  • what are the advantages and disadvantages of putting code for an unfinished project on github

What are the advantages of putting the code on github from the outset, as opposed to waiting until the project is in a working state before publishing. If it matters, this particular project is a C# app/service, and I have only a free github account (so I can't make it private and then pull back the covers later)

  • If your unit test code "smells" does it really matter?

    Usually I just throw my unit tests together using copy and paste and all kind of other bad practices. The unit tests usually end up looking quite ugly, they're full of "code smell," but does this really matter? I always tell myself as long as the "real" code is "good" that's all that matters. Plus, unit testing usually requires various "smelly hacks" like stubbing functions. How concerned should I be over poorly designed ("smelly") unit tests?

    I have a game world where the objects are in a grid based environment with the following restrictions. All of the triangles are 45-90-45 triangles that are unit length. They can only rotate 90°. The squares are of unit length and can not rotate (not that it matters) I have the Square vs Square detection down and it is very very solid and very fast (max vs min on x and y values) Wondering if there are any tricks I can employ since I have these restrictions on the triangles?

  • Setup.exe called from a batch file crashes with error 0x0000006

    We're going to be installing some new software on pretty much all of our computers and I'm trying to setup a GPO to do it. We're running a Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controller and all of our machines are Windows 7. The GPO calls the following script which sits on a network share on our file server. The script it self calls an executable that sits on another network share on another server. The executable will imediatelly crash with an error 0x0000006. The event log just says this: Windows cannot access the file for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program Setup.exe because of this error. Here's the script (which is stored on \\WIN2K8R2-F-01\Remote Applications): @ECHO OFF IF DEFINED ProgramFiles(x86) ( ECHO DEBUG: 64-bit platform SET _path="C:\Program Files (x86)\Canam" ) ELSE ( ECHO DEBUG: 32-bit platform SET _path="C:\Program Files\Canam" ) IF NOT EXIST %_path% ( ECHO DEBUG: Folder does not exist PUSHD \\WIN2K8R2-PSA-01\PSA Data\Client START "" "Setup.exe" "/q" POPD ) ELSE ( ECHO DEBUG: Folder exists ) Running the script manually as administrator also results in the same error. Setting up a shortcut with the same target and parameters works perfectly. Manually calling the executable also works. Not sure if it matters, but the installer is based on dotNETInstaller. I don't know what version though. I'd appreciate any suggestions on fixing this. Thanks in advance! UPDATE I highly doubt this matters, but the network share that the script is hosted in is a shared drive, while the network share the script references for the executable is a shared folder. Also, both shares have Domain Computers listed with full access for the sharing and security tabs. And PUSHD works without wrapping the path in quotes.

  • Cannot destroy ZFS snapshot: dataset already exists

    I have a server (T5220, though I doubt it matters) running Solaris 10 8/07 and I have a ZFS pool, "mysql", on internal disk. Within it I have a filesystem "mysql/data/4.1.12", which I snapshot hourly with a script from cron. I have one snapshot, created as one of those hourly snaps, that will not destroy. I have renamed it out of sequence to be "mysql/data/4.1.12@wibble" so that my script will not try and fail to destroy it, but it was originally within the sequence, though I doubt that matters. It renames successfully. The snapshot can be successfully navigated and read from through the .zfs/snapshots directory. It has no clones based on it. Trying to destroy it does this: (265) root@web-mysql4:/# zfs destroy mysql/data/4.1.12@wibble cannot destroy 'mysql/data/4.1.12@wibble': dataset already exists (266) root@web-mysql4:/# which is apparently nonsensical: of course it already exists, that's the point! Anyone seen anything like this before? Web searches show nothing obviously similar. I can provide patches installed if necessary.

  • Eclipse CDT wont recognize standard library

    I work primarily on my desktop, but I started working on my mac laptop and noticed a problem with eclipse CDT. The standard library was underlined yellow and cout wouldn't work (It wouldn't recognize/find it). I tried restarting the program and that didn't work. I then tried to see if xcode would work, found that the version of xcode was too old, and updated xcode. Eclipse still didn't work, but xcode did. I tried re-installing eclipse to the new version and re-installing cdt. It still wouldn't work. Restarting my computer wont work either. I'm not sure if this helps (or even matters/applies) but when I type g++ --version into terminal, it doesn't work. (I don't know if that matters but some tutorial told me to do that to check if the compiler was working). So, in review, I have: Re-installed eclipse Restarted my computer Re-installed xcode (which I think has all the compilers eclipse uses.) Updated Eclipse Typed g++ --version to test compiler.

I have a nib with a NSTableView with three columns (with the right identifiers set) and a class named ShortcutsTableController. In the nib I have a NSObject with class value ShortcutsTableController. I also connected the NSTableView to my controller as I usually do.   • Core Data Migration - "Can't add source store" error

    Hi, In my iPhone app I'm using Core Data and I've made changes to my data model that cannot be automatically migrated over (i.e. added new relationships). I added the data model version (Design - Data Model - Add Model Version) and applied my new data model changes to the new version 2. I then created a mapping object model and set the Source and Destination models to their correct data models (old and new respectively). When I run the app and call the persistentStoreCoordinator, my app barfs with the following: 2010-02-27 02:40:30.922 XXXX[73578:20b] Unresolved error Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=134110 UserInfo=0xfc2240 "Operation could not be completed. (Cocoa error 134110.)", { NSUnderlyingError = Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=134130 UserInfo=0xfbb3a0 "Operation could not be completed. (Cocoa error 134130.)"; reason = "Can't add source store"; } FWIW (not much i think) I've also made the usual code changes in persistentStoreCoordinator to use the NSMigratePersistentStoresAutomaticallyOption and NSInferMappingModelAutomaticallyOption (for future data model changes that can be automatically migrated). More relevantly, my managedObjectModel is created by calling initWithContentsOfURL where the file/resource type is "momd". I've tried updating both the source and destination model in the mapping model (Design - Mapping Model - Update XXX Model) as well as deleted the mapping model and recreated it. I've cleaned and re-built but all to no avail. I still get the above error message. Any pointers/thoughts on how I can further debug or resolve this problem please? I haven't posted any code snippets because this feels much more like a build environment issue (and my code is very standard - just the usual core data code to handle migrations using a mapping model but I'm happy to show the code if it helps).
