new changes on the site with no hassle at all. I think if browser somehow chaches my CSS and JS and Images, and then just makes a checks for their modification to the server everytime, this can sort the issue. but I am not sure how to do it, waiting for interesting answers :)

Find the repeated integer in O(n) time and constant space. There is no range for the value of integers or the value of N For example given an array of 6 integers as 23 45 67 87 23 47. The answer is 23 (I hope this covers ambiguous and vague part) I searched on the net but was unable to find any such question in which range of integers was not fixed. Also here is an example that answers a similar question to mine but here he created a hash table with the highest integer value in C++.But the cpp does not allow such to create an array with 2^64 element(on a 64-bit computer).

Help with concept - filters and number of items

Please check http://www.alibaba.com/catalogs/cid/702/Laptops.html they have nice filter here with number of items for each. Note one detail - they have locations here. Same thing on olx.com - location and number of items for each category. Now imagine I have tables: [products] (Id, Name, CategoryId, LocationId) [Categories] (Id,Name) [Location] (Id, Name) My question how can I do the same, cause count things even with caching looks expensive? And they give results pretty fast... Please advice with possible ways to do that in ASP.NET, C#, MVC, MS SQL, but avoice simple answers like "count and change" Thank you in advance.

jQuery UI: How to change the color of a ProgressBar?

What's the best way to handle web.config file versions in ASP.Net?

I have an ASP.Net web site (ASPX and ASMX pages) with a single web.config file. We have a development version and a production version. Over time, the web.config files for development and production have diverged substantially. What is the best practice for keeping both versions of web.config in source control (we use Tortoise SVN but I don't think that matters)? It seems like I could add the production web.config file with a name like "web.config.prod", and then when we turnover all the files we would just add the step of deleting the existing web.config and renaming web.config.prod to web.config. This seems hackish, although I'm sure it would work. Is there not some mechanism for dealing with this built in to Visual Studio? It seems like this would be a common issue, but I haven't found any questions (with answers) about this.

keyboard in UIWebView shows and then hides itself on input focus

I have a page that's loading into a UIWebView (which takes 100% of the screen) on an iPad. When I touch a text field, the page positions the text field to the right place and the keyboard starts to come up, but then it turns around and goes back down and blur is called on the input field. When I try this same page in mobile Safari, the keyboard is able to deploy successfully. I can't figure out what the rules are for the keyboard to show successfully and stay up = and why this is different for uiwebview than safari. All my research on the subject has yielded no answers.
