• Is there a Novatel Wireless Modem Emulator or something similar?

  Novatel Wireless provides their NovaCore SDK for developers wishing to interface with their line of modems. I'm currently developing an open source managed wrapper for it, but I'm having difficulties with testing. I own a Novatel MiFi and have mobile broadband service through Sprint, but that can only get me so far. The device is already activated, thus I can't test the network activation features of the NovaCore SDK. There are also certain features only available for HSPA modems, which I am not able to get in my area. Is there an emulator capable of emulating a Novatel Wireless modem so that I can test my library without physical hardware and an actual data connection? If not, do you have any other suggestions that might help in this situation? I've contacted Novatel Wireless via email and their developer forum, but have not received a response. Thanks!

• Apache Cassandra overwhelming bandwidth overhead

  while testing Apache Cassandra, I inserted 1000 rows of data. I allow it to propagate to the other machine on LAN. This is a 2 machine cluster. I monitor the network connection between the two machine. The total data I expected to flow between the two servers should be around 25Mb including all column names, column values and timestamps). But the actual data sent and received between them was an whopping 362Mb!! Anybody knows why is there such an overwhelming overhead? Thank you

• Creating Facebook Apps .. going mad

  Hi, iam trying to create my first Application running inside an Facebook Canvas. Iam using Zend Framework (PHP) for this project. But iam not able to understand all the different ways facebook is offering. There is an PHP SDK wich works so far. There is an Javascript SDK and something called FBJS? Does someone knows a good point to start? The Documentation is not actual most times. I have managed it to login, and show my picture and name inside the app, the basic stuff is working.

• ASP.NET FileUpload

  Greetings! I am using the ASP.NET FileUpload control to allow users to upload text files to our web server. Everything works great in terms of saving the file to where we wanted, etc, using the SaveAs() method of the control. But we were caught off guard by one seemingly simple caveat: the original timestamp of the uploaded file was lost such as the date last modified and date create. The date last modified and date created become the actual date and time when the file is saved to the server. My question is: is there anyway to retain the original timestamp by setting some attributes that I am not aware of yet or is it possible to read the metadata of the file to get its original time stamp? Any in-sight and suggestions are greatly appreciated. John

• Open Id XRDS Discovery

  I am working with Open Id, just playing around making a class to interact / auth Open Id's on my site (in PHP). I know there are a few other Libraries (like RPX), but I want to use my own (its good to keep help better understand the protocol and whether its right for me). The question I have relates to the Open Id discovery sequence. Basically I have reached the point where I am looking at using the XRDS doc to get the local identity (openid.identity) from the claimed identity (openid.claimed_id). My question is, do I have to make a cURL request to get the XRDS Location (X-XRDS-location) and then make another cURL request to get the actual XRDS doc?? It seems like with a DUMB request I only make one cURL request and get the Open Id Server, but have to make two to use the XRDS Smart method. Just doesn't seem right, can anyone else give me some info.

• C# Linq Entity Conversion Error on Nonexistent Value?

  While trying to query some data using the Linq Entity Framework I'm receiving the following exception: {"Conversion failed when converting the varchar value '3208,7' to data type int."} The thing that is confusing is that this value does not even exist in the view I am querying from. It does exist in the table the view is based on, however. • Mock Repository vs. Real Repository w/Mocked Data

  I must be doing something fundamentally wrong. I am implmenting my repositories and then testing them with mocked data. All is well. Now I want to test my domain objects so I point them at mock repositories. But I'm finding that I have to re-implement logic from the 'real' repositories into the mocks, or, create 'helper classes' that encapsulate the logic and interact with the repositories (real or mock), and then I have to test those too. So what am I missing - why implement and test mock repositories when I could use the real ones with mocked data? EDIT: To clarify, by 'mocked data' I do not hit the actual database. I have a 'DB mock layer' I can insert under the real repositories that returns known-data.

• How do I get developers to treat test code as "real" code?

  In the last two companies I've been at, there is an overriding mentality among developers that it's okay to write unit tests in a throw-away style. Code that they would never write in the actual product suddenly becomes OK in the unit tests. I'm talking Rampant copying and pasting between tests Code styling rules not followed Hard-coded magic strings across tests No object-oriented thought or design for integration tests, mocks or helper objects (250 line single-function tests!) .. and so on. I'm highly dissatisfied with the quality of the test code. Generally we do not do code reviews on our test assemblies, and we also do not enforce style or code analysis of them on our build server. Is that the only way to overcome this inertia about test quality? I'm looking for ideas to take to our developers, without having to go to higher management saying that we need to use resources for enforcement of test quality (although I will if I have to). Any thoughts or similar experiences?

  I am looking to access the actual value returned from the server.getRowData returns the value after unformat applied to the value. This results in loss of information. For instance, if a double value is rounded to two decimal places and if I want to populate the form for edit with the original value returned from the server with 6 decimals, how can I get the value returned. for eg: Value returned from server : 12.345678 formatter option for column : formatter: 'number', formatoptions: {thousandsSeparator: ",", decimalPlaces: 2} Value displayed in grid : 12.35 How do I retrieve the value 12.345678 returned from the server. getRowData returns 12.35

• Python thread pool similar to the multiprocessing Pool?

  Is there a Pool class for worker threads, similar to the multiprocessing module's Pool class? I like for example the easy way to parallelize a map function def long_running_func(p): c_func_no_gil(p) p = multiprocessing.Pool(4) xs = p.map(long_running_func, range(100)) however I would like to do it without the overhead of creating new processes. I know about the GIL. However, in my usecase, the function will be an IO-bound C function for which the python wrapper will release the GIL before the actual function call. Do I have to write my own threading pool?

  Hi, I'm working on a project and I need some advice. Just some background, Im not a programmer though at times I do some fiddling and I am generally comfortable with more specific terms. Now for the actual issue, I have a folder with 10 small videos (4/7 secs max each) and I would like to display them full screen looping and overlaid. • Visualize the depth buffer

  I'm attempting to visualize the depth buffer for debugging purposes, by drawing it on top of the actual rendering when a key is pressed. It's mostly working, but the resulting image appears to be zoomed in. (It's not just the original image, in an odd grayscale) Why is it not the same size as the color buffer?   I'm having difficulties scraping dynamically generated table in ASPX. Trying to scrape the gas prices from a site like this GasPrices. I can extract all the information in the gas price table (address, time submitted etc.), except for the actual gas price. Is there a way I could scrape the gas prices? i.e. somehow get a text representation of it. I'm not very familiar with ASP/ASPX - but what's being generated now is not showing up in the final HTML. I'm using Python to do the scraping, but that's irrelevant unless there's a specific library... Thanks in advance.

• .NET WPF Application : Loading a resourced .XPS document

  I'm trying to load a .xps document into a DocumentViewer object in my WPF application. Everything works fine, except when I try loading a resourced .xps document. I am able to load the .xps document fine when using an absolute path, but when I try loading a resourced document it throws a "DirectoryNotFoundException" Here's an example of my code that loads the document. using System.Windows.Xps.Packaging; private void Window_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { //Absolute Path works (below) //var xpsDocument = new XpsDocument(@"C:\Users\..\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\MyProject\MyProject\Docs\MyDocument.xps", FileAccess.Read); //Resource Path doesn't work (below) var xpsDocument = new XpsDocument(@"\MyProject;component/Docs/Mydocument.xps", FileAccess.Read); DocumentViewer.Document = xpsDocument.GetFixedDocumentSequence(); } When the DirectoryNotFoundException is thrown, it says "Could not find a part of the path : 'C:\MyProject;component\Docs\MyDocument.xps' It appears that it is trying to grab the .xps document from that path, as if it were an actual path on the computer, and not trying to grab from the .xps that is stored as a resource within the application.

• Distribute EXE without config file (Webservice in WinForm)

  I have created a WinForm app (VB.NET 2008) that references to a webservice which was added via "Add Service Reference". The app works ok. Question is about distribution of the app. It looks like I need to install the app's config file with the EXE, however I don't want that because the config files shows the actual url of the web service which is not whatt I want. So, is it possible to use a webservice in a WinForm app and only have to install the resulting EXE?

  Hello all: I'm an iPhone developer, but new to web development. I've done some basic HTML websites and made one in iWeb as well. I'm trying to branch out to actual mobile development now, so I checked out Dashcode. Anyway, I'm trying to put a Call Button, Mail Button, and Map Button in horizontal alignment.   Hi there! I have an issue with the background image of button which is dependent of button state. I have a button inside customized table view cell and i have set different images for button's different states. Please look into the code below. [btnNow setImage:[UIImage imageNamed:@"now_norm.png"] forState:UIControlStateNormal]; [btnNow setImage:[UIImage imageNamed:@"now_focus.png"] forState:UIControlStateHighlighted]; Whenever i tap on the actual button this works great but if i tap on area outside of button but which is still inside that same cell then this button changes its background image from UIControlStateNormal to UIControlStateHighlighted. If i remove background image from UIControlStateHighlighted state then this issue doesn't exists but i need pressed state of the button. Please help me out. Thanks in advance! Vivek Dandage.

• .htacces file. Can I block access to a directory without blocking access to the files within it?

  I'm building a website, but I'm not entirely sure what to do with the .htaccess file. Say for example I have a folder called pages which holds all my pages, can i deny access to someone if they type in www.website.com/pages so that they can't see the directory? I've tried putting the .htaccess file in the pages folder with the "deny from all" line and although it denies access, it's also denying access to the actual pages. Is there a way to do this without denying access to see the pages on the website, just denying access to the directory? Sorry if this doesn't make much sense, I'm so confused lol. • Debug Mode for CodeIgniter?

  Does CodeIgniter provide a Debug Mode, for example, when accessing an Invalid URL? Ruby on Rails does show debugging Messages when a incorrect URL has been given, and the controller is unable to resolve it using the routes map. How would I enable such debugging messages in CodeIgniter? The profiler ... $this->output->enable_profiler(TRUE); ... only affects single classes, but not all routes. So debugging without an actual debugger mode is a little... difficult. :-)
