• How do you recreate the System Recovery environment in Windows 7?

  I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium RTM (64-bit) and I want to take advantage of the system recovery tools (eg the Command Prompt) without using the Windows 7 DVD. My understanding is that this environment (WinRE) should be installed to your HDD by default as part of the Windows 7 installation. However, when I hit F8 on boot and select "Repair", I get: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem... Status: 0xc000000e Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. The "Info" line seems like the smoking gun. My next step was to boot from the Windows 7 DVD, and choose "Repair". It indicated my Recovery Environment wasn't on the Windows 7 boot menu (perfect) and offered to fix it. I said yes and rebooted, however same issue as above. In addition, when I booted in to Windows 7 and I looked at the boot menu options, the recovery/repair option was not there. Only my Windows installation. Finally, I ran the Disk Management tool (diskmgmt.msc) and took a look at the contents of my "System Reserved" partition (which was set to "Active" as normal). It's unclear to me what the contents should look like, however it is my understanding that the WinRE environment gets installed to this partition. • Cisco Access switch is dropping large amount of end points

  This afternoon, with no changes to the network, a switch suddenly started dropping off lots of connections. These connections would come back up a few minutes later, then another area connected to the switch would drop off. This is an older 4006 chassis switch which could in and of itself be a problem but I'm looking to see what else you all would look for in trying to find a root cause. Switch is connected via ports 1/1 and 1/2 in an etherchannel to a VSS core 1/1/42 and 2/1/42. Both sides are up and working however the CPU on the switch will spike up to 99% and that's when CRC errors start to hit the VSS core on one of those interfaces and end points start dropping off. We tried new transceivers and SFP's on each side of the link, same result. When we tried swapping the fiber patch cables on the access switch the CRC errors did not follow the fiber cables they stayed with port 1/2 on the access switch. So port 1/2 on the supervisor module looks like the culprit. We actually tried to create a new member of the ethernet channel by taking a fiber media converter to cat5 and make that a member of the port-channel but when we plugged it in you couldn't even reach the switch. I'm guessing that's unrelated and a problem with the media converter. As of right now we have left it in a state of only one fiber cable running to one side of the VSS core (1/1 Access Switch -- 2/1/42). I've sent some info into TAC and they are looking into the situation but does anyone else have any commands I could run or some troubleshooting I could look into in the meantime?

• How to test/debug bad network wiring?

  I recently bought a place already wired with Cat 5E (8 ports, leading to a central closet). However attempting to get link, nothing works. On closer examination, it was obvious that the ends in the closet were wired backwards (brown on pin 1, etc). The jacks that I've pulled out of the wall do look to be correctly done. However, testing with a network cable tester shows zero link between any of the jacks and any of the ports in the closet - I had expected to just see a 1/8, 2/7, ... 8/1 mismatch, but instead get nothing at all. The runs are accessible and look neat, though they take some bends that seem quite sharp and are in some cases much longer than they need to be (the person who put this in was a professional electrician but I suspect this was the first time he ran network cabling). My best guess at this point is that he either bought bad cable, or put so much tension on it that he snapped wires. Though it seems surprising/unlikely that I wouldn't get at least one active wire on one of the 8 lines. So, my question: is there anything else I should try or test before I go ripping out everything and running new cable?

• Files deleted. What could have happened?

  I'm having a weird issue today. I was writing and testing out some simple cgi scripts this morning when I realized that I couldn't run them from one of the other computers on the (windows) network. So I had my network admin come in and take a look at what was going on. A few minutes later a co-worker came in and told me that a bunch of files he was working with as well as a bunch of others (all *.c files) on the network drive got deleted. He also noticed some strange apache_dump_500.log.txt files in the same directories where the files got deleted. The apache_dump_500.log.txt files all look like this: REDIRECT_HTTP_ACCEPT=*/*, image/gif, image/x-xbitmap, image/jpeg REDIRECT_HTTP_USER_AGENT=Mozilla/1.1b2 (X11; I; HP-UX A.09.05 9000/712) REDIRECT_PATH=.:/bin:/usr/local/bin:/etc REDIRECT_QUERY_STRING= REDIRECT_REMOTE_ADDR=<my computer's local ip> REDIRECT_REMOTE_HOST= REDIRECT_SERVER_NAME=<my computer's domain url> REDIRECT_SERVER_PORT= REDIRECT_SERVER_SOFTWARE= REDIRECT_URL=/cgi-bin/trojan.py I looked and I don't have any trojan.py in my cgi-bin folder. And all my apache logs are clean. Windows event logger seems to not have any traces of what happened either. My httpd.conf: http://pastebin.com/Yny2Yh8v I think we've got some kind of virus that added this trojan.py file to my cgi-bin, ran the script, and deleted the script and any traces from the logs. Is this a thing that happens? Any ideas whatsoever would be much appreciated!

• how to block spam email using Microsoft Outlook 2011 (Mac)?

  I'm using Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac and I'm getting so much spam I'm not sure how to control it. In the past, I always applied "Block Sender" and "Mark as Junk" to any spam email messages I received. This doesn't seem to be enough nowadays. Then I've started using Tools Rules to create rules based on subject, but the same spammer keeps changing subject lines, so this isn't working. I've been tracking the IP addresses they also seem to be changing with each email. Is there any key information I can use in the email to apply a rule to successfully place these spam emails in the junk folder? I'm using a "Low" level of junk email protection. The next higher level, "high", says it may eliminate valid emails, so I prefer not to use this option. There's maybe one or two spammers sending me emails, but the volume is very high now. I'm getting a variation of the following facebook email spam: Hi, Here's some activity you have missed. No matter how far away you are from friends and family, we can help you stay connected. Other people have asked to be your friend. Accept this invitation to see your previous friend requests Some variations on the subject line they've used include: Account Info Change Account Sender Mail Pending ticket notification Pending ticket status Support Center Support med center Pending Notification Reminder: Pending Notification How do people address this? Can it be done within Outlook or is it better to get a third party commercial software to plug-in or otherwise manage it? If so, why would the third party be better than Outlook's internal tools (e.g. what does it look for in the incoming email that Outlook doesn't look at)?

• Small store infrastructure - where to begin?

  It looks like my older brother is about to change jobs - from lawyer to shooting range proprietor - and since I'm the family 'computer guy' I have the task of coming up with and setting up the in-store equipment. Only problem, I don't know how to start or where to look. I'm a web programmer, not an IT specialist. To that end, I figured I should ask the pros. Users: 3 (myself, my brother, and his business partner) Equipment: 1 Windows (likely 7) desktop for POS software, 1 Windows desktop/laptop for backroom use (bookkeeping, etc.) Other: ?? I'm looking for a reliable and, well, idiot-proof way to handle backups. Neither my brother nor his business partner are tech savvy (A web browser, email, MS Word and Excel are about the extent of their knowledge), so I need something they can handle. On-site would be preferable to off-site, given my brother's hesitance to have sensitive business data be handled by an outside source. I'm also looking for a small on-site server. I estimate that, at most, only 2-3 users will need access. A linux solution would keep costs down, but I'm concerned about Windows <- linux interoperability. Would the store security cameras' storage be handled by the security company, or would we have to stream that data to our own server? I know from my own experience with personal security that the company gives/loans a recording device to the home owner, but I'm not sure about business security. I know this sounds like a shopping list, and it's pretty vague. I wish I could give more detail, but between my own ignorance and things not being 100% nailed down on the business end, I'm a bit stuck. At the very least I'd like a nudge - links on a place to start, what to look for, things I need to think about, etc. - for this endeavor. Thanks.

• How to run Fujitsu P27T-7 LED monitor in its not native resolution and have perfect fonts rendering

  My problem is completely opposite to anything I could find as I need to run my monitor in its NOT native resolution and have perfect font rendering. I recently got myself Ultra HD 2560x1440 27 inch monitor (Fujitsu P27T-7 LED) and I have an issue with this. I would call it personal but I'm afraid it's not as few people already agreed with me. I do programming and the text on UHD is way to small for comfortable usage. I changed the resolution to regular Full HD (1920x1080), it became just right but the text is looking slightly blur now, in comparison to both its natural UHD resolution and/or to my old 23 inch NEC. I am pretty frustrated and not sure what to do and how to make fonts look just as sleek as they should? I can't work in UHD resolution (my vision is 100% perfect), simply if calculated, picture size with Ultra HD (2560x1440) on 27 inch is around 30% smaller than Full HD (1920x1080) on 23 inch. In order to have same font size, if compared with Full HD 23 inch, 27 inch Ultra HD monitor must be around 32 inches in size. If I set my new monitor to regular Full HD 1920x1080, then the fonts' size are just perfect but the quality is not as it's blurry? Could anyone please help me out with an advise of how to solve this problem? Spec: nVidia 560 Ti with DVI-D port on Fedora 20. EDIT 1: Changing fonts doesn't really help as everything else doesn't look the way it should. EDIT 2: The monitor is buzzing on 2560x1440 so badly in case there are lots of lines on the screen, like file listing. If I type ls /usr/bin it makes such nasty irritating sound. When resolution goes to 1920x1080 it's a bit better. Any idea why?

• How can I preview the contents of books sold on Amazon in Internet Explorer 10?

  I run 64-bit Windows 7 and have both Internet Explorer 10 and a newly-downloaded copy of Google Chrome. I downloaded the latter when I found that I could not look (preview) the contents of books sold on Amazon (using it "Look Inside" feature) and wanted to try to get a handle on how extensive the problem was (i.e., whether it occurred on other browsers, too). It turns out that this isn't a problem with Chrome. However, I have grown accustomed over the years to IE and would prefer to resolve this problem instead. I have just examined this posting of mine via Chrome and the contents of the selected page are clearly visible.

• Certificate enrollment request chain not trusted

  I am working on a MSFT lab for Direct Access, and need to create a Web certificate. The instructions ask be to do the following: On EDGE1, click Start, type mmc, and then press ENTER. Click Yes at the User Account Control prompt. Click File, and then click Add/Remove Snap-ins. Click Certificates, click Add, click Computer account, click Next, select Local computer, click Finish, and then click OK. In the console tree of the Certificates snap-in, open Certificates (Local Computer)\Personal\Certificates. Right-click Certificates, point to All Tasks, and then click Request New Certificate. Click Next twice. On the Request Certificates page, click Web Server, and then click More information is required to enroll for this certificate. On the Subject tab of the Certificate Properties dialog box, in Subject name, for Type, select Common Name. In Value, type edge1.contoso.com, and then click Add. Click OK, click Enroll, and then click Finish. In the details pane of the Certificates snap-in, verify that a new certificate with the name edge1.contoso.com was enrolled with Intended Purposes of Server Authentication. Right-click the certificate, and then click Properties. In Friendly Name, type IP-HTTPS Certificate, and then click OK. Close the console window. If you are prompted to save settings, click No. In production, our company has overridden the Web Server template and it doesn't seem to be issuing certificates with the full CA chain. When I look at the issued certificate properties then both tiers of the 2 tier CA hierarchy are missing. How can I fix this? I'm not sure where to look outside the GUI.

• terminal-window viewer for tab-delimited files in *nix?

  I work with a lot of tab-delimited data files, with varying columns of uncertain length. Typically, the way people view these files is to bring them down from the server to their Windows or Mac machine, and then open them up in Excel. This is certainly fully-featured, allowing filtering and other nice options. But sometimes, you just want to look at something quickly on the command line. I wrote a bare-bones utility to display the first<n>lines of a file like so: --- line 1 --- 1:{header-1} 2:{header-2} 3:... --- line 2 --- 1:{data-1} 2:{data-2} 3:... This is, obviously, very lame, but it's enough to pipe through grep, or figure out which header columns to use "cut -f" on. Is there a *nix-based viewer for a terminal session which will display rows and columns of a tab-delimited file and let you move the viewing window over the file, or otherwise look at data? I don't want to write this myself; instead, I'd just make a reformatter which would replace tabs with spaces for padding so I could open the file up in emacs and see aligned columns. But if there's already a tool out there to do something like this, that'd be great! (Or, I could just live with Excel.)

• Performance data collection for short-running, ephemeral servers

  We're building a medical image processing software stack, currently hosted on various AWS resources. As part of this application, we have a handful of long-running servers (database, load balancers, web application, etc.). Collecting performance data on those servers is quite simple - my go-to- recipe of Nagios (for monitoring/notifications) and Munin (for collection of performance data and displaying trends) will work just fine. However - as part of this application, we are constantly starting up and terminating compute instances on EC2. In typical usage, these compute instances start up, configure themselves, receive a job from a message queue, and then get to work processing that job, which takes anywhere from 15 minutes to over 8 hours. After job completion, these instances get terminated, never to be heard from again. What is a decent strategy for collecting performance data on these short-lived instances? I don't necessarily need monitoring on them - if they fail for whatever reason, our application will detect this and handle re-starting the job on another instance or raising the flag so an administrator can take a look at things. However, it still would be useful to collect information like CPU (user, idle, iowait, etc.), memory usage, network traffic, disk read/write data, etc. In our internal database, we track the instance ID of the machine that runs each job, and it would be quite helpful to be able to look up performance data for a specific instance ID for troubleshooting and profiling. Munin doesn't seem like a great candidate, as it requires maintaining a list of munin nodes in a text file - far from ideal for an environment with a high amount of churn, and for the short amount of time each node will be running, I'd rather keep the full-resolution data indefinitely than have RRD water down the data over time. In the end, my guess is that this will require a monitoring engine that: uses a database (MySQL, SQLite, etc.) for configuration and data storage exposes an API for adding/removing hosts and services Are there other things I should be thinking about when evaluating options? Perhaps I'm over-thinking this, though, and just ought to run sar at 1-minute intervals on these short-lived instances and collect the sar db files prior to termination.

• Corrupted NTFS Drive showing multiple unallocated partitions

  My external hdd with a single NTFS partition was accidentaly plugged out (kids!)... and is now corrupted. Iv tried running ntfsfix - with no luck - output below.. When I look at the disk under disk management in Windows 7 it shows up as having 5 partitions 2 of which are unallocated - none have drive letters and it is not possible to set any (that option and most others are greyed out) - so I can't run chkdsk /f Iv tried using Minitool partition wizard which was mentioned as a solution to another similar question here. It showed the whole drive as one partition, but as unallocated, and the option -- "Check File System" was greyout. Is there anything else I could try ? • Is it possible to use rsync over sftp (without an ssh shell) ?

  Rsync over ssh, works great every time. However, trying to rsync to a host which allows only sftp logins, but not ssh logins, provides the following error: rsync -av /source ssh user@remotehost:/target/ protocol version mismatch -- is your shell clean? (see the rsync man page for an explanation) rsync error: protocol incompatibility (code 2) at compat.c(171) [sender=3.0.6] Here's the relevant section from the rsync man page: This message is usually caused by your startup scripts or remote shell facility producing unwanted garbage on the stream that rsync is using for its transport. The way to diagnose this problem is to run your remote shell like this: ssh remotehost /bin/true > out.dat then look at out.dat. If everything is working correctly then out.dat should be a zero length file. If you are getting the above error from rsync then you will probably find that out.dat contains some text or data. Look at the contents and try to work out what is producing it. The most com- mon cause is incorrectly configured shell startup scripts (such as .cshrc or .profile) that contain output statements for non-interactive logins. Trying this on my system produced the following in out.dat: ssh-dummy-shell: Command not allowed. As I thought, the host is not allowing ssh logins. The following link shows that it is possible to accomplish this task using fuse with sshfs - however it is extremely slow, and not fit for production use. • Are there any viable DNS or LDAP alternatives for distributed key/value storage and retrieval?

  I'm working on a software app that needs distributed decentralized name resolution, and isn't bound to TCP/IP. Or more precisely, I need to store a "key" and look up it's value, and the key may be a string, a number, or any other realistic data type. Examples: With a phone number, look up a name. (or with an area code, redirect to the server that handles that exchange) With an IP Address get a DNS name, or a Whois contact (string value) With a string, get an IP, ( like a DNS TXT or SRV record). I'm thinking out of the box here and looking for any software that allows for this. (more info below) Are there any secure, scalable DNS alternatives that have gained notoriety? I could ask on StackOverflow, but think the infrastructure groups would have better insight on this. Edit More info: I'm looking at "Namecoin" the DNS version of Bitcoin, and since that project is faltering, I'm looking at alternative ways to store name-value pairs, with an optional qualifier. I think a name value pair is of global interest is useful, but on a limited scale. Namecoin tried to be too much, and ended up becoming nothing. I'm trying to solve that problem in researching alternatives and applying distributed technologies where applicable. Bitcoin/Namecoin offers a Distributed Hash Table, which has some positive aspects, but not useful for DNS, except for root servers.

• How to disable monitor "sleep" on Ubuntu without access to X?

  I just received a CuBox (basically a tiny ARM based PC). It comes pre-installed with Ubuntu, and I did not (yet) want to fiddle with the OS itself. My aim is to have it automaticall start a browser in fullscrren upon boot. Using chromium with the "--kiosk" flag works perfectly in that regard. But now I have the problem that the screen turns off after a certain time. I managed to turn off the screen saver using: gconftool-2 -s /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_activation_enabled --type=bool false And tried to turn off the power management using: gconftool-2 -s /apps/gnome-power-manager/ac_sleep_display --type=int 0 and gconftool-2 -s /apps/gnome-power-manager/timeout/sleep_display_ac --type=int 0 Neither of the power-management commands worked. Theoretically I could hook up a mouse and keyboard and configure it manually. But I want to learn how to do it over the console. The box will eventually be only reachable via SSH. So I'd like to be able to trouble-shoot it later. I don't quite know where to look for. I searched the gconf tree using gconftool-2 -S for anything related to the terms power, idle and sleep but did not find anything promising. Maybe it's not even gconf related... Any ideas what else I could look for?

• Platform to allow users to suggest and vote for ideas

  I head up a support team for a software product. I am in the process of setting up a blog (Wordpress.org), a forum (PHPBB or maybe Vanilla), a means to view bugs (probably expose Jira), but would also like to allow our customers to suggest enhancement requests. Currently we have this as a 'contact form' via the blog, which feeds into a dedicated inbox, which the product manager reviews and may include some of these ideas into the product. However, I would like to give the clients more power/visibility over this. Have a look at ideas.arcgis.com. There are plenty of other similar sites as well. Users can suggest new ideas Other users can vote these ideas up or down (similar to Stack Exchange sites) Ideas that are voted highly will be given a higher priority over lower ones. We can report back on the # of ideas we implement, and potentially reject ideas with reasoning. Has anyone seen any platforms (ideally free) which would replicate something similar to this? I was half thinking of embedding Vanilla within a wordpress page, but need to look into it more.

• Xubuntu stuck after login

  How can I debug an issue with Xubuntu 12.04 (fresh install) which just waits idle after a login for about 30 seconds? The login screen is delayed correctly. After login, I get my desktop background, but no panels or auto-starting apps. It doesn't seem to be an authentication/pam issue, because I can login without delay at the console while the graphical session is still stuck. There's no disk or cpu activity and no obvious respawning of any process when I look at htop. There's nothing obviously wrong in .xsession-errors. Most interesting errors: openConnection: connect: No such file or directory cannot connect to brltty at :0 WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to: /tmp/keyring-wFn4VR/pkcs11: No such file or directory ... • Installing Visual Studio Express on Windows 8.1

  I've been trying to install the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio Express from their website to toy around with the IDE and C# development in general. I have a relatively fresh and completely vanilla installation of Windows 8.1 Professional x64 for this purpose. I come from a Linux background, where installing software (especially software distributed by the maintainer of the OS) is usually done with package managers. First, I tried to look for Visual Studio in the Windows 8 Store. There was one entry, but it did not have an installation button. Instead, it redirected me to their website. From all the products listed under the "Download" section on their website, I decided Visual Studio 2013 Express for Windows Desktop was the best for me. I selected it and clicked on "Install now". An installer program downloaded, and I'm assuming that the installer downloaded the necessary files as it was running. When it was done, it asked for a reboot, to which I obliged. However, I can't seem to find the IDE installed anywhere? It doesn't show up anywhere in the Start menu interface. I can't find any executables that look like they might be the IDE in its installation folder. Running the installer again and selecting "Repair" does download some files, but after its requested reboot, nothing has changed. The only thing that I can find is an advertisement link to "Try other Visual Studio 2013 Products" in my start menu. • How do you recreate the System Recovery environment in Windows 7?

  I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium RTM (64-bit) and I want to take advantage of the system recovery tools (eg the Command Prompt) without using the Windows 7 DVD. My understanding is that this environment (WinRE) should be installed to your HDD by default as part of the Windows 7 installation. However, when I hit F8 on boot and select "Repair", I get: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem... Status: 0xc000000e Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. The "Info" line seems like the smoking gun. My next step was to boot from the Windows 7 DVD, and choose "Repair". It indicated my Recovery Environment wasn't on the Windows 7 boot menu (perfect) and offered to fix it. I said yes and rebooted, however same issue as above. In addition, when I booted in to Windows 7 and I looked at the boot menu options, the recovery/repair option was not there. Only my Windows installation. Finally, I ran the Disk Management tool (diskmgmt.msc) and took a look at the contents of my "System Reserved" partition (which was set to "Active" as normal). It's unclear to me what the contents should look like, however it is my understanding that the WinRE environment gets installed to this partition. • How do I send e-mails with attachments to a Microsoft WebTV user?

  my friend uses Microsoft WebTV (e-mail address ends with @webtv.net) and I'd like to send him an e-mail with a picture attached to it. We went through a series of attempts one of which ended up a success, all others a failure. He just can't see my e-mail in his mailbox, when it contains an attachment. E-mails without attachments always go through all right. What seemed to help in the first successful case, was that he added my e-mail address to his address book and my e-mail suddenly showed up. Seemed to have been delivered before but hidden. He kept my address in his address book however, it didn't help with the following trials. He did look into his junk folder, nothing there. I made sure the file name contains no spaces. It's a regular jpeg, named something-like-this.jpg I downsized it to have only about 50k, as I've read somewhere that that's a limit. I actually doubt this piece of information, because I think the successful attempt was larger. webtv.net contains zero information. I watched their video demo for the e-mail client, so I at least know how the user interface looks like. I've never laid my hands on the real thing. I'm an advanced user myself (a programmer) but I can't wrap my mind around this. He on the other hand, is a very technically inexperienced user and because he's half way across the globe, I can't come and look over his shoulder. He doesn't have a computer, afaik there's no way I could see what he sees. Any ideas on how to debug this? Thanks for your time, guys. P.S. • Alternative method of viewing a database diagram in SQL Server to see what tables have gone missing?

  I have a database diagram for my database, but when I open it in SQL Server, I almost immediately get a message saying some permissions changed or tables in the diagram were dropped or renamed, and tables in the diagram vanish before I can even scroll over to see what or where they were. Basically, it's saying, "Hey, you know all that time you spent laying out tables in this diagram... half of them are going to vanish when you view it, and I'm not going to tell you which tables vanished or where they were in the diagram. You're just going to see a bunch of random empty spaces where tables used to be ;)" Ridiculous. So I thought that maybe if I look in the dbo.sysdiagrams table, I could look at some plain text definition of the diagram to get a clue about the names of the tables that went missing (because thier names were probably only changed slightly) or their coordinates in the diagram (because their spatial location would give me a clue as to what they were), so that I could re-add them, but I can't, because it's a binary definition. So, is there some other program I could use to view the existing database diagram that's not going to just drop and forget the missing tables without telling me what they were, or is this information lost and at the mercy of some SSMS-proprietary database diagram format and viewer which refuses to cooperate with me.

• Public Folders - Delete Public Folders from 2003 after migrating to 2010 (via Adsiedit) - safe?

  Similar Question: How do I delete a public store in Exchange 2003? We are ready to remove our Exchange 2003 server after having migrated all public folders and mailboxes to 2010. We ran for a week with the exchange 2003 server shutdown and everything seemed to work. When I try to delete the PF database from 2003 it says it contains replicas. Whilst migrating i only had one was sync working (from 2003 to 2010) so i believe that 2003 hasn't received the responses from 2010 saying replica removed. When I look in Public folders on the 2003 box none are listed, when i look in PF Instances they are all listed. I know everything has moved to the 2010 server and I know 2010 is not showing the 2003 server as a replica for any folders. I am looking to use ADSI edit to remove the Public folder database from the 2003 server, but want to ensure i am going to delete the right thing so that they do not get deleted from the 2010 database. Should i delete configuration, Services, Microsoft Exchange, Company Name, Administrative groups, First administrative group, Servers, Server name, Information store, First storage group, public folder store (Server name)? Or something else? I have checked and the only public folder with the old exchange server listed as a replica is SYSTEM CONFIGURATION. Thanks in advance.

• What Logs / Process Stats to monitor on a Ubuntu FTP server?

  I am administering a server with Ubuntu Server which is running pureFTP. So far all is well, but I would like to know what I should be monitoring so that I can spot any potential stability and security issues. I'm not looking for sophisticated software, more an idea of what logs and process statistics are most useful for checking on the health of the system. I'm thinking that I can look at various parameters output from the "ps" command and compare to see if I have things like memory leaks. But I would like to know what experienced admins do. Also, how do I do a disk check so that when I reboot, I don't get a message saying something like "disk not checked for x days, forcing check" which delays the reboot? I assume there is command that I can run as a cron job late at night. How often should it be run? What things should I be looking at to spot intrusion attempts? The only shell access is SSH on a non-standard port through UFW firewall, and I regularly do a grep on auth.log for "Fail" or "Invalid". Is there anything else I should look at? I was logging the firewall (UFW) but I have very few open ports (FTP and SSH on a non standard port) so looking at lists of IP's that have been blocked did not seem useful. Many thanks

• Good Hosting Providers With Zend Framework Support [closed]

  I currently use ixwebhosting for my hosting services. They're cheap and work (most of the time). The databases are horribly slow, the servers are horribly slow, and their support (though usually prompt) is tough to deal with. That being said, they're cheap, I've got like 20 domains hosted in my account, none of them are high volume, and they work JUST good enough- until today. This isn't meant to be a condemnation of ixwh though. Their prices are very low for what they do offer and most things work just fine, most of the time. I need to be able to host web apps written with Zend Framework in a fairly easy fashion. The server performance can't be worse than what I've already had (a pretty low hurdle to clear), and I don't want to spend $30/mo. These are not money making websites- they're projects. My requirements are PHP 5.3, ZF support, MySQL databases, multiple domains- not much. Who should I look at, and who should I look out for?

• Mac always boots with incorrect display gamma (for years now including Lion)

  I think somewhere, something got installed but I have no idea what or how to fix it :( Basically, my old MacBook Pro running 10.5 Leopard had a problem where on boot it would show everything on the screen in a very sort of crunched color space. Everything below 15% white would just be pure black, everything above 85% white would be pure white and all colors look to be a touch more saturated. It's garish. To fix it, I found that I could boot into almost any fullscreen 3D game. When the game launches, the colors would still be off, but when I then quite the game and return the desktop everything is normal again. I've noticed Blizzard games work most reliably for this (World of Warcraft or Starcraft2). This problem has followed me through the years. When I upgraded to an iMac I migrated everything over to it, and the issue now happens on the iMac too. I then got a new MacBook Pro for work and migrated my iMac over to that, and it has the problem too. I had thought that it was an OS bug, but upgrading to 10.6 Snow Leopard didn't fix it and neither did 10.7 Lion. Furthermore I can't find any reference on any forum or help site where anyone else has this problem. If anyone has any idea what processes or settings or apps I should look at to figure out why this is happening I should would appreciate it! It looks sort of irresponsible when I open my laptop in the office to work and then boot up Starcraft 2 full screen...
