  Not really a question but I'm looking for comments/suggestions from anyone who has experiences using one or more of the following: EhCache with RMI EhCache with JGroups EhCache with Terracotta Gigaspaces Data Grid A bit of background: our applications is read only for the most part but there is some user data that is read-write and some that is only written (and can also be reasonably inaccurate). In addition, it would be nice to have tools that enable us to flush and fill the cache at intervals or by admin intervention. Regarding the first option - are there any concerns about the overhead of RMI and performance of Java serialization?

• Automatic people counting + twittering.

  Want to develop a system accurately counting people that go through a normal 1-2m wide door. and twitter whenever people goes in or out and tells how many people remain inside. Now, Twitter part is easy, but people counting is difficult. There is some semi existing counting solution, but they do not quite fit my needs. My idea/algorithm: Should I get some infra-red camera mounting on top of my door and constantly monitoring, and divide the camera image into several grid and calculating they entering and gone? can you give me some suggestion and starting point?

• How to get dataset to populate data into dbgrid in Delphi 6?

  I have created a DBGrid in Delphi 6 and tied it to a DataSource contained in a DataModule. The Dataset for that source in also located in the same module. In the OnShow event for the form, I activate the dataset and set a label equal to the rowcount for the dataset. This shows several hundred rows but nothing shows in the dbgrid. If I activate the dataset in the IDE, the grid populates with the expected data. Does anyone have any idea why this behaviour would change between the IDE and normal runtime? We are also using SDAC connection components. All 3rd party component choices are not mine to change. I can elaborate as necessary for clarification, but I mainly need troubleshooting ideas to start at.

• MSAccess Change Date Value Before Validation

  In a grid I have a date/time field where I would like the user to be able to type in short-hand formats for dates and times. For example, if they type in "435p" and then focus off of the cell they get the message "The value you entered isn't valid for this field.". Instead, I want to trap a pre-validationevent and change it to "4:35pm" for them. What event can I use? I've tried: LostFocus & BeforeUpdate: too late (validation fires before event) Dirty & OnChange: too early (they haven't left the cell yet) Or is there a way to turn off the native validation rule that is checking for date formats?

• WPF TextBox value doesn't change on OnPropertyChanged

  I have a TextBox whose Value is binded to a ViewModel property: <TextBox Name="txtRunAfter" Grid.Column="4" Text="{Binding Mode=TwoWay, Path=RunAfter}" Style="{StaticResource TestStepTextBox}"/> The set and get were working fine until I tried to add some validation when the Value is set: private int _runAfter = 0; public string RunAfter { get { return _runAfter.ToString(); } set { int val = int.Parse(value); if (_runAfter != val) { if (val < _order) _runAfter = val; else { _runAfter = 0; OnPropertyChanged("RunAfter"); } } } } Although the OnPropertyChanged is reached (I have dubugged that), the View is not changed. • What do you name the "other" kind of view-model in an MVVM project?

  With MVVM, I think of a view-model as a class that provides all the data and commands that a view needs to bind to. But what happens when I have a database entity object, say a Customer, and I want to build a class that shapes or flattens the Customer class for use in a data grid. For example, maybe this special Customer object would have a property TotalOrders, which is actually calculated using a join with a collection of Order entities. My question is, what do I call this special Customer class? In other situations, I'd be tempted to call it a CustomerViewModel, but I feel like "overloading" the notion of a view-model like this would be confusing in an MVVM project. What would you suggest?

• Should I use block identifiers ("end;") in my code?

  Code Complete says it is good practice to always use block identifiers, both for clarity and as a defensive measure. Since reading that book, I've been doing that religiously. Sometimes it seems excessive though, as in the case below. Is Steve McConnell right to insist on always using block identifiers? • Representing a Gameworld that is Irregularly shaped

  I am working on a project where the game world is irregularly shaped (Think of the shape of a lake). this shape has a grid with coordinates placed over it. The game world is only on the inside of the shape. (Once again, think Lake) How can I efficiently represent the game world? I know that many worlds are basically square, and work well in a 2 or 3 dimension array. I feel like if I use an array that is square, then I am basically wasting space, and increasing the amount of time that I need to iterate through the array. However, I am not sure how a jagged array would work here either. Example shape of gameworld X XX XX X XX XXX XXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXX XX XX X X Edit: The game world will most likely need each valid location stepped through. So I would a method that makes it easy to do so.

• Dynamically adding a Button to a PlaceHolder in a DataGrid

  I have basically something like this: <asp:datagrid id="DGrid" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="false"> <asp:TemplateColumn HeaderText="Stuff"> <ItemTemplate> <asp:PlaceHolder id="PH" runat="server" /> </ItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateColumn> </asp:datagrid> I need to add a Button to the PlaceHolder depending on the values of the data I am binding. At the moment I am adding the Button after the data is bound in Page_Load. The problem is that the data binding methods are not called in postbacks, so the Button disappears when I click on it. Any suggestions on how to do this? Problem is that I need to know some attributes of the grid item to create the Button, so I cannot create it before the data has been bound.

• MATLAB: Can axes tick labels be accesed as text objects?

  I'm curious is it possible to change text properties of tick labels independently of axes properties. Do they have handles? I'd like to control their position better, alignment, color, fonts, etc. I know I can substitute them with text labels, but it has some drawbacks. Any alternative solutions? Particularly, is it possible to put xticklabels between ticks, that are irregular? plot(1:100) set(gca,'xtick',[30 45 53 70 95]) grid on I need to put xticklabels in the middle between grids.

• WPF: Creating instances of resources?

  I'm brand spanking new to WPF and am trying to play around with projects to better understand what I'm reading. My understanding of a resource is that it is the instance, you can't use it like a factory and create instances of it. For example, a XAML-defined rectangle. You can reference it, but you can't have numerous instances of it all over the surface. In WPF, what would be the way to do that? If I define a Rectangle as a resource with specific properties and wanted to have multiple instances of that within a dynamically-generated grid, how should I be going about it? Or is there a different way I should be trying to do this? Purely academic exercise with no real-world application.

  I'm trying to figure out how to allow a user to enter in a string of tags (keywords separated by spaces) in a textbox to filter a grid of results. Here are the tables: PACKETS *PacketID Name PACKETTAGS *PacketTagID PacketID TagID Tags *TagID Name Here is the basic query without the WHERE parameters: SELECT Packets.Name, Tags.Name AS Tag, PacketTags.PacketTagID FROM Packets INNER JOIN PacketTags ON Packets.PacketID = PacketTags.PacketID INNER JOIN Tags ON PacketTags.TagID = Tags.TagID I need to filter out all the Packets that don't have tags that match any of the words BUT ALSO ONLY include the Packets that have the tags entered in the string of text (spaces separate the tags when entered into the textbox) I'm starting with the basics by figuring this out in t-SQL first but ultimately I need to be able to do this in Linq-to-SQL

• How to create a reusable form using COCOA bindings.

  hi. I want to make a user interface in which the user can edit two objects at the same time. The main window would have a vertical split view and a form on each side of the view. The problem is that the two forms are identical and I don't want to duplicate the view components in the interface builder. I want to create the form one time and add a reference to it in each side of the split view, each one using a different object source. I could use a NSForm, but the form is not a simple grid of outputTexts and inputText. They have a master table, and diverse kinds of inputs types, like combos, in the detail. How do I create the reusable form using the interface builder? Or how can I do it programmatically? Do I have to create a subclass of NSView and add the individual components in the code? • jquery offset incorrect on floating elements

  I have a bunch of images each with the float: left property applied to them. They are constrained withing a 400px width area, forcing them into a grid of 4 X 4. • Real-world examples of populating a GWT CellTable using a clean MVP pattern?

  We are using the GWT-Presenter framework and attempting to use CellTable to put together an updateable grid. It seems as though several of the GWT constructs for CellTable don't lend themselves to easily breaking up the logic into clean view and presenter code. Examples: 1) Within the View's constructor, the CellTable is defined and each column is created by anonymous inner classes that extend the Column class to provide the onValue() method. 2) The FieldUpdater interface must be implemented to provide logic to execute when a user alters data in a cell. This seems like it would best fit in the Presenter's onBind() method, but FieldUpdaters often need access to the Cell or Column which belong in the view. CellTable does not have accessor methods to get hold of the Columns or Cells, so it seems the only way for the Presenter to get them is for me to create a multitude of member variables on the View and accessors on my Display interface. Can anyone provide good examples for dealing with CellTable in GWT-Presenter or a comparable MVP

• How do you open a second WPF window without creating a new one.

  In the program I am trying to build, I have a menu button that opens a second window. The user puts information into the second window, presses the "Done" button, and the information is transfered into the main window. The problem I am having is opening the second window. I have both windows build in xaml files in Visual Studio but I can't find a way to show the second window. Using "Window window = new Window" does not fit my needs because 1) I already have the second window built and 2) I have tried this and I cannot figure out how to add children to the window; there is no window.children nor any grid to put the children into. • aspx page gives viewstate error

  Hi, I have a simple aspx page with one grid view. When deployed on server, and accessed through that machine, it works fine. However, when connected through load balancer, we get this error ( when click on any button). The page however refreshes when pressed F5. Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster. Any idea what is happening here???

• tiled images in swing

  I have task to prepare two windows with swing. One contains grid of squares, with random numbers in them. In second I need to load pieces of tiled image and then show them in the correct order, forming tiled image. I've used swing only few times to draw some 2d polylines, so basically I just theoretically now what to do. Ok, so window number 1: I start with creating Jframe for the window. Then I do for loop and in it create 16 JLabels with random numbers in them ? How to set margins between each tile and the whole window ? Window number 2 : So I start the same, but instead of loading numbers I add images ? Now, how can I load image from file and then set it as background ?

• Auto Re-Running of Tests that fail

  I have a set of Selenium/MbUnit Tests that work fine, but tend to take a while to run (over 4 hours) A problem i am finding is that about 1 in 20 test seems to timeout when running. I have confirmed the Selenium GRID is working and the Selenium RC's are all fine, it just seems to be a qwerk of the system. What is really annoying though is that if i run these tests again they will usually pass. What i want to know is if there is a way for me to auto rerun the tests (probably in the code) if a perticular type of exception is caught... I have attempted to put a few lines of code in the catch statement but i know this is a very hacky way of re running the tests. • WF - Creating a selective list

  I have a stupid question. I have created a workflow Designer host where I publish my own activities. I also have a property grid which only displays the properties decorated with a special attribute. This designer is going to be used by none IT staff. What I want is that on an activity the user can select a property value from a list. I know I just could create an Enum but I would like it to be dynamic. I.e. all events on a specific interface (extracted using reflection). Is this at all possible or am I stuck with enums?

• Sorting issues in flexigrid with "json" data

  I'm currently using flexigrid to display data in a current project, but am running into issues with its ability to properly sort certain columns that contain dates or numbers. The data is being sent from a ColdFusion CFC that selects the appropriate data and then delivers it in the proper "json" format. As the date/time stamps and other fields containing numbers are sent as "strings" they do not sort properly in the data grid. Is this a limitation of Flexigrid or am I sending the data improperly to Flexigrid? I can provide examples of my code if that is helpful.

• How do I Reload Ajax Call Parameters without Reloading the webpage

  I'm working with Extjs 2.2.1 with Alfresco 3.2 enterprise. I would like to update the ticket that handles authentication to the alfresco server on components that have been loaded during login. This ticket expires after a set time and this is why I will need to update the ticket. Options that do not seem viable for me(but please let me know if I'm wrong): Reload the components to reload the call parameters - I can't do this because it resets whatever the user was previously working on (ie. Tree panel gets reloaded, grid filters reset, etc). The actual webpage never reloads as everything uses ajax calls to update things on the page. Create a global variable that stores the ticket and attach it as a call parameter with any ajax calls - Any components that were loaded during login will still use the original ticket to make calls to the server.
