• How can I log all traffic with its exact length?

  I want to process all packets with their size going through our gateway server (running Debian 4.0). My idea is to use tcpdump, but I have two questions. The command I'm currently thinking of is tcpdump -i iface -n -t -q. Is it guaranteed that tcpdump will process all packets? What happens if the CPU is working to full capacity? The format of the output lines is IP ddd.ddd.ddd.ddd.port > ddd.ddd.ddd.ddd.port: tcp 1260. What exactly is 1260? I have the suspicion that it is the payload in bytes of the packet, which would be exactly what I need, but I'm not sure. It might be the TCP Window Size. Or perhaps there is an even better way of doing this? I thought about a LOG rule in iptables, but tcpdump seems easier and I don't know whether iptables can log the packet lengths.

So I'm thinking of using my laptop's monitor for it. Both machines are running on Fedora linux. Edit: Both machines are connected to the same wireless network. PC needs to log in before it can connect to the network if I'm not mistaken. • NVRAM for journals on Linux?

  I've been thinking about ways of speeding up disk I/O, and one of the bottlenecks I keep coming back to is the journal. There's an obvious benefit to using an SSD for the journal - over and above just write caching unless of course I just disable the journal with the write cache (after all devicemapper doesn't seem to support barriers). In order to get the benefits from using a BB write cache on the controller, then I'd need to disable journalling - but then the OS should try to fsck the system after an outage. Of course if the OS knows what's in the batter-backed memory then it could use it as the journal - but that means it must be exposed as a block device and only be under the control of the operating system. However I've not been able to find a suitable low-cost device (no, write-levelling for Flash is not adequate for a journal, at least one which uses Smartmedia). While there's no end of flash devices, disk/array controllers with BB write caches, so far I've not found anything which just gives me non-volatile memory addressable as a block storage device.

• How to get partition information from non-booting server?

  Need to manually rebuild a mirrored array on a server and am in the process of reinstalling SBS 2003 on it. However, it's a Dell server, and know that there's the Dell FAT32 diagnostics partition, a system partition, and a data partition, but do not know the size of each. Planning on reinstalling SBS 2003, all applications on the server, and then doing a System State restore, but figured that not having the correct partitions will cause some grief: am I right? Almost thinking that the size of the partitions shouldn't matter, but not positive. Question: should I care about the size of the partition? If so, how can I get this partition information from a non-booting drive? We have an Acronis image of the one working disk and the partitions are mounted/viewable in Explorer on a workstation, but I'm not sure where the Logical Disk Manager/Disk Management data is stored and/or if there's a way to retrieve it without having a working Windows installation.

• Connecting two pcs through cable, at the same time as wireless

  I've got 2 pcs setup with WLAN - however when I copy files between the machines it takes forever (obviously, since I run 801.11g). So I thought, why not just connect them directly with a cable (my wireless router is the other end of the house, that's why I don't use cables to that) However how should I configure the LAN connection on each machine, so I can use it for transferring files between them, whilst using my WLAN to access the Internet ? I was thinking about letting one machine be gateway, but then Windows pops up with a lot of warnings (basically it says this won't work when you're using two disjoint networks) And now I'm at a loss as to what to try.

• Transferring websites from x64 to x86 server

  Hi, I run a x64 staging server here along with the following: Solr Java etc. However, I am about to get a linode vps for production and quickly realising that x86 is the way to go for their lowest RAM package (thinking to upgrade later). My staging server is x64 with 12gb ram, so going down to 300mb ram is going to feel devilishly slow ;/ Here are my questions: 1) Will I have problems transferring my scripts, dbs etc from a x64 to x86 server? e.g. solr indexes 2) Is it worth going for the x86 package? I am probably going to upgrade later down the line and x64 might be better for the servers with more RAM? should I stick with x64 instead as there isnt much difference when using with low RAM? The event will follow the Shenkel system first match determined by general draw after that every team has played one match is possible to determine the first ranking second match determined by the rule: 1st vs. 2nd - 3rd vs. 4th - 5th vs. 6th and so on after that every team has played two matches is possible to determine the second ranking and so on until the end (3 to 5 matches normally). • PSAD Firewall/ UDP flood?

  Well I'm actually trying to block a UDP Flood on the Application port because the string "getstatus" is causing my application to make large output due to a small input to the attacker's IP. I installed PSAD firewall to do the job. psad -S shows 3000,000 logged packets at the application port and top ports in Scan but does not block the IP of the attacker however other IP Addresses with small number of connections are dropped. I'm thinking that since output is also being made to the attacker, this is why its not getting blocked because iptables rate-limiting is also exactly doing the same thing and not blocking the IP where outgoing connection is also made. Any guesses why it won't work?

• Using a Custom Domain Name In Place of etsy

  I am thinking about creating an online shop at etsy, the one requirement I have is, I want user to see my domain name (www.myname.com), instead of myname.etsy.com. Given that I don't have access to the etsy server, is there thing I can do on my domain redirect( assuming I am using apache), so that whatever request on www.myname.com will be translated to the etsy side? This is so that whoever comes to my website won't see the word etsy in the url. Another particular thing is that I want my custom domain name to show in the web browser location bar when the redirect completes. Is there anyway to do this with apache?

• DSL vs Cable latency

  currently I have a 10Mbps DSL line and I'm thinking to switch to a cable since they got 100Mbps for a little less than double the price I'm paying for 10Mbps. In other words the cable company is offering 100Mbps for the price of 20Mbps DSL. Since 10Mbps is more than enough for me I am worried about the latency, I saw this that is just a guy experiment, that shows that cable and DSL are the same in practical terms, and this but I couldn't grasp it, not sure if it is helpful. So my question is if there's any practical difference between cable and DSL, mainly in latency terms but I would be also interested in other advantages/disadvantages. This is for my home connection, I work from home but I don't run any server, I most of the time code, skype and eventually game.

• Does the Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet's Pen have an Eraser?

  I'm thinking about getting one of the cheaper Wacom tablets to start doing some "hobby"-ish digital art. Right now I think the Bamboo tablets are the best choice, especially the Pen only one, but after reading reviews it seems like the pen with the Bamboo pen doesn't have an eraser. Can anyone verify this? If it doesn't include a digital eraser I would consider this an enormous downside. Does the Bamboo Pen & Touch have a pen with an eraser? If it does, I would think about it but honestly I don't want the "touch" part considering how terrible it seems to be compared to a normal trackpad. And finally, are there any new Bamboos or something related coming out in the future? I'd like a pen-only tablet (with an eraser) that's cheap and portable and nothing seems to satisfy yet.   I am trying to establish a VPN connection to a server in my office from my laptop at home. I tried some of the steps as mentioned here: Connect to a network Connect to a workplace Use my Internet Connection (VPN) Then type server IP address and then my username & password. After creating a VPN connection, I can see I am connected to it. Now I want to browse files on the server. But I have no clue where I should look for them. I was thinking more of a simple step, like, Windows Run > Type ip address > \\124.345.678.900, then a prompt asking username and password, and finally a window opens to view the files. I tried to google it, but still unable to view files. Please help. Update: I didn't mention that when I try to connect to server via \\124.345.678.900 I get 0x80070043 error message.

• How to use an USB digitizer?

  Hello, i am in China now, and when i saw an USB digitizer (resistive), i bought it, thinking that i could be used as a mouse. When i connect it to my windows 7 rc1 laptop, the system properties says "pen input available" But, nothing happens when i touch the panel... i installed the bundled drivers, in chinese only, and NOT in unicode (so the text is garbled) When i install the driver, i get access to a special key on the tablet, "switch from pen input to mouse", and the driver will move the pointer according to the position on the tablet. (but no click) If i use the "pen mode", the computer will use a special chinese IME that is very awkard, i want to use the microsoft ime, and be able to draw/take notes on the screen There are "generic" drivers? Or just a plain mouse driver that will click when i press on the surface The tablet name is "qiancai"

• Cropping a PDF File's Margin During Printing

  I'm using the free Acrobat Reader to print out some pdf documents having very large top/bottom/left/right margins. I want to remove the margins (which are wasting too much space and making the fonts too small). I used to use Acrobat (the paid version having edit features) to crop the src pdf file manually. But since it is an old version it does not support new pdf format and I don't want to upgrade for such a simple use. Is there any free way to crop/remove unwanted white margins from the printed pdf? I am thinking to print the pdf files to a PDF Printer like the Bullzip PDF Printer and enlarge the output file manually so as to remove any white margin. But there does not seem to be such a feature in Bullzip PDF Printer. Is there any other virtual printer software that can be used for this purpose?

• Hyper-V networking....still not sure which way to go??

  We have our Hyper-V server up and running (Windows 2008 ENT SP2) and started to create some of our VMs. The server has 4 total nics. 2 onboard Broadcom 1gb nic cards and a pci dual port Intel Pro cards 1gb. Right now, I have setup 1 broadcom nic to be the hyper-v host nic, and setup the other broadcom nic for the VMs. We are not using the Intel Nics....should we be thinking about teaming?Link Aggregation?? I just want to achieve the best possible setup for the network, but have read many things for and against teaming the nics?? Thoughts?

It works well, but it requires a different way of thinking (The DJB Way) and some common complaints are: TAI64N based timestamps Doesn't store scripts under /etc/init.d (or (/usr/local)/etc/rc.d) Doesn't always work with scripts like apachectl. Some scripts need to be rewritten. I remember that some similar "supervisor/watchdog" daemons were in the works about two years ago, but some were still a little rough around the edges. If you have switched from Daemontools to something else, what did you choose and did it work well for you? Does RedHat or Ubuntu come with any process supervisor utilities by default?

  There is a non-techsavvy user, who doesn't want to learn, and can only use Windows XP or 7. The problem is, that the computer is shared which she would like to use, and the computer stores sensitive, important data. Since she clicks on everything, it's quite a russian roulette. How could I isolate her account from the rest of the system? Like having a profile on the computer (it runs Windows 7 now) which would have the files and other stuff sandboxed? I was thinking of having a dual boot system, but that could compromise the files too, or the boot sector (talking about Windows). Linux is not a way, hence ... see the first line. Is there such a software that can set up a sandboxed environment?

  I am setting up a Rails app on AWS that: 1) all traffic must ssl encrypted 2) will highly fluctuate in traffic on a weekly basis 3) will by maintained by someone that is a stronger coder than sysadmin, but will be responsible for both I am thinking that SSL termination on an elastic load balancer backed by small ec2 instances running nginx and unicorn A small subset of the requests will take longer than 10s, because of this I am also debating using 'thin' instead of 'unicorn'. My question is this: Is this sane? I am stepping into a quagmire of cost, maintainability, security or performance problems?

I tried a different external monitor and had the same problem, so it must be a problem with the laptop itself. Things I've tried: Going into the Display Settings via the Control Panel (I'm running Vista) and attaching/unattaching/reattaching the external monitor. Turning the computer off, unplugging, plugging it back in, and rebooting Blowing into the VGA out to get rid of any dust Toggling through the Fn+F7 options I'm thinking maybe this is an issue with my video card? If necessary, I'm comfortable opening up my laptop and playing around with things, but I'm not sure what to look for. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• OOM-Killer called every now and then..

  Hello there, i have a dedicated server where i've installed apache2, as well as Rails Passenger. Although i have 2GBs of RAM and most times about 1,5GB is free, there are some random times when i lose ssh and generic connectivity because oom-killer is killing processes. I suppose there is a memory leak but i cannot find out where it comes from. oom-killer kills apache2, mysql, passenger, whatever. Yesterday, i did a "cat syslog | grep -c oom-killer" and got 57 occurences ! It seems that something seriously destroys the memory. Once i reboot, everything comes back to normal. I suspect that it can be related to Passenger, but i'm still trying to figure it out. Can you think of anything else, or do you have anything to suggest that will make the leak identification procedure easier ? (i was even thinking of writing a bash script, to be run with cron for like every 5 minutes).

• Interpreting Munin graphs showing available entropy and MySQL slow queries in sync

  We're experiencing performance issues on our website, and after reviewing our munin graphs, the only metrics we've found in sync are Available entropy and MySQL slow queries, with the latter influenced by our number of logged in users: Based on the wikipedia entropy page, my understanding is that entropy is the amount of randomness (here measured in bytes) that the system can use for various tasks, mainly cryptography and functions that require random input. Since the peaks in available entropy and MySQL slow queries are occurring in sync and at regular interval, that the number of MySQL slow queries is proportional to our number of Drupal users whereas the peaks in available entropy seem to be much more constant and less proportional to these 2 metrics, we're thinking available entropy is the reflect of a root cause which, combined with the traffic to our website, is causing those slow queries (and not the opposite, slow queries influencing the entropy). Accordingly: Q: What underlying problem do you think could cause regular peaks in available entropy that could have an influence on MySQL's ability to process queries?

• Recommendation for PCI SATA addon card?

  I have a couple of dead PCs from my wife's office that have working SATA HDDs. Sorry, I don't know if they're SATA I or II, just that they're SATA. Unfortunately, all my spare hardware at home is pretty old; all I have is IDE support. I was thinking I could get a PCI addon card on the cheap that would support SATA and put together a budget server of sorts to play with and be able to use those drives. So I've got a couple questions: After some searching it looks like I can get an addon card for ~20 bucks, but it looks like they're all SATA I? Would that matter? It looks like going to SATAII bumps the price up to $40-$60 or so. Are there any recommendations on a card to get?

• How to shuffle pieces of large video files?

  Hi Folks, For a party we want to show film-fragments using a projector. We have around 50 full-length movie avis and would like to shuffle them in shorter pieces. So every ca. 2-5 minutes another piece should begin. For example a sequence could be: Movie05-12m00s-14m30s, Movie08-55m50s-57m00s, Movie02-02m42s-06m40s, etc. So, random movies, at random positions within the movie of random lengths. What would be the kind of solution we're looking for? We were thinking 2 scenarios: Before doing this use some kind of tool to cut all avis in smaller pieces and put them on shuffle in a regular media player A sort of "VJ" program that can do this shuffle mixing realtime.
