  I have debated posting this or not. My initial thought was not to post about it. My thought was not to blog about it thinking that I would spare myself the embarrassment if I wasn't awarded. A little paranoid, I know, but these are paranoid times. After more reflection, I realize that there is no embarrassment in not winning. There is great honor in being nominated. Instead of worrying about not winning in the end, I need to enjoy the moment and enjoy being nominated. This is an extreme honor. I would to hear your stories of being nominated? What was the process like? What was your reaction? Hopefully, I will have some good news to share here soon. If not, being nominated truly is an honor.

• Taking a Flying Leap

  Yesterday, I went skydiving with three of my children.  It was thrilling, scary, invigorating and exciting. While there is obvious risk involved, the reward and feeling of success was well worth it. You might already be wondering what skydiving would have to with WebCenter, so let me explain. Implementing a skydiving program and becoming an instructor does not happen overnight.  It does not happen with the purchase of the needed technology. Not one of us would go out, buy a parachute, the harnesses, helmet and all the gear and be able to convince anyone that we are now ready to be a skydiving instructor. The fact is that obtaining the technology is merely a small piece of the overall process and so is the case with managing content in your company. You don't just buy the right software (Oracle WebCenter Content) and go to your boss and declare information management success. There is planning, research and effort that goes into deploying software of any kind and especially when it is as mission-critical to the success of your business as Enterprise Content Management. To become a certified skydiving instructor takes at least 3 years of commitment and often longer. In the United States, candidates must complete over 500 solo jumps of their own over a minimum of 36 months and then must complete additional rigorous training under observation.  When you consider the amount of time and effort involved, it's not unlike getting a college degree and anyone that has trusted their lives to one of these instructors will no doubt appreciate their dedication to the curriculum.  Implementing an ECM system won't take that long, but it certainly requires commitment, analysis and consideration. But guess what?  Humans are involved and that means that mistakes can happen and that rules change.  This struck me while reading an excellent post on darkreading.com by Glenn S. Phillips entitled "Mission Impossible: 4 Reasons Compliance is Impossible".  His over-arching point was that with information management and security, environments change and people are involved meaning the work is never done.  He stated that you can never claim your compliance efforts are complete because of the following reasons. People are involved.  And lets face it, some are more trustworthy than others. Change is Constant. There is always some new technology coming along that is disruptive. Consumer grade cloud file sharing and sync tools come to mind here. Compliance is interpreted, not defined.  Laws and the judges that read them are always on the move. Technology is a tool, not a complete solution. There is no magic pill. The skydiving analogy holds true here as well.  Ultimately, a single person packs your parachute.  For obvious reasons, you prefer that this person be trustworthy but there are no absolute guarantees of a 100% error-free scenario.  Weather and wind conditions are never a constant and the best-laid plans for a great day of skydiving are easily disrupted by forces outside of your control.  Rules and regulations vary by location and may be updated at any time and as I mentioned early on, even the best technology on its own will only get you started. The good news is that, like skydiving, with the right technology, the right planning, the right team and a proper understanding of the rules and regulations that govern your industry, your ECM deployment can be a great success.  Failure to plan for any of the 4 factors that Glenn outlined in his article will certainly put your deployment and maybe even your company at risk, so consider them carefully. As a final aside, for those of you who consider skydiving an incredibly dangerous and risky pastime, consider this comparative statistic.  In 2012, the U.S. Parachute Association recorded 19 fatal skydiving accidents in the U.S. out of roughly 3.1 million jumps.  That’s 0.006 fatalities per 1,000 jumps. By comparison, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that there were 34,080 deaths due to car accidents in 2012.  Based on the percentages, one could argue that it is safer to jump out of a plane than to drive to the airport where the skydiving will take place. While the way you manage, secure, classify, control, retain and dispose of company files may not carry as much risk as driving or skydiving, it certainly carries risk for the organization when not planned and deployed appropriately.  Consider all the factors involved in your organization as you make your content management plans.  For additional areas of consideration, be sure to download our free whitepaper on the topic entitled "The Top 10 Criteria for Choosing an ECM System" which is available for download here.

• Oracle SOA Suite 11g Administrator's Handbook

  SOA Administration Book I have just received a copy of the “Oracle SOA Suite 11g Administrator's Handbook” so as soon as I have read it I will let you know what I think.  In the meantime the first thing that struck me was the author credentials, although I have never met either of them as I remember, I have read Admeds blog postings and they are a great community resource, so immediately I am well disposed towards the book.  Similarly Arun is an employee of my friend and co-author Matt Wright, and I have heard good things about him from Rubicon Red people. A first glance at the table of contents looks encouraging, I particularly like their approach to performance tuning where they give a clear concise explanation of the knobs they are using. More when I have read more.

• NetBeans 6.9 Released

  Great news, the first NetBeans release that has been conducted fully under the stewardship of Oracle has now been released. NetBeans IDE 6.9 introduces the JavaFX Composer, a visual layout tool for building JavaFX GUI applications, similar to the Swing GUI builder for Java SE applications. With the JavaFX Composer, developers can quickly build, visually edit, and debug Rich Internet Applications (RIA) and bind components to various data sources, including Web services. The NetBeans 6.9 release also features OSGi interoperability for NetBeans Platform applications and support for developing OSGi bundles with Maven. With support for OSGi and Swing standards, the NetBeans Platform now supports the standard UI toolkit and the standard module system, providing a unique combination of standards for modular, rich-client development. Additional noteworthy features in this release include support for JavaFX SDK 1.3, PHP Zend framework, and Ruby on Rails 3.0; as well as improvements to the Java Editor, Java Debugger, issue tracking, and more. The project is a big one, even a risk, and you just need a good programmer's community that you could just discuss your idea with them and see what they say and even get some help to make it happen. • High contrast theme Firefox problem

  I am using the high contrast inverse theme in 12.04 as I am visually impaired. This generally works great but causes a problem in Firefox as entered text e.g into a Google search is white. As the text background is also white you cannot see what you are typing. I have read through a good thirty websites with similar issues but thus far nothing works. I have tried all the settings in Firefox like un-checking "Use System Defaults" as well as manually telling Firefox what colours to use and these setting have absolutely no effect on anything.

• One click access to bookmarked files?

  On my Windows machine with just one click I can launch favourite or bookmarked files that I use on a daily basis, which is a great time-saver. Is there any way to do this with 11.10 Unity? Ideally I would like to right-click on an icon in the launcher and have a list of files appear that I could then left-click to launch, but I'd be happy for any simple solution. Please note that I am not referring to recently used files lists - these do not work at all because the bookmarked file will always drop off the bottom of any recently used file list.

  Suppose I have a circle intersecting a rectangle, what is ideally the least cpu intensive way between the two? method A calculate rectangle boundaries loop through all points of the circle and, for each of those, check if inside the rect. method B calculate rectangle boundaries check where the center of the circle is, compared to the rectangle make 9 switch/case statements for the following positions: top, bottom, left, right top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right inside rectangle check only one distance using the circle's radius depending on where the circle happens t be. I know there are other ways that are definitely better than these two, and if could point me a link to them, would be great but, exactly between those two, which one would you consider to be better, regarding both performance and quality/precision? • Who was your mentor? Where can I find mine?

  In many of articles I've read, finding a mentor is often suggested. One to who would guide, teach and more. (I wouldn't know the details, I don't have one, yet.) So, who was your mentor, if any? I have only had indirect mentors: professor at university, manager at work whom I've watched and learnt from the most. And otherwise, Twitter has been a great place to follow the professionals and discover more about the technologies that interest me. But I still wonder how I could find one because I can sense that I might be lacking in my experience. Ideas?

• Music server + Banshee

  I'm currently trying to figure out some kind of set-up for my music collection. The music collection is located on my "main PC" and I'm using Banshee to play/manage the music. Since I'm often at a different location where I use my laptop I have a FTP server running on my main PC, use curlftpfs to mount the music in /home/username/Music and sync the Banshee DB/configuration via Dropbox. The problem at the moment is that Banshee skips songs very often when the connection is a little slower. I've been looking at some servers like Ampache but they are not really an option since they don't let me use Banshee (which means I have no ability to change metadata or rate songs). Syncing the whole collection to my laptop isn't an option either because of its size. It would be great if you had some ideas how to make my current set-up more reliable or maybe know an alternative.

• XNA 4.0 SpriteFont not displaying all Characters

  Am looking for a little help and trying to use SpriteFont in my XNA 4.0 game but the problem is am displaying to string "This is a test" but all that's displayed on the screen is "This is st" so the "a te" are missing from the screen. The space is there for the characters but the letters are not.   I am new to Linux in general and Ubuntu is the only distro I have used (about three months)..... I have installed some applications through WINE ,they work great, but now I want to uninstall them... I have used the WINE uninstall option (application-Wine-uninstall) but they still appeared in the WINE text box as did their icons on the desktop... I uninstalled wine through the software center thinking the application running in wine may be deleted also, however it doesnt appear to be the case..... How can I delete software (using line commands preferably, but GUI instruction would be fine) and if I am using line commands how can I see what name and application is saved under.... thanks

• Manipulating Perlin Noise

  I've been learning about Procedurally Generated Content lately (in particular, Perlin noise). Perlin noise works great for making things like landscapes, height maps, and stuff like that. But now I am trying to generate structures more like mountain ranges (in 2D, as 3D would be way over my head right now) or underground veins of ores. I can't manage to manipulate Perlin Noise to do this. Making a cut off point (i.e. using only the tops of the 'mountains' of a heightmap) wouldn't work, because I would get lumps of mountains/veins. • Virtual Economy Setup - Virtual currencies advice

  I'm trying to figure out how to build my virtual economy. It seems like some games have one currency and some of them have up to 3 and 4 different ones. The game is an action game which is currently single player but I'm planning on adding a tournament mode that allows users to compete against each other. The virtual goods that a user would be able to purchase would be either customization to the character or powerups and utilities that give the character more abilities in the game. The character is able to gain coins during game play. The advice I'm trying to get is whether or not it makes sense to set up more than one currency and more than two currencies? What are the pros and cons? Reference to some resources that indicate research would be great.

• Learn a NoSQL or become a badass with traditional RDMS - Where is/will the work be?

  I'm half way through my MSc and am thinking about my dissertation which I get 3 months to work on full time. Im very comfortable with the traditional Relational Database, the question is should I work on a project where I get a good understanding of something like Cassandra, or should I really push my RDMS knowledge to the limit. Getting great at something like MySQL is a solid safe option, will there really be much work for me with Cassandra in my tool belt? I would love to do either.... Thanks for your opinions and advice.
