• Accessing shared resource on local computer from users of different physical location

  Sounds like easy task to some but such a difficult task for me to do... The main requirement for this task is to setup something in offices located on different locations, so (1st question) users are able to log on to the domain without VPN when they are in one of the offices. Additionally, (2nd question)how they can log on to the domain server when they are on the road like in a starbuck, what do they have to do to connect to domain after VPN connection are successful. also it's my understanding that, we can't share resource from computers on different network segments, (3rd question)what is the best solution to bridge/combine two network segments(two office in different locations) so computers of different location can see each other. • Control scheduled tasks execution

  We are a small shop. I am mainly a programmer, but due to being the only one that risks to manage our servers, the task has fallen on me (yet I it is still a secondary function so I cannot give it too much time). Over the course of years we have needed to create a decent number of .bat scripts that run as scheduled tasks in our servers (dump DB servers, SVN servers, copy files, etc.). Manually checking that everyone has proceeded ok is a time consuming task. I could get them to send an email on completion, but then I would get swarmed by lots of emails each morning. If I setup them to only e-mail on failure, I might miss the instances where the error causes the task to abort (or even not to start). Are there other alternatives? We are currently using Windows 2003 R2, but we are thinking of adding some Linux server soon, so a cross-platform solution would be best.

• Ensure a process is running on a remote computer

  We have about ten client computers ranging from Windows XP to Windows 7 that have a little program that runs in the tray. This program needs to be running at all times and sometimes it either crashes or a user exits the program. We would like to be able to check every hour or so to see if this program is running. If it is not running, it should be started. I have tried using powershell on one of our servers to get the process from a remote computer and if it doesn't find it, to start it. But, that fails because it cannot start the process as an interactive user. I tried setting up a task in task scheduler, but Windows XP task scheduler is not very good or configurable. We would like this to be as easy to administer as possible. What would be the best way to do this?

• Firefox and internet explorer not reponding, but chrome works fine.

  I have been using multiple browsers successfully for years, but now I seem to have run in to a problem. When I run firefox or IE, they appear to start up, but the mouse pointer just permanently turns into an eggtimer, and I can do nothing else with them. Task manager shows them as "not responding". I then have to use task manager to "end task". I tried re-installing firefox, but that made no difference. Google chrome works fine. Any ideas what could be happening?

• How to monitor RAM usage for Hyper-V VMs ?

  A bit of context first : on Windows 2008 Standard x64 with 8Gb RAM, I have 5 VMs running which should take up 1664Mb RAM (3*256Mb+384Mb+512Mb). There is nothing else running on this server except the basic OS components (this not a Core installation). I know that each VM will use more RAM on the host than what has been configured in Hyper-V. But when I run the task manager, it says 6.7Gb used ! If I sum up the RAM used by each process in the task manager (showing all users processes), I get to something around 1Gb... So : how can I check how much RAM each VM is really using on the host (it does not seem to be available via task manager) ? Note that I am aware of the fact that my problem could be unrelated to VM RAM usage, but I would still very much like to know how to do this.

• vSphere 4 - how can I cancel a file copy in progress?

  VMware vSphere 4 SAN storage with multiple data-stores No vCenter I shut-down a virtual machine and using the data-store browser did a copy/paste to copy the VM to a new datastore with additional space. The file copy performance was very poor, and due to time constraints I decided to cancel the copy task. However the copy task showing in the vsphere client can not be cancelled; the cancel option is disabled. Currently I am not able to start the machine in it's original location as the disk files are locked for the copy. How can I abort the copy? I tried deleting the target directory but this did not abort the copy task.

• Best Method to SFTP or FTPS Files via SSIS

  What is the best method using SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services) to upload a file to either a remote SFTP (secure FTP with SSH2 protocal) or FTPS (FTP over SSL) site? I've used the following methods, but each has short-comings I would like to avoid: COZYROC LIBRARY Method: Install the CozyRoc library on each development and production server and use the SFTP task to upload the files. Pros: Easy to use. It looks, smells, and feels like a normal SSIS task. SSIS also recognizes the password as sensitive information and allows you all the normal options for protecting the sensitive information instead of just storing it in clear text in a non-secure manner. Works well with other SSIS tasks such as ForEach Loop Containers. Errors out when uploads and downloads fail. Works well when you don't know the names of the files on the remote FTP site to download or when you won't know the name of the file to upload until run-time. Cons: Costs money to license in a production environment. Makes you dependent upon the vendor to update their libraries between each version. Although they already have a 2008 version, this caused me a problem during the CTP's of 2008. Requires installing the libraries on each development and production machine. COMMAND LINE SFTP PROGRAM Method: Install a free command-line SFTP application such as Putty and execute it either by running a batch file or operating system process task. Pros: Free, free, and free. You can be sure it is secure if you are using Putty since numerous GUI FTP clients appear to use Putty under the covers. You DEFINATELY know you are using SSH2 and not SSH. Cons: The two command-line utilities I tried (Putty and Cygwin) required storing the SFTP password in a non-secure location. I haven't found a good way to capture failures or errors when uploading files. The process doesn't look and smell like SSIS. Most of the code is encapsulated in text files instead of SSIS itself. Difficult to use if you don't know the exact name of the file you are uploading or downloading. A 3RD PARTY C# or VB.NET LIBRARY Method: Install a SFTP or FTPS library and use a Script Task that references the library to upload the files. (I've never tried this, so I'm going to guess at the pros and cons) Pros: Probably easy to capture errors. Should work well with variables, so it would probably be easy to use even when you don't know the exact name of the file you are uploading or downloading. Cons: It's a script task combined with .NET libraries. If you are using SSIS, then you probably are more comfortable with SSIS tasks then .NET code. Script tasks are also difficult to troubleshoot since they don't have the same debugging tools and features as regular .NET projects. Creates a dependency on 3rd party code that may not work between different versions of SQL Server. To be fair, it is probably MORE likely to work between different versions of SQL Server than a 3rd party SSIS task library. Another huge con -- I haven't found a free C# or VB.NET library that does this as of yet. So if anyone knows of one, then please let me know!

  Hi all, we have a project written in Delphi that we want to convert to C#. Problem is that we have some passwords and settings that are encrypted and written into the registry. When we need a specified password we get it from the registry and decrypt it so we can use it. For the conversion into C# we have to do it the same way so that the application can also be used by users that have the old version and want to upgrade it. Somebody suggested in my previous question to do the following:- create a temporary table and insert here all relevant data that might end up in the final result set run several updates on this table, joining the required tables one at a time instead of all of them at the same time finally perform a query on this temporary table to extract the end result All this was done in a stored procedure, the end result has passed unit tests, and is blazing fast. I have never worked with temporary tables till now. Only if I could get some hints, kind of schematic representations so that I can start with... Is there something faulty with the query? What can be the reason behind 10+ seconds of execution time? How tags work in this system? When a tutor registers, tags are entered and tag relations are created with respect to tutor's details like name, surname etc. When a Tutors create packs, again tags are entered and tag relations are created with respect to pack's details like pack name, description etc. tag relations for tutors stored in tutors_tag_relations and those for packs stored in learning_packs_tag_relations. • Marking multi-level nested forms as "dirty" in Rails

  I have a three-level multi-nested form in Rails. The setup is like this: Projects have many Milestones, and Milestones have many Notes. The goal is to have everything editable within the page with JavaScript, where we can add multiple new Milestones to a Project within the page, and add new Notes to new and existing Milestones. Everything works as expected, except that when I add new notes to an existing Milestone (new Milestones work fine when adding notes to them), the new notes won't save unless I edit any of the fields that actually belong to the Milestone to mark the form "dirty"/edited. Is there a way to flag the Milestone so that the new Notes that have been added will save? The milestone has to be "touched" in order for new notes to save, or else Rails won't pay attention.

• FullCalendar displaying last weeks events below this weeks events

  I am developing an application to manage an On-Call calendar, using FullCalendar to render it. Most events are 1 week long, starting at 8:00 AM Tuesday and ending the following Tuesday at 8:00 AM. Another event, presumably with a different person on-call, will follow that event. During a hallway usability test, someone commented that the month calendar view was difficult to read because the previous weeks event is not at the top of the stack, instead rendering below the event that starts during that week. When being viewed, the eye perceives that it should go down 1 line to view the remaining timeline because the event from last week is there, instead of moving down to the following week. I investigated what I believe to be the problem: function segCmp(a, b) { return (b.msLength - a.msLength) * 100 + (a.event.start - b.event.start); } sorts the events for a row, but uses the length of the event in the calculation. Since the current week's event will have a longer duration, it always get sorted to the top. To test, I changed the start dates to Wednesday so the durations are closer. This cause the events to render how I would expect, with last weeks events at the top and this weeks at the bottom. I thought that if one of the events in the compare doesn't start that week, then it should only be compared based on the start times. I modified the function to be: function segCmp(a, b) { if (a.isStart == false || b.isStart == false) { return (a.event.start - b.event.start); } return (b.msLength - a.msLength) * 100 + (a.event.start - b.event.start); } This solved my problem, and the rendering now looks good - and passes the hallway test. What I don't know is if this would have an impact in other areas. I have taken a look at the other views (month, week, day) and they all seem to be rendering properly as well. I am just not familiar with FullCalendar enough to file a bug or feature request on this, or if this would even be considered a bug. I am wondering if what I modified is correct, or if it is not what a better modification would be to fix this issue. Thanks!   I have an application that logs information to a daily text file every second on a master PC. A Slave PC on the network using the same application would like to copy this text file to its local drive. I can see there is going to be file access issues. These files should be no larger than 30-40MB each. the network will be 100MB ethernet. I can see there is potential for the copying process to take longer than 1 second meaning the logging PC will need to open the file for writing while it is being read. What is the best method for the file writing(logging) and file copying procedures? I know there is the standard Windows CopyFile() procedure, however this has given me file access problems. There is also TFileStream using the fmShareDenyNone flag, but this also very occasionally gives me an access problem too (like 1 per week). What is this the best way of accomplishing this task? • BFS Shortest Path: Edge weight either 1 or 2

  I am trying to implement a shortest path algorithm using BFS. That is I am trying to find the shortest path from a specified vertex to every other vertex. However, its a special case where all edge weights are either 1 or 2. I know it could be done with Dijkstra's algorithm but I must use Breadth First Search. So far I have a working version of BFS that searches first for a vertex connected with an edge of weight 1. If it cannot find it, then returns a vertex connected with an edge of weight 2. After thinking about it, this is not the correct way to find the shortest path. The problem is I cannot think of any reasoning why BFS would work with weights 1 or 2, as opposed to any weight. • Strange behaviour when simply adding strings in Lazarus - FreePascal

  The program has several "encryption" algorithms. This one should blockwise reverse the input. "He|ll|o " becomes "o |ll|He" (block length of 2). I add two strings, in this case appending the result string to the current "block" string and making that the result. When I add the result first and then the block it works fine and gives me back the original string. But when i try to reverse the order it just gives me the the last "block". And as you can see I even used a temp variable to try to work around that.. doesnt change anything though.

• How does java.util.Collections.contains() perform faster than a linear search?

  I've been fooling around with a bunch of different ways of searching collections, collections of collections, etc. Doing lots of stupid little tests to verify my understanding. Here is one which boggles me (source code further below). In short, I am generating N random integers and adding them to a list. The list is NOT sorted. I then use Collections.contains() to look for a value in the list. I intentionally look for a value that I know won't be there, because I want to ensure that the entire list space is probed. I time this search. I then do another linear search manually, iterating through each element of the list and checking if it matches my target. I also time this search. On average, the second search takes 33% longer than the first one. By my logic, the first search must also be linear, because the list is unsorted. The only possibility I could think of (which I immediately discard) is that Java is making a sorted copy of my list just for the search, but (1) I did not authorize that usage of memory space and (2) I would think that would result in MUCH more significant time savings with such a large N. So if both searches are linear, they should both take the same amount of time. Somehow the Collections class has optimized this search, but I can't figure out how. • Silverlight Recruiting Application Part 6 - Adding an Interview Scheduling Module/View

  Between the last post and this one I went ahead and carried the ideas for the Jobs module and view into the Applicants module and view- they're both doing more or less the same thing, except with different objects being at their core.  Made for an easy cut-and-paste operation with a few items being switched from one to another.  Now that we have the ability to add postings and applicants, wouldn't it be nice if we could schedule an interview?  Of course it would! Scheduling Module I think you get the drift from previous posts that these project structures start looking somewhat similar.  The interview scheduling module is no different than the rest- it gets a SchedulingModule.cs file at the root that inherits from IModule, and there is a single SchedulerView.xsml and SchedulerViewModel.cs setup for our V+VM.  We have one unique concern as we enter into this- RadScheduler deals with AppointmentsSource, not ItemsSource, so there are some special considerations to take into account when planning this module. 201.        entityInterview.PostingID = appointmentInterview.PostingID; 202.    } 203.   204.    #endregion 205.} One thing we're doing here which you won't see in any of the other ViewModels is creating a duplicate collection.  I know this is something which will be fixed down the line for using RadScheduler, simplifying this process, but with WCF RIA changing as it does I wanted to ensure functionality would remain consistent as I continued development on this application.  So, I do a little bit of duplication, but for the greater good.  This all takes place starting on line 79, so for every entity that comes back we add it to the collection that is bound to RadScheduler.  Otherwise, the DelegateCommands that you see correspond directly to the events they are named after.  In each case, rather than sending over the full event arguments, I just send in the appointment in question (coming through as the object obj in all cases) so I can add (line 91), edit (line 119), and delete appointments (line 142) like normal.  This just ensures they get updated back to my database.  Also, the one bit of code you won't see is for the Appointment Creating (line 110) event- that is because in the command I've created I simply make the replacement I need to: 1.void element_AppointmentCreating(object sender, AppointmentCreatingEventArgs e) 2.{ 3.    e.NewAppointment = new InterviewAppointment(); 4.    base.ExecuteCommand(); 5.} And the ViewModel is none the wiser, the appointments just work as far as it is concerned since as they are created they become InterviewAppointments.  End result?  I've customized my EditAppointmentDialog as follows: And adding, editing, and deleting appointments works like a charm.  I can even 'edit' by moving appointments around RadScheduler, so as they are dropped into a timeslot they perform their full edit routine and things get updated. 204.    } 205.   206.    #endregion 207.} Nice... right? :) One really important thing to note as well.  See on line 51 where I set the DataContext before the Loaded event?  This is super important, as if you don't have this set before the usercontrol is loaded, the DataContextProxy has no context to use and your EditAppointmentDialog Job/Applicant dropdowns will be blank and empty.  Trust me on this, took a little bit of debugging to figure out that by setting the DataContext post-loaded would only lead to disaster and frustration.  Otherwise, the only other real difference is that instead of sending an ActionHistory item through an event to get added to the database and saved, I do those right in the callback from submitting.  The Result Again, I only have to post one picture because these bad boys used nearly identical code for both the MVVM and the code-behind views, so our end result is... So what have we learned here today?  One, for the most part this MVVM thing is somewhat easy.  Yeah, you sometimes have to write a bunch of extra code, but with the help of a few useful snippits you can turn the process into a pretty streamlined little workflow.  Heck, this story gets even easier as you can see in this blog post by Michael Washington- specifically run a find on 'InvokeCommandAction' and you'll see the section regarding the command on TreeView in Blend 4.  Brilliant!  MVVM never looked so sweet! Otherwise, it is business as usual with RadScheduler for Silverlight whichever path you're choosing for your development.  Between now and the next post, I'll be cleaning up styles a bit (those RadComboBoxes are a little too close to my labels!) and adding some to the RowDetailsViews for Applicants and Jobs, so you can see all the info for an appointment in the dropdown tab view.  Otherwise, we're about ready to call a wrap on this oneDid you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Uploading documents to WSS (Windows Sharepoint Services) using SSIS

  Recently I was tasked to create an SSIS application that will query a database, split the results with certain criteria and create CSV file for every result and upload the file to a Sharepoint Document Library site. I've search the web and compiled the steps I've taken to build the solution. Summary: A) Create a proxy class of WSS Copy.asmx. B) Create a wrapper class for the proxy class and add a mechanism to check if the file is existing and delete method. C) Create an SSIS and call the wrapper class to transfer the files.   A) Creating Proxy Class 1) Go to Visual Studio Command Prompt type wsdl http://[sharepoint site]/_vti_bin/Copy.asmx this will generate the proxy class (Copy.cs) that will be added to the solution. 2) Add Copy.cs to solution and create another constructor for Copy() that will accept additional parameters url, userName, password and domain.   public Copy(string url, string userName, string password, string domain) { this.Url = url; this.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential(userName, password, domain); } 3) Add a namespace.     B) Wrapper Class Create a C# new library that references the Proxy Class.         C) Create SSIS SSIS solution is composed of:   1) Execute SQL Task, returns a single column rows containing the criteria. 2) Foreach Loop Container - loops per result from query (SQL Task) and creates a CSV file on a certain folder. 3) Script Task - calls the wrapper class to upload CSV files located on a certain folder to targer WSS Document Library Note: I've created another overload of CopyFiles that accepts a Directory Info instead of file location that loops thru the contents of the folder.
